WASHINGTON POST
— ARTICLE TITLE IN THE DAILY HERALD: Ex-Clinton aides doubt reasons given for FBI director’s firing- Abby Phillip  (DIERSEN: Constructively, being forced to retire is the same as being fired.  QUESTION: What reasons did my Democrat GAO superiors have to fire me in 1997? ANSWER: Since 1988, I had been an active member in a class action lawsuit that charged GAO with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation.  I had always complained about patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation.  I was an old (49) non-veteran White male who had always been a conservative Republican. Employees in the office who were liberal, Democrat, minority, female, and/or younger talked and acted like they would leave GAO if GAO did not rid of its employees who were conservative, Republican, White, male, and/or older. Diersen could and would be used as an “example” to send a “message” to everyone a) that GAO gives tremendous preference to its employees who are liberal, Democrat, minority, female, younger, and/or veteran and b) that GAO does everything that it can to not hire and to get rid of its employees who are conservative, Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20170429/ISSUE01/170429842/how-regulators-nixed-inland-banks-risky-growth-play
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Regulators’ alarm at a rapid-fire, unorthodox loan-growth campaign at Inland Bank & Trust killed its most recent stab at a bank buyout, the lender now confirms. Oak Brook-based Inland, the $1 billion – asset bank owned by ultra-wealthy real estate mogul Dan Goodwin, wanted to bulk up fast in 2013 in order to go public so that Goodwin and other investors could cash out at least some of their shares. Without the personnel to generate enough loans to do that, the bank bought minority participations in business loans all over the country originated by outside banks. The result was immediate and eye-popping. Inland’s commercial and industrial loans grew 187 percent in a single year – 2014 – to $293 million from $102 million. Wanting to fund more such growth, Inland struck a deal in late 2014 to buy a Princeton, N.J.-based bank specializing in holding family savings for future college students while investing strictly in securities and making no loans. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. quickly approved the buyout in December 2014 but then took the highly unusual step of reversing itself and killing it five months later.)

http://hotair.com/archives/2017/04/29/marcus-certain-point-hasnt-obama-made-enough-money/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In collecting $400,000 from a Wall Street investment firm to make a single speech, Barack Obama is following in the Gucci-clad footsteps of past presidents. Ronald Reagan landed a $2 million speaking gig in Japan. George W. Bush, on his way out, announced it was time to “replenish the ol’ coffers.” Bill and Hillary Clinton reported making more than $235 million after leaving the White House. But to acknowledge that Obama has plenty of precedent on his side is not to say that his choice is wise. Indeed, it’s unfortunate. …  The Wall Street angle feels like unfortunate icing on an already distasteful cake. Would we really feel better if Obama were taking the money from, say, a public university? At least the Cantor Fitzgerald check comes from folks who can easily afford it — not out of taxpayer dollars.)

I started working for IRS in 1971.  I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980.  My Democrat GAO superiors succeeded in forcing me to retire in 1997.  My Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government and just about everyone else were furious that when I started working for IRS, a) all my unused sick leave that I had earned working for the Post Office was re-credited and b) the almost 3 years that I had worked for the Post Office part-time was credited as though I had worked full-time; that meant that soon after I started working for IRS, I began earning vacation days at the rate of 20 days a year.  Further, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government and just about everyone else were even more furious that when I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980, a) all my unused sick leave and all my unused annual leave that I had earned working for the Post Office and for IRS was transferred and b) I began earning vacation days at the rate of 26 days a year in 1983. Because the federal service credit that I had earned working for the Post Office and for IRS came with me when I transferred to GAO, I became eligible to take GAO’s $25,000 early retirement buyout offer in 1993 when I was 45 years old.  The aforesaid made my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government and just about everyone else even more furious.)

http://abc7chicago.com/news/trump-tower-among-chicagos-most-desirable-refugee-employers/1840201/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Refugees displaced by war, terrorism or persecution are moving to Chicago. One of the most desirable places for them to work? Trump Tower. Officially known as the Trump International Hotel and Tower, the 98-story skyscraper on Chicago’s riverfront has become so popular with refugees because they are paid up to $18.00 per hour for entry-level jobs. That’s according to a Chicago-based organization that helps refugees who are “fleeing war, terror and persecution.” Illinois is currently ranked 10th nationally in the number of refugees resettled, with 3,125 permitted residency here in 2016. Besides the Trump Tower, refugee aid officials told the I-Team that other Chicago-area employers popular with refugees are Tyson Foods, Five Star Laundry, Rivers Casino, Lettuce Entertain You and Eli’s Cheesecake. Since September 2015 the United States has admitted more than 117,000 refugees, including more than 1,000 since Trump became president on January 20. But the inflow took a hit under a Trump executive order signed in January that banned citizens from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the U.S. for 90 days. Last year according to state department data Muslims accounted for nearly half of all refugee admissions into the country. The Trump executive order will reduce the number of refugees annually admitted into the U.S. from 110,000 to a mere 50,000 people-the lowest ceiling in 35 years. It is currently estimated that more than 23 million refugees-half of them children-are fleeing war and repression around the world. Officials at the Trump Tower in Chicago have not responded to messages left by the I-Team. Eli’s Cheesecake officials said they currently employ 10 refugees and many other new immigrants. Others couldn’t put a number on their refugee work force.)

Nineteen people shut this nation down. Imagine what we in this room could do if we were as committed as they were,” Pfleger told an audience of movers-and-shakers including Mayor Rahm Emanuel during the Opportunity Youth Summit at the Chicago Cultural Center hosted by Thrive Chicago. “We have learned how to save the whales. http://www.theblaze.com/news/2017/03/14/youre-a-bigot-ex-nc-governor-says-bathroom-law-backlash-has-made-it-hard-to-find-a-job/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Former North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory, a Republican, says the backlash over his state’s so-called “bathroom law” has made it tough for him to find work since he left public office. The controversial “bathroom law,” or House Bill 2, requires individuals to use the restroom that correlates with their biological sex as it is written on their birth certificate. Following the law’s passage, McCrory, who supported the bill, was attacked as anti-LGBT and several performers and sports teams cancelled their events in the state. In an interview  last week with WORLD, McCrory said HB2 “has impacted me to this day, even after I left office. People are reluctant to hire me, because, ‘Oh my gosh, he’s a bigot’ — which is the last thing I am.” He told the Christian outlet that liberal groups opposing HB2 have damaged his reputation. “If you disagree with the politically correct thought police on this new definition of gender, you’re a bigot, you’re the worst of evil,” McCrory said. “It’s almost as if I broke a law.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Springfield- Dozens gathered on the steps of the Illinois State Capitol to show their support for President Donald Trump. “It’s time that America realizes that Trump is our president.” said Mel Cordani, a supporter. “I love him, and he is going to change America, and make it great again. I know that he has done so much already and I just wanted to be here to show him how much we love him.” said Doug Dukeman, another supporter. The crowd was filled with many local supporters, and three Illinois politicians came to show their support for President Trump. Senator Kyle McCarter (R)-Vandalia, Representative Reggie Phillips (R)-Charleston, and Representative Brad Halbrook (R)-Shelbyville, gave speeches to the crowd. “There is only 3 of us here, and it’s because it is important for us to know what we know is right. To support our president to let him know that Illinois is supporting our president, and they we need change in the state of Illinois.” said Rep. Reggie Phillips (R)-Charleston. Some of the attendees, like Shane Bouvet, know President Trump personally.. “He’s such a beautiful guy, and that’s what you see here in the crowd is beautiful. Who are patriotic, coming to support out president and show love for our country.” he said. “Donald  Trump is a president who loves all people. You see everyone who came out to support him and people who don’t support him, you know Donald Trump loves everyone. He cares about our country.” Many of Trump’s supporters spoke of his accomplishments since taking office in January. “He’s doing what he said he was going to do, and we want to be supportive of that effort for the first time, we actually have a president that is doing what he said he would do.” said Rep. Brad Halbrook, (R)-Shelbyville. “Mr. Trump has done more already in he short time than what others have done in eight years.” added Dukeman. For many of the supporters, they hope that President Trump will be able to help to fix the trouble that Illinois is in. “We need people to have respect and want to work again in Illinois and that is a federal issue, and I think Trump is going to start answering.” Said Rep. Phillips. This was just one of many March 4 Trump rallies happening nationwide.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/04/opinion/sunday/a-different-bargain-on-race.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: So, this week’s immodest proposal: Abolish racial preferences in college admissions, phase out preferences in government hiring and contracting, eliminate the disparate-impact standard in the private sector, and allow state-sanctioned discrimination only on the basis of socioeconomic status, if at all. Then at the same time, create a reparations program — the Frederick Douglass Fund, let’s call it — that pays out exclusively, directly and one time only to the proven descendants of American slaves. What would it pay out? Reparations advocates talk in trillions, which would take this already-unrealistic proposal into the realm of the utopian. But right now, giving every single African-American $10,000, perhaps in a specially-designed annuity, would cost about $370 billion, modest relative to supply-side tax plans and single-payer schemes alike. The wealth of the median black household in the United States was $11,200 as of 2013; a $10,000 per-person annuity would more than double it. In so doing it would hardly eliminate racial disadvantage, but then again neither has 50 years of affirmative action. What it would offer is a meaningful response to an extraordinary injustice, but a response that does not involve permanent discrimination. There is no clear or easy path to becoming a multiracial nation that isn’t divided politically by race. But reparations for the descendants of slaves today, rather than affirmative action for nonwhites forever, might be a better path than the one we’re on right now.)

http://www.sj-r.com/news/20170225/sanctuary-issue-draws-dueling-demonstrations-to-capitol
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A pending bill in the Illinois House that would create sanctuary zones for undocumented immigrants drew demonstrators from both sides of the issue to downtown Springfield Saturday. Rosanna Pulido of Springfield, founder of The Illinois Minuteman Project, organized a noon rally at the Abraham Lincoln statue at Second Street and Capitol Avenue. The rally was in opposition to HB 426, which would allow schools, medical treatment and health care facilities and places of worship deny access to state and local law enforcement officers who are enforcing immigration laws, unless the officers have a court-issued warrant. “It’s absolutely ridiculous,” Pulido said. “I think the biggest question we have for Governor Rauner and any legislator who would want to pass this bill is: Does making it easier for illegal aliens to stay in Illinois improve the lives of Illinois residents?” About five minutes into Pulido’s rally, which drew about 50 people, a group of about 30 people marched down Capitol Avenue chanting “No hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here.” The counter-protestors set up shop on the northeast corner of Second and Capitol near the Martin Luther King Jr. statue. The counter-protest was organized by the same people who did the Nov. 19 Springfield Stands United rally, and other local groups, said Valerie Liesenfelt of Springfield. The Springfield Stands United rally started out as a demonstration against then-President-Elect Donald Trump, but morphed into an anti-hate rally. Speaking Saturday, Liesenfelt said they don’t want to see children ripped away from their parents. “We aren’t going to tolerate people who want to close our borders from people who are trying to just seek a better life. That’s what America was founded on,” Liesenfelt said. Hot-button issue  The bill that got the two groups out in the 33-degree weather was introduced by state Rep. Emanuel Chris Welch, D-Hillside. His district includes west suburban Cook County. Welch wasn’t at the rallies but spoke about the legislation during a Friday telephone interview. “I think this is an important piece of legislation that sends a signal to the rest of the state and the rest of the country that Illinois is a safe place to live and we are a welcoming state,” Welch said. Welch said HB 426 is not a sanctuary city bill but was specifically written to create safe spaces. Those places are state-funded schools, nursing homes, health clinics, hospitals and churches. “People shouldn’t live in fear of deportation,” he said. “They should be able to go to school and receive an education without feeling like federal law enforcement officials are going to bust in and raid their classroom. They shouldn’t fear going to the hospital. That’s a place of treatment and recovery.” Welch said that after the November presidential election he got calls from school officials who said they had a lot of scared children in their classrooms. “The day after the election, teaching and learning did not go on in school,” Welch said. “Teachers spent the entire day counseling very distraught children who were crying and worried about being deported themselves and worried about whether or not they would go home and their parents wouldn’t be there.” State Rep. Allen Skillicorn, R-East Dundee, was at Pulido’s rally, which was billed as an “Illinois America First Rally.” His district is also in the Chicago area, and includes the communities of Crystal Lake and Elgin. Skillicorn has proposed a bill, HB 2942, to counter Welch’s. He disagreed with the assertion that children need to be protected from immigration officials while in school. “I haven’t heard of any children or school children having a risk of being deported or seized by (federal agents),” Skillicorn said. “People who are criminals or felons who don’t have legal status, those are the people committing the DUIs, who are committing the crimes. Those are the people we should really worry about.” Fiscal concerns A synopsis of HB 426 posted on the Illinois General Assembly’s website includes a fiscal note that the estimated cost of the bill is $5 million. Welch said the estimate is a one-time cost, and he believes the number is inflated. Skillicorn is opposed to spending state money on HB 426 and added he’s concerned about the potential loss of federal funds if state and local law enforcement do not cooperate with federal authorities. “Realistically, Illinois is broke,” Skillicorn said. “We need to save money everywhere we can. The idea of spending millions, if not billions of our federal matching dollars, is just something we can’t afford right now.” Pulido shares his concerns about the state’s fiscal condition. “We’re broke. We have the disabled not getting funds, we have schools getting their funding cut, seniors getting their funding cut, and now we’re going to talk about $5 million to help the illegal aliens to stay in Illinois. No,” Pulido said. The people in favor of sanctuary for undocumented immigrants chanted throughout Pulido’s rally. At one point, they chanted, “No ban, no wall, sanctuary for all.” Several of the people on Pulido’s side of the street, the ones opposed to sanctuary, waved American flags and occasionally chanted “USA, USA, USA.” Some of their signs said, “Illegals welcome is fake news” and “No sanctuary. Help our vets.” The two sides stayed on their respective sides of the street. There were no physical altercations between the two groups. Pulido’s rally wrapped up after about an hour, which is how long she expected the event to last. “I knew they would be here,” Pulido said of the counter-rally. “That’s fine. That’s what freedom is all about.”)

SEATTLE TIMES
— To federal-government workers: Persist!  My message to my former colleagues in the federal government is: Don’t go. Instead, speak truth to power. You are needed now more than ever. – Frederick J. Kaplan  (DIERSEN: I stayed and persisted against political affiliation discrimination, against reverse discrimination, against age discrimination, and against retaliation for almost 30 years.  For doing that, I paid the following price:  My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.  My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, they disallowed my education deductions, and they disallowed my partial day per diem claims.  My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests.)
http://www.seattletimes.com/opinion/to-federal-government-workers-persist/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: These are the worst of times for federal-government employees. Several of the political appointees in the Trump administration are hostile to the missions of the departments and agencies they now lead. On top of that, the president’s hiring freeze will create imbalances in the federal workforce, requiring current employees to fill in random gaps. Many civil servants will simply quit in disgust. I hope they don’t. When Ronald Reagan became president in 1981, I was an attorney in the Seattle office of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. In his first year in office, President Ronald Reagan proceeded to remake our small agency, bringing in new leadership that openly disdained the civil-rights community and its agenda. Some of us joked bitterly that we were becoming the U.S. Commission against Civil Rights. Funding for the commission was drastically reduced. Discouraged, much of the staff, myself included, found employment elsewhere. Abandoning ship in such circumstances is understandable, but in retrospect I think a mistake. When those civil servants with the strongest commitment to their agency’s mission leave, who remains? Answer: Those less committed and less likely to confront their political masters. Sure, the most earnest among those who quit the government will carry on their cause from the outside. But ultimately civil rights, environmental protection, enforcement of labor standards cannot be fully realized without governmental action, that is the action of dedicated and experienced civil servants.)

BELLEVILLE NEWS DEMOCRAT
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: BND wants to tax retirement income. (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, as inflation is far higher than COLAs, the purchasing power of my Civil Service Retirement System pension and Social Security is eroded.)
http://www.bnd.com/opinion/editorials/article133440444.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: And he said this: “we cannot tax people’s retirement incomes.”  We say this: “Why not?”  The feds tax retirement income. Illinois is one of only three states that do not. Instead of some lukewarm reforms and taxing everybody in the neighborhood of 5 percent, what about just closing the loophole that lets retirees escape paying state income taxes? That would put another $2 billion in state coffers and use retirement income to generate a partial fix for our $130 billion state pension deficit. Yes, we can hear the AARP screaming now about balancing the state budget on the backs of those with fixed incomes. True dat. But we could build in some protections for lower retirement incomes, say taxable after $35,000. Illinois has 350,000 people drawing pensions, and of that more than 14,000 are drawing public pensions of greater than $100,000 per year. How fair is it to ask the average Illinois family to pay an additional $745 in state income taxes when so many are paying zip? Letting retirement income escape state taxes is truly a loophole that lawmakers in 1983 giddily and popularly passed, sort of like the free bus rides for seniors regardless of income. Pain is coming in Illinois. Taxing retirees and selling the Thompson Center in Chicago are tiny splinters to be removed before amputations are necessary.)
