(FROM THE ARTICLE: Despite the din of partisan discord — much of it induced by the news media — Americans still say they’re patriotic on this Independence Day. Star-spangled sentiment lingers: 79 percent of the public would describe themselves as patriotic; 92 percent of Republicans and 80 percent of Democrats agree, along with 95 percent of those who voted for President Trump, and 78 percent of those who voted for Hillary Clinton. So says a wide-ranging Economist/YouGov poll conducted during the last week of June. The Republican Party has a little edge here. The poll found that while 46 percent of Americans overall say that both major political parties are “patriotic,” 33 percent cited the GOP and 21 percent the Democratic Party. But what constitutes patriotism? Sixty-nine percent of Americans overall said that someone could criticize Mr. Trump and still be considered patriotic; 61 percent of Republicans and 73 percent of Democrats agree with that. Another 68 percent also said that one could criticize former President Barack Obama and still be considered a patriot as well; 75 percent of Republicans and 65 percent of Democrats agree. The public is not so cordial toward people who burn the American flag or refuse to pay their taxes, however. Those acts are among those that garnered much less support as demonstrations of patriotism; just 21 percent would call a flag-burner patriotic. Those talks fell apart, and Democrats blamed Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, who had been shut out of the talks. “I believe it’s time for a new Senate Republican leader. I have done everything I can do to resolve the state’s budget crisis. I will continue to do so for the coming days,” Radogno said in a statement. “But if the solution will not come on my watch, I hope and pray that the governor, other legislative leaders, Democrats and Republicans in the Senate and House can find a path to solve the state’s problems. Radogno, 64, of southwest suburban Lemont, said she is leaving office “with a sense of sadness and some disappointment” but “with no regrets.” “I did my best — that’s all I could do. Even before her announcement, behind-the-scenes efforts to replace Radogno were being made by state Sen. Bill Brady of Bloomington, who served as her top deputy in the Senate GOP caucus, and by state Sen. Karen McConnaughay, the former Kane County Board chairwoman from St. Charles, legislative sources said. Talk of Radogno’s decision had begun spreading privately during the closing days of June in the aftermath of months of contentiousness with a Democratic legislative majority and a demanding Republican governor who has extensively used his personal wealth to command loyalty among GOP lawmakers. Radogno found her members’ loyalty to Rauner sometimes created problems with loyalty to her leadership, some GOP lawmakers said privately. That surfaced in attempts with Democrat Cullerton to negotiate an end to the state’s historic budget impasse known as the “grand bargain.” Rauner contended the so-called bargain did not go far enough and Democrats accused him of stripping away votes from a version of the package. Though Radogno has been in the General Assembly for 20 years, a decision to step down had been expected as the grind of legislative sessions, particularly serving in the minority, began to take its toll. Besides the political battles, Radogno also had some personal tragedies during her tenure, including the June 2014 death of her 31-year-old daughter, Lisa. In 2009, Radogno became the first woman to lead one of the four legislative caucuses. She succeeded Frank Watson of Downstate Greenville, who had suffered a stroke. Before running for the Senate, she was a La Grange trustee for seven years. Prior to that, she was a social worker at Mercy Center for Health Care Services. In their decision, appellate Justices Kathryn Zenoff and Joseph Birkett ruled Wojtasiak’s case was moot because all of the officials named in the complaint are out of office and the township’s 2016-17 fiscal year concluded March 31. But any Democrat familiar with the names in this section knows it’s not so easy. These battle-tested incumbents generally represent classic battleground districts, like the suburbs around Denver or Philadelphia. Yet they have consistently run far ahead of the national party’s performance in presidential elections. These seats would instantly be among the top Democratic targets in the country — if the Republican incumbents retired. As it is, none of these incumbents will be easy for Democrats to defeat. A few, like Frank LoBiondo of New Jersey, might escape without a competitive race at all. But most of these representatives will probably find themselves in highly competitive races. In a tough year for Republicans, several would probably lose. But many would probably survive, despite their district’s Democratic lean in presidential elections. Many of these representatives even survived the big Democratic waves in 2006 and 2008. If Washington’s Dave Reichert wins re-election, he will be the only Republican to have won in 2006 and 2008 in a district carried by Al Gore and John Kerry, and to win re-election in 2018 in a district carried by Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton.  Most have survived in part by amassing a moderate voting record to please their moderate constituents. True to form, six of them voted “no” on the Republican health care bill, including Mr. Reichert. The three who voted for the bill — Peter Roskam, Erik Paulsen and Rodney Frelinghuysen — might now find it harder to pitch themselves as moderate voices in Washington.)
