July 4 Evening Edition

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Republicans who participated in Wheaton’s outstanding Independence Day Parade this morning were: DuPage State’s Attorney Bob Berlin; DuPage County District 4 officials Grant Eckhoff, Tim Elliott, Amy Grant, and Tim Whelan; James Mendrick for DuPage Sheriff; Frank Bibbianno for DuPage Sheriff; Karen Wilson for DuPage Judge; and the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC).  Republicans who walked with entries included Ron Almiron, Lori Carlson, Joseph Caruso, Flo Dangelo, Sal Falbo, Chris Heidorn, Pat Hinchey, Marty Keller, Larry LaVanway, Antonio Lollino, Paula McGowen, Ron Menna, David Norck, Thommen Poozhikunnel, Mary Rash, Pat Ryan, and Janet Shaw. Gary Muehlfelt drove the truck that pulled the outstanding MTRCC float. Peter Breen, Mike Connelly, and Jeanne Ives could not participate in the parade because of the Democrats.  Peter Roskam participated in a different parade. This year, for the 12th year in a row, “DuPage Republicans” helped sponsor the parade and fireworks. “DuPage Republicans” was one of the two $2,500 “Star” sponsors and again sponsored the Wheaton high school bands and the Tunes of Glory Pipes and Drums parade entries.  Because of a last minute shortage of banner carriers, I had the honor of helping carry the “Sponsored by DuPage Republicans” banner ahead of the Tunes of Glory Pipes and Drums. Outstandingly, again this year Tim Whelan coordinated Republican use of the “DuPage Republicans” booth at the fireworks. This year again, I delivered flyers to the residences and businesses on the parade route. The flyers listed the Republican entries in the parade and the Republicans who helped sponsor entries. Outstandingly, the flyers were printed courtesy of Alpha Graphics. This year, outstandingly, Roger Claar is a $500 contributor, Chris Nybo is a $250 contributor, Phil Suess is a $150 contributor, and Bob Berlin, Peter Breen, Mike Connelly, Grant Eckhoff, Tim Elliott, Amy Grant, Gwen Henry, Paul Hinds, Jeanne Ives, Marty Keller, Deanne Mazzochi, Paula McGowen, James Mendrick, Peter Roskam, Darlene Ruscitti, and Tim Whelan are $100 contributors. Please thank them for helping sponsor the parade and fireworks. This year was the 10th anniversary of an elephant walking behind Roskam in the parade.  For that 2007 parade, I had the honor of raising $2,000 on short notice from DuPage Republicans to sponsor that elephant. – Dave Diersen

WASHINGTON TIMES
— July Fourth poll: 95% of Trump voters say they are patriotic – Jennifer Harper
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2017/jul/3/inside-the-beltway-yes-presidential-critics-still-/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Despite the din of partisan discord — much of it induced by the news media — Americans still say they’re patriotic on this Independence Day. Star-spangled sentiment lingers: 79 percent of the public would describe themselves as patriotic; 92 percent of Republicans and 80 percent of Democrats agree, along with 95 percent of those who voted for President Trump, and 78 percent of those who voted for Hillary Clinton. So says a wide-ranging Economist/YouGov poll conducted during the last week of June. The Republican Party has a little edge here. The poll found that while 46 percent of Americans overall say that both major political parties are “patriotic,” 33 percent cited the GOP and 21 percent the Democratic Party. But what constitutes patriotism? Sixty-nine percent of Americans overall said that someone could criticize Mr. Trump and still be considered patriotic; 61 percent of Republicans and 73 percent of Democrats agree with that. Another 68 percent also said that one could criticize former President Barack Obama and still be considered a patriot as well; 75 percent of Republicans and 65 percent of Democrats agree. The public is not so cordial toward people who burn the American flag or refuse to pay their taxes, however. Those acts are among those that garnered much less support as demonstrations of patriotism; just 21 percent would call a flag-burner patriotic. See the Poll du Jour at column’s end for more numbers.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Illinois Senate GOP Leader Christine Radogno will resign Saturday – Tina Sfondeles
http://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/illinois-senate-gop-leader-christine-radogno-will-resign-saturday/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno on Thursday announced she’s resigning. Radogno — the first female caucus leader in Illinois General Assembly history — will resign as leader and also as a senator on Saturday, the first day of a new fiscal year, and the looming deadline for a budget deal to be reached. “I have done everything I can do to resolve the state’s budget crisis. I will continue to do so for the coming days. But if the solution will not come on my watch, I hope and pray that the Governor, other legislative leaders, Democrats and Republicans in the Senate and House can find a path to solve the state’s problems,” Radogno said in a statement. Radogno and Illinois Senate President John Cullerton last December came together to craft the “grand bargain” package to try to end the impasse. While the plan fell apart at times, all measures within the package passed the Illinois Senate. It was Radogno, R-Lemont, who came to Cullerton to try to come up with a plan to try to solve the budget crisis. In her statement, Radogno thanked Cullerton for his “friendship and working relationship.” “Though I leave political office with a sense of sadness and some disappointment, I leave with no regrets. I did my best – that’s all I could do. It has been a privilege to serve. But now I am looking forward to returning to private life and spending time with my family, especially my five grandchildren.” Radogno began her third term as leader in 2013. She has served in the Illinois Senate since 1997 and represents the 41st District in DuPage, Will and Cook counties.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Illinois Senate Republican leader Radogno steps down – Rick Pearson
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-christine-radogono-retirement-illinois-senate-met-0630-20170629-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Sen. Christine Radogno, the first female legislative leader in Illinois history, said Thursday that she will resign from office effective Saturday. The resignation of the top Illinois Senate Republican comes a couple months after she and Democratic Senate President John Cullerton tried to negotiate an end to the record budget impasse. Those talks fell apart, and Democrats blamed Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, who had been shut out of the talks. “I believe it’s time for a new Senate Republican leader. I have done everything I can do to resolve the state’s budget crisis. I will continue to do so for the coming days,” Radogno said in a statement. “But if the solution will not come on my watch, I hope and pray that the governor, other legislative leaders, Democrats and Republicans in the Senate and House can find a path to solve the state’s problems. Radogno, 64, of southwest suburban Lemont, said she is leaving office “with a sense of sadness and some disappointment” but “with no regrets.” “I did my best — that’s all I could do. It has been a privilege to serve. But now I am looking forward to returning to private life and spending time with my family, especially my five grandchildren,” she said. Even before her announcement, behind-the-scenes efforts to replace Radogno were being made by state Sen. Bill Brady of Bloomington, who served as her top deputy in the Senate GOP caucus, and by state Sen. Karen McConnaughay, the former Kane County Board chairwoman from St. Charles, legislative sources said. Talk of Radogno’s decision had begun spreading privately during the closing days of June in the aftermath of months of contentiousness with a Democratic legislative majority and a demanding Republican governor who has extensively used his personal wealth to command loyalty among GOP lawmakers. Radogno found her members’ loyalty to Rauner sometimes created problems with loyalty to her leadership, some GOP lawmakers said privately. That surfaced in attempts with Democrat Cullerton to negotiate an end to the state’s historic budget impasse known as the “grand bargain.” Rauner contended the so-called bargain did not go far enough and Democrats accused him of stripping away votes from a version of the package. Though Radogno has been in the General Assembly for 20 years, a decision to step down had been expected as the grind of legislative sessions, particularly serving in the minority, began to take its toll. Besides the political battles, Radogno also had some personal tragedies during her tenure, including the June 2014 death of her 31-year-old daughter, Lisa. In 2009, Radogno became the first woman to lead one of the four legislative caucuses. She succeeded Frank Watson of Downstate Greenville, who had suffered a stroke. Before running for the Senate, she was a La Grange trustee for seven years. Prior to that, she was a social worker at Mercy Center for Health Care Services. She holds a master’s degree in social work from Loyola University.)

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20170629/BLOGS02/170629827/radogno-quits-as-state-budget-war-deepens
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s a sign of just how bad the state’s budget war has become: One of the few officials widely considered to be someone who could and would compromise has announced her resignation, effective July 1. In a stunning—but not wholly unexpected—development, Sen. Christine Radogno of Lemont said she will step down as a senator and the Senate GOP leader on the same day the state’s new fiscal year will begin, quite likely without a budget in hand. “I have done everything I can do to resolve the state’s budget crisis,” Radogno said in a statement after meeting with her caucus. “I will continue to do so for the coming days. But if the solution will not come on my watch, I hope and pray that the governor, other legislative leaders, Democrats and Republicans in the Senate and House can find a path to solve the state’s problems.” She added: “Though I leave political office with a sense of sadness and some disappointment, I leave with no regrets. I did my best; that’s all I could do.” There was no immediate word on a replacement. Her departure clearly will not help resolve a heavily bitter and personal fight between two strong-willed men at the center of the budget battle: Gov. Bruce Rauner and House Speaker Mike Madigan. Along with Senate Democratic Leader John Cullerton, who has denied rumors about his impending resignation, Radogno crafted a “grand bargain” package that represented the only forward movement in years on a budget. While it never did come to a vote, it formed the basis of the budget and tax-hike plan that Cullerton sent to the Senate, and which now is pending in the House. Perhaps Radogno’s announcement will kick something into high gear in the hours that remain before July 1. But the signs at the moment aren’t great.)

The suit was filed in 2016 by then-Highway Commissioner Stan Wojtasiak against then-Supervisor Rachel Ossyra and then-trustees Janice Anderson and Kerry Malm, charging their 2016 action to cut his budget by 21 percent — $540,000 — was retaliatory and politically motivated. In their decision, appellate Justices Kathryn Zenoff and Joseph Birkett ruled Wojtasiak’s case was moot because all of the officials named in the complaint are out of office and the township’s 2016-17 fiscal year concluded March 31. Anderson was elected to the DuPage County Board, and Wojtasiak, Ossyra and Malm lost their seats to Democratic candidates in the spring primary. A 2017-18 budget was adopted recently by the new board.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: With the Senate health-care bill delayed for now, the conservative and more centrist GOP wings need to bridge a philosophical gap to succeed. The outcome of this debate will define what the Republican Party stands for—and whether the problems of America’s entitlement state can ever be solved. The biggest policy divide concerns the future of Medicaid, and here the problem is the moderates who are acting like liberals. Despite their campaign rhetoric, some Senators now want to ratify ObamaCare’s Medicaid expansion as an unrepealable and unreformable welfare program. Most of the Affordable Care Act’s insurance coverage gains have come from opening Medicaid eligibility beyond its original goal of helping the poor and disabled to include prime-age, able-bodied adults. The federal-state program has become the world’s single largest insurer by enrollment, covering more people than Medicare or the British National Health Service. FREEDOM’S JOURNAL
— THE COST OF MEDICAID – Star Parker  (DIERSEN: According to Democrats, if you are not on Medicaid, you are rich.)
https://freedomsjournalinstitute.org/latest-news/opinion/the-cost-of-medicaid/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The number of Americans enrolled in Medicaid has increased from 29 million in 1990 to 73 million today — an increase of 252 percent over a period when the nation’s population increased 30 percent. Total spending on Medicaid today is $574 billion, 275 percent above the $209 billion of 2000. Medicaid amounts to about 40 percent of the total spending on the 10 largest means-tested federal government programs targeted at low-income Americans. According to the Congressional Budget Office, spending on these programs has tripled as a percentage of our GDP over the last 40 years. Does all this mean we are becoming a more fair and compassionate nation? That might have been the intention. But if we honestly look at what is happening, we will see things have gone badly astray.)

— Democrats’ Best Chance to Retake the House? 8 Types of G.O.P. Districts to Watch – Nate Cohn
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/26/upshot/best-chance-to-retake-the-house-8-types-of-gop-districts-to-watch.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Suburban Survivors: Mike Coffman, Colo. 6; Erik Paulsen, Minn. 3; Ryan Costello, Pa. 6; Peter Roskam, Ill. 6; Pat Meehan, Pa. 7; Rodney Frelinghuysen, N.J. 11; Dave Reichert, Wash. 8; John Katko, N.Y. 24; Frank LoBiondo, N.J. 2  Democrats often look at the seats where Mrs. Clinton won and assume those are the easiest seats to win in 2018. But any Democrat familiar with the names in this section knows it’s not so easy. These battle-tested incumbents generally represent classic battleground districts, like the suburbs around Denver or Philadelphia. Yet they have consistently run far ahead of the national party’s performance in presidential elections. These seats would instantly be among the top Democratic targets in the country — if the Republican incumbents retired. As it is, none of these incumbents will be easy for Democrats to defeat. A few, like Frank LoBiondo of New Jersey, might escape without a competitive race at all. But most of these representatives will probably find themselves in highly competitive races. In a tough year for Republicans, several would probably lose. But many would probably survive, despite their district’s Democratic lean in presidential elections. Many of these representatives even survived the big Democratic waves in 2006 and 2008. If Washington’s Dave Reichert wins re-election, he will be the only Republican to have won in 2006 and 2008 in a district carried by Al Gore and John Kerry, and to win re-election in 2018 in a district carried by Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton.  Most have survived in part by amassing a moderate voting record to please their moderate constituents. True to form, six of them voted “no” on the Republican health care bill, including Mr. Reichert. The three who voted for the bill — Peter Roskam, Erik Paulsen and Rodney Frelinghuysen — might now find it harder to pitch themselves as moderate voices in Washington.)

MONEY MAGAZINE
— This Is Why the Number of Ultra-Rich Americans Is Surging – Rob Wile (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, Democrats demonize, denigrate, and condemn Republicans as being rich.  According to Democrats, you are rich if you are not on welfare. How many of the 73,110 ultra-high-net-worth individuals in America are Republican and how many are Democrat?)
http://time.com/money/4833875/ultra-wealthy-americans-millionaire-billionaire/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: There were 73,110 ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) individuals in America in 2016, an increase of 6.7% from the year before, according to new data from the wealth information firm Wealth-X. The total is roughly the equivalent to the seating capacity of New Orleans’ Superdome. Another way to look at it is that one in every 4,500 Americans now has an ultra-high net worth, defined as $30 million or more. The surge was driven large by a strengthening U.S. dollar, which in turn drove equities, Wealth-X says.)
