http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-raffle-laws-illinois-morris-vfw-met-20170823-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The woman who complained to state authorities about the raffle, anti-gambling activist Kathy Gilroy of Villa Park, said that existing tickets were sold illegally, and should be refunded. Gilroy said she didn’t object to nonprofit raffles when they held the only games in the area and were subject to limits on betting and frequency. But Illinois lawmakers have expanded gambling statewide for decades. They first allowed horse racing, then the lottery in 1974, followed by 10 casinos in 1990, and authorized video gaming in bars, restaurants and other locations 2009. As gambling has burgeoned, Gilroy has crusaded against it, believing it reflects an erosion of values. She speaks at local and state hearings and helped shut down numerous raffles. In 2005, she forced a foundation named for former Chicago Bears great Richard Dent to comply with the law to raffle off a $200,000 Bentley. Gilroy has claimed some victories, as some local governments have banned video gambling. Along the way, she’s been called every name in the book for interfering with good causes, but says the end doesn’t justify the means. Without the laws being enforced, she said, bettors have no way of knowing if their money is being stolen or misused. “I want the law to be followed, so everybody’s protected,” Gilroy said. “Doesn’t the law matter anymore?”)

http://www.centralillinoisproud.com/news/national/trump-berates-sick-news-media-in-fresh-tirade/796343102
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Think President Trump couldn’t ratchet up his attacks on the news media any more than he already has? Think again. At a rally in Phoenix on Tuesday, the President called journalists “liars” and “sick people” who are fomenting “division” in the country and “trying to take away our history and our heritage.” And he repeatedly portrayed the news media as an enemy of the American people, recalling his claims to that effect from February. “I really think they don’t like our country. I really believe that,” Trump said. Afterward, several prominent members of the media said the President’s anti-press rhetoric was downright dangerous, because it could lead individuals to try to harm journalists. While the President complaints about “fake news” on an almost daily basis, Tuesday seemed especially severe.)

CAPITOL FAX
— They’re back!
https://capitolfax.com/2017/07/19/theyre-back/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The last press release I received from the Illinois Republican Party on state issues was July 7th, the Friday before the Monday Rauner purge began… On Monday, the Chicago Machine tipped its hand on SB1. After months claiming that SB1 was about fixing the school funding formula, Chicago Public Schools started making the unsubstantiated argument that an amendatory veto of the bill to remove the Chicago bailout would change the “fundamental purpose” of the legislation. It’s a clear admission by the Chicago Machine that the “fundamental purpose” of SB1 is a Chicago pension bailout, and not school funding reform. It’s time Madigan Democrats in the General Assembly either send SB1 to Governor Rauner for an amendatory veto to remove the Chicago bailout, or pass true bipartisan school funding reform that excludes a multi-hundred million dollar bailout of Chicago at the expense of schools across the state. Otherwise, this is just another case of Mike Madigan and his machine holding Illinois hostage for his Chicago agenda.)

— July Fourth poll: 95% of Trump voters say they are patriotic – Jennifer Harper
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2017/jul/3/inside-the-beltway-yes-presidential-critics-still-/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Despite the din of partisan discord — much of it induced by the news media — Americans still say they’re patriotic on this Independence Day. Star-spangled sentiment lingers: 79 percent of the public would describe themselves as patriotic; 92 percent of Republicans and 80 percent of Democrats agree, along with 95 percent of those who voted for President Trump, and 78 percent of those who voted for Hillary Clinton. So says a wide-ranging Economist/YouGov poll conducted during the last week of June. The Republican Party has a little edge here. The poll found that while 46 percent of Americans overall say that both major political parties are “patriotic,” 33 percent cited the GOP and 21 percent the Democratic Party. But what constitutes patriotism? Sixty-nine percent of Americans overall said that someone could criticize Mr. Trump and still be considered patriotic; 61 percent of Republicans and 73 percent of Democrats agree with that. Another 68 percent also said that one could criticize former President Barack Obama and still be considered a patriot as well; 75 percent of Republicans and 65 percent of Democrats agree. The public is not so cordial toward people who burn the American flag or refuse to pay their taxes, however. Those acts are among those that garnered much less support as demonstrations of patriotism; just 21 percent would call a flag-burner patriotic. See the Poll du Jour at column’s end for more numbers.)

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— OUTSTANDING! At the DuPage County Finance Committee meeting Tuesday morning, June 13, 2017, no motion was made to recommend lifting the county’s ban on video gambling in unincorporated areas. During the public comment period, those who spoke in favor of keeping the ban included Bill Bryan, Kathy Gilroy, Heidi Holan, Luke Holan, and me. During county employee Chad Shaffer’s presentation concerning video gambling, county board members asked many questions and expressed their views concerning the issue. Many thanks to those county board members who would have voted against recommending lifting the ban if a motion had been made. Attendees at the meeting included Paula McGowen and John Zaruba. – Dave Diersen

(FROM THE ARTICLE: But after listening to people on both sides of the debate, board members ended their finance committee meeting without making a recommendation to the full county board. In fact, none of the 18 board members attending the meeting supported a motion to consider repealing the ordinance. “So there’s no interest in even discussing the issue,” said county board member Paul Fichtner, who serves as chairman of the board’s finance committee. “The issue is dead and nobody, obviously, is in favor of it.” . . . A few board members said there were questions that weren’t answered during Tuesday’s review, but no one expressed a desire to bring the issue back in two weeks. “It couldn’t even get a motion,” board member Tim Elliott said. “So I think that in fairness to board members that have questions, (staff) can get back, write a memo and do whatever. “But as far as I’m concerned, this is dead,” he said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: I think that Rauner is simply a very accomplished political opportunist who claims he’s for “the people” while employing all sorts of tactics to win the media cycle, including tactics used by racists and those who would divide this state for their own personal political gains. But it does need to stop. No political gain justifies this crud.)

MONEY MAGAZINE
— These Charts Show Just How Small the U.S. Middle Class Is, Compared to Europe’s – Annie Nova
http://time.com/money/4812741/income-inequality-middle-class-us-europe/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: There’s one interesting wrinkle to the Pew data: While the U.S. middle-income segment is smaller than in European countries, it takes a higher income overall to make it into that group. The median income for a middle-class household in Italy is $35,608. It’s $44,000 in France and $46,000 in Denmark. But in the United States it’s $60,084.)
