(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republican Governor Bruce Rauner is pledging to unite the fractured Republican party after winning his bitter primary battle with conservative State Representative Jeanne Ives. Rauner beat Ives by less than 20,000 votes, 51 to 48 percent, in a race that she started because of anger over Rauner’s decision to sign a law allowing for taxpayer funded abortions. Wednesday morning, Rauner told “The Big John and Ramblin’ Ray Show” on WLS that he will start a listening tour to get input from Illinois voters. “On the issues that have divided us, I want to find ways to bridge the divide. To come together, to come up with solutions that bridge the divide. We can do this, and we’ll work together in good faith.” Rauner will face Democrat J.B. Pritzker in November, after Pritzker defeated five challengers in the Democratic primary. Pritzker is expected to try and tie Rauner to the policies of Republican President Donald Trump, but Rauner, who has gone to great pains to distance himself from the President, told WLS that strategy won’t work. “People know that I’m my own person”, said Rauner. “I work with the Trump administration to help the people of Illinois just like I work with the Obama administration to help the people of Illinois. I am my own person. I make my own decisions. And all I care about is workin’ for the families of our state.” Pritzker was out early Wednesday morning thanking voters at the 95th Street Red Line stop on the South Side. He told reporters Rauner has had his chance to govern the state, and has failed. “Illinois has an important job in the next eight months and that’s to decide which direction it wants to go”, said Pritzker. “Down the road of the failed policies of Bruce Rauner, or on the road toward recovery and job creation and lowering the cost of health care, and making sure that every child gets a quality education. That’s what this campaign is gonna be all about and we’re gonna make sure people know it.” However Rauner told WLS that Pritzker has connections to what he says is corruption in the state Democratic party. “Pritzker is part of the machine. He’s part of the corruption in Illinois, he’s a tax dodger, a tax cheat, he tried to buy the Senate seat from Blagojevich, the truth is comin’ out on Pritzker and when the truth is known for the people of Illinois, they’ll choose Rauner and Sanguinetti, and they’ll choose reform so we can have a better future.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: It was Rauner who invited a primary challenge by playing social justice warrior of the left, signing a bill that put taxpayers on the hook for paying for abortions, and also signing sanctuary state legislation. Ives took the challenge, and that she came so close so quickly and with little statewide name recognition and nothing like his bankroll is a testament not only to her own message but of Rauner’s low standing among the grass-roots GOP. Democrats know this, and the bosses salivate in anticipation of November. So if Rauner has charted out a way forward to mend the intra-party rifts in the hopes of stopping Pritzker, it hasn’t been articulated. And burning Boss Madigan in rhetorical effigy day after day just won’t cut it. Ives understands the problems are about more than allegiance. “In the state of Illinois, we do not have Republican or Democrat problems,” Ives said in her concession speech. “No, we have a math problem. … “You can’t just spend yourself into oblivion, piling up millions of dollars in debt, while hundreds of thousands of people flee the state of Illinois, and think that things are going to get better the next day,” Ives said. “It’s got to stop.” But it won’t stop, not anytime soon, not with a divided Illinois Republican Party, and not with Pritzker funding the Democrats who are moving farther and farther to the left.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Cronin said he wants commission officials to attend next week’s county board meeting to answer questions about what happened. “We will make an effort to discover all the facts,” Cronin said, but someone must be held responsible. “I promise you, there’s going to be changes,” he said. “I am done with this.” Cronin said he also will continue pushing for a state law change to merge the election commission with the county clerk’s office. He has supported that concept for years, but the legislature has been reluctant to give the county permission to do it. “I look forward to the day the election commission is under the auspices of the clerk’s office,” Cronin said. “There will be accountability, better responsiveness and better professionalism — I am certain of that.” On Wednesday, election commission officials said the problem with the optical scan voting machines was caused by so-called “ender cards”– similar to paper ballots — that are needed to close the machines and tabulate results. It turns out the ender cards the commission purchased from Liberty Systems couldn’t be run through the machines. “The paper stock used by the vendor for this election was not to specification and didn’t fit through the scanner,” said Joseph Sobecki, the commission’s executive director. “That resulted in none of the locations being able to close the optical scan.” The problem didn’t affect touch-screen voting machines, but most DuPage voters use optical scan paper ballots. Once the problem was discovered, Sobecki said officials decided to bring the optical scan voting machines from every polling place to Wheaton so they could go through the closing procedure. Cronin blasted that decision. “If the cards fail, you should have a system in place to respond to that,” he said. “This notion that you are going to physically transport every one of these machines from all of the polling places and have them wait in line out in the driveways of the county complex … is just stunning to me in its level of incompetence.” Sobecki said the first machines arrived around 8:45 p.m. Meanwhile, Cronin said he was getting calls from numerous campaigns wondering where their votes were. . .The commission said “rigorous” testing was done before the election, but Zay said he doesn’t believe it. “If they tested it, it would have worked,” he said. “The problem is they have their own separate board,” Zay said, referring to the three-person panel that oversees the commission. “Maybe that board needs to go.” The three members of the bipartisan DuPage Board of Election Commissioners are appointed by Cronin. Republicans hold two of the three seats. Cronin acknowledged that election commissioners should bear responsibility. “I think there is a enough blame to go around over there,” he said. “The whole operation needs to be re-examined from top to bottom as we dissolve it.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Recently, on the same day, I received five over-size, glossy political postcards from Gov. Bruce Rauner. The cards told the most outrageous, bald-faced lies about an opponent that I have ever read. As I digested the messages, I became sick to my stomach. Rauner is being challenged by state Rep. Jeanne Ives for the GOP nomination for governor, at the March 20 Republican primary election. I do not favor either candidate. Ives is too conservative for me, and Rauner is, well, a bald-faced liar. And, apparently, not embarrassed or shamed a whit about his lying to the voters. The messages say that Ives, among other dastardly deeds: Is the lackey of Democratic Speaker of the Illinois House Mike Madigan Wants to keep the recent increase in the income tax and Opposes cutting property taxes Thee anti-Ives statements are “supported” by citations of roll call votes and quotations found in newspapers. Shamefully, the above claims by Rauner represent lying by the ploy of excerpting snippets from larger statements to reverse the meaning. For example, in Henry IV, Shakespeare has Dick the Butcher declare: ”The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.” Sounds like an attack on lawyers. Yet, in the full context, Butcher thought if he disturbed law and order, he could become king. Thus, Shakespeare meant the famous line as a compliment to attorneys and judges who instill justice in society. That is what Rauner and his consultants have done. Reverse the meaning. Red becomes green; night, day. Indeed, Ives is as anti-Madigan, anti-tax (of any kind) as they come. Respected publications, such as Crain’s Chicago Business, columnist Scott Reeder and others, already have called out Rauner for his lying. We also must note Democrat Madigan, Rauner’s nemesis, has been using misleading attack ads against GOP opponents for years. I still stifle a rueful chuckle when I recall an ad in which Madigan minions charged a GOP opponent for consorting with sex perverts. This was so because the Republican rented an apartment to someone who had years earlier been convicted of some sex crime. Political campaigning has been rough and tumble since the early days of the Republic, when Federalists passed the Alien and Sedition Act. The law allowed President John Adams to jail to newspaper editors and others who criticized him, which he did with gusto. Today, billionaires flaunt limitless campaign spending as they assault untutored voters with lies and misleading half-truths that are laughable to insiders. Why do they do this? Because it works. In my day, half a century ago, candidates generally stuck to making positive statements about themselves, leaving their opponents alone. Not today, obviously. I blame the political consultants. They are paid to win, period. Not to win fairly, honestly, nor with substantive arguments. But simply to win. Win-at-any-cost consultants disgust me. They lurk in the background of campaigns, holding in contempt the voters they deceive. Consultants have found that voters — their cynicism probably ingrained by endless attack ads courtesy of those same consultants — tend to believe the worst about candidates today. Of course, candidates don’t have to accept the advice from consultants that they mislead the public about their opponents. Yet, too many candidates want to win so badly they accept the “wisdom” of their consultants, and thus often spend most of their money on the attack. Legitimate criticism of an opponent is fair game, of course, and helpful to voters. But outright lying? Come on. If we — you and I — don’t call out bald-faced lying, things will only get worse, if such is possible. At the national level, PolitiFact uses volunteers and donations to call out misrepresentation and lies. I propose at the state and local level in Illinois we create a simple Code of Ethics for Political Campaigns: “I will neither lie nor mislead voters about my opponents.” Then we ask all candidates to sign the pledge. Those who fail to sign the pledge, or break it, would be publicly rebuked. Those who sign and keep to the pledge would be publicly commended. The ideal group to implement a Code of Ethics would be the nonprofit Illinois Campaign for Political Reform. But they would need lots of volunteer help. Pollyannaish? Sure, but we could use some Jimmy Stewart (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) politics in our democracy. So, to be charitable, let’s not kill all the political consultants, appealing as the thought might be. Instead, let’s call out those consultants and candidates who lie and mislead.)

Sessions announced the decision in a statement just before 10 p.m., noting that both the Justice Department inspector general and the FBI office that handles discipline had found “that Mr. McCabe had made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor — including under oath — on multiple occasions.” He said based on those findings and the recommendation of the department’s senior career official, “I have terminated the employment of Andrew McCabe effective immediately.” The move will likely cost McCabe a significant portion of his retirement benefits, though it is possible he could bring a legal challenge. He responded on Friday night with a lengthy statement, claiming he was being targeted because he was a witness in special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s probe into whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia and asserting that his actions were appropriate. He also alleged former FBI Director James B. Comey knew about the media disclosure about which the inspector general has raised questions. “This attack on my credibility is one part of a larger effort not just to slander me personally, but to taint the FBI, law enforcement, and intelligence professionals more generally,” McCabe said. “It is part of this Administration’s ongoing war on the FBI and the efforts of the Special Counsel investigation, which continue to this day. Their persistence in this campaign only highlights the importance of the Special Counsel’s work.” Trump tweeted early Saturday morning, “Andrew McCabe FIRED, a great day for the hard working men and women of the FBI – A great day for Democracy. Sanctimonious James Comey was his boss and made McCabe look like a choirboy. He knew all about the lies and corruption going on at the highest levels of the FBI!” An email notifying McCabe of the move was sent to his work account and his lawyers just minutes before Sessions’s statement was made public, though McCabe learned of the firing from press accounts, his spokeswoman said. Any law to protect journalists as a special class needs to define who is a journalist, and this leaves an opening for the government to start making judgement calls about who is not a journalist. While the definition adopted in the bill is fairly broad, and would encompass freelancers and all kinds of media, there are still concerns about defining who is and who is not a reporter. This is especially true because 31 of the 44 attacks documented on the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker occurred during protests. As more livestreamers and citizen journalists show up at protests, it can be tricky, even for press freedom groups, to determine who to count as a journalist. The government is often far more conservative. In December, federal prosecutors tried photojournalist and livestreamer Alexei Wood on chargers of riot, conspiracy, and destruction of property. Even though Wood’s video footage from the day shows that he took no part in any vandalism, the prosecution tried to make the entire case about whether he was a journalist or not. The definitional issue exists with other legislation to protect reporters. A shield bill, for instance, would also require the government to define journalists. This was one of the major areas of debate in 2013 when there was serious energy to put in place a bill protecting journalists from federal subpoenas that would require them to divulge their sources. In the end legislation is always about weighing the costs versus the benefits. In the context of an attorney general who claims to have 27 open leak investigations and wants to make it easier to subpoena reporters, a shield law would at least have immediate concrete benefits to weigh against potential drawbacks. The Journalist Protection Act is an effort in the right direction, and there is an argument that it could serve as a useful global model. The diagnosis of increased hostility bleeding into physical threats is spot on, given what we’ve seen in the data. However, Swalwell’s proposed legislation would not offer journalists any material benefit, even as it would allow the federal government to define who is and who is not a journalist. In the current climate, that may not be a worthwhile tradeoff.)

His legal experience, independence and willingness to engage with conservative grassroots activists speaks volumes. Unfortunately, Harold has avoided publicly answering questions from conservative organizations, including failing to respond to candidate surveys from pro-life organizations in the state. It is frustrating to observe her answer questions from liberal media sources but refuse to answer questions (and questionnaires) from pro-life and pro-family groups. Their differences were dramatically different when they were asked about defending unconstitutional and tyrannical Illinois laws that force medical professionals to give abortion referrals (SB 1564) or ban professional therapists from helping minor children with unwanted same-sex attraction or gender confusion (HB 217). Even after pointing out that the next Attorney General will take an oath to defend the U.S. Constitution and Illinois State Constitution, Harold said she would defend the laws of the state whereas Grasso indicated that he did not think those laws were constitutional. Moreover, it is troubling to read or hear her interviews in the media (WBEZ for example) and listen to her give politically correct or even liberal responses to questions. The Chicago Sun-Times reported last month that Harold “believes Illinois should start ‘exploring’ [marijuana] legalization.” In the WBEZ interview, Harold waves the white flag of surrender, saying that she believes that recreational marijuana is “inevitable.” Finally, the fact that Harold has aligned herself with Bruce Rauner and his campaign apparatus is indicative of the establishment politics we’ve come to loathe in Illinois. We simply do not need another squishy establishment type in the Illinois GOP. Please make every effort to cast your ballot on or before March 20th to ensure that the best candidates are nominated. Bruce Rauner’s budget address next week, the Civic Federation is again calling for taxing some retirement income and extending the state sales tax to some services as part of its proposal to stabilize state finances. The Civic Federation, which is a watchdog over state finances, said the budget passed last summer to end the two-year budget impasse meant the state “was no longer careening toward unprecedented financial disaster.” “However, our elected officials again relied on shaky financial practices for short-term relief, such as counting on dubious one-time revenues and repeatedly kicking the pension can down the road,” said Federation president Laurence Msall in a statement. “Such actions only make achieving sound financial footing more difficult.” The Civic Federation compiled a list of 11 steps it believes the state should follow to reestablish the state’s financial health. Number one on the list is limiting annual spending growth to 2.1 percent for the next five years at a minimum. The group recommended other cost control measures like cutting the interest rate the state pays on overdue bills, consolidating government units and creating a commission to explore consolidating governance of state universities. Other recommendations will be more difficult, Msall acknowledged. The organization said the state should impose the income tax on the same retirement income that is taxed at the federal level. For example, there is a federal income tax on 401(k) distributions, but Illinois does not tax them. Imposing that tax has been a third rail in Illinois politics. Also, the report calls for a constitutional amendment to be placed on the ballot “to clarify the pension protection clause.” That clause prevents lawmakers from enacting cuts to pensions of current public employees. The report recommends extending the sales tax to 14 services that are also taxed in Wisconsin, such as landscaping and internet services. The federation also is calling for a new capital construction bill that would be financed by an increase in the gasoline tax. Rauner will deliver his budget speech on Wednesday.)

More than 900 party members, leaders and politicians showed up for the event at the Bank of Springfield Center to hear special guest Jeanine Pirro, host of Fox News’ “Justice with Judge Jeanine” program, and Gov. Bruce Rauner. Rauner said the main goal for Republicans this year is to defeat longtime Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, calling him a machine politician who was destroying the state. “It is a cancer that is eating us from the inside, sucking our vitality, sucking our quality of life to enrich himself and his friends inside government,” Rauner said. The governor focused on themes he has mentioned throughout his campaign: restoring economic success in Illinois and lowering taxation. He made a specific promise to fight a Democratic proposal for a progressive income tax, which would tax residents based upon their income level. “It ain’t progressive. It’s a destructive income tax hike that they want to put on the people of Illinois,” he said. “I will block that and make sure that our income taxes stay flat and low and actually down lower from where they are today and bring ’em back down to 3 percent over the next two years.” Pirro, meanwhile, focused on national issues. She praised the first year of President Donald Trump as a major improvement over Barack Obama and the rule of the Democratic Party, which she said was corrupt. She compared Trump to a maverick politician for doing things outside of norm for politicians. “He said things that weren’t politically correct, and he said things that weren’t considered acceptable,” she said. “But the forgotten men and women of this country heard him. And here we are one year later, with a resounding economy, with ISIS crushed in the Middle East, with unemployment at a 40-year low.” While acknowledging the stock market had taken downturn recently, she said Trump’s presidency has been a success thus far. Pirro said, however, there were still issues for the country to confront, specifically the FBI. She claimed the nation’s top law enforcement agency may have been politically biased and tried to ensure Trump’s 2016 opponent, Hillary Clinton, became president. She said the situation “absolutely scares the hell out me.” She said the picture started to become clear with former FBI director James Comey not indicting Clinton over managing classified documents on a private email server. She said she believes Comey wanted Clinton to become president and was hiding information from her and may also have been covering for Obama. “It’s time for James Comey to be the target of an active criminal investigation,” she said. She then cited the Russian uranium deal, made under Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State, as another case that should be investigated, claiming a number of Washington politicians were working together to defend each other. According to Pirro, Robert Mueller, who is investigating allegations of Russia’s involvement in the 2016 presidential election, is among them. She claimed Mueller was out for revenge over not becoming FBI director when Comey was removed last year and instead collaborated with Republican Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to investigate Trump. “Rosenstein needed Mueller to be there. Comey needed Mueller to be there, because they were all involved in a case that involves the sale of the uranium,” she said. She likened the whole investigation to an attempt to overthrow the government and highlighted it as a reason for Republicans to make sure they vote in 2018. “The 2018s are gonna be tough. They’re gonna be real tough,” she said. “You better get ready for this. I don’t care if you walk house to house, use social media, tweet, text, email, get the millennials involved, go to the old age homes. Whatever you gotta do you gotta get out there.” Rauner said he was confident that 2018 would be successful. “All of us worked hard last year. 2016 — even though President Trump, unfortunately, lost Illinois by over 16 points — we in Illinois picked up six seats in the General Assembly for the Republicans in 2016,” he said. “And you watch, this year, this is our year. We are going to take it to the Madigan machine of corruption and cronyism. We are going to run a great slate of candidates this November, and we are going to win nine (House) seats and knock Mike Madigan out as speaker of the House.”)

David Cox, who represents about 700,000 workers for the federal government and District of Columbia. “Basically it wipes out due process rights for employees.” Another pillar of the proposal would reduce automatic pay increases and instead use that money for a performance bonus pool. Under the current system, federal employees get a review every one to three years. Employees whose performance is “fully successful” — as 99.7% are — get a within-grade “step” increase in addition to annual cost-of-living increases. Trump’s plan would stretch out the amount of time it takes to go from step 1 to step 10 from 18 years to 27 years, saving $10 billion over the next decade, officials said. That money would then go to high-performing employees either as merit raises or one-time bonuses. The 26-foot conversion vehicle will be outfitted with a number of features to allow veterinary services to be provided at remote locations, similar to a bookmobile or bloodmobile. “This is going to be a game-changer that allows us to save more animals and better serve the community,” said Dr. Barbara Hanek, administrator veterinarian. With ongoing concerns about pet overpopulation, a mobile spay and neuter vehicle can serve low-income residents who may not have the ability to drive to the animal care facility at the county campus in Wheaton. “Also, our spay and neuter program is free of charge for DuPage residents who qualify,” said Kristie Lecaros, humane initiatives and special projects manager. Valued at $250,000, the van is made possible by a donation from the Brooks McCormick Jr. Trust for Animal Rights Law and Policy, which will be honored at the Feb. 27 county board meeting. “We’re an open admission shelter in the county,” said Brian Krajewski, chairman of the board’s animal care and control committee. “That means we take in every animal and try to find them a home. But we also do education, and this new van will help us to get out to many events, highlight animal rescues, and help us do some medical procedures like feral fixes, where we spay and neuter, microchip and vaccinate for rabies.” Free spay and neutering is available for all pets in DuPage County households where the owner has an Illinois LINK card that indicates low-income assistance. Officials said the van will be delivered in May. One side of it opens to reveal cages that may contain pets available for immediate adoption. Inside, the van will have two surgical tables, countertop work space and veterinary pharmacy supplies. “It’s also going to have a dental unit and an x-ray machine,” Hanek said. “We don’t even have an x-ray machine here at the main building. That’s a $50,000 piece of equipment right there.” The donation of $300,000 and a statement were facilitated by volunteer Amanda Yancey. “The Brooks McCormick Jr. Trust for Animal Rights Law and Policy is a progressive think-tank for national animal welfare,” the donor wrote. “… Amanda has seen the improvements at DuPage County Animal Care & Control. To further the momentum, the exciting possibility of a specialty veterinary vehicle is seen as revolutionary for the animals of DuPage and beyond.” Hanek said veterinary medicine at shelters has shifted from a philosophy of addressing overpopulation with euthanasia “to now using more proactive measures like targeted spaying and neutering. That’s what this new van will help us do.” Hanek met with Kane County animal control officials who demonstrated the use of geo-coding to map locations throughout the county prone to feral and stray animals. “From that data, we can then determine the most effective areas where we can target our spay and neuter van,” Hanek said. “We want to be more proactive to provide our services in the areas where they’re needed.” A veterinary surgeon has been designated for the van, which will travel to a remote location at least once a week, officials said. “We should be able to do up to 30 spays and neuters per day,” Hanek said. “It all depends on the amount of time, whether it’s neutering a male cat versus spaying a large dog.” All pets under treatment are implanted with a microchip to identify the animal and the owner. Walk-ins may obtain microchips for their pets for $30. The goal is for police departments to be able to scan a chip and return the animal to its owner. “We also are very indebted to other rescue groups that have helped us in the past,” Hanek said. “With the new vehicle, we now can come out and do procedures for them. The whole idea is to fill a void for pet owners who can’t afford veterinary care and to lessen the burden on the animal shelter system.” DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin is an animal enthusiast who has two dogs, two cats and a horse, all spayed and neutered. “I think this is a great idea,” he said. “You’ve got to take the services to the neighborhoods, which is a much more effective way to get to the overpopulation of feral cats and other animals, particularly low-income areas. I encourage all the residents to participate and start looking out for the van.”)
