The opinions that I express in GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails are based on experience that I have gained doing many things since 1948. I base my opinions on what I learned a) working for the federal government for almost 30 years -- Post Office 1966-1969, IRS 1971-1980, and GAO 1980-1997, serving on the Executive Committee of the Association of Government Accountants Chicago Chapter 1983-1996, and being a union member while I worked for the Post Office and IRS; b) earning an MBA from Loyola in 1976, a masters degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, and a masters degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997; c) passing the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979 and passing the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981; c) serving as a Republican Precinct Committeeman since 1999, the GOPUSA Illinois Editor since 2000, the TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois Chairman 2005-2012, a member of the 2008 Illinois Republican Party (IRP) Platform and Resolutions Committee, a Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member 2003-2011, the Milton Township Republican Central Committee webmaster 2008-2010 and 2000-2004, an Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member 2003-2007, and an American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member 2001-2004; d) attending the 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016 IRP State Conventions as a delegate; e) being the subject of a nasty 4-page article in the February 1978 issue of Money Magazine; f) pursing litigation including Diersen v. GAO and Diersen v. Chicago Car Exchange; g) being married since 1978; h) living in Crete 1948-1972, in University Park 1972-1976, in Chicago 1976-1978, and in DuPage County, Milton Township, and Wheaton since 1978; and i) being baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran.

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A new DuPage County auditor took office Tuesday for the first time in 12 years, but his election opponent says the historically close race isn’t over yet. Downers Grove Democrat William “Bill” White assumed the role as the county’s top financial watchdog even as his predecessor, Bob Grogan, prepares for “double overtime” in one of the tightest contests in the suburbs. Grogan has asked for a partial recount of the election results after coming up just 75 votes shy of victory out of more than 466,000 ballots cast. Grogan, a Downers Grove Republican who held the position for three terms, filed for a discovery recount in up to 25% of the precincts countywide. Wheaton Republican Tim Whelan also has requested a partial recount after falling short in his reelection bid for a seat on the forest preserve district board. Official results from last month’s election show Democratic challenger Jeff Gahris defeating Whelan by 718 votes. The recount proceedings are set to begin at 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, in the county administration building in Wheaton. Both Grogan and Whelan are represented by attorney Phillip Luetkehans. The exploratory process leaves some uncertainty over races that add to historic gains for Democrats in DuPage. In a partial recount, the county clerk’s office will make election materials available for scrutiny to help candidates determine if there are enough voter discrepancies to seek a court order for a complete recount. Pat Bond, the attorney for the county clerk’s office, said county election officials have had roughly 30 discovery recounts over the past 20 years, but none resulted in a full recount. Election authorities anticipate the partial recounts could be done by Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the earliest, Bond said. Grogan already has put out an appeal for donations if he should decide to forge ahead with a legal challenge. “I have confidence that assuming that we find a critical mass of differences that we’ll be able to fund the full recount if we can get there past the judge,” Grogan said. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Dion McNeal was the county’s communications specialist and one of the most public voices in its initial COVID-19 response last spring. McNeal, who is Black, was involved in a dispute over a county press release and social media post in June—just after the killing of George Floyd—that linked the trauma of racism and police brutality with public health. McNeal says that put him at odds with some county officials. He then went to the media with his concerns, in which he pointed to a lack of Black leadership in the county’s health department. He says he was fired a few days later. . .So on June 10, McNeal sent out the original version of the press release. The next day, McNeal was told he would have multiple job duties removed, according to the lawsuit. McNeal says he faced “severe adverse employment actions,” in contrast with a white co-worker who also sent a letter to the media June 19 raising concerns about the lack of diversity in the health department. That white co-worker was treated more favorably, the lawsuit claims. McNeal also claims sex discrimination. McNeal has identified himself as a “proud healthy Black queer HIV positive man.” “Similarly situated female employees … did not suffer the same adverse employment action McNeal did and, therefore, were treated more favorably,” his lawsuit reads. McNeal’s accusation of unlawful retaliation is based on how the county and health department reacted to him going public in his June 19 statement. McNeal claims he was “speaking as a public citizen on a matter of public concern and was engaged in activity protected by First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.” “McNeal suffered several adverse actions and deprivations likely to deter his protected activity, including without limitation, increased job scrutiny, placement on administrative leave, placement on a performance improvement plan, and termination of employment,” the lawsuit reads. “McNeal’s legally protected activity was at least a motivating factor in the defendants’ decision to impose the deprivations.”)

In his victory speech, the president-elect said, “I sought this office to restore the soul of America. To rebuild the backbone of the nation — the middle class.” Biden’s middle-class vision for the US is possible, but without aggressive investments in education, healthcare, and well-paying jobs, America’s future may well look more like post-apartheid South Africa than the highly developed country it purports to be. How do I know? I followed the money. The United States is in the midst of a massive demographic shift. Since its inception in 1776, the country has been composed of largely white inhabitants with ancestral ties to Northern Europe. Through its first 200 years, the demographic predominance of Anglo-Americans was maintained by encouraging steady waves of European immigration alongside policies that facilitated ethnic cleansing, genocide, and the marginalization of minorities from the social, political, and economic spheres of the middle class. The Civil Rights movement legally ended the most aggressive legal barriers to social mobility for minorities. However, civil rights legislation did little to redistribute the massive wealth disparities between white Americans and everyone else. And without policy intervention, racial inequalities may be on the verge of getting much worse due to the nation’s shifting demographics. A New Dawn? The US is quickly becoming a minority-majority nation. In 1990, 76 percent of the population identified as non-Hispanic white, but by 2018, that number had dropped to 60 percent. And in urban cities, where most young people live, only 44 percent of inhabitants identify as non-Hispanic white. The nation’s demographic shift may signal a new dawn. As white Americans age and pass away, we should expect minority populations to become more involved in politics, middle-class professions, and political decision making. To be certain, the diversity of representation in US Congress — highlighted by representatives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Cori Bush — reflects the country’s shifting demographics. Still, demographic dominance does not necessarily equate to more equality. For example, in the world’s most unequal country, South Africa, white citizens account for just 9 percent of the population but control nearly 70 percent of the wealth, including 72 percent of the country’s land. In the US, the vast majority of wealth is also concentrated in the hands of white people. And in coming decades, barring policies designed to redistribute wealth, the situation stands to get much worse as aging white Americans begin leaving their estates to fewer and fewer heirs. According to the US Federal Reserve, 30 percent of white families report an inheritance or gift, compared to just 10 percent of Black families, 7 percent of Hispanic families, and 18 percent of other families. White families also receive substantially larger inheritances and are much more likely to receive financial support from other family members in the case of an emergency. Given these trends, in a country where wealth and power go hand in hand, a more diverse society may also come with a much greater concentration of financial authority in the hands of fewer and fewer white Americans. America’s Racial Wealth Gap In the US, the racial wealth divide has grown in recent decades. As of 2016, on average, white households held nearly $147,000 in wealth compared to just $6,591 for Latinos and $3,557 for African Americans. And over 33 percent of Black and Latino families have zero or negative net worth. This situation has grown even worse under the pandemic, as minorities have experienced far more job loss than white Americans. The massive wealth gap between white Americans and minorities was fueled by the mid-20th century’s redistributive politics, which predominantly benefited white families. In the 1940s, beneath the progressive policy foundation set by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, the US launched what would become the most prosperous period in the nation’s young history. Americans coming back from WWII went to school, bought cars and homes, and benefitted widely from government-funded programs designed to lift the working masses into the middle class. For the next 30 years, white Americans experienced growth in education, income, and wealth in a way that few groups ever have in world history. But due to systemic discrimination and racism, minorities were largely left out of this growth, and as a result, the racial wealth gap mushroomed. But today’s racial wealth gap may well pale compared to the economic fissures of the future. Today, white Americans are aging quickly. In fact, the most common non-Hispanic white American is now 58 years old, compared to just 11 for Latinos and 27 for African Americans. With far fewer children than their parents, white Americans are passing their accumulated wealth on to fewer and fewer heirs. As a result, wealth in the US is quickly becoming more and more concentrated in the hands of less and less white Americans. Dangerous Path The growth of racial inequality, coupled with a wave of conservative renewal, has set the United States on a dangerous and regressive path that threatens our nation’s democratic norms and values. Few events are as reflective of this point as the tumultuous and extremely divisive 2020 presidential election. So where do we go from here? The only way to avoid transforming into a plutocracy defined by hyper-racial inequality — à la South Africa — is to invest in the social mobility of minorities now. To do this, we must progressively raise taxes on the wealthy and immediately invest in public education, healthcare, and living wages for all Americans. The election of Joe Biden provides an opportunity to move in this direction. However, if the president-elect fails to significantly address wealth inequality over the next 4 years, democratic governance as we know it in the US may well collapse.)

None of that matters. The big money, media, and government are solidly behind electric vehicles. (FROM THE ARTICLE: How old you are could be more important to some employers than your experience, or your capacity to do the job – particularly for older candidates. That was the conclusion of research my colleagues and I recently published on age discrimination. We tested 500 managers across nine European countries, using job applications of people aged between 43 and 63, and showed more suitable job candidates did not experience less discrimination. Our findings are especially significant seeing as retirement ages are on the up. Since 2000 they have risen across Europe by an average of 2.5 years and in many countries are projected to increase even further. The COVID-19 pandemic is primarily increasing unemployment among younger workers, but acquiring a new job can be easier for them than for older people, precisely because of this inequality in hiring practices. Ageism is also known to force older workers to accept unfavorable job conditions. And we know prolonged unemployment for older people is painful both financially and for their mental health. Damaging stereotypes  One theory about age discrimination focuses on something known as “statistical discrimination”, which we looked at in our study. It is the idea that employers often lack the proper information to determine which candidate is best, and therefore they base their decisions on discriminatory stereotypes. Information refers, in this instance, to details about training, experience, motivation, performance, health, and retirement intentions, or what we called the six productivity indicators. Interviews with managers suggest employers still fear that older workers are sick more often and that they are less motivated, healthy and productive. So, given the choice between an old and a young candidate with identical CVs, an employer affected by statistical discrimination would supposedly choose the younger candidate. Without enough information to differentiate between the two, they would resort to the stereotype of the older candidate being less productive and sick more often. If this explanation for discrimination is true, then employers might discriminate less on age if they had more information. Positive information would be especially relevant, because this goes against stereotypes. Negative information only confirms what the stereotypes already suggested.)
