http://www.illinoishomepage.net/news/capitol-news/rauner-denies-alleged-ties-to-proft-papers/721247660
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Despite donating $2.5 million to Liberty Principles PAC, Governor Bruce Rauner denies he has any knowledge of a controversial, privately-funded newspaper organization run by the same political operative. Dan Proft is a conservative radio talk show host who runs the Liberty Principles super PAC. Proft also launched a private news publishing group, which is not required to disclose it’s donor or “investor” list. Last week, Democrats accused Proft’s ‘Local Government Information Services’ of spreading “fake news” in an alleged plot to sabotage the effort to alter the education funding formula. They claimed without providing any evidence that the erroneous, outdated information published in these papers was planted by the Rauner administration.)

— Bill introduced to change Public Officer Prohibited Activities Act after DuPage official outed – John Kraft  (DIERSEN: The GAO manager who took the lead in wasting my GAO career and in getting rid of me boasted that he got Congress to change a law because of me. I got full-time federal service credit while I worked only part-time for the Park Forest Post Office 1966-1969. Because he was so furious about that, he got Congress to change the law so that part-time federal work is now prorated. If I had not been grandfathered in, that law change would have cost me about 1 1/2 years of federal service credit.)
http://edgarcountywatchdogs.com/2017/05/bill-introduced-to-change-public-officer-prohibited-activities-act-after-dupage-official-outed/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Like previous violations of law by public officials in DuPage and other counties, instead of following the law, they simply get the law changed – which is their right to try and accomplish, but it sets a bad precedent for Illinois public officials – one that essentially breeds corruption by demonstrating that laws do not matter. Previous changes have been to pass a Bill concerning the election code, and backdate its effective date to allow extended times for publication of referendum. Another was to change the township code to authorize giving away mulch and delivering it onto private property. And changing the way drug funds must be utilized, after writing about a rogue State’s Attorney who chose to spend it outside what the current law allowed. If this is what we have come to in Illinois, someone should tell us exactly which laws are to be followed, and which ones can be safely ignored. Anything short of that, “Break the Law Change the Law” will become our State motto.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Approximately 100 local veterans of World War II and the Korean War got their due and the Honor Flight Chicago got its financial backing at the DuPage Veterans Foundation’s sixth annual fundraiser recently. Richard Jorgensen, the president of the foundation, told the DuPage Policy Journal that the event met its goals with flying colors. “We considered it to be a very successful event,” he said. “Our event is really two things: one, to honor World War I and Korea War-era veterans for their service, and second, it is a fundraiser to donate the money to Honor Flight Chicago. Those were the two goals of our event.” Jorgensen said the fundraiser drew more than 1,000 attendees, including Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Chicago radio talk show host Dan Proft. Proft is a principal of Local Government Information Services, which owns this publication. Jorgensen said he estimated the fundraiser garnered approximately $55,000 this year, adding to the more than $200,000 it has raised through past events.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2017/05/22/trump-hill-republicans-target-overly-generous-compensation-for-feds/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With President Trump targeting federal employees’ retirement programs and House Republicans taking aim at their compensation generally, Uncle Sam’s goal of being a model employer looks shaky. The administration’s fiscal 2018 budget proposal, scheduled for release Tuesday, includes a series of cuts to retirement programs, as The Washington Post reported last week. Then, amid a torrent of reports denoting Trump as unfit, unprepared and unbecoming, Republicans took time for a hearing to promote the notion that feds are overpaid. Together, the White House and congressional actions are a clear indication of Republican intent to extract savings at the expense of the workforce. At Thursday’s House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), chairman of the government operations subcommittee, complained “taxpayers are stuck paying for overly generous compensation” that “rewards tenure rather than performance.” Meadows, chairman of the right-wing House Freedom Caucus, always makes a point of praising “an incredibly dedicated federal workforce” and visiting their workplaces. That he is not a fed-basher demonstrates how pervasive his position is among Republicans who control Congress. With Republican Trump running the White House, Democrats are outnumbered in their attempt to protect workers from further incursions into their pocketbooks.)

https://www.cjr.org/local_news/trump-and-trickle-down-press-persecution.php
(FROM THE ARTICLE: IT’S BECOME CLEAR IN RECENT MONTHS that Donald Trump’s growling at the national press has, in many ways, backfired. The New York Times and The Washington Post are producing exceptional and indignant stories about the new administration. Subscriptions have surged. Cable news ratings are hitting record highs. And nonprofit outlets like Mother Jones and ProPublica have seen a major increase in donations. Times Editor Dean Baquet put it this way in late February: “There was a long time when the press wondered about its place in society. . . What’s happened in the last couple of months, I have to say, has been tremendous for news organizations. Our mission is clearer than it’s ever been.” I’m excited about the press’s reinvigoration, too, but I’m also worried about Trump’s anti-press words and deeds—and their trickle-down consequences for state and local journalists. I contacted 16 editors or publishers of state and local newspapers in California, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas to ask if their papers had seen post-election bumps in subscriptions or readership. Their circulations range from 8,000 to 200,000 daily. Seven responded, and only one reported growth. The others didn’t know why they hadn’t seen growth or said their local focus might be to blame. I don’t want to lean too heavily on these results, which are anecdotal. But they only add to my concern that Trump’s anti-press antics will inspire unprecedented attempts to delegitimize the state and local press.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/evanston/news/ct-evr-evanston-racial-discrimination-lawsuit-tl-0504-20170519-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A former Evanston public works director Suzette Robinson is suing the city and several city officials for what the lawsuit alleges was “discrimination on the basis of race, harassment and [a] racially hostile work environment, and for retaliation.” However, Evanston’s city manager, who was named as one of the defendants in the suit, said Suzette Robinson’s race played no part in the decision to eliminate her job. “I deny Ms. Robinson’s claims in this lawsuit that race or retaliation had any role in my decision-making,” said Evanston City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz. In the complaint, filed May 27, 2016, in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Robinson asks for $75,000 in compensation, plus attorney’s fees and punitive damages. She names Bobkiewicz, the City of Evanston, city attorney W. Grant Farrar and human resources manager Jennifer Lin as defendants. According to the lawsuit, Robinson was public works director for Evanston from March 2010 until August 2015. The suit said that she was one of “three African-American employees at the department director level reporting directly to Bobkiewicz.” The complaint reads that Robinson’s position was eliminated, “effective immediately,” in August 2015 after Bobkiewicz stated “that the city planned to combine public works and utilities into one department named the public works agency.” But the lawsuit says the City Council did not approve the “proposed reorganization” until September 2015. NEW YORK TIMES
— The Conservative Force Behind Speeches Roiling College Campuses – STEPHANIE SAUL  (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, schools crank out hate-filled “good little Democrats” who are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/20/us/college-conservative-speeches.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE:  “Let’s give it up for the racists that are hosting this event!” someone yelled, and the crowd roared, foot-stomping in unison, then breaking into song: Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.” One member of the audience held up a sign, “Queers Against Islamaphobia.” Another unfurled a banner: “Muslims Welcome. Fascists Get Out.” Close to 200 students kept up the noise for more than an hour in a University at Buffalo lecture hall on May 1, mostly drowning out the evening’s featured speaker, Robert Spencer, a conservative author and blogger who espouses a dark view of Islam. The event appeared to follow a familiar script, in which a large contingent of liberals muzzles a provocative speaker invited by a small conservative student club. But the propelling force behind the event — and a number of recent heat-seeking speeches on college campuses — was a national conservative group that is well funded, highly organized and on a mission, in its words, to “restore sanity at your school.” The group, the Young America’s Foundation, had paid Mr. Spencer’s $2,000 fee, trained the student leader who organized the event and provided literature for distribution. Other than the possibility of outside interference, little had been left to chance. The speeches are a part of the group’s mission of grooming future conservative leaders — Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Stephen Miller, a White House adviser, are among its alumni — and its long list of donors has included the television game show host Pat Sajak, the novelist Tom Clancy, the billionaire brothers David H. and Charles G. Koch, and the Amway billionaires Richard and Helen Devos, who gave $10 million to endow the Reagan Ranch near Santa Barbara, Calif., which the foundation runs as a preserve. (Their daughter-in-law, Betsy DeVos, the secretary of education, is not a donor, the group says.) Over the past two years, armed with a $16 million infusion from the estate of an orthodontist in California, Robert Ruhe, the organization has doubled its programming, including campus speeches. In 2016 that meant 111 speakers on 77 campuses. On the group’s website, it boasted of “dispatching” 31 speakers to colleges last month alone. In that time, the speakers have gotten edgier, more in-your-face and sometimes even meanspirited. Among them is Ann Coulter, whose canceled speech last month at the University of California, Berkeley, led the foundation, which was covering most of her $20,000 fee, to sue the college, arguing that it had violated the First Amendment in its failure to provide a suitable time and place for the event. The resulting clashes on university campuses, including protests and efforts to block speeches, have raised free speech questions. And at Berkeley, even liberals who oppose Ms. Coulter’s viewpoints said her speech should have been allowed to proceed. In the meantime, protesters have questioned whether such events are cynically intended to provoke reactions. “It’s part of a larger systematic and extremely well-funded effort to disrupt public universities and create tension among student groups on campus,” said Alexandra Prince, a doctoral student at Buffalo who circulated a petition to block Mr. Spencer.)

http://www.govexec.com/pay-benefits/2017/05/trumps-2018-budget-reportedly-targets-federal-retirement-programs/138014/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The proposed cuts to retirement benefits sparked swift condemnation by Democrats and groups representing federal workers and retirees. Richard Thissen, national president of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, called the proposal an “egregious attack on federal service and seniors” and “unconscionable.”  “The president purports to defend government annuities like Social Security and then proposes to eliminate cost-of-living adjustments for some and limit COLAs for those already retired and living on fixed incomes,” Thissen said. “It is beyond insulting. It is downright mean. Simultaneously promoting tax cuts and forcing a tax on just federal employees, through an increase in retirement contributions, is the height of hypocrisy.” J. David Cox, national president of the American Federation of Government Employees blasted the plan as something that “defies reason.” “The American people knows what’s fair, and raiding the already-modest retirement benefits of the people who inspect our food and lock up dangerous criminals is beyond the pale,” Cox said. “These proposals portray an astounding misplacement of priorities that the American public should not soon forget.” And Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., said cuts to federal retirement benefits will hurt the government’s ability to attract workers capable of fulfilling the missions of various federal agencies. “The biggest losers from President Trump’s draconian cuts to federal employee pay and benefits will be the American people who count on dedicated federal employees to care for our veterans, maintain our national parks, and process Social Security checks each and every day,” Connolly said. “Cuts of this magnitude will make it impossible to recruit and retain the qualified workforce we need to meet our nation’s challenges.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Voters approved a ballot question that makes the township establish a board devoted to improving the availability and quality of services for township residents with mental illness, addiction, and developmental disabilities. Ed Levato was township supervisor when the referendum was placed on the ballot after a successful petition drive organized by a group of residents. He said Monday that township staff members were simply misinformed when they told a Daily Herald reporter before the election that the ballot question was advisory. “They were not given any information about it,” he said. “It wasn’t our referendum. It was a citizens’ initiative.” Levato apologized for the miscommunication. He said he personally didn’t support the measure. “It’s a huge tax increase,” Levato said. According to preliminary estimates, owners of homes valued at $240,000 would pay about $56 a year in property taxes to support the mental health board. The tax is expected to be collected for the first time next year. However, Michael Murray, chairman of the committee that backed the referendum, said their campaign made it clear to residents that some type of tax increase would be necessary to fund the mental health board. The panel will use the money to award grants to agencies that provide detection, early diagnosis, education, assistance and treatment programs.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: I always have a simple answer for people who ask questions like: Why would a guy with $3.4 billion care about saving a few hundred grand on his property taxes? My reply: It’s America, man. Nothing’s ever enough here. It looks like he bought the house next door to establish a buffer. He remodeled the outside so it looked nice, but apparently let the inside go to pot. (The appraiser was let inside that house, but not into Pritzker’s actual residence, which also got a reduction, over security concerns.) Then apparently he got tired of paying taxes on a house that wasn’t worth nearly as much as its appraised value.)

WASHINGTON POST
— ARTICLE TITLE IN THE DAILY HERALD: Ex-Clinton aides doubt reasons given for FBI director’s firing- Abby Phillip  (DIERSEN: Constructively, being forced to retire is the same as being fired.  QUESTION: What reasons did my Democrat GAO superiors have to fire me in 1997? ANSWER: Since 1988, I had been an active member in a class action lawsuit that charged GAO with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation.  I had always complained about patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation.  I was an old (49) non-veteran White male who had always been a conservative Republican. Employees in the office who were liberal, Democrat, minority, female, and/or younger talked and acted like they would leave GAO if GAO did not rid of its employees who were conservative, Republican, White, male, and/or older. Diersen could and would be used as an “example” to send a “message” to everyone a) that GAO gives tremendous preference to its employees who are liberal, Democrat, minority, female, younger, and/or veteran and b) that GAO does everything that it can to not hire and to get rid of its employees who are conservative, Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)
