WHEATON RECORD
— Wheaton College’s history of political involvement – Kelsey Plankeel
http://www.wheatonrecord.com/news/wheatons-history-political-involvement/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Despite not hosting a presidential candidate since 1992, Wheaton College has a rich history of hosting, producing and gaining support from prominent political leaders since its foundation by Jonathan Blanchard — who once ran for president himself — in 1860. Of all of Wheaton’s renowned visitors, perhaps the most impressive are the nine presidential candidates who visited Wheaton’s campus between 1960 and 1992. The first was Richard M. Nixon, the Vice President and 1960 Republican presidential candidate at the time. Nixon appeared at a rally on McCully field and, according to the Wheaton College Archives, encouraged the crowd to “strengthen the faith of America” and “see that young people grow up with faith in God.” Nixon later won the presidency. President Jimmy Carter was the last president to visit Wheaton. He delivered the February 1992 LeRoy H. Pfund Lecture. Other visitors with presidential aspirations included Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman to serve in both houses of Congress, 1964 Republican candidate Barry Goldwater, 1972 Democratic candidate George McGovern, President Ronald Reagan, President George H.W. Bush and the Reverend Jesse Jackson. Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan, a populist Democrat who ran for president in 1896, 1900 and 1908, was also a guest of Wheaton. Most recently, 2012 Republican Vice Presidential and current Speaker of the House Paul Ryan gave a speech at a Wheaton breakfast in spring of 2015. Many alumni have also gone on to become recognized public figures. Disgraced ex-Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert was a 1964 graduate. At one point, Hastert served in Congress alongside three other Wheaton graduates: Republican Indiana Senator Dan Coats ’65, Republican Michigan Representative Paul B. Henry ’63 and Democratic Washington Representative Jim McDermott ’58. Other alumni in politics include Michael Gerson ’86, chief speechwriter for President George W. Bush who helped write Bush’s memorable post-9/11 speeches. More infamously, David R. Young Jr. ’59 was a special assistant at the National Security Council in the Nixon Administration. Young co-founded the White House Special Investigations Unit — known as “The Plumbers” — known for breaking into a psychiatry office and later attempting to break into the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate complex, instigating the Watergate scandal. Additionally, several public figures have supported Wheaton financially in the past as Trustees. Owen Lovejoy was a founding Trustee of Wheaton College, U.S. Congressman and friend of Abraham Lincoln. A scholarship was later presented in his name. Another trustee, Salmon P. Chase, was a Senator, governor of Ohio, Secretary of the Treasury and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Chase was the great-great uncle of Wheaton’s sixth president and the great-great-great uncle of Ken Chase, current chair of the Communication department at Wheaton. He is also the face of the $10,000 bill. David Iglesias, current director of the Wheaton Center for Faith, Politics and Economics and professor of politics and law, graduated from Wheaton in 1980. In 2001, Iglesias was appointed the U.S. State Attorney for the District of New Mexico under the Bush administration. He also served in the U.S. Navy in 2008 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom as a terrorism and war crimes prosecutor and has held various other national and state positions. Iglesias said Wheaton helped prepare him for public service in three ways: “It gave me the confidence to speak in public; it gave me the Biblical basis for getting involved in the political process; it helped me organize my thoughts and ensure I was focusing on facts, not arguments.” Politics and international relations department chair and associate professor of politics Bryan McGraw said Wheaton tries to “prepare all of our students to exercise leadership in whatever field they choose to go into.” Specifically, Wheaton equips aspiring political leaders to use the gifts given to them to effect justice worldwide, according to McGraw. “We would hope that Wheaton graduates — and Christians more broadly — would be more likely to grasp that call clearly and have the freedom and courage to put it into effect.”)

NBC5
— Kirk Campaign Responds to Racially-Charged Debate Comment  Sen. Mark Kirk’s campaign issued a statement Friday in response to a racially-charged comment the senator made about Rep. Tammy Duckworth’s parents at Thursday’s debate. – Tom Schuba
http://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/Kirk-Campaign-Senator-Honors-Duckworths-Military-Service-399040371.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sen. Mark Kirk’s campaign issued a statement Friday in response to a racially-charged comment the senator made about Rep. Tammy Duckworth’s parents at Thursday’s debate. “Senator Kirk has consistently called Rep. Duckworth a war hero and honors her family’s service to this country,” Kirk spokeswoman Eleni Demertzis said in a statement. “But that’s not what this debate was about. Rep. Duckworth lied about her legal troubles, was unable to defend her failures at the VA and then falsely attacked Senator Kirk over his record on supporting gay rights.” At Thursday’s debate, which was hosted at the University of Illinois Springfield’s Sangamon Auditorium, Kirk mocked Duckworth’s family history of military service after the congresswoman said her family has “served this nation in uniform going back to the Revolution.” “I had forgotten your parents came all the way from Thailand to serve George Washington,” Kirk responded. Duckworth, who lost both legs piloting a Black Hawk helicopter over Iraq in 2004, was born in Bangkok to a Thai mother of Chinese descent. Her father was a U.S. Army veteran. Kirk’s comment was met with silence in the auditorium and thunderous condemnation on social media. “That remark made by [Mark Kirk] about [Tammy Duckworth’s] ancestry is about the lowest thing I’ve seen in a debate,” Capitol Fax’s Rich Miller said in a tweet. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway also took the opportunity to slam Kirk, who has disavowed Trump and taken out ads distancing himself from the divisive billionaire. “The same Mark Kirk that unendorsed his party’s presidential candidate and called him out in paid ads,” Conway tweeted Thursday. “Gotcha. Good luck.”)

In recent weeks, that has meant more than $250,000 spent in radio and television ads supporting Park Ridge Republican Mel Thillens’ campaign for 28th state Senate, more than $175,000 for ads supporting Republican Heidi Holan of Glendale Heights in her campaign for 46th House, and more than $225,000 on ads in support of Dawn Abernathy of Mundelein in her campaign for 59th state House, among others. Proft recently created political mailings designed to look like newspapers, including the Lake County Gazette and DuPage Policy Journal, holds DuPage County Republicans responsible for loss of influence at the polls, and offers some support of Donald Trump’s bid for president. Here’s a conversation with Proft, edited for length. . .Q. Do you see the DuPage GOP stronghold as eroding?  A. Clearly, DuPage is less competitive than it was when I was growing up. It’s self-inflicted wounds. It’s our own bad actors and bad actions. It’s cycle after cycle of bad candidates in bad races and bad political leadership and being junior partners to the Democrats and some people think DuPage should be run like a mini Cook County. Think about this: In 1998, George Ryan got 72 percent of the vote in DuPage County. And in 2010, Bill Brady got 52 percent. For the second most populous county, most Republican county, that is an unbelievable amount of attrition in a relatively short period of time. When demographics change, you incorporate new people into the party. We didn’t do that, partly because we told people to wait your turn. It was an outdated system that pushed talent away and bred corruption and incompetence.)

LOYOLA PHOENIX
— Mock Border Wall Sparks Immigration Dialogue – Chris Hacker  (DIERSEN: I earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976. How soon, if not already, will Loyola officially announce that it will only admit students who are anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors?)
http://www.loyolaphoenix.com/2016/10/mock-border-wall-sparks-immigration-dialogue/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Build the wall” has become a rallying cry for millions of conservative Americans who feel left behind by an increasingly diverse America. And “build the wall” is exactly what a group of Loyola students did, but for a very different reason than some conservatives might. “It isn’t about some wall hundreds of miles away,” said junior Addison Mauck, who organized the Mock Border Wall project that was displayed on Loyola’s West Quad from Oct. 18–20. “The purpose of this project is to humanize the topic of immigration and combat the negative rhetoric of the current political season.” The words, “No human being is illegal” and “We are a nation of immigrants,” were displayed on hand-painted banners that hung from the wall’s steel fencing. Despite the project’s supportive message, it garnered harsh criticism from undocumented students who felt they weren’t given a voice in the installation. About 20 signs that read, “Majority of undocumented students were not consulted for this,” were posted on the wall in protest. “We had a student [in] our organization who represented the community of undocumented students because we do not want to force anyone to speak about something that can be very personal and private,” Mauck said in response to the criticism. That student to whom Mauck referred, who wished to remain anonymous because of the sensitive nature of her immigration status, said her role in the project was not very significant. “It raises the question of why more students weren’t reached out to by anyone other than me, because I was not an organizer of the project,” she said. “Our community, both undocumented and immigrant, does have a voice on campus, and other people should not be speaking for us.” Loyola has taken steps to support that community of undocumented students. In 2001, Loyola became involved in the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, which provides a pathway to citizenship for children of undocumented parents. Since 2012, about 150 students and faculty have completed “Share the DREAM,” which is training to become an ally for undocumented students, offered by Loyola’s Department of Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (SDMA), said SDMA director Joe Saucedo. The training is a three-hour long session that covers DREAM Act legislation, the barriers undocumented students face and the personal stories that those students bring with them, according to Joe Saucedo. “It’s important to know that these students’ status of being undocumented is one aspect of who they are, but it’s not all of who they are,” Saucedo said. “[The training] indicates to someone who may carry those identities that this is a safe space and there are people who get them and understand.”  In order to make it easier for undocumented students to attend Loyola, students voted in 2015 to include a $2.50 fee to each student’s tuition, creating the Magis Scholarship Fund, which provides free tuition and housing to five undocumented students every year. One recipient of the scholarship, sophomore Vince Garcia, said he appreciated Loyola’s support of undocumented students but revealed that he hasn’t received any communication or resources from the university since receiving the scholarship. He said his academic advisor hasn’t completed the DREAM ally training. “I’d say they should communicate better, because I always have questions about health insurance, for example, and I feel like I don’t have anyone to talk to,” said Garcia, a social work major who wants to help undocumented students like himself get a head start. “I think we’re getting better at this. Part of our job is taking stock of the barriers that students face, and we try to bring in the students themselves and ask them how they feel,” said Saucedo. “The most important thing we can do, as people with citizenship privilege who can vote, is to continue to elect politicians who will support these programs and keep the interests of undocumented students in mind.”)

— Democrats see themselves as Teslas, Republicans as Corvettes  Respondents said Trump should drive an Escalade, Clinton a Mercedes GL-Class. – Danny King  (DIERSEN: The cars that you own say more about you than anything that you can say about yourself.  I have owned my 1972 Chevy Corvette since 1971, my 2005 Chevy Corvette since 2005, my 2016 Ford Mustang since 2016, my 2013 Dodge Charger R/T Max since 2012, my 2003 Chevy Cavalier LS since 2010, and my 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX since 1995.)
http://www.autoblog.com/2016/10/26/democrats-tesla-republicans-corvettes/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Given a tidy sum of money to spend on a vehicle, many Democrats would buy a Tesla Model S electric vehicle, while a lot of Republicans would choose a Chevrolet Corvette. That’s one politically quirky result of a poll taken by Swapalease last month, which linked respondent’s political preferences to car choices. About 2,500 people participated in the unscientific, opt-in survey. When asked what kind of car best suited their personalities, Democrats were most likely to choose the Tesla, while Republicans saw themselves as ‘Vette-like. The Tesla/Corvette dichotomy also split down gender lines, as many men wanted Corvettes (no shock there) and women preferred Teslas. Other cars that registered on the “personality” list were big sellers such as the Honda Accord and Ford F-150 as well as the Hummer and the Chevrolet Volt. Take a look here for Swapalease’s data from the survey results. Granted, the results of the poll were tilted a bit, as the respondents were two-thirds male, while Republicans outnumbered Democrats by a 3-to-2 margin. When guessing which cars the presidential candidates would prefer to drive, the respondents said Republican candidate Donald Trump would drive a Cadillac Escalade, while Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton would choose a Mercedes-Benz GL Class. With the survey pool leaning Republican, 39 percent of those polled said they would vote for Trump, 36 percent would choose Clinton, and the rest would choose the always-elusive “Someone Else.” On that note, when given various choices to describe the “personality of this year’s election,” a third of those polled said “a driverless car.” As for how long the respondents said they’d keep their cars, most ranged from 21 to 36 months. Which is quite a bit shorter than a presidential term. Even with the unscientific methods at use here, we can perhaps learn a little something, since the connection between electric cars and Democrats has been seen before. But, naturally, we know that Republicans can like Tesla, too. Some of them even buy five of them. They just might be outliers.)

http://www.bizjournals.com/chicago/news/2016/10/25/how-gov-rauner-salary-compares-to-his-peers.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Public payroll data from all 50 states indicates that the average U.S. governor earns $137,415 per year in salary, with variances ranging from a low of $70,000 to a high of just under $200,000 per year. By those measures, the average governor’s pay is nothing to slouch at — especially when considering that the median household income in the United States hovers around $52,000 per year. However, it does pale in comparison to the eight-figure paydays that are increasingly common among private-sector CEOs, many of whom oversee far-smaller budgets and workforces relative to the typical state governor. Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner, who has been in office since January 2015 and oversees an annual state budget of $38.6 billion, is expected to earn $177,412 this year, which puts him at No. 5 among the 50 state governors. His pay is at 129 percent of the national average. But it must be noted that Rauner forgoes an annual salary from the state.)

— Federal employees shun Trump, give big money to Clinton – Jonathan Swan  (DIERSEN: If I was still a federal employee, because of their hatred of Trump and because of their hatred of my demographics, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworker, and subordinates would have killed me by now figuratively, if not literally.)
http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/302817-government-workers-shun-trump-give-big-money-to-clinton-campaign
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Federal government employees are opening their wallets to help Hillary Clinton beat Donald Trump on Nov. 8. Of the roughly $2 million that federal workers from 14 agencies spent on presidential politics by the end of September, about $1.9 million, or 95 percent, went to the Democratic nominee’s campaign, according to an analysis by The Hill. Employees at all the agencies analyzed, without exception, are sending their campaign contributions overwhelmingly to Clinton over her Republican counterpart. Several agencies, such as the State Department, which Clinton once led, saw more than 99 percent of contributions going to Clinton. Employees of the Department of Justice, which investigated Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of State, gave Clinton 97 percent of their donations. Trump received $8,756 from DOJ employees compared with $286,797 for Clinton. From IRS employees, Clinton received 94 percent of donations. Federal government employees overwhelmingly backed Clinton’s presidential campaign no matter which agency The Hill analyzed using Federal Election Commission data covering donors giving more than $200. Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller said these donation patterns are more evidence of the “rigged system” favoring establishment candidates like Clinton over outsiders like Trump. The Trump campaign has been citing lopsided media donations to Clinton — though there’s no evidence they’re coming from reporters covering Trump — as further evidence that the game is fixed. But David Schultz, a Hamline University Professor of Political Science, said government employees have historically favored Democratic candidates over Republicans both in their voting habits and political contributions made in their personal time. Under the Hatch Act, federal government employees are banned from engaging in political activities, including making campaign contributions, during work hours. “Government employees are, on balance, more moderate or more liberal as opposed to the general population,” Schultz said. “Not across the board, but in general.” Government employees are “more likely to believe in government as opposed to, let’s say, a privatization program,” he added, “programs that we would view as hostile to government.” Republicans typically campaign on promises to slash government payrolls, which helps explain why recent GOP presidential candidates have received the smaller share of donations from government workers. Yet while Republicans usually do worse than Democrats, Trump appears to be doing especially poorly in fundraising from government employees. The 2012 GOP presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, received 14 percent of donations from the same group of agencies surveyed for Trump. Trump received just 5 percent. Romney got close to $300,000 more from these same departments’ employees than Trump has four years later. Comparisons to previous presidential candidates are of limited value, since they took public funding for their general election campaigns. Trump might have had a chance to do better than Romney. He discarded much of Republican orthodoxy during his primary campaign, which could have led some federal employees to believe that he’d be more amenable to big government. He vowed, for example, to leave massive social welfare programs virtually untouched. But Trump also constantly attacked federal institutions. During his primary campaign, he described the federal government as a corrupt, bloated body run by “very, very, stupid people.” Trump vowed “tremendous cutting” of the government in an interview with The Wall Street Journal in January and singled out the Department of Education and the Environmental Protection Agency as agencies he’d slash dramatically if not outright eliminate. Agency employees have likely taken note of Trump’s hostile rhetoric. In the Department of Education’s case, that included Trump’s pledges to hand over control to the states and to fight tooth and nail against Common Core standards. From Department of Education employees this cycle, Trump received three donations totaling $220. Clinton received 724 donations for more than $74,000. In all, she received 99.7 percent of donations from employees of the department. Donations from the State Department, which Clinton ran from 2009 to 2013, were even more slanted in her favor. State Department employees gave Trump 39 donations, for $4,652. Over the same time period, they gave their former boss 2,518 donations, for $425,525. Throughout his campaign, Trump has portrayed himself as a strongman who would toughen up America’s defenses — both militarily and at the border — and who would take care of veterans. It’s probably no coincidence, therefore, that Trump performed best in donations among employees of three agencies: Defense, Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs. But even employees of these more Trump-friendly agencies have overwhelmingly contributed to Clinton’s campaign. From Defense employees, Trump received 341 donations for $43,575. Clinton got 2,392 donations for $225,560, giving her 84 percent of the money. From Homeland Security employees, Clinton got 90 percent of the donations, and from Veterans Affairs she took 88 percent. Romney performed significantly better than Trump with employees at all three agencies, receiving, for example, $98,153 from Defense employees, which amounted 21 percent of donations. During the Republican primaries, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said, “Let’s create a little bit of a recession in Washington, D.C., so that we can have economic prosperity outside of Washington.” Fear of such plans might be the truest explanation of these uniformly lopsided donations. Schultz, the Hamline professor, said “self-preservation”— particularly for workers engaged in public sector unions — probably motivates their political giving. “This means support for their jobs,” he said. “Clinton, for the most part, is going to be probably a continuation of more or less what Obama is.” Federal government employees, he said, are likely “more willing to give to somebody who would be more predictable in terms of supporting their livelihood, their jobs, as opposed to somebody who might be less predictable.”)

http://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/mihalopoulos-county-dem-boss-making-a-list-and-checking-it-twice/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It ain’t easy being a Chicago political boss these days. Just ask Joe Berrios, the supposed leader of the party that dominates Cook County. Berrios expected each committeeman from Chicago’s 50 wards and the 30 suburban Cook townships to “buy a table” at the county Democratic Party fundraiser on Oct. 13. Some have not done their share, prompting a terse letter from county party headquarters. In an email obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times, a top Berrios aide comes off sounding more like the Nicor collections department than a political boss’ enforcer. “You are receiving this notice because you did not support our 10/13 fundraiser by purchasing any tickets,” wrote Jacob Kaplan, the county Democrats’ executive director. “The Chairman asked all committeemen to support the event by purchasing 10 tickets (at $200 each).” I talked to one committeeman who’s openly bucking Boss Berrios and three others who said they were withholding payment to the party but didn’t want to be publicly identified. Berrios is threatening to out the scofflaws at Friday’s meeting of party brass at the Erie Cafe, a Near North Side restaurant where the chairman’s own political funds have dropped more than $70,000 in the last few years. Kaplan warned the committeemen: “A report on the October fundraiser will be produced at our committeemen pre-election meeting next Friday (10/28) at Erie Cafe. Several committeemen have requested a list of committeemen who have not supported the party’s October fundraiser. If you do not want to be on this list, please reply and let us know how many tickets you will be sending a check into the party for.” Kaplan would not name the committeemen who have not complied with the boss’ fundraising request. Nor would he tell me which of the nice committeemen requested a list of the naughty. “There’s about 15 or so holdouts,” Kaplan said Tuesday. “Some [contributions] may come in by Friday.” Kaplan acknowledged that “it’s not like the old days,” when a Cook County Democratic boss such as Dick Daley could growl an order and every committeeman would heel instantly. “We just ask everybody to contribute something they can afford, even if it’s just one ticket, to share the burden of keeping the party going,” Kaplan said. Many committeemen already paid their share, or even gave much more than what was sought, according to campaign-finance reports. The party reported getting $10,000 from two campaign funds controlled by 14th Ward boss Ed Burke, while John Daley’s 11th Ward Democrats contributed $2,000. In June, the county party organization got $25,000 from Toni Preckwinkle, the County Board president who’s also 4th Ward committeeman and an executive vice chairman of the county Democrats. But 1st Ward Ald. and Committeeman Proco Joe Moreno says he won’t give a dime. He noted that Berrios, Kaplan and other county party officials helped a candidate who tried to unseat him in the committeeman’s race earlier this year. In 2014, Moreno supported a successful challenger against Berrios’ daughter Toni, who had been a state representative. “I have a strong, powerful, progressive ward organization,” Moreno said. “I don’t need to give money to his a– to work against me.” Moreno said he’s considering running against Berrios for the chairman’s day job as county assessor. Another committeeman, who asked not to be identified, said of Berrios, “Why give him money? I don’t understand. He hasn’t done anything for me.” Berrios may manage to placate them. But the only person he really must be sure to please is the true boss — the state party chairman and Illinois House speaker, Mike Madigan. If the fundraising request had come from Madigan, there’s little doubt all 80 committeemen would pull out their checkbooks as quickly as the Erie Cafe’s waiters hustle to serve Berrios.)

Rauner, a man financed by billionaire Ken Griffin, who makes $90,000 an hour,” one protester wrote, according to the Maroon. Even though the students expressed disgust with the budget crisis in May, they still demonstrated vehemently in favor of free tuition, claiming students only have to pay for school because billionaires are not paying their “fair share.” One sign at the protest read, “Bruce Rauner, Ken Griffin, and IL tax dodgers: Pay up for free higher ed,” while another said, “Make LaSalle St. pay, not the 99%.” “Griffin paid $300 million for one painting. Wonder how many student artists that could’ve sent to college?)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2016/10/25/are-you-a-woman-looking-for-a-top-job-try-the-federal-government/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For every chair occupied by a woman in the corporate C-suite, six are filled by a man. In the federal government, it’s 1 out of every 3. Women are gradually advancing to the highest levels of government, where they now represent 33.7 percent of the leaders known as senior executives. These are the mostly career managers who carry out the mandate of the White House, occupying key roles just below top presidential appointees. In the civilian world, they’re the generals and admirals who run their agencies day-to-day. Women and men have not reached parity in the top ranks of government. But among the 7,187 career senior executives, they’ve reached pay parity, with women getting a slight edge. Their $175,451 average salary is $479 more than men’s.  Women have climbed further than their male counterparts at private companies, where just 16 percent of executives are women, according to an analysis by McKinsey & Company, working with the Partnership for Public Service. The Government Accountability Office, a little-known agency that acts as the government’s fiscal watchdog, has quietly cultivated a culture that has helped women thrive. The result? Women make up 41 percent of the senior executives there, substantially above the government-wide average. The GAO has what’s best described as an unglamorous mission: It audits government programs for Congress to ensure that taxpayers get the most efficient and accountable spending for their money. The audits released this month include titles such as “Agencies Have Sound Procedures for Managing Exchanges but Could Improve Inventory Monitoring” (on nuclear material) and “Guidance Needed for Completing Required Impact Assessments Prior to Presidential Drawdowns” (on security assistance). Arcane as the work is, it gets results: Federal agencies act on about 80 percent of the GAO’s recommendations to improve their operations, even if some guidance takes years to be implemented. Yet the GAO is not just a good place to work (it consistently ranks near the top among midsize agencies in the Best Places to Work in the Federal Government annual rankings) but a good place to work for women. Of the agency’s 121 senior executives, 50 are women, including the general counsel and chief operating officer. “With the wide variety of work we’re doing, you want to have a representative workforce,” Eugene Dodaro, the comptroller general of the United States and GAO head, said in an interview. Government agencies have long prided themselves on helping their employees balance their work and personal lives. The GAO’s approach is more serious than most: day care on site at the Washington headquarters, a student loan repayment program, a generous telework policy — 65 percent of the staff worked from home one day or more per pay period last year — and a flexible relocation policy. When she was hired 26 years ago as an entry-level analyst right out of graduate school, Orice Williams Brown told herself she would do this for a few years until the financial markets, still reeling from a crash, recovered. Her first assignment was to investigate why the Internal Revenue Service was not using interest on municipal bonds that local governments had returned to the federal government. “I was totally hooked,” she recalled. She was promoted to senior executive in 2005, in charge of the team that audits financial markets and community investment. Five years ago, she was made a managing director. “The work is extremely appealing,” Williams Brown, 50, said. “It’s a family-friendly culture. I’ve seen people advance regardless of where they are in their personal life. I’ve seen people promoted who are out on maternity leave.” She said that by having employees work in teams with experts from different disciplines, the GAO puts a premium on collaborative skills and coming to collective decisions. “That’s one of the things women are really socialized to do.” For Susan Poling, the GAO’s stable leadership is a big factor in why she and other women thrive. The agency is not run by a political appointee whose face changes every four years, but by a nonpartisan civil servant who serves a 15-year term. Like many lawyers, Poling found that government gives women opportunities to advance without working the 70-and 80-hour weeks that are essential to making partner at corporate firms. “One of the things I bring is that I’ve been a working mother, and I have other men and women on my staff who are working parents,” she said. When she was hired to the GAO in 1990 from the Department of Education, she worked part time so she could spend more time with her young son. “But they didn’t shunt me over and not give me great things to do,” she said. Today, as a full-time senior executive, Poling supervises 156 lawyers. And at 68, she has no plans to retire anytime soon. “I’m still enjoying myself.”)

BIZ PAC REVIEW
— ‘NeverTrump’ revenge: Judge orders all pro-Trump material removed from Phyllis Schlafly’s Eagle Forum – Warner Todd Huston
http://www.bizpacreview.com/2016/10/24/nevertrump-revenge-judge-orders-pro-trump-material-removed-phyllis-schlaflys-eagle-forum-403944
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Even weeks after her passing, conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly is suffering attacks from #NeverTrumpers and an activist judge. For what Schlafly’s son, Roger Schlafly, calls indecipherable reasons, low-rated Illinois Judge John B. Barberis has ordered Schlafly’s Eagle Forum to remove all pro-Trump articles which were posted to the group’s website after April 10, 2016. Schlafly spent the last year of her life supporting GOP nominee Donald Trump for the presidency. But she also spent it arguing with a small handful of board members of her own organization about that support. And now, in the weeks after her death, that small group of officers have taken Eagle Forum to court and have somehow succeeded in getting a judge to shut down the Eagle Forum political action organization Schlafly spent a lifetime building. All in an effort to eliminate information about the very candidate she fully supported. In the months before her passing, Phyllis fought off the small group of board members who tried to oust her from the very organization she built. And it was all because she supported Donald Trump against their wishes. In April she issued a video telling the world she was still in charge. But apparently the fight has now continued beyond her death. This month Judge Barberis issued an order filled with demands that Schlafly’s son, Roger, feels are if not illegal, at the very least un-American. The judge’s order seems to be compelling people not a party to the #NeverTrumpers’ lawsuit to do things. For instance, Roger was not named in any of the lawsuits brought against Eagle Forum by the handful of #NeverTrump board members, yet the judge’s order says that Roger must remove all pro-Trump items from the Eagle Forum website. Roger Schlafly, though, decided to take the whole website down and leave an explanation letter in its place because he can’t understand the order given by this #NeverTrump judge. The lawsuit is against Eagle Forum c4 but orders me personally to assist in transferring “Eagle Forum [c4] Property”. This is in spite of the fact that I am not a party to the case, and the court papers say that I am “not associated or affiliated with Eagle Forum [c4] in any way.” Roger also noted that the judge is demanding that he and others on the board refrain from advocating for any political positions as the #NeverTrump activists continue their lawsuit. I have never heard of any political advocacy organization being ordered not to express opinions on a web site. Not in the USA, anyway. I thought that the First Amendment prohibited that sort of thing. Roger goes on to say that the judge also told him he is not allowed to even talk to “third parties” about anything involving Eagle Forum. He then asks since when does any American need permission from a government to talk to a third-party about anything? He concludes explaining what he is doing with the site…  Complying with this order will not be easy. I am not sure exactly what was on the site on April 10. If I remove the pro-Trump articles, I will create dead links. If I explain the dead links, I might be accused of advocating something. I am reluctant to even post the court order, as that might be construed as advocating about litigation. I am not sure that the Eagle Forum c4 even has any property on the web site. Most of the site involves political works and activities of Phyllis Schlafly, and these have nothing to do with the plaintiffs in this lawsuit. I have tried to understand the their demands, but they have never even expressed any interest in the web site, as far as I know. Rolling back Phyllis Schlafly’s web site to purge her pro-Trump views is a dishonest and treacherous thing to do, and I refuse to do it, unless forced by the court. So I am shutting down the eagleforum.org web site for now. I am very sorry about this, and hope to have it back up when the legal issues are settled. So, who is this Judge John B. Barberis? He is the judge on the Illinois Third Judicial Circuit Court and is running to fill a vacancy on the Illinois Fifth District Appellate Court. But Barberis, running as a Republican, was not endorsed by the Illinois State Bar Association and was rated as “not recommended” in 2014.)

That is certainly not my understanding. At all. I would be happy to look into it, but that is not my understanding,” Clinton replied. The attendee was insistent and said, “it ultimately ended up benefiting white women.” “See I taught at the University of Arkansas Law School. And I taught a lot of black students who were admitted on affirmative action and who needed a lot of help,” Clinton replied. The Democratic presidential nominee added, “And they would not have been there but for affirmative action.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Requiring employers to provide paid sick leave apparently is good for more than workers. Three of the key sponsors of a new Chicago ordinance mandating five days a year paid sick leave were honored at a fundraiser earlier this week thrown by a group known as the Political Fund of Illinois, and it looks like the group did pretty well. With ticket packages going for as much as $5,000, the event pulled in “in the six figures,” according to the fund’s Zack Koutsky, the legislative director of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 881, which sponsored the leadership PAC. “We had just over 100 people” at the event at Kendall College, including U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and ex-Gov. Pat Quinn.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: DePaul wants more protests?  Some Chicago-area universities are sponsoring training in political activism this fall – but it appears to be tilted towards progressive causes only. The administration at Northwestern University is putting on “Social Justice Advocacy Training” Friday. The promotional poster for the event promotes liberal causes such as Black Lives Matter and NU Divest, which advocates boycott, divestment and sanction against Israel. Sponsored by the Leadership and Community Engagement office, participants will learn how to “Articulate the dynamics of political power, how to change those dynamics, and determine how and where to engage in policy change for social justice.” They will “Apply research, planning, and organizing strategies to engage and empower citizens and grassroots groups.”  Hey big spender  Right before Halloween, Loyola University Chicago is hosting a training to teach students how to lobby Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner for more funding under the Monetary Award Program (MAP) grant program, similar to the federal Pell grant program. For more than a year, MAP has faced a reduction in funding due to a budget impasse over a $4 billion deficit. In April, Rauner signed an education bill funding $170 million worth of MAP grants, about half the amount in a 2015 budget bill. Called the “MAP Advocacy Student Leader Summit,” the Oct. 29 summit promises to “give student leaders an opportunity to join a statewide coalition of grassroots advocacy on behalf students who receive MAP grants.” It is open to all “student leaders from Illinois public, private, and community colleges and universities, as well as government relations, media relations, and financial aid staff members.”  Participants will be trained on how to lobby the government for more money for Loyola, a Jesuit school. They will: Learn valuable advocacy tools for engaging legislators  Be able to coordinate their institution’s efforts with others Have the opportunity to network with fellow student leaders  Play an instrumental role in saving MAP Grants. Training new union activists  Last month, DePaul University hosted an “Activism Training” where anyone could “learn all about activism, protest and demonstrations” and “Learn what to do if you get arrested.” Participants at the Catholic school learned “new methods for starting a movement” and “about protesting on campus or off campus.” DePaul does not seem to have a problem with insufficient protests: Students took over an event by gay conservative provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos this summer, unimpeded by campus security. President Dennis Holtschneider blamed “both sides” for “intentionally provoking the others with inflammatory language.” DePaul, with the backing of union leaders, also sponsors a training school for future union activists, including mock collecting bargaining simulations. Loyola Chicago’s government affairs office, the lobbying arm of the university and sponsor of the MAP summit, did not respond to an email from The College Fix seeking more information on other trainings it offers to students. Northwestern’s media relations department did not respond to requests for comment.)

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-10-21/baby-boomers-swap-corvettes-for-comfort-as-sports-car-sales-fall
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mustangs, Porsches slip as buyers favor new sporty SUVs Chevy marketing less-expensive Camaro to younger consumers  Baby boomers are starting to outgrow their midlife crisis years, and that’s bad news for automakers who want to sell sports cars. It was a sign of things to come this month when Ford Motor Co. idled its Mustang plant for a week as sales for the year fell 9 percent. Other sports cars have faded at a similar rate, and even stalwarts like the Chevrolet Corvette and most Porsche models are slumping. While there are still plenty of buyers who love the passing lane, automakers face a pesky reality. Men born between 1946 and 1964, who buy most sports cars, are cruising past their peak spending years. And as age 70 beckons, folding up like an accordion to get into the front seat of a speedy roadster is hardly the prescription for an aching back. Some are even turning to high-powered versions of luxury sports utility vehicles. “Boomers are starting to age out of sports cars,” said Eric Noble, president of the CarLab, a consulting firm in Orange, California. “When you get into your 60s, comfort becomes more important. Sports cars are not going away, but the market will get smaller.” . . .  The generational handoff won’t help sports cars much either, Noble said, because there are fewer Generation Xers, or those about 35 to 50 years old. And the boomer children — the millennial generation — aren’t yet earning enough money to buy Mustangs, which start at $24,915, let alone a Corvette Z06 that can sell for more than $100,000, Noble said. Ford will probably sell more than 100,000 Mustangs this year, but through July about 25 percent have gone to car-rental agencies and other corporate fleets, according to R.L. Polk & Co., which tracks vehicle registrations. Even with that many cars going to fleet buyers, sales are off. This year, about 40 percent of Mustang buyers were baby boomers, down from 50 percent in 2013. The good news is that consumers in their 20s and 30s now make up 22 percent of Mustang buyers, compared with 15 percent three years ago, said Mark Schaller, marketing manager for the Mustang. But the buyer pool has shrunk. “We are seeing some older boomers move out,” Schaller said. “The Mustang is a life-stage vehicle.” Corvette, Camaro  Ford isn’t alone in seeing declines. Sales of the Camaro and Corvette are down 11 percent and 14 percent, respectively, this year. Part of Camaro’s drop is because General Motors Co. sells fewer of them to fleet buyers. Retail sales fell only 1 percent. “I don’t have one reason why it’s down,” said Todd Christensen, marketing manager for the Camaro and Corvette. “Boomers are still buying them, for sure.” Still, Chevy is trying to market the Camaro to younger buyers by promoting its smaller, cheaper 2-liter turbo engine in a package with high-performance parts that make the car handle like more expensive versions, Christensen said. Lifestyle Shift  Porsche may be seeing a similar shift, said Jessica Caldwell, an analyst with Edmunds.com, a car-shopping website. Coupes are no longer seen as cooler than a four-door car or SUV, she said. And with luxury brands like Porsche and Mercedes selling sporty-driving SUVs, the well-heeled can make a more practical purchase and still have some fun behind the wheel. A car that fits someone’s lifestyle and is still sporty is a better option than a true sports car, she said. That makes sense when you look at Porsche. This year and in 2015, the brand’s passenger car sales have fallen by 8 percent. At the same time, the Macan SUV has grown by 30 percent this year and is now Porsche’s top seller. Company spokesman Christian Koenig said the sales decline is due to replacement of the 911 and Boxster sports cars, which caused shortages of inventory, and the announcement of a new Panamera coming in January. Porsche believes the new sports cars will once again juice sales, he said. “We don’t really see a decline,” Koenig said. “Sports car sales in the U.S. has been a rock-solid business.” Research shows that car buyers, especially 20-somethings, still like sporty cars, according to Noble of the CarLab. They especially favor classics from the 1970s, the golden age of muscle cars. They just can’t afford them yet. And boomers want something comfortable but sporty. ‘Spirited Driving’  That’s why sales of BMW’s M edition and the Mercedes AMG are up, he said. Both are high-horsepower versions of existing models. BMW M-edition sales are up 2 percent this yea. AMG sales are down among pre-existing models. Add in the new SUVs, and the performance line is up about 60 percent to almost 16,000 vehicles this year, said Branden Cote, AMG manager for Mercedes-Benz U.S. What does a high-performance SUV look like? The AMG GLS63 is a seven-passenger, three-ton vehicle that comes with a 577-horsepower engine and starts at $124,000. It also comes with an Airmatic suspension that the driver can lower to the ground if he wants to zip in and out of a tight turn. That’s the kind of “sports car” that is fueling growth of Mercedes’s AMG line, Cote said. “Boomers are coming out of pure sports cars, but they’re not willing to sacrifice pure driving,” Cote said. “The idea of a sports SUV was incomprehensible 10 years ago. They’re not giving up spirited driving; they’re going to a different type of sporty driving.”)
