When asked about work complaints, students who were interviewed for this article mentioned their employers didn’t offer breaks, regularly shortened break time, disregarded previous schedule agreements and required them to work shifts less than 12 hours apart. How does this impact a student’s academic success and what can be done to help the current state of labor laws? These conditions may seem unfair or even illegal; however, these issues are completely acceptable under Texas law as Texas does not require that employers offer breaks, strictly stick to agreed work schedules or give workers fair time between shifts. Bachtell and Cresco are participating in a pilot program to widen medical marijuana access for Illinois patients seeking alternatives to opioid use. Current state law prohibits marijuana to treat general pain, making it inaccessible for some patients using prescription opioids. “We worked with the administration, the prior administration, over the last 24 months to really create a new law, utilizing data that was coming out of a lot of existing markets, showing this correlation between greater access to cannabis and reduced opioid use,” Bachtell said. “I think it’s a large market, but more importantly an important market.” According to BDS Analytics CEO Roy Bingham, U.S. medical marijuana sales are projected to increase from $4.5 billion in 2018 to $7.4 billion in 2021, though recreational use sales are expected to fuel the majority of market growth. Bingham said during an NCIA conference panel presentation Tuesday that U.S. recreational sales of $6 billion in 2018 are projected to reach $11 billion in 2021. ‘A very broad and diverse community’ Cultivators, manufacturers, bankers and retailers are not the only profiles getting an overhaul within the cannabis industry. It’s consumers, as well. “It’s not the stoner that lives in his mom’s basement,” Bingham said, noting the average age of cannabis consumers is now 40. “And there is no one cannabis consumer. It’s a very broad and very diverse community.” States that have legalized recreational cannabis are taking notice of the changing demographics and interest from investors, yet so far have insufficient data to push federal regulators to a national legalization vote. Steven Hoffman, chairman of Massachusetts’s Cannabis Control Commission, said Massachusetts is both learning from states that legalized before, as well as passing along information about its own framework to states like New York and New Jersey. (FROM THE LETTER: How much further will Illinois go to become the “most progressive state” on abortion, as Gov. J.B. Pritzker has declared? The Illinois governor was certainly proud to take the lead as most progressive by funding abortions using taxpayer dollars. Yet Pritzker was quickly overshadowed by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who signed a bill allowing abortions up to nine months and removing other legal protections for the unborn. For this, Cuomo earned thunderous applause from the state’s legislative body, and even New York Cardinal Dolan is afraid to excommunicate Cuomo. Then Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam defended the killing of a child after the child was born that would have been allowed by a bill proposed in his state’s legislature, but then clarified his statement to indicate that he was talking about children who had been born with severe abnormalities or for reasons of the mother’s mental health in the 40th week, as if that makes it acceptable to kill any child that has been born. What will Gov. Pritzker do to maintain IL as the “most progressive state”? Infanticide up to 2 years old, for any reason? Abortion has always been about killing the infants. That should be obvious to all who have been watching these states try to “one-up” each other to become the most progressive. The good people of Illinois must stand up against this evil.)
