(FROM THE ARTICLE: Julie Swetnick, one of the women who has publicly accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct, has an extensive history of involvement in legal disputes, including a lawsuit in which an ex-employer accused her of falsifying her college and work history on her job application. Legal documents from Maryland, Oregon and Florida provide a partial picture of a woman who stepped into the media glare amid the battle over Kavanaugh’s nomination for the nation’s highest court. Court records reviewed by The Associated Press show Swetnick has been involved in at least six legal cases over the past 25 years. Along with the lawsuit filed by a former employer in November 2000, the cases include a personal injury suit she filed in 1994 against the Washington, D.C., regional transit authority. Her lawyer, Michael Avenatti, told the AP that court cases involving her have no bearing on the credibility of her claims about Kavanaugh. Avenatti said the suit from her ex-employer – it was dismissed a month after it was filed – was “completely bogus, which is why it was dismissed almost immediately.” He told AP that he “fully vetted” Swetnick before helping her take her claims against Kavanaugh public. . .Some details of the legal disputes she’s been involved in aren’t known, because documents in the cases are incomplete or no longer available. Records in the lawsuit filed in late 2000 by her ex-employer, Oregon-based software company Webtrends, don’t indicate why it was dismissed. Avenatti said there was a settlement in the case but no money changed hands. In its civil complaint in a state court in Oregon, the company said Swetnick, a software engineer, was an employee for a few weeks before its human resources department received a report that she had engaged in “unwelcome sexual innuendo and inappropriate conduct” toward two male co-workers at a business lunch. The lawsuit said that Swetnick in turn accused Webtrends of subjecting her to “physically and emotionally threatening and hostile conditions” and that she claimed that she’d been sexually harassed by four co-workers. The co-workers denied the allegations, the suit said. Company officials later determined, the suit said, that Swetnick had provided false information on her employment application. The suit alleged that she had misrepresented the length of time she worked at a previous employer and falsely claimed that she’d earned an undergraduate degree in biology and chemistry from Johns Hopkins University. Her lawyer, Avenatti, said that “whether she has a college degree or not does not matter as to whether she is a sexual assault victim.” Helene Moglen, Swetnick’s aunt, told AP this week that her niece went off to college but quickly moved back home. In an interview with The Washington Post, Swetnick’s father was quoted as saying that “she bootstrapped herself and became a computer expert. She’s a sharp woman.” None of the executives named in the lawsuit still works at Webtrends. Calls and emails to the company’s Portland headquarters seeking comment received no response. The lawyer who represented the company in the lawsuit also did not return messages seeking comment on Thursday and Friday. Swetnick was on the other side of a civil case in 1994, as a plaintiff, when she filed a personal injury lawsuit in Maryland against the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. She claimed she lost more than $420,000 in earnings after she hurt her nose in a fall on a train in 1992.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Traditionally, Congress has turned to committee staff and legislative support agencies for expertise. But much has changed on Capitol Hill over the last 40 years. The number of committee staff in the House has declined from 2,000 to 1,100, and from 1,400 to 950 in the Senate since 1979. Congressional support agencies suffered similar cuts. Government Accountability Office staff dropped from 5,300 to 3,000; Congressional Research Service staff was reduced by 28 percent; the Office of Technology Assessment was completely abolished. As Congress’ internal expertise has declined, the number of think tanks has more than doubled since 1980. Many do great work but, as New York Times and National Public Radio investigations have found, think tanks may be beholden to foreign, corporate or wealthy private donors that may affect their independence and objectivity. Likewise, as the number of congressional staff has decreased, the number of lobbyists has, unsurprisingly, increased. Trump only received 42% of the vote here in 2016, losing the district by seven points to Clinton. That was a swing from 2012, when Romney carried the district 53% to 45%. A recent NYT/Siena poll found 57% of voters in the district disapprove of the job Trump is doing as president. That survey also found Roskam and his Democratic challenger, Sean Casten, locked in a close race at 45% to 44%. Casten, a scientist and clean energy businessman, has drawn scrutiny for some controversial statements, including comparing the President to Osama bin Laden. He later said he regretted his comments. Casten has also sought to put Roskam on defense for not being a check on the President and for supporting Trump’s agenda, especially the GOP tax plan, which the Democrat says could hurt taxpayers in the district because of the cap on state and local deductions.)

(ANTI-TRUMPS SAY: Illinois’s Sixth District The suburbs of Chicago were a base of the Republican Party before Mr. Trump. One need only visit a shopping mall in Burr Ridge or a youth baseball game in Barrington Hills to see throngs of the white, highly educated voters who are the electoral backbone of the area, and once voted solidly for presidential candidates like Mitt Romney. But if these voters have leaned right in the past, drawn to promises of lower taxes and smaller government, Mr. Trump has pitched many of them back in the other direction. In Illinois’s Sixth Congressional District, the president’s combustible persona and administration have put Republican candidates in dire peril. Jane Melvin, 55, said she has typically voted Republican in the past and still yearned for a version of the party that has been fading away. “If John Kasich was running in my district, I would vote for him,” said Ms. Melvin, referring to the right-of-center Ohio governor who routinely chides Mr. Trump. Ms. Melvin said she had long supported her congressman, Peter Roskam, but was reconsidering this year because Republicans had failed to check the president. “It’s a character question and a silence question,” she said. “Because they won’t stand up to Trump and say this is wrong.” Mr. Roskam, a former member of the House Republican leadership team, represents one of 21 seats where college-educated white suburbanites could upend the Republican majority in the House. Most of these seats, in relatively homogenous communities around cities like Minneapolis and Philadelphia, are seen as electoral toss-ups. In 2016, Mr. Roskam easily secured re-election by nearly 20 percentage points, but Mrs. Clinton carried the area in the presidential race by about seven points. A Times/Siena College poll found Mr. Roskam effectively tied with his Democratic challenger, Sean Casten, a clean-energy businessman. Mr. Casten has closed in on Mr. Roskam with help from voters like Karrie Sullivan, a former Roskam supporter who said she now favors divided government — both in Washington, where Republicans are in charge, and in Illinois, where Democrats may take full control of government in November. “It seems like the best situation is when neither party has complete control,” Ms. Sullivan said. Mr. Roskam, like other Republican candidates in similar wealthy suburbs, has tried to make the Republican tax overhaul an asset to his campaign. But many suburban voters have bristled at changes to federal deductions for state and local taxes. Highlighting the gulf between the Republican white-collar base and Mr. Trump’s hard-line following, candidates like Mr. Roskam have broken with Mr. Trump on critical issues like tariffs.
