(FROM THE ARTICLE: Like previous violations of law by public officials in DuPage and other counties, instead of following the law, they simply get the law changed – which is their right to try and accomplish, but it sets a bad precedent for Illinois public officials – one that essentially breeds corruption by demonstrating that laws do not matter. Previous changes have been to pass a Bill concerning the election code, and backdate its effective date to allow extended times for publication of referendum. Another was to change the township code to authorize giving away mulch and delivering it onto private property. And changing the way drug funds must be utilized, after writing about a rogue State’s Attorney who chose to spend it outside what the current law allowed. If this is what we have come to in Illinois, someone should tell us exactly which laws are to be followed, and which ones can be safely ignored. Anything short of that, “Break the Law Change the Law” will become our State motto.)

The New York Times and The Washington Post are producing exceptional and indignant stories about the new administration. Subscriptions have surged. Cable news ratings are hitting record highs. And nonprofit outlets like Mother Jones and ProPublica have seen a major increase in donations. Times Editor Dean Baquet put it this way in late February: “There was a long time when the press wondered about its place in society. . . What’s happened in the last couple of months, I have to say, has been tremendous for news organizations. Our mission is clearer than it’s ever been.” I’m excited about the press’s reinvigoration, too, but I’m also worried about Trump’s anti-press words and deeds—and their trickle-down consequences for state and local journalists. I contacted 16 editors or publishers of state and local newspapers in California, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas to ask if their papers had seen post-election bumps in subscriptions or readership. (FROM THE ARTICLE: A former Evanston public works director Suzette Robinson is suing the city and several city officials for what the lawsuit alleges was “discrimination on the basis of race, harassment and [a] racially hostile work environment, and for retaliation.” However, Evanston’s city manager, who was named as one of the defendants in the suit, said Suzette Robinson’s race played no part in the decision to eliminate her job. “I deny Ms. Robinson’s claims in this lawsuit that race or retaliation had any role in my decision-making,” said Evanston City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz. In the complaint, filed May 27, 2016, in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Robinson asks for $75,000 in compensation, plus attorney’s fees and punitive damages. She names Bobkiewicz, the City of Evanston, city attorney W. Grant Farrar and human resources manager Jennifer Lin as defendants. According to the lawsuit, Robinson was public works director for Evanston from March 2010 until August 2015. The suit said that she was one of “three African-American employees at the department director level reporting directly to Bobkiewicz.” The complaint reads that Robinson’s position was eliminated, “effective immediately,” in August 2015 after Bobkiewicz stated “that the city planned to combine public works and utilities into one department named the public works agency.” But the lawsuit says the City Council did not approve the “proposed reorganization” until September 2015. Robinson alleges that Bobkiewicz “discriminated against her on the basis of race” and “retaliated against her” “for filing complaints about racial discrimination,” according to court documents.)

Fascists Get Out.” Close to 200 students kept up the noise for more than an hour in a University at Buffalo lecture hall on May 1, mostly drowning out the evening’s featured speaker, Robert Spencer, a conservative author and blogger who espouses a dark view of Islam. The event appeared to follow a familiar script, in which a large contingent of liberals muzzles a provocative speaker invited by a small conservative student club. But the propelling force behind the event — and a number of recent heat-seeking speeches on college campuses — was a national conservative group that is well funded, highly organized and on a mission, in its words, to “restore sanity at your school.” The group, the Young America’s Foundation, had paid Mr. Spencer’s $2,000 fee, trained the student leader who organized the event and provided literature for distribution. Other than the possibility of outside interference, little had been left to chance. The speeches are a part of the group’s mission of grooming future conservative leaders — Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Stephen Miller, a White House adviser, are among its alumni — and its long list of donors has included the television game show host Pat Sajak, the novelist Tom Clancy, the billionaire brothers David H. and Charles G. Koch, and the Amway billionaires Richard and Helen Devos, who gave $10 million to endow the Reagan Ranch near Santa Barbara, Calif., which the foundation runs as a preserve. (Their daughter-in-law, Betsy DeVos, the secretary of education, is not a donor, the group says.) Over the past two years, armed with a $16 million infusion from the estate of an orthodontist in California, Robert Ruhe, the organization has doubled its programming, including campus speeches. In 2016 that meant 111 speakers on 77 campuses. On the group’s website, it boasted of “dispatching” 31 speakers to colleges last month alone. In that time, the speakers have gotten edgier, more in-your-face and sometimes even meanspirited. Among them is Ann Coulter, whose canceled speech last month at the University of California, Berkeley, led the foundation, which was covering most of her $20,000 fee, to sue the college, arguing that it had violated the First Amendment in its failure to provide a suitable time and place for the event. The resulting clashes on university campuses, including protests and efforts to block speeches, have raised free speech questions. And at Berkeley, even liberals who oppose Ms. Coulter’s viewpoints said her speech should have been allowed to proceed. In the meantime, protesters have questioned whether such events are cynically intended to provoke reactions. “It’s part of a larger systematic and extremely well-funded effort to disrupt public universities and create tension among student groups on campus,” said Alexandra Prince, a doctoral student at Buffalo who circulated a petition to block Mr. Spencer.)

Ed Levato was township supervisor when the referendum was placed on the ballot after a successful petition drive organized by a group of residents. He said Monday that township staff members were simply misinformed when they told a Daily Herald reporter before the election that the ballot question was advisory. “They were not given any information about it,” he said. “It wasn’t our referendum. It was a citizens’ initiative.” Levato apologized for the miscommunication. He said he personally didn’t support the measure. “It’s a huge tax increase,” Levato said. According to preliminary estimates, owners of homes valued at $240,000 would pay about $56 a year in property taxes to support the mental health board. QUESTION: What reasons did my Democrat GAO superiors have to fire me in 1997? ANSWER: Since 1988, I had been an active member in a class action lawsuit that charged GAO with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation. I had always complained about patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation. I was an old (49) non-veteran White male who had always been a conservative Republican. Employees in the office who were liberal, Democrat, minority, female, and/or younger talked and acted like they would leave GAO if GAO did not rid of its employees who were conservative, Republican, White, male, and/or older. Diersen could and would be used as an “example” to send a “message” to everyone a) that GAO gives tremendous preference to its employees who are liberal, Democrat, minority, female, younger, and/or veteran and b) that GAO does everything that it can to not hire and to get rid of its employees who are conservative, Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)
