COLLEGE FIX
— Black student rejects victimhood status: ‘I am going to break stereotypes’ – WILLIAM NARDI (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, Democrats and RINOs shout at minorities, at women, at younger people, at veterans, and at everyone else that Republicans have caused, are causing, and will forever cause all the problems that minorities, women, younger people, veterans, and everyone else has had, are having, and will have.)
http://www.thecollegefix.com/post/29344/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As a young, black woman, life on campus is not always easy for Roger Williams University freshman Kalasia Richer. But her hardships are not the result of slavery from years past – as her professors and peers like to insist – but instead from the current political persecution she says she faces for being a conservative on a liberal college campus. “I have been told since day one that I would not succeed without the demeaning benefits of affirmative action,” says Richer, 18. “One of my professors actually told me that it’s offensive to say that everyone can achieve the American dream.” Statements like these are common among the liberal academia, who teach that “systemic oppression” and “institutionalized racism” are the most significant factors of whether or not one will achieve success in life. But because Richer doesn’t but into it, she’s mocked and ridiculed and blackballed. “One of my classes is entirely structured around the so-called belief in ‘white privilege,’” she told The College Fix, referring to a humanities elective. “Professors shame white students from speaking up against it, and whenever I do they look at me like I’m a traitor.” According to Richer, a political science major, such classes victimize women of color and force other students to justify their current “oppression.” In an attempt to balance the political climate of her campus, Richer took a position as the secretary of a proposed chapter of the conservative Young Americans for Freedom group. But late last month, student government leaders refused to allow the club to officially be recognized on campus, accusing it of being too similar to the College Republicans. “I was disgusted by the hostility I felt for daring to give a voice to conservatives on campus,” she says. “College is advertised as a place for your mind to grow, but I didn’t realize how much of a lie it was until I saw firsthand how these ‘student leaders’ attempt to dictate how students think on campus.”)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Seth Lewis
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENORSEMENT: 23rd District: The remap of legislative districts in Democrats’ favor helped nudge Sen. Tom Cullerton, former Villa Park mayor and a cousin of Senate President John Cullerton, into this seat in 2012. Cullerton has done some things we like. He was lead sponsor of a bill blocked by Republicans to get rid of the unnecessary lieutenant governor’s office. But he doesn’t wander far off his party’s script and should have voted against a budget this spring that was $7 billion out of balance. He voted “present.” Our nod goes to Republican Seth Lewis, an insurance agent from Bartlett, who as a Bartlett Fire Protection District trustee hasn’t been afraid to vote against more spending. He also isn’t afraid to speak against generous pension packages that taxpayers subsidize — including that of his wife, who is a school superintendent. Ouch. We wouldn’t want to be at the dinner table for that discussion.)
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Dan McConchie
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: 26th District: This northwest suburban seat opened in April when incumbent Dan Duffy resigned early. Local GOP leaders rallied to Dan McConchie of Hawthorn Woods, who won the March Republican primary. McConchie didn’t get our endorsement in that race, but he’s getting it this time. He has shown a willingness to work across the aisle and dig into policy, including school funding reform and anti-sex trafficking efforts. His opponent, Democrat Kelly Mazeski of Barrington, is an impressive candidate who has been involved in her local government. She characterizes McConchie as “a one-issue” lobbyist who is too socially conservative for the district. We’re not convinced. McConchie left his job with an anti-abortion organization and has shown he is not a one-issue legislator. Let’s give him a chance. McConchie is endorsed.)
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Mel Thillens
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: 28th District: We like Sen. Laura Murphy, D-Des Plaines, because she is direct and outspoken. As a former member of the Des Plaines City Council, she advocated canceling a contract with a group opposing O’Hare airport expansion because taxpayers weren’t getting enough for their money. But so far in Springfield, she has stuck to the Democratic playbook, including voting for piecemeal budget bills that expanded government programs but had no real funding attached to them. She also supported a bill at the behest of the state’s largest employee union that was anti-taxpayer. This is a race where taxpayers could say “Enough!” with the budget games. We’re endorsing Republican Mel Thillens of Park Ridge, whose view of government’s role is less, less and less.)
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Michael Amrozowicz
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: 31st District: Let’s get one thing out the way: Republican candidate Michael Amrozowicz’s name is pronounced “Am-RO-zo-wits.” The Gurnee resident and former Lake County Republican Party chairman is running against incumbent Sen. Melinda Bush, D-Grayslake, who was elected in 2012 and buoyed by a new, favorable district map. Bush voted against most versions of pension reform and supported a union-backed bill that most editorial boards from Rockford to Carbondale criticized as irresponsible and anti-taxpayer. The state is broke. Taxpayers are tired of shouldering all the promises. Amrozowicz would bring more fiscal sanity to the Senate. He is endorsed.)
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Pamela Althoff
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: 32nd District: Sen. Pamela Althoff, R-McHenry, is running for a two-year term and says if re-elected, it will be her last: “I believe in term limits.” Appointed to the seat in 2003, she has represented the northwest suburbs ever since. She has been successful at passing legislation because she lobbies her colleagues on both sides of the aisle and in both chambers. She knows Democrat staff just as well as Republican staff. Not many legislators can say that. We disagreed with her handling of a government consolidation bill this spring — she watered it down — but she still got the bill passed and signed into law. Althoff is endorsed over Democrat Melissa Coyne, a small business owner and community activist from Fox Lake.)
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Sue Rezin
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: 38th District: A rematch is underway between Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and Christine Benson, D-Ottawa. Benson lost to Rezin 46 percent to 54 percent when they faced off in 2012. Benson retired that year as superintendent of Streator Elementary School District 44, which has been struggling with a budget deficit due in part to the state’s inability to make full school payments. But Streator-area voters signaled they are taxed out. They rejected a school referendum to raise property taxes. Rezin would be a stronger advocate for those tax-weary residents. She is a consistent advocate for government consolidation and financial stability. We doubt Benson, who retired with a generous pension and is backed by organized labor, would be as prudent. With Democrats holding their 39-20 advantage over Republicans in the Senate, taxpayers can’t afford to lose another seat. Rezin is endorsed.)
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Michelle Smith
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: 49th District: In this southwest suburban district, Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, is facing Michelle Smith, R-Plainfield, who is the board president in Plainfield School District 202. On the school board, Smith has tried to keep the property tax levy steady while dealing with unpredictability from the state. “Attempting to build a budget every year is like throwing darts blindfolded,” Smith says. Incumbent Bertino-Tarrant should understand the pressure the state’s financial chaos creates in her district — yet she couldn’t bring herself to vote against House Speaker Michael Madigan’s budget, which was $7 billion out of balance. She voted “present.” Votes like that are the reason the state’s finances are a disaster. Smith is strongly endorsed.)
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Paul Schimpf
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: 58th District: We know both Republican Paul Schimpf of Waterloo and Democrat Sheila Simon of Carbondale to be dedicated public servants. Schimpf served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was an adviser to Iraqi prosecutors during the trial of Saddam Hussein. Simon was lieutenant governor under Pat Quinn. But here’s a case where voters in Southern Illinois can demand change. The economy in this part of the state is desperate for revitalization. Democratic policies have not worked. Schimpf supports workers’ comp changes to make Illinois more business-friendly. He also supports tort reform and term limits. Schimpf is endorsed.)
— Illinois Senate endorsement: Dale Fowler
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-illinois-senate-endorsements-madigan-rauner-cullerton-edit-20161003-story.html
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: 59th District: It’s strange that Sen. Gary Forby, D-Benton, claims to be a fiscal steward, often proclaiming that the state should retire its massive pile of unpaid bills. Then he voted in May for House Speaker Michael Madigan’s spending plan, which everyone knew was $7 billion short. He didn’t have to vote for it. Most Democratic senators did not. Remember that, voters of this district, when you show up to cast a ballot on Nov. 8. A better choice is Dale Fowler, mayor of Harrisburg, who knows what “reckless spending” actually means. Fowler is endorsed.)
— FROM THE ARTICLE: 22nd District: Tracy Smodilla of Bartlett, didn’t run in the primary but managed to ward off a Democratic challenge as a last-minute slated Republican. She’s smart, outspoken and fiscally conservative. She is not afraid to stand up to, well, anyone. She successfully fought an unnecessary tax increment financing district in her hometown. We hope to see her name on future ballots.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/ct-nvs-dupage-county-early-voting-st-1002-20160930-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Early voting  Early voting started Thursday in the DuPage County, and has already drawn hundreds of residents eager to cast ballots in a presidential election expected to draw 80 percent of the county’s registered voters. “Early voting has started! We can vote for Hillary today! Then we’ll get a glass of wine,” said Maureen Quirk, of Wheaton, who joined co-worker Debbie Szydlo, of Carol Stream, at the Wheaton-based election commission office Friday afternoon to make official their votes for the Democratic presidential candidate. “She needs suburban white women. Well, here we are,” Quirk said. About 160 voters Thursday and nearly 200 Friday filled out ballots to vote for president, U.S. Senate, DuPage County offices and other races at the 421 N. County Farm Road office, said Joseph Sobecki, assistant executive director of the DuPage County Election Commission. The site is the first early polling place in DuPage County. Nearly a dozen more are scheduled to open around the county Oct. 24 and will operate through Nov. 7. Election Day is Nov. 8. The crowd Friday wasn’t exclusively made up of Democrats or Clinton supporters. Voters Bob and Carole Rutan, both 74, of Wheaton, said they are registered Republicans although they declined to name their candidate of choice. “I don’t like either one of them that much,” Carole Rutan said. The couple said they wanted to vote before heading to Florida later in October. Sobecki said he and his staff are preparing for record voter turnout — expected to be as high as 80 percent — in this year’s general election. The spring primary election drew a record number of DuPage County voters, with nearly 290,000 ballots cast. “It was the highest total number we’ve had since we recorded primaries,” Sobecki said. “We expect that trend to continue for the general election.”)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/bolingbrook-plainfield/news/ct-nvs-trump-bolingbrook-st-0929-20160928-story.html
(FROM AN EARLIER VERSION OF THE ARTICLE: David John Diersen, editor for gopillinois.com, said Rudy Giuliani made a surprise appearance.  He said Trump made many jokes and his winning Illinois is “in the realm of possibilities.” Attendee Joshua Naponiello, who’s a volunteer with the DuPage County GOP, said Trump gave a speech with talking points that included reducing regulation, reducing taxes for businesses and the middle class and repealing Obamacare. He said one of Trump’s guests included a representative of the Pakistani Islamic community and an Islamic prayer was given and everyone prayed along. Some of Trump’s supporters also showed up early, including Garry Slabaugh of Romeoville. He said he is excited the candidate he supported since the beginning of the primaries was virtually in his backyard. “I heard about (the fundraiser) last night, and I could hardly sleep,” Slabaugh said. “My wife wishes she was off today so she could be here.” He said he and his wife attended the Trump rally at UIC on March 11 that was canceled amid security concerns. “People were pounding our van and called us racist and they didn’t even know us,” Slabaugh said. “I hope it’s not like that today.” He said he’s not a racist and supports Trump because “he’s tells the truth.” “I don’t like the way things are going,” Slabaugh said. “I don’t want more of the same.” Police staged all demonstrators, supporters and media in a field across the street from the clubhouse not allowing anyone uninvited into the private event in which donors paid up to $250,000.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Trump pumps up the room in Bolingbrook fundraiser – Michael Sneed
http://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/sneed-trump-pumps-up-the-room-in-bolingbrook-fundraiser/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hey! Hey!  It was a Trump love fest. Pull up a luncheon chair. Donald Trump, who has dinged Chicago for our murder rate, denounced the Cubs last year for being poorly run by owners who opposed his campaign, and expressed concern for the Chicago Bears going forward — was all banter, burble and bubble at a private luncheon in Bolingbrook on Wednesday. “I love Chicago. I am an investor here. It’s a great city,” chirped Trump, who left the Bolingbrook Golf Club fund-raiser organized by savvy Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar with $1.5 million bucks in his political pocket. “It was a huge blowout,” a luncheon source said. Trump, who took no questions from the 350 plus donors dining on cold salmon salad and Claar’s favorite yellow pudding, played it mellow while pitching podium bon mots to the audience in the Ronald Reagan room. Todd Ricketts, a co-owner of the Cubs who is CEO of the conservative Ending Spending Super PAC, was in attendance. In a shout-out to Ricketts, Trump yelled: “I want to commend the Ricketts family on their business plan and how they rebuilt the Chicago Cubs in a few short years!”  Ricketts shouted back:” It’s gonna be a great year because YOU are going to win the presidency AND THE CUBS ARE GOING TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES!”  (Trump’s praise for the Cubs followed disclosures Wednesday morning Joe Ricketts was doing a turnaround, endorsing Trump and donating $1 million to elect him.) The room erupted into applause. Trump was now on a roll. Tossing a huge shoutout to retired Hall of Fame football defensive tackle Dan Hampton, whom he mistakenly called “Dave,” Trump praised Hampton and asked him to join him on stage. “My daughter Ivanka always reminds me I am a BIG guy,” said Trump, who reportedly weighs 267 pounds. “So I just want to show my children there are guys bigger than me. And I want you to tell coach [Mike] Ditka how much I love the guy and appreciate his support and friendship.”  Then Trump told Hampton he “wished you’d suit up because the Bears need you.”  Trump also volunteered to lend Hampton his knees. “I have great knees and if you want to borrow them. I’d be more than happy to do so,” Trump said. Trump then gave a big shout-out to WeatherTech CEO David MacNeil, commending him for manufacturing his product in America. MacNeil shouted back: “And I employ 1,100 people here in Bolingbrook.” Trump, however, saved the knife for Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, who has refused to endorse Trump. The source claimed Trump stated: “It is one thing not to endorse me, but it another thing to use me in ads for yourself against me. Guys like Kirk who are behind in the polls can’t figure out why guys like me are ahead in the polls.” Trump, who told the crowd his campaign raised $18 million since his televised debate two days ago, singled Kirk out several times for disdain, the source added. Trump also praised Claar, who organized the event. Overseeing a diverse community, Claar’s event had a Muslim deliver the invocation, an African-American as master of ceremonies, and an African-American woman sing the national anthem, according to the source.)

  1. LOUIS TODAY
    — Do whites and men have too much power? – Scott Clement and Emily Guskin  (DIERSEN: How much power do you have?  Power is religious, government, political, and/or financial clout.)
    http://www.stltoday.com/news/national/govt-and-politics/do-whites-and-men-have-too-much-power/article_a343bfc0-b572-5f66-90f1-215d5820e7dc.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s no secret that race and gender issues have been front-and-center in this year’s presidential contest, and a new Washington Post-ABC News poll shines a new light on a central part of this dynamic: views of the power of whites and men. White men fueled Trump’s overall support in the poll, with likely voters in this demographic favoring him by a whopping 40-point margin, compared with a nearly tied contest among white women (46-44) and Clinton’s 50-point lead among all non-white voters (69-19). The Post-ABC poll also asked whether men, women, whites and racial and ethnic minorities have “too much,” “too little” or “about the right amount” of influence in the country. Just more than four in 10 registered voters say each of women and minorities have too little influence, while far fewer say either has too much sway. Looking at whites and men, nearly four in 10 voters say men have too much influence in the country, while one-third says the same about whites. Putting those questions together, voters split evenly, with 48 percent saying whites or men have too much influence, while 48 percent say neither group does. The Post-ABC poll found responses to this question are closely connected with support for Clinton and Trump. Trump’s support is 36 points higher among voters who say whites have “about the right amount” or “too little” influence in America, compared with those who say whites have too much influence (53 percent to 17 percent). Trump’s support is also 27 percentage points higher among voters who reject the idea that men have “too much” influence, compared with those who do. Put together, Trump leads Clinton by a 57-28 margin among voters who say neither whites nor men have too much influence, while he trails Clinton by 52 points among voters who say both whites and men have too much influence (14-66). Fascinatingly, the impact of these attitudes is largest among voters who belong to the two historically advantaged demographics. Whites voters who say their racial group has too much influence prefer Clinton by a 38-point margin over Trump (61-23), while those who say their influence is about right or insufficient favor Trump by a 40-point margin (63-23). Likewise, male voters who say men are too influential favor Clinton by 25 points (52-27) while those who feel men are not too powerful prefer Trump by a 44-point margin (59-25). Political divisions over gender and race are far from new, and the poll also finds big partisan splits on these questions – an indication that they predate Clinton and Trump’s candidacies. Democrats are about twice as likely to say men have too much influence as Republicans and three times as likely to say whites have too much sway. But it is also likely that heated rhetoric over police shootings of black men, racism, sexism and immigration have helped solidify partisan divisions on issues of race and gender.)
