(FROM THE LETTER: Same sex marriages are legal and adoptions are now permitted. “Transing” from one gender to another is unusual no matter how you cut it. There is no reason for any hostility to gays and for those that have changed genders, but endorsing and even encouraging it is objectionable to many who have different views and believe strongly in the traditional family with one mom and one dad. There are celebs and great poets and philosophers who have been gay and have made contributions to society, no doubt about it. But the foundations for their good work had nothing to do with their sexual orientation.)

ATLANTIC
— Why Conservatives Are Turning Against Higher Education College isn’t providing an effective engine of upward mobility for most Americans. – Reihan Salam
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/08/higher-education-has-become-increasingly-partisan/596407/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: At a recent gathering of conservatives, for example, Hawley drew a straight line from the declining economic prospects of non-college-educated workers to a number of social maladies. “Just about any American worker without a four-year college degree will have a hard time in the cosmopolitan economy. Maybe that’s one reason why marriage rates among working-class Americans are falling, why birth rates are falling, why life expectancy is falling. All the while, an epidemic of suicide and drug addiction ravages every sector, every age group, every geography of the working class.” This divergence of the economic prospects of the college-educated and non-college-educated is hardly a new development. What is new, though, is the growing interest among Republican lawmakers, Hawley included, in doing something about it legislatively. One implication of the senator’s remarks is that Congress ought to be more solicitous of the interests of the non-college-educated, and to that end the senator recently introduced legislation that, according to The Hill, would allow low-income students to use federal dollars currently earmarked for higher education to pursue vocational training. Leaving aside the merits of Hawley’s proposal, there is reason to believe that it is good politics, or rather good Republican politics. As the Pew Research Center finds in a new survey, there’s been a sharp increase in dissatisfaction with America’s colleges and universities among Republicans in recent years, and it makes perfect sense for right-of-center policy makers to want to do something about it. Consider the changing composition of America’s major-party coalitions. Shortly after the 2018 midterms, Adam Harris observed that the Trump presidency was accelerating the “diploma divide,” which refers to the starkly different voting patterns of college-educated white voters and those without a degree, a split that is unique to whites. In the midterms, Republicans did 16 points better among whites without a college degree, while securing the votes of only 45 percent of their college-educated counterparts. In contrast, when George H. W. Bush defeated Michael Dukakis in 1988, he did so in part by winning college-educated white voters by 20 points. Another factor in the diploma divide is the gender gap in college attendance and completion. In the 1980s, women began graduating from college in higher numbers than men, and since then, their advantage has only widened. Today, you have to go up to the 60-and-over demographic before you find men outnumbering women among college graduates. The diploma divide has also had implications for partisan geography. When Republicans lost the House in 2006, half of their vulnerable seats were in districts that had more college graduates than the national average; that number was 70 percent for the 2018 midterms.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Whether weed-infused drinks are going to catch on the way vape pens, edibles, and traditional flower have is still up for debate, but your favorite beer companies are still most likely looking over their shoulders. And that’s because they have a legitimate concern that the cannabis industry may lure consumers away from alcohol. At “Cannabis In The Booze Industry,” a conference during Bar Convent Brooklyn, a trade show for the beverage industry in June 2019, leaders from both the cannabis and alcohol industries gathered to talk about how one affects the other. All signs are clear that the rapidly growing cannabis sector is a significant threat to the alcoholic beverage industry, particularly for beer drinking consumers. Larger alcoholic beverage distributors, including Constellation Brands, Molson Coors, and Heineken, have already invested heavily in cannabis in an effort to ride the wave rather than be washed away in a potential tsunami of non-alcoholic canna-drinks. Or, as studies like research from the University of Georgia and Syracuse University in New York are finding, legalization of marijuana could mean interest in — and consumption of — alcohol experiences a corresponding decline. . . .3). Bars Are Ready to Get Onboard With the inclusion of cannabis-infused drinks, bars stand to attract consumers who would want to socialize or recreationally indulge while avoiding alcohol. These beverages could offer options to widen bars’ customer base to include people who don’t want to drink alcohol. Since there’s a chill-factor to the beverages, whether they’re THC- or cannabidiol (CBD)-infused, makes them stand out from current non-alcoholic options.)

The City Council meeting brought close to 250 residents out to share their comments about the issue, which ended in a 6-3 vote in favor of opting out. . .The topic of recreational cannabis was discussed for more than three hours at Tuesday’s meeting, which was filled with dozens of residents sporting bright orange “Opt Out Naperville” t-shirts and pins. . .After the public comment portion of the meeting, City Council members had a chance to sound off on the issue. Council member Kevin Coyne said, “I think it’s a very clear and easy decision tonight.” He added that neighboring cities Wheaton and Bolingbrook will likely opt out and that he wanted to prevent Naperville from becoming the “marijuana capital of DuPage County.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The decision to opt out of recreational pot sales came several hours after hundreds of people began packing the Naperville City Council chambers as residents and non-residents waited their turn to comment on the issue of whether to allow the retail sale of pot. The discussion on marijuana sales brought 238 people to sign up for public comment on the topic — a vast majority speaking in favor of opting out while wearing white and orange “opt out” shirts. Over the past couple weeks, the group was organized to rally and lobby city council members to keep recreational cannabis dispensaries out of Naperville. At the same time, residents in support of retail marijuana sales have circulated a survey on the issue. People who asked city council to opt out Tuesday night are concerned recreational pot dispensaries would lead to increased availability to children and would hurt the “family friendly” brand of Naperville.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Three members of the nine-person City Council have been consistent in their oppositions to recreational marijuana. They are Patty Gustin, Kevin Coyne and Paul Hinterlong. On the other side, Judy Brodhead, Benny White and Mayor Steve Chirico have shown support for allowing recreational marijuana retail sales. The remaining three council members, Patrick Kelly, John Krummen and Theresa Sullivan, are somewhere in the middle and likely will ultimately decide whether Naperville will allow recreational marijuana dispensaries. . .School districts 203 and 204 sent letters to the city noting their reservations about Illinois’ new marijuana law, which takes effect Jan. 1. Sales will be legal only to people 21 and older. “The District 203 Board of Education, speaking on behalf of the many students, parents, district staff and administrators and community, has serious concerns about the impact of recreational marijuana sales on the teens in our school district. We urge the City Council to consider the impact of its actions on the teens in our community,” District 203′s letter said. The School District 204 Board of Education raised similar concerns. “While it will remain illegal for our students to purchase recreational marijuana, we have concerns that the increased availability in our community may lead to potential issues at school,” the District 204′s letter says. “With easier access to recreational marijuana in our community, what will be the long-term cognitive impact on our youth who use the drug?” North Central College also sent a letter, which did not so much take a stance on the issue but pointed out that “because marijuana remains illegal under federal law and federal financial assistance remains important to the College and our students, marijuana will continue to be banned on our campus.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Westerhout, whose access to the White House was revoked Thursday, made the off-the-record remarks at a dinner with reporters who were covering him during this month’s summer break in New Jersey. “Everything she said was off the record,” Trump told reporters. “And that still doesn’t really cover for her. She mentioned a couple of things about my children.” “I think the press is very dishonest because it was supposed to be off the record,” he added. “But, still, you don’t say things like she said, which were just a little bit hurtful to some people.” The president said Westerhout told him she had been drinking at the dinner. “She’s a very … good person,” Trump said. “I always felt she did a good job. … … I really think she had a bad night. … And I wish her well.” “[T]he press breaks off-the-records all the time because they are very dishonorable. Many of them. Not all of you, but many of them are very dishonorable.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: I made a promise to myself early in my career. If my job ever became so unbearable that I got stomach cramps at just the thought of walking into the office, it was time to quit. But what if staying in your crummy job is the only way to have tens of thousands of dollars in student debt forgiven? This is the issue vexing a reader, who asked me during a recent online discussion: Should I stay or should I go? “I’m a federal employee with five years left to loan forgiveness,” the person wrote. “I work in a toxic office and have been trying for several years to find a job in a different agency. I was recently offered a two-year term position that would be in a new practice area with supervisory responsibility and a fairly significant pay raise. But I would lose the ‘golden handcuffs’ of virtually guaranteed employment and risk losing six-figure loan forgiveness if I don’t find a permanent position during the two years. Is it worth it?”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: China effectively expelled a Wall Street Journal reporter from the country, one month after the newspaper published a report detailing allegations that a cousin of Chinese leader Xi Jinping was involved in high-stakes gambling and potential money laundering in Australia. Chinese authorities told the Journal on Friday it would not renew press credentials for Chun Han Wong, a Singapore national who has covered Chinese politics out of the paper’s Beijing bureau since 2014. Those credentials expired Friday. China sometimes withholds or refuses visas to punish international news organizations for what the ruling Communist Party perceives as unfavorable coverage. But the decision amounted to the first time in recent memory that the Chinese government has effectively turfed out a reporter from the Journal, a publication generally known for incisive but evenhanded coverage of the country.)

DAILY HERALD
— OUTSTANDING: Naperville resident organizing rallies against recreational pot – Marie Wilson
https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20190829/naperville-resident-organizing-rallies-against-recreational-pot
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Jennifer Bruzan Taylor does not want her children living near recreational marijuana dispensaries. She feels so strongly about the issue that she’s organizing a movement encouraging her hometown to #OptOutNaperville. Bruzan Taylor is one of about 15 people planning rallies to push the Naperville City Council to prohibit recreational marijuana shops from opening under the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, which goes into effect Jan. 1. The city could enact a ban as soon as Tuesday; the issue is expected to be up for a vote during a meeting at 7 p.m. in the municipal center at 400 S. Eagle St. The Opt Out Naperville movement is hosting rallies at 10 a.m. Saturday in Central Park and 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Free Speech Pavilion along the Riverwalk to gather people who want the ban put into effect. Bruzan Taylor said she expects around 100 people to attend the Saturday event. “I would never have moved here if we had opted into selling recreational marijuana,” said Bruzan Taylor, a Naperville native who moved back to her hometown because of its strong reputation as a kid-friendly place. “I would have picked a suburb that didn’t.” In Chicago, where Bruzan Taylor and her family lived for about 10 years, she said neighbors using marijuana in their condo building would overwhelm the place with the smell of weed. If Naperville allows shops selling the drug for recreational purposes, she said she fears the same would happen in the state’s fourth-largest city. “I know it’s supposed to be on private property only,” she said about recreational use. “And yet, that’s not what happens.” . . . Bruzan Taylor hopes Naperville leaders will decide the best location for these businesses is nowhere. “I just don’t see this as being good for Naperville economically and also for its image as being family conscious,” she said. “I decided to organize this (rallies) in order to show the councilmen that people in Naperville care about this.”)

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/if-you-care-about-journalism-youre-defending-brian-karem-and-joel-pollack
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Snowflakery knows no political bent, and hostility towards the free press is a grievance centuries older than the First Amendment. The twin tales of Playboy’s Brian Karem and Breitbart’s Joel Pollak exemplifies the oft ignored fact that people in power of all political stripes simply despise answering to the Fourth Estate. Karem’s currently fighting the Trump administration in the courtroom to reclaim his hard pass, which the White House suspended following the journalist’s verbal sparring match with an equally belligerent Sebastian Gorka during the president’s social media summit in the Rose Garden. Beto O’Rourke staffers booted Pollak from a campaign event, with the 2020 longshot’s spokeswoman lambasting as “hateful” and bordering on “perpetrat[ing] hate speech.” Both fights are absurd, and not because of the journalists prolonging them. Neither Karem nor Pollak have hidden their ideological or partisan affinities. The Playboy White House correspondent openly excoriates the president on Twitter, while Pollak’s persona and outlet are openly conservative. But both do actual journalism, and petty politicians have no right to sit in judgment. As long as they’re going to claim they support a free press, the Trumps and Betos of the world must tolerate the scrutiny, tough questions, and even intentional rhetorical provocations that come as a natural responsibility of power.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the latest sign that major American media outlets are losing the public’s support, a majority believe it is appropriate for politicians to criticize reporters and hold them to the same scrutiny as those they cover. A new Rasmussen Reports survey also said most voters believe the average journalist is liberal, and few are conservative. The survey is an indictment of the media at a time when liberal outlets such as CNN and the New York Times are stepping up their attack on President Trump and congressional Republicans. The outlets are also complaining about Trump’s criticism of them and called out Trump surrogates who are using social media to point out the bias of journalists. But, said Rasmussen, voters believe that reporters are fair game for criticism. The survey analysis said 61% of likely U.S. voters think reporters at major news organizations like CNN, Fox News, and the New York Times are public figures who deserve scrutiny. Some 19% disagree. Significantly, 51% said “it is appropriate for elected officials to criticize specific reporters and news organizations,” Rasmussen reported in the survey shared with Secrets before its release. Another 39% view the criticism as a threat to freedom of the press. That is slightly higher than the 48% who said criticism from politicians was OK back in February 2017 when Trump began singling out news organizations that were attacking him. And the public continues to view journalists as liberal. The survey said 47% believe the typical reporter is more liberal than they are. Just 19% of voters believe reporters are more conservative than they are.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— OUTSTANDING: Rally aims to persuade Naperville City Council to ban retail marijuana sales – SUZANNE BAKER (DIERSEN: Federal law and the Republican Party platform oppose recreational pot. Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. Everyone in Illinois who states that they are religious, conservative, and/or Republican, and especially Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains, Republican township/ward/county organization officials, Illinois Republican Party officials, and Republican elected and appointed officials, should speak out against the retail sale of pot at all upcoming meetings held by their municipality and county. Those who speak in favor of the retail sale of pot should immediately resign, and if not, be removed from office.)
https://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/ct-nvs-naperville-opt-out-rally-st-0828-20190828-i6xh3flcfrethav6bgunyb3c24-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A recently created group formed to persuade the Naperville City Council to ban the sale of recreational marijuana in the city will hold a rally Saturday to support those efforts. Naperville resident Jennifer Taylor said she organized the group, called Opt Out Naperville, and the rally to show council members how many people don’t want pot sold in the city. Taylor, who has spoken out against marijuana sales at the July 16 and Aug. 20 council meetings, said many people in the audience support her position. “Yet it feels like their voices are not being heard,” she said. “This is about keeping Naperville family-focused,” said Taylor, a mother of two. Saturday’s rally will start at 10 a.m. Saturday in Central Park, which is located one block east of Washington Street and just south of Benton Avenue.“ (The rally) is one of many avenues to show that the residents don’t this this here,” Taylor said. Opt Out Naperville also is hosting a gathering at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the free speech pavilion along the Riverwalk near Jackson Avenue and Webster Street, just before the Naperville City Council meeting at 7 p.m. Taylor said not everyone is able to attend the council meeting and the meetup is a way to show support. “This is one of the most important decisions that will be made on the dias. It will shape the future of Naperville,” she said. The city council will be at a crossroads the next time it discusses the retail sale of recreational marijuana, which becomes legal in Illinois Jan. 1. Last week the council directed staff develop a plan for what allowing recreational pot sales would look like. The previous month the council asked staff to prepare an ordinance for Naperville to opt out. Any decision likely may hinge on the vote of council member Patrick Kelly. Kelly voted last week with council members Judy Brodhead, John Krummen, Benny White and Mayor Steve Chirico in favor of asking city staff to prepare a plan for recreational marijuana sales. Last month he voted with council members Kevin Coyne, Patty Gustin, Paul Hinterlong and Theresa Sullivan on a plan to opt out. Coyne said he’s glad members of the community like Taylor are stepping up to take a leadership role on this issue. He said he’s heard from “a great many” from community opposed to pot sales in the city and expects many of those different stakeholders will attend the rally. During public comment at the meeting last week, support for and against recreational marijuana sales was generally split among the roughly 20 people who spoke on the issue. Those in favor of allowing recreational marijuana sales in Naperville, including Mayor Steve Chirico, have said banning retail pot sales in the city will simply drive residents to buy it elsewhere and let other communities realize the tax benefits. And those tax benefits could help offset any costs to Naperville related to marijuana use by its residents. Gustin, who plans to speak at the Saturday rally, said opting out is the best option because the city needs more time to study not only statistics from other municipalities that legalized pot but to analyze the effects of marijuana sales on the community. “Naperville is a family-friendly community. Naperville is a kid-friendly community. Naperville is an education-focused community,” Gustin said. “Opting-out is the smart thing to in an educated community.” [Most read] Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot 100 days in — reform at City Hall still a work in progress: ‘We haven’t declared victory, but I think we’ve taken some very positive steps.’ The state’s fourth largest city may seem like an unlikely spot for a contentious debate on allowing recreational marijuana sales. It was one of the first Illinois cities in the area to raise the age to purchase tobacco from 18 to 21 when it did so in 2016, more than two years before the age was raised statewide. The city was among the first to ban smoking in enclosed public places and the workplace. Naperville was also one of the first of Illinois’ largest cities to ban video gambling despite it being legal at the state level.)

USA TODAY
— An internship is a must-have for college graduates – Johnny C. Taylor Jr. (DIERSEN: Were you an intern? GAO audits IRS. When I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old, my Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinated did not want me to transfer, but failing that, they wanted me to transfer as a GS-4 Step 1 (currently $33,591/year) intern, that is, to suffer a $60,001/year (64%) pay cut in today’s dollars. They painted what GAO Analysts do as being a unique “trade or occupation.” They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, or veteran. They viciously demonized, denigrated, and condemned the fact a) that I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $82,579-$93,592/year, b) that much of what IRS Revenue Officers do is similar to what GAO Analysts do, c) that I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, d) that I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976, and e) that I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul. They were furious that I transferred with me almost 12 years of federal seniority, 30 days of unused vacation days, and 130 unused sick days.)
