http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/evanston/news/ct-evr-evanston-racial-discrimination-lawsuit-tl-0504-20170519-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A former Evanston public works director Suzette Robinson is suing the city and several city officials for what the lawsuit alleges was “discrimination on the basis of race, harassment and [a] racially hostile work environment, and for retaliation.” However, Evanston’s city manager, who was named as one of the defendants in the suit, said Suzette Robinson’s race played no part in the decision to eliminate her job. “I deny Ms. Robinson’s claims in this lawsuit that race or retaliation had any role in my decision-making,” said Evanston City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz. In the complaint, filed May 27, 2016, in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, Robinson asks for $75,000 in compensation, plus attorney’s fees and punitive damages. She names Bobkiewicz, the City of Evanston, city attorney W. Grant Farrar and human resources manager Jennifer Lin as defendants. According to the lawsuit, Robinson was public works director for Evanston from March 2010 until August 2015. The suit said that she was one of “three African-American employees at the department director level reporting directly to Bobkiewicz.” The complaint reads that Robinson’s position was eliminated, “effective immediately,” in August 2015 after Bobkiewicz stated “that the city planned to combine public works and utilities into one department named the public works agency.” But the lawsuit says the City Council did not approve the “proposed reorganization” until September 2015. Robinson alleges that Bobkiewicz “discriminated against her on the basis of race” and “retaliated against her” “for filing complaints about racial discrimination,” according to court documents.)

NEW YORK TIMES
— The Conservative Force Behind Speeches Roiling College Campuses – STEPHANIE SAUL  (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, schools crank out hate-filled “good little Democrats” who are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/20/us/college-conservative-speeches.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE:  “Let’s give it up for the racists that are hosting this event!” someone yelled, and the crowd roared, foot-stomping in unison, then breaking into song: Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.” One member of the audience held up a sign, “Queers Against Islamaphobia.” Another unfurled a banner: “Muslims Welcome. Fascists Get Out.” Close to 200 students kept up the noise for more than an hour in a University at Buffalo lecture hall on May 1, mostly drowning out the evening’s featured speaker, Robert Spencer, a conservative author and blogger who espouses a dark view of Islam. The event appeared to follow a familiar script, in which a large contingent of liberals muzzles a provocative speaker invited by a small conservative student club. But the propelling force behind the event — and a number of recent heat-seeking speeches on college campuses — was a national conservative group that is well funded, highly organized and on a mission, in its words, to “restore sanity at your school.” The group, the Young America’s Foundation, had paid Mr. Spencer’s $2,000 fee, trained the student leader who organized the event and provided literature for distribution. Other than the possibility of outside interference, little had been left to chance. The speeches are a part of the group’s mission of grooming future conservative leaders — Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Stephen Miller, a White House adviser, are among its alumni — and its long list of donors has included the television game show host Pat Sajak, the novelist Tom Clancy, the billionaire brothers David H. and Charles G. Koch, and the Amway billionaires Richard and Helen Devos, who gave $10 million to endow the Reagan Ranch near Santa Barbara, Calif., which the foundation runs as a preserve. (Their daughter-in-law, Betsy DeVos, the secretary of education, is not a donor, the group says.) Over the past two years, armed with a $16 million infusion from the estate of an orthodontist in California, Robert Ruhe, the organization has doubled its programming, including campus speeches. In 2016 that meant 111 speakers on 77 campuses. On the group’s website, it boasted of “dispatching” 31 speakers to colleges last month alone. In that time, the speakers have gotten edgier, more in-your-face and sometimes even meanspirited. Among them is Ann Coulter, whose canceled speech last month at the University of California, Berkeley, led the foundation, which was covering most of her $20,000 fee, to sue the college, arguing that it had violated the First Amendment in its failure to provide a suitable time and place for the event. The resulting clashes on university campuses, including protests and efforts to block speeches, have raised free speech questions. And at Berkeley, even liberals who oppose Ms. Coulter’s viewpoints said her speech should have been allowed to proceed. In the meantime, protesters have questioned whether such events are cynically intended to provoke reactions. “It’s part of a larger systematic and extremely well-funded effort to disrupt public universities and create tension among student groups on campus,” said Alexandra Prince, a doctoral student at Buffalo who circulated a petition to block Mr. Spencer.)

http://www.govexec.com/pay-benefits/2017/05/trumps-2018-budget-reportedly-targets-federal-retirement-programs/138014/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The proposed cuts to retirement benefits sparked swift condemnation by Democrats and groups representing federal workers and retirees. Richard Thissen, national president of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, called the proposal an “egregious attack on federal service and seniors” and “unconscionable.”  “The president purports to defend government annuities like Social Security and then proposes to eliminate cost-of-living adjustments for some and limit COLAs for those already retired and living on fixed incomes,” Thissen said. “It is beyond insulting. It is downright mean. Simultaneously promoting tax cuts and forcing a tax on just federal employees, through an increase in retirement contributions, is the height of hypocrisy.” J. David Cox, national president of the American Federation of Government Employees blasted the plan as something that “defies reason.” “The American people knows what’s fair, and raiding the already-modest retirement benefits of the people who inspect our food and lock up dangerous criminals is beyond the pale,” Cox said. “These proposals portray an astounding misplacement of priorities that the American public should not soon forget.” And Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., said cuts to federal retirement benefits will hurt the government’s ability to attract workers capable of fulfilling the missions of various federal agencies. “The biggest losers from President Trump’s draconian cuts to federal employee pay and benefits will be the American people who count on dedicated federal employees to care for our veterans, maintain our national parks, and process Social Security checks each and every day,” Connolly said. “Cuts of this magnitude will make it impossible to recruit and retain the qualified workforce we need to meet our nation’s challenges.”)

MADISON RECORD
— A 1972 court order prohibits political hiring for non-political state positions. – Editorial
http://madisonrecord.com/stories/511113728-illegally-hired-state-employees-need-to-be-fired
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Did you know that patronage hiring is illegal in Illinois? Well, it is.  A 1972 court order prohibits political hiring for non-political state positions. It’s been ignored too often for many of the last 45 years, but it’s still in effect, and we now have a governor who wants to abide by it and thinks it should be enforced. The big problem for Bruce Rauner is that state employee rolls are already riddled with patronage hires and any attempt to identify them and weed them out is going to be resisted by the public employee unions to which they belong. In 2014, Federal Magistrate Judge Sidney Schenkier, who is overseeing ongoing proceedings in the case (Shakman) that led to the 1972 court order, appointed Noelle Brennan as a special master to investigate the hiring practices of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). On April 24 of this year, Special Master Brennan reported that state officials (including Rep. Jay Hoffman of Belleville and Sen. James Clayborne of East St. Louis) had abused a special hiring exemption to place at least dozens of friends, family, and supporters into so-called “staff assistant” positions at IDOT and other state agencies, in violation of the 1972 court order. “The governor’s office [in the previous administration] received, reviewed, forwarded, and tracked resumes,” Brennan affirmed; “most of those candidates had a political connection; and many of the politically connected candidates hired … lacked any policy or other relevant experience.” The following day, Gov. Rauner  filed a “motion for clarification” in Chicago federal court, asking for guidance as to whether state employees improperly hired through political connections can use collective bargaining agreements to remain in their positions, transfer to others, or be promoted. In other words, do the state’s collective bargaining agreements and related labor relations documents trump the court decree prohibiting patronage hiring? The abuses perpetrated by Pat Quinn, Mike Madigan, and other insubordinate public servants need to stopped.)

— Would you let the IRS automatically file your taxes on your behalf? – Peter Hong  (DIERSEN: While I worked for IRS’s Collection Division 1971-1980, I filed “substitute returns” for individuals, organizations, and companies that failed/refused to file.)
http://netrightdaily.com/2017/05/would-you-let-the-irs-automatically-file-your-taxes-on-your-behalf/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: What’s the second most dangerous pickup line in America? “Hi, I’m from the government and I’m here to help.” The most dangerous, you ask? “I’m from the IRS, and I’m here to help.” Yet, that’s exactly what every American taxpayer will be hearing if the “Tax Filing Simplification Act” is ever enacted into law. Introduced by Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, this bill would direct our friends at the Internal Revenue Service to fill out your tax returns with information the IRS collects from your employer and your bank. All you have to do is sign on the dotted line — and pay the amount the IRS has so generously pre-determined for you.)
— Clock-watchers: Federal employees get raises about every other year on the job – Robert Romano  (DIERSEN: Except for 1980, when I took an $18,847 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO, my salary increased every year that I worked for the federal government 1966-1969 and 1971-1997 because of COLAs, step increases, and/or promotions.  In my defense, I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 33.)

ONE NEWS NOW
— A widening love-my-country gap from Democrats – Chad Groening  (DIERSEN: What do you say to those who discourage Republican activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. from supporting Wheaton’s Independence Day parades?)
https://www.onenewsnow.com/culture/2017/05/09/a-widening-love-my-country-gap-from-dems
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Longtime conservative activist Gary Bauer is concerned about the growing patriotism gap between the two major political parties in America. A recent Gallup poll found that fewer Democrats are proud to be Americans. The survey, conducted in March 2017, revealed 67 percent of Democrats are “extremely proud” or “very proud” to be Americans; that compares to 78 percent in 2016. There was little change among Republicans and Independents. In fact, the survey shows Republicans’ pride at 92 percent. Gallup reports the current 25-point gap in patriotic feelings between Republicans and Democrats is the highest in Gallup’s records. In January 2007, the party gap was 21 points. Gary Bauer of the Campaign for Working Families recently wrote on American Thinker that this patriotism gap is getting far less attention than it deserves. “There is a growing radical left in the Democratic Party,” Bauer tells OneNewsNow. “And there is a growing movement among young Americans who tend to be leaning toward the left politically who are not traditionally patriotic any longer.” Bauer thinks there are several reasons for that, including the anti-American history being taught in colleges and universities. “And then there’s this tendency on the radical left to see America as a country that oppresses people, that was built on slavery,” he says. “So it’s a serious issue when there is declining patriotism overall. It’s a serious issue when the left wing of one party seems to be declining in its patriotic feelings. “Bauer says it’s particularly troubling when younger Americans have lower levels of patriotism than any American generation in modern history.)

BUZPAC REVIEW
— Trump signing statement ends federal goodies for minorities and women; treats all Americans equally – Tom Tillison (DIERSEN: To give preference to one group is to discriminate against another group.  To give preference to citizens of foreign countries, non-Protestants, Democrats, minorities, females, younger people, veterans, recent immigrants, etc. IS TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST citizens of America, Protestants, Republicans, Whites, males, older people, non-veterans, non-recent immigrants, etc.)
http://www.bizpacreview.com/2017/05/06/trump-signing-statement-ends-federal-goodies-minorities-women-treats-americans-equally-486532
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump included a signing statement when he signed the spending bill that funds the federal government through September that effectively puts an end to affirmative action when it comes to taxpayer-funded grants. Imagine that, treating Americans equally. Pointing to the Constitution, the president said he will treat programs established by Congress that give preferences based on race and sex for grants “consistent with the requirement to afford equal protection of the laws,” the USA Today reported. Provisions described as “impermissible forms of congressional aggrandizement in the execution of the laws.” The signing statement reads: “My Administration shall treat provisions that allocate benefits on the basis of race, ethnicity, and gender in a manner consistent with the requirement to afford equal protection of the laws under the Due Process Clause of the Constitution’s Fifth Amendment.” The Daily Mail reported on programs named in the statement: “The signing statement specifically mentions a $654 million set-aside for Native American and Native Alaskan housing block grants; a $34 million appropriation for the Commerce Department’s Minority Business Development Agency; more than $20 million to guarantee loans to historically black colleges and universities; and $15 million to boost payments to ‘native Hawaiian’ defense contractors.” All of which is sure to have minority groups and women crying foul… while millions of white American males feel a little more equal today. For the record, signing statements are not exclusive to the Trump presidency. The Washington Times reported that “Presidents [Barack] Obama and George W. Bush issued dozens of ‘signing statements’ spelling out areas where they disagreed with congressional intent in various legislation, and asserting their executive authority to carry out the law as they saw fit.” Other areas addressed on Friday include weapons programs, state and local marijuana laws and Guantanamo Bay.)

https://thinkprogress.org/gop-congressman-supports-covering-pre-existing-conditions-but-only-for-people-who-have-led-good-51944a953f0e
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But as Rep. Brooks sees it, being afflicted with a serious or life-threatening pre-existing condition is the price you pay if you don’t live a healthy lifestyle. “My understanding is that it will allow insurance companies to require people who have higher health care costs to contribute more to the insurance pool,” said Brooks. “That helps offset all these costs, thereby reducing the cost to those people who lead good lives, they’re healthy, they’ve done the things to keep their bodies healthy. And right now those are the people—who’ve done things the right way—that are seeing their costs skyrocketing.” . . . Rep. Brooks’ argument echoes a similar one made by Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) several weeks ago when the House was debating the first version of Trumpcare. With a fancy chart by his side, Ryan bemoaned the unfairness of a system in which people who are generally healthy end up subsidizing the cost for people who need medical care. Why should healthy people shoulder some of the costs for sick people?)

http://wgntv.com/2017/05/04/protesters-target-local-gop-after-health-care-bill-passes-house/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois congressional delegation went right along party lines in the American Health Care bill vote. Every Chicago-area Democrat voted against the American Health Care Act. Every Republican voted for it. 6th District Congressman Peter Roskam returned from Washington this afternoon and has protesters gathered outside his office by evening. In a statement, Gov Bruce Rauner said, “The bill that passed in the U.S. House today continues to be of deep concern to our administration.” He’s concerned about the impact on Medicaid. Chicago’s mayor thinks backers of the AHCA need to worry about the senate. “I think the senate is going to look at this and say this is a non-starter and that it’s not going to happen,” he said. The bill, which passed with just one vote to spare after six weeks of work, is expected to be a much tougher sell in the senate.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In general, CEOs at public companies around Chicago got smaller raises than counterparts elsewhere last year. A median pay hike of 3.6 percent trailed the 5.5 percent increase for CEOs at companies in the Russell 3000 Index. But don’t feel sorry for our CEOs—their 2016 median pay of $5.4 million was well above the $4.1 million median for the Russell 3000. Higher median pay reflects Chicago’s significant concentration of large companies with multiple business lines and worldwide operations, says John Roe, head of ISS Analytics. “There are some very large, very complex corporations there,” Roe says. “That tends to result in higher pay packages.”)

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/05/04/house-republicans-election-fate-obamacare-repeal-237998
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rep. Peter Roskam of Illinois (Clinton: 50 percent, Roskam: 60 percent in 2016)  On Thursday morning, Democrat Kelly Mazeski, a breast cancer survivor, entered the contest — one of a slew of candidates with pre-existing conditions or personal experience with the travails of the health care system whom Democrats expect to see run this cycle. Roskam comes from an increasingly diverse district in the western suburbs of Chicago that has trended Democratic at the presidential level. He faced tough races in the past, though redistricting shifted his district into more safely Republican territory six years ago. “It’s time the people of Illinois’ 6th District hold Peter Roskam accountable for voting to make Americans pay more and get less for their health care,” Mazeski said in announcing her bid.)

My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always treated me like they predicted that I would die long before I might retaliate against them. They base that on my father having type 1 diabetes from age 14 and his sudden death caused by heart failure in 1969 when he was 47 and I was 21.  More recently, they base their predictions on my being 68 years old, my having type 2 diabetes, my being overweight, and my not getting enough exercise. https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/people/2017/05/04/prince-philip-jokes-about-his-pending-retirement-while-still-on-the-job/101292296/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Can anyone in Britain really imagine Prince Philip retired and puttering around the palace? In fact, the 95-year-old Duke of Edinburgh was joking about the big-news-that-wasn’t-big news on Thursday at — where else? — an official engagement with his wife of nearly 70 years, Queen Elizabeth II (who’s already vowed she’s never going to retire). Philip, who turns 96 in June, was at his customary place behind the queen as they attended the Order of Merit service at the Chapel Royal in St James’s Palace in London. His quick sense of humor seemed to be fully intact. When a well-wisher expressed sadness at his decision to “stand down,” Philip joked back: “I can’t stand up much longer.”)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Rauner reveals who paid for airplane on his statewide tour – Rick Pearson  (DIERSEN: One could argue that my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails are in-kind contributions to those who read them.  Annual GOPUSA ILLINOIS email subscriptions are worth at least $1,000.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-bruce-rauner-plane-expense-0501-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It shows an in-kind contribution from Donald Wilson, CEO of DRW Trading Group, providing the governor’s campaign with the “use of private jet” valued at $14,882. Wilson has contributed to Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s fund and paid for a mayoral trip to Washington, D.C., on a regulatory matter. Rauner traditionally attends events by car after having grounded the state’s air fleet early in his first term. The campaign disclosure report also showed the Illinois Republican Party providing $51,400 worth of polling services. In early April, the Chicago Tribune noted that a pollster with ties to a firm that Rauner previously has used was making automated calls asking voters about the governor, two potential Democratic challengers and President Donald Trump.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The race for Illinois governor in 2018 includes at least three millionaires, but Daniel Biss isn’t one of them. Biss, a state senator from Evanston who is running for the Democratic nomination, and his wife, Karen, had an adjusted gross income of $32,568 in 2016. It’s about half what he reported in earlier years, the result of lawmakers’ pay being withheld by the Illinois comptroller until a court intervened. Biss recently released five years of returns while pushing a measure requiring presidential candidates to release five years of income tax returns to get on the ballot in Illinois. It passed the Senate 32-19 vote and is headed to the House. Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner has released his tax returns every year, and other Democratic primary bidders — J.B. Pritzker of Chicago, Chris Kennedy of Kenilworth, and Chicago Alderman Ameya Pawar all say they’re planning to release their returns, too.)

GOPUSA
— Racism Claims a Cover for Fox News Purge? – Cliff Kincaid  (DIERSEN: In 2002, I led a group that succeeded in forcing Comcast to start carrying Fox News Channel in Wheaton and in other western suburbs. To this day, those in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who hate Fox News Channel have done everything that they can to destroy me.)
http://www.gopusa.com/?p=23722
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sexual harassment and now racial discrimination complaints are providing the excuses James Murdoch may need to purge the conservative news personalities who have made the Fox News Channel a success. James Murdoch is the liberal son of Fox News parent company owner Rupert Murdoch and one of the heirs to his father’s media empire. His wife was a major figure in the Clinton Climate Initiative project who despises conservatives and President Donald Trump personally. A close reading of the legal complaint joined by black Fox News anchor Kelly Wright against the network leads one to conclude that the purpose is to enable the owners of the parent company (the Murdochs) to purge the conservatives by accusing them of racism, and then turn the channel into another left-wing propaganda organ in the name of “diversity and inclusion.” The suit notes that “public pressure” and not a legal finding of fact forced Bill O’Reilly out of his anchor chair at Fox. Hence, why not use the same tactics to get rid of other Fox News managers, editors, anchors or personalities? It worked once. It could work again. In one of these feeding frenzies, the facts get lost. What matters are the charges, not whether they are true or not. Despite the attempt to portray him as a victim of racism, Wright’s bio at Fox News says he currently serves as co-anchor on America’s News Headquarters on Saturdays from 4-5 p.m. ET, as well as an overnight breaking news anchor based in New York. His impressive bio lists many stories he has covered at home and abroad. Page 18 of the complaint says, “Throughout his employment with Fox, Mr. Wright has covered many of the biggest news stories to break over the past 14 years, often breaking the stories himself.” This is hardly the record of an employee being marginalized because of his skin color. The complaint insists that “The discriminatory conduct committed against Mr. Wright has resulted in stunted career growth and advancement despite his remarkable success.” He has had “remarkable” success in a “stunted” career?Despite this doubletalk, his lawyers at Wigdor LLP held a dramatic news conference with Wright to announce the charges, which were immediately picked up by the channel’s competitors. It is all about “public pressure” on the Murdochs and the fundamental transformation of Fox News. The complaint says that Wright has been, and continues to be, “the victim of pervasive race discrimination at Fox,” because he did not get this or that position. It says he does not have his own show on the channel, as if he is entitled to one. Wright is a Fox News anchor, one of three black anchors overall, but “his anchor position is one of far lower visibility than those held by his White colleagues,” the complaint states. But it may well be that he doesn’t have the on-camera presence and talent to attract an audience. The legal complaint asserts the existence of a pervasive culture of “institutional racism” at Fox News. For example, the recently ousted Bill O’Reilly is quoted as saying that some black neighborhoods have deteriorated into “free-fire zones.” For having an opinion on black crime and other remarks, O’Reilly is branded a racist.)

— Defamation, Libel, and Slander: Key Elements of a Claim  Learn what a plaintiff needs to prove in order to hold someone liable for defamation.  (DIERSEN: Are you a “public figure?”  What do you say to my critics, their operatives, and their dupes who paint me as being a “public figure” so that they have more freedom to defame me, to libel me, and slander me?)
http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/defamation-libel-slander-key-elements-claim.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Defamation, libel, and slander: we have all heard of these legal terms, but what do they actually mean?  In general, a defamatory statement is a false statement of fact that is negligently or intentionally communicated or published to a third party, and that causes injury or damage to the subject of the statement. Libel and slander are different types of defamation. Libel is a written defamatory statement, and slander is an oral defamatory statement. Read on to learn more about the key elements of a defamation claim. (More: Get the  Basics on Defamation Law.)  What is a Defamatory Statement? A statement is defamatory if it tends to hold the plaintiff (the subject of the statement, who is bringing the lawsuit) up to scorn, hatred, ridicule, disgrace, or contempt, in the mind of any considerable and respectable segment of the community. There are certain types of statements that are automatically considered defamatory in some states. These types of statements are often called defamatory “per se” Statements that are defamatory “per se” include statements that claim that the plaintiff: has committed a serious, notorious, or immoral crime, has an infectious or terrible disease, or is incompetent in his job, trade, or profession. Defamation is a False Statement of Fact, Not Opinion The most important aspect of a potentially defamatory statement is that it purports to be a statement of fact. Opinions are not defamatory. People have an absolute right to express whatever opinions they like about other people. Let’s look at some examples of facts versus opinions. . .The Statement Must Have Been Made to a Third Party. . .Private Figures vs. Public Figures – Negligence vs. Intent. . .Damages for Defamatory Statements)

NOLO
— Defamation Law Made Simple  Learn the basics of slander and libel — the rules about who can say what without getting into legal hot water. – Emily Doskow, Attorney  (DIERSEN: Are you a “public figure?”  What do you say to my critics, their operatives, and their dupes who paint me as being a “public figure” so that they have more freedom to defame me, to libel me, and slander me?)
http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/defamation-law-made-simple-29718.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Defamation” is a catch-all term for any statement that hurts someone’s reputation. Written defamation is called “libel,” and spoken defamation is called “slander.” Defamation is not a crime, but it is a “tort” (a civil wrong, rather than a criminal wrong). A person who has been defamed can sue the person who did the defaming.  (For in-depth information on defamation claims, check out Nolo’s  Defamation, Libel & Slander  section.)  Defamation law tries to balance competing interests: On the one hand, people should not ruin others’ lives by telling lies about them; but on the other hand, people should be able to speak freely without fear of litigation over every insult, disagreement, or mistake. Political and social disagreement is important in a free society, and we obviously don’t all share the same opinions or beliefs. For instance, political opponents often reach opposite conclusions from the same facts, and editorial cartoonists often exaggerate facts to make their point. What the victim must prove to establish that defamation occurred  The law of defamation varies from state to state, but there are some generally accepted rules. If you believe you are have been “defamed,” to prove it you usually have to show there’s been a statement that is all of the following: published, false, injurious, unprivileged . . . Public officials and figures have a harder time proving defamation.)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_figure
(FROIM THE POSTING: A fairly high threshold of public activity is necessary to elevate people to public figure status. Typically, they must either be: a public figure, either a public official or any other person pervasively involved in public affairs, or a limited purpose public figure, meaning those who have “thrust themselves to the forefront of particular public controversies in order to influence the resolution of the issues involved.” A “particularized determination” is required to decide whether a person is a limited purpose public figure, which can be variously interpreted: A person can become an “involuntary public figure” as the result of publicity, even though that person did not want or invite the public attention. For example, people accused of high profile crimes may be unable to pursue actions for defamation even after their innocence is established…A person can also become a “limited public figure” by engaging in actions which generate publicity within a narrow area of interest.)

Financial aid and scholarships represent the biggest piece of Wheaton’s endowment spending, about 38 percent. That amount, $6.8 million, has been growing in both dollars and percentage of endowment spending. The latest round will provide scholarships for about 800 students out of a total student body of 2,650 students. But like Northwestern, Wheaton saw its endowment shrink last year, dropping 5.3 percent, to $388 million. Nevertheless, Wheaton still boosted its financial aid from all sources, including the endowment, by 3.7 percent in 2017 and plans to spend even more next year, investment manager Kenneth Larson said.)

GAO, all of the following made it very clear that they favored patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation: the District Court Judge Amy J. http://www.news-gazette.com/opinion/columns/2017-04-30/jim-dey-powerful-pols-got-illegal-state-hiring-scheme.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Patronage hiring, like that on display in the IDOT episode, is illegal as a consequence of a 1990 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Rutan v. Republican Party of Illinois. As a consequence of that decision, the high court banned the practice with the exception of a handful of top policy positions in the upper reaches of the executive departments. Those appointed top management positions are called “Rutan-exempt” while lower-level jobs are labeled “Rutan-covered.” To get around the law, top Quinn officials created Rutan-exempt “staff assistant” positions who did “Rutan-covered” work and filled them with clouted job-seekers. Later, Quinn’s people would transfer the staff assistants into legitimate Rutan-covered positions after conducting phony jobs searches. In favoring those with clout, state officials squandered state dollars on unqualified individuals. IDOT also put others seeking state employment at an impossible disadvantage.)

— Can you actually become a millionaire on an average salary? – Christy Bieber
http://money.cnn.com/2017/04/28/pf/millionaire-average-salary/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Becoming a millionaire has long been part of the American dream, but saving $1 million is not just an idle fantasy for most Americans. Saving at least $1 million is a dream many feel must come true if they’re going to have a comfortable retirement. In fact, of the Americans who have attempted to figure out how much they must save for retirement, 37% believe they need at least $1 million, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Saving enough for retirement is a significant source of stress, and it’s natural to worry about reaching a savings goal of $1 million. Banking this much money may seem impossible on an average person’s salary, but could it actually be realistic? Can the average person, without a big inheritance or a lucky lotto win, become a millionaire? Can you actually become a millionaire on an average salary? There are a lot of factors that determine whether you can save $1 million or not, including how much you can invest and how fast those investments grow. The biggest factor, however, is your age when you start saving.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Newly minted Cook County judge who refused traffic court duty quits bench – Steve Schmadeke  (DIERSEN: GAO audits IRS.  The Democrats who ran GAO’s Chicago office in 1980 did not want me to transfer from IRS to GAO. They thought that their forcing me to take an $18,847 (21%) pay cut to transfer from IRS to GAO would keep me at IRS, but they were wrong. They knew that I wanted to be assigned to audits of IRS so that I could use my knowledge of IRS that I had gained by working for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $79,563-$90,173. So to get me to go back to IRS, they succeeded in keeping me off IRS audits until the end of 1985 when the GAO manager who had hired me finally succeeded in a) getting me assigned to audits of IRS and b) promoting me to GS-13, currently $94,610. But then, in 1987, the Democrats who ran GAO’s Chicago office succeeded in forcing him to retire. At the end of 1988,  they threw me off audits of IRS and during 1989, they did everything that they could to get rid of me.  Were it not for Henry Hyde’s intervention, they might very well have succeeded.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-judge-cooke-resigns-traffic-court-met-20170428-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A new Cook County judge who for months defied orders from his supervisors to work in traffic court has resigned, according to an Illinois Supreme Court spokesman.  Richard Cooke stepped down from his $194,000-a-year post two days after a committee of 17 Cook County presiding judges voted to refer his “non-compliance with reporting to a judicial assignment” to the state agency that investigates allegations of judicial misconduct. The resignation was “effective at the end of business on Tuesday,” Chris Bonjean, a state Supreme Court spokesman, wrote in an email to the Tribune on Friday. The committee acted about a week after the Tribune began asking questions about the judge. On the same day it referred Cooke, the body also assigned Judge Jessica O’Brien, a small-claims court judge who was recently indicted on federal mortgage fraud charges, to administrative duties. His resignation means the Judicial Inquiry Board no longer has any authority over Cooke, 50, who ran unopposed in a Northwest Side subcircuit after lending his campaign an unprecedented $660,000. If the inquiry board had filed charges, Cooke could have been sanctioned or even removed from the bench.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The reasons for such killings are often varied: cartel assassins annoyed at aggressive coverage, corrupt public officials targeting critics to silence them, random violence and even reporters crossing over into the criminal worlds they cover. But according to government data, public servants like mayors and police officers have threatened journalists more often than drug cartels, petty criminals or anyone else in recent years, imperiling investigations and raising questions about the government’s commitment to exposing the culprits. Cases include journalists tortured or killed at the behest of mayors, reporters beaten by armed men in their newsrooms on the order of local officials, and police officers threatening to kill journalists for covering the news. But of the more than 800 serious cases of harassment, assault or homicide committed against journalists in the past six years, the federal office created to prosecute crimes against the freedom of expression has convicted suspects in only two.)

My mother never attended high school; she was a housewife and homemaker.  My father fought type 1 diabetes from age 14, worked in the office of a chemical plant, almost always worked second jobs to pay the family’s bills, never earned more than $40,000 a year in today’s dollars, did not buy a new car until he was 45 and it was a bottom of the line 2-door Chevy, and died suddenly in 1969 when he was 47 and I was 21. I paid for my bachelor’s degree and for new cars with money that I earned washing dishes, cleaning golf shoes, chipping slag, pumping gasoline, delivering mail, working on an automobile assemble line, and working as a security guard.  My outstanding parents provided me with room and board during my first 2 years at UIC 1966-1968, weekends during my first semester at NIU in 1969, and the summer of 1969. I graduated from NIU in August of 1970.)

WALL STREET JOURNAL
— How Trump Wants to Change Your Tax Deductions  President’s tax plan could create winners and losers – Laura Saunders  (DIERSEN: My Democrat IRS and GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were beyond furious a) that I took job-related graduate business, accounting, and finance courses while I worked for IRS and for GAO and b) that I deducted those courses. Extremely few of my Democrat IRS and GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates took job-related graduate courses. Instead, to keep their jobs and to get promoted, they helped their superiors get rid of IRS and GAO employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran, that is, they helped their superiors achieve their Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion quotas, goals, and targets.)

http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/04/intolerant-illinois-gov-rauner-encourages-prejudice-limits-to-free-speech.html
(FROM THE ARTICE: Governor Rauner today released an open letter to school districts and higher learning institutions encouraging them to proactively prevent “acts of hate” as defined by the un-elected individuals who make up the left-wing, taxpayer-funded Department of Human Rights (IDHR). “Acts of bigotry and hate have no place in our society. All of us need to come together and take the necessary measures to ensure that our schools, colleges, and universities are safe and welcoming environments for students,” said Rauner. “Our administration stands strongly with educational institutions across Illinois as they expand opportunities to prevent these acts.” In addition to suggested preventative measures for educational institutions, the Rauner Administration is pledging that IDHR, in partnership with the State Board of Education, the Illinois Community College Board, and the State Board of Higher Education, will investigate any and all reports of discriminatory acts occurring in academic settings. Administration officials recommend that institutions establish and implement policies that address those actions, ideas and speech they consider hateful, and to promote equal opportunity. “Through an ongoing collaboration, we intend to continue engagement with educational leaders and stakeholders on how to promote welcoming (read: trigger warnings) and supportive learning spaces (read: safe spaces) throughout the state,” said Secretary of Education Beth Purvis.)
