(FROM THE ARTICLE: During Chicago Left in Review’s episode a week before the Republican State Central Committee (“SCC”) election of a new Republican State GOP Chairman in Springfield on January 15, 2005 and during its shows that followed over the last two weeks after the election—the host and his panel chose to ignore the event. Not a mention– nothing, nada, zero, zip. The event attracted about 500 Republican activists, operatives, party functionaries, office holders and wannabees– including more than 150 County, Ward and Township Committeemen; State GOP Chairman candidates Andy McKenna, Jr., Steve McGlynn, Jim Oberweis, John Cox and Jim Nalepa. Andy McKenna, Jr., who is known for his father’s and perhaps his own fundraising prowess and business contacts and who ran in the Republican U. S. Senate Primary in 2004, garnering 14% and a 4th out of 7 candidates finish, won the State GOP chairmanship vote, primarily because of the backing of the Illinois Republican Party Finance Committee, i.e., in large part the Chicago Metropolitan Republican Business Interests and Donors. McGlynn, who had campaigned vigorously for the position, withdrew prior to the vote when he saw he could not get a majority of the SCC weighted vote. Nalepa, who drew acclaim and cheers from the assembled for his stirring speech, came in a very distant second to McKenna– who, in addition to the aforementioned money interests, had the New Republican Establishment behind him– Lahood-Kirk, for sure, and most likely Cross. Of course, the New Republican Establishment and money interests go together like ham and cheese.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: McKenna Takes ‘The Titanic’ There really was no surprise when the State Central Committee of the Illinois Republican Party met in Springfield January (15) to elect a new party chairman. Although more than 500 county party leaders, GOP activists, and reporters jammed the Renaissance Hotel, the chairmanship was being decided by just the 19 SCC members–all of whom had weighted votes–in executive session. Thus, while Chicago businessman and onetime GOP U.S. House hopeful Jim Nalepa held the crowd spellbound with his presentation and his call for beginning the meeting with the under-attack Pledge of Allegiance, the SCC gave 86% of its votes to rival Andy McKenna, Jr. and made him chairman. (Two other contenders, state Vice Chairman Steve McGlynn and Cook County GOP Chairman Gary Skoien, withdrew before the vote). The chief executive officer of the Schwarz Paper Co. and third-place finisher in the Republican Senate primary last year, McKenna is considered a strong conservative who makes no bones about his pro-life stance. His position is in sharp contrast to that of the outgoing chairman (and lone GOPer in statewide office), Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, long criticized by party conservatives. A successful businessman and proven fund-raiser (he raised more than $2 million for his Senate bid), McKenna is also light years removed from the old statehouse gang of Republicans who are presently targets of corruption probes. Asked by reporters about how the Illinois GOP–which lost both a Senate and U.S. House seat last fall as well as the state’s electoral votes–could withstand the racketeering trial of former Republican Gov. (1998-2002) George Ryan, the chairman-elect replied: “The people in the Ryan trial are not part of this party.” Although many conservatives praised McKenna as a fresh leader, others were critical of his failure so far to denounce the Democratic machine of Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley or to hint that he would fire any of the Topinka staff at state party headquarters. Many conservatives do not like the selective, back-room mechanism for choosing a chairman, convinced that had a new state convention been called with delegates more representative of the party grass-roots, Nalepa and his magnetic speaking style would have carried the day. Jack Roeser, head of the conservative Renew Illinois group, led a delegation to Springfield to demand that the SCC refuse to elect a chairman and that a new convention be called for this task. Prior to the vote, Roeser hinted to me that he and his allies on the right might well pursue a change of the party rules to permit such a convention and a vote on party officers–especially on Roeser’s longtime arch-enemy, Republican National Committeeman Robert Kjellander. As for Nalepa, Chicago political strategist Bill Pascoe told me that Nalepa’s remarks “wowed the crowd” and that his “moving around the room with a microphone, Elizabeth Dole-style, was visually riveting.” Pascoe noted that the former U.S. Army ranger was unrecognized by most Republicans two months ago. “But after this campaign for chairman,” he added, “there are a number of leading Republicans trying to figure out how to put Jim Nalepa to good use for a party in desperate need of new leadership.” Hinting strongly that the runner-up would yet have his day in the sun, Illinois political blogger par excellence Jeff Berkowitz concluded: “Andy McKenna, Jr., was elected this afternoon. … Jim Nalepa, who won the hearts and minds of many in the one hour or so public portion of the Republican State Central Committee meeting, came in second. …”)

Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet). The first step in the legal action is expected to be an appeal to the Illinois State Board of Elections, which under law, must certify the votes in party elections. Among other charges, Winchester is expected to challenge the use of votes by acclamation in some counties — a move that gives the candidate with more than half of the votes the entire final tally, which violates party rules and may violate state law. Republican sources said that the Republican Party put up Chapin to run against the incumbent Winchester as punishment for his backing Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) in the Republican primary against Gov. Bruce Rauner. Winchester, who could not be reached for comment, also opposes the re-election of GOP Chairman Tim Schneider. The party’s 18 central committee people, one representing each congressional district, is scheduled to meet May 19 to elect a state chairman, and sources say that Schneider’s re-election bid is in jeopardy. Mark Shaw, Lake County Republican chairman and central committeeman in the 10th Congressional District, said that people should not jump to conclusions about the outcome of the race between Winchester and Rose. “Just because the party said Chapin won doesn’t mean he won,” Shaw said. “Until May 19, there is no party governing board, and Chaplin can’t just show up on that day and act like he’s a committeeman. The results have to be certified first, and I expect the board will find a lot of irregularities in the voting process.” He added that he knows Winchester as a man of “integrity and honesty” and he would not be taking legal action unless he was convinced that election law procedures were violated. Results of the election show that Winchester received zero votes in nine of 33 counties, including four of the 10 most populated, a result that Shaw and others said would be impossible. Several counties, sources said, failed to even offer Winchester as a candidate for consideration. In Fayette County, home to Randy Pollard, Rauner’s downstate director, Winchester was not presented as an option. “Pollard asked for a voice vote by acclamation for Chapin (Rose) and just moved on,” a source said. “He didn’t even mention Winchester was a candidate, much less the incumbent.” Rose also received zero votes in 13 counties carried 100 percent by Winchester. In all, 22 of 33 counties voted by acclamation, representing 63 percent of Rose’s vote and 59 percent of Winchester’s. County votes are weighted based on their respective turnout in the March primary. Republican sources also said that aides to U.S. Rep. John Shimkus (R-Collinsville) recruited Rose to challenge Winchester, offering to help him replace Shimkus in Congress when the opportunity presents itself.)

Governor Rauner and Lieutenant Governor Sanguinetti are touring Europe and the state, respectively, to seek answers on vocational and training programs for Illinois youth. YouthBuild Mclean County in Central Illinois is one program close to home that is currently fulfilling the requirements. “Many decades ago our school system used to offer apprenticeship tracks”, said Lt. Governor Sanguinetti. “Over time we lost that… We need to bring back those types of programs to Illinois.” Governor Rauner is currently in Germany at an apprenticeship program learning the ways of the system and how it functions. Sanguinetti says that a four year program is not for everyone and allowing our youth the right to choose what they want to do at an early age will be more beneficial to their future. “For many of our youth, access and opportunity is not looking very bright,” said Sanguinetti. She went on to say “a place like YouthBuild gives them the tools that they will need to succeed in life in a non traditional way.”)

That pitiful number raises an intriguing question: Is Amazon a high-paying tech company or a low-wage retailer? “Both” is the obvious answer, but to this Amazon aficionado that answer is incomplete. The pay figure, which was disclosed for the first time in Amazon’s annual proxy statement, reflects the large number of low-paid retail and warehouse employees who work for the company. The proxy also disclosed that Bezos was paid $1.68 million, making the ratio of what Bezos was paid and the median pay 59-to-1. What does that ratio tell us? Really, not very much. Bezos, according to the proxy, had a 2017 compensation of $81,840 in salary. The rest was in the form of perks, much of it for “security arrangements” and travel. But Bezos’s pay, which seems rather modest when stacked up against the obscene earnings of many other corporate chiefs, is almost irrelevant. That’s because Bezos is the world’s wealthiest person, with a fortune now estimated at $129 billion (depending upon what Amazon stock is trading at this moment). So that ratio, although accurate, means next to nothing. If you really want to understand the gap between CEO and worker, consider instead the ratio between the net worth of the boss and his employees: I did, and it’s beyond measure. Seriously, 100 billion-to-1 is not an outlandish estimate.)

If you think about it, even devoted democrats draw the line somewhere on ballot box access: The right to vote is generally denied to prisoners, children, noncitizens, and people judged mentally incompetent. But imagine the envy and anger that would be unleashed if voting power were based on profession or education. Who would decide how to divide the public into first-, second-, and third-class citizens? Would biology professors be certified as “highly qualified” but high school history teachers ranked “standard qualified”? What about journalists vs. carpenters vs. actors vs. the unemployed? And how much of the public would be consigned to the lowest tier of “unqualified” voters—would it be 1 percent or 10 percent or more? Our new national security adviser, John Bolton, was born on the same day in 1948 as Weyman Cook, Jerry Miller, and Richard Lassiter, whose own chances for future achievements ended when they were killed in Vietnam. Their common birthday was Nov. 20, number 185 in the 1969 draft lottery, which was based on date of birth and ended student deferments—such as the one Bolton had until then enjoyed at Yale. He might well have been called up, as the draft went up to 195, but he managed to get a spot in the Maryland National Guard and then a local Army reserve unit. The Guard and the Reserves had long waiting lists, as they offered a way to avoid being sent to Vietnam. “I confess I had no desire to die in a Southeast Asian rice paddy,” Bolton wrote in his Yale 25th reunion class book. “I considered the war in Vietnam already lost.” Instead, Bolton went to Yale Law School, interning in the summer for the stridently pro-war Vice President Spiro Agnew, who told everybody that the fight in Vietnam was progressing far better than the effete media suggested. The married 20-year-old from Corinth, Mississippi, miraculously survived and stepped away unhurt. He could have just stood there with his whole young life before him. But a number of comrades were trapped in the burning wreckage and in his last minutes he demonstrated that he possessed the stuff of greatness. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Rosanna Pulido was nearly unknown in Springfield until last fall when she emerged as the strongest citizen voice opposing the city council resolution to make Springfield a “Welcoming City.” The resolution is positive, progressive and innocuous, with phrases like, “the City of Springfield is committed to continue building a neighborly and welcoming atmosphere in our community, where all are welcome, accepted and appreciated.” But to Pulido, there is nothing innocuous about opening the city’s doors to immigrants and refugees, who she equates with “illegal aliens.” Her arguments that the resolution would be a foot in the door leading to all kinds of harm, from increased crime to increased costs for public services, helped persuade aldermen to table the resolution on a 7-3 vote, with Mayor Jim Langfelder, the son of an immigrant, announcing his opposition as well. She is well known nationally for her past anti-immigrant activism in Chicago. Pulido has only recently become vocal in Springfield, where she moved three years ago. She had spent several years caring for her parents in their final years – first her mother until her death, then her father. After the death of her father, who lived in Texas, she accepted the offer of a friend for whom she had been maid of honor to stay at her home in LaSalle County while she was deciding what to do next. Pulido found peace and quiet there, then moved to Springfield. She speaks of wanting to retire, perhaps from activism, but still has some fight left, now that the national mood seems headed in her direction. “I love Donald Trump,” she says. “He’s with me on immigration. I’ve been battling that since 2003 – fighting, fighting, fighting. Now I see a ray of hope.” In 2001 a friend who was police chief helped her land a job as police dispatcher in Northfield, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago. She was appalled when a police detective brought in four different fake IDs, each one slightly different, from a crime suspect who had been arrested. “That opened my eyes to what was going on,” she said. Soon there was a movement to “give driver’s licenses to illegal aliens” and she became active in the fight against that. In 2005 she joined the national group the Minuteman Project in its gathering of some 1,200 volunteers on the Arizona-Mexico border for a citizens patrol to prevent Mexicans from illegally crossing into the U.S. Upon her return she organized an Illinois chapter of the Minutemen. The Minuteman Project has been called a “hate group” for its zeal in the fight against undocumented immigrants. Is it a hate group? “We’re all just regular people,” Pulido says. Over the years she’s associated with other groups accused of being hate groups, including the Federation for American Immigration Reform, for which she is now state adviser. Labeling groups as hate groups is “the way they do things now,” she says. “Everything is blown out of proportion. I’m not going to worry about it.” She then names several left-leaning groups that oppose her point of view. “They’re hate groups. They’re anti-American. They want to change America and our way of life.” Much of Pulido’s public record of controversial statements comes from her 2009 run for Congress as the Republican nominee in the special election to fill the seat vacated by Rahm Emanuel, a race she lost to Democrat Mike Quigley. The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights has listed her statements on two fact sheets titled, “The Real Hate in the Debate.” “They hate me,” she says of ICIRR. But she doesn’t deny the statements the group attributes to her, one of which is an off-color joke about gays she had posted on the internet before she began her political campaign. “I made a joke about gays,” she tells me in our interview. “I’m not perfect. I’m going to screw up. I make mistakes.” She says her joke was brought up at a campaign appearance at a gay bar. “I told them I did it, and if I offended anybody I’m sorry. The whole gay bar stood up and gave me a standing ovation.” In Chicago she accused the Catholic church of deliberately luring illegal immigrants to support Catholic social programs. “If the church succeeds in their mission, they will destroy the United States of America,” she said in testimony to an Illinois House committee. “That’s absolutely true,” she says now, while insisting she is not anti-Catholic, having attended a Catholic grade school and an all-girls Catholic high school. No longer Catholic, she is now an evangelical Christian, but she admires her father for remaining a staunch Catholic to the end. She also had posted a comment about Muslims praying. “It reminds me of my dog, smelling butts,” she wrote in 2003. She apologized for that also during the campaign. “Because I’m human. I make mistakes.” She said conservatives make jokes among themselves that may not be appropriate for a wider audience. “If I were with other Hispanics, I could make jokes about Hispanics,” she told me. I asked her if she is a bigot. “I’m a Mexican,” she replies. “I can’t be bigoted.” Pulido often refers to her Mexican heritage, though she was born in Chicago and her parents were both born in Texas. When I asked in an email how far back are her Mexican roots, her reply said in part, “We’re all immigrants from somewhere,” with a clip of President Bill Clinton in 1995 saying it is wrong for a “nation of immigrants” to permit abuse of immigration laws. In Springfield, Pulido may get her second wind. “I’m not afraid to speak out,” she says. “I am not afraid.”)

Some observers wonder how the Orange County Board of Supervisors can sue the state when, in fact, California counties are mere subdivisions of the state. Specifically, how can Orange County sue when the very actions the Trump administration wants to implement in California have been ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge? The Los Angeles Times: “A federal judge in Los Angeles has ruled that police departments violate the Constitution if they detain inmates at the request of immigration agents…U.S. District Judge Andre Birotte Jr. found that…the constitutional rights of inmates who were kept in custody at the behest of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers (their rights were violated)…police cannot legally honor such detainer requests from ICE…‘officers have no authority to arrest individuals for civil immigration offenses, and thus, detaining individuals beyond their date for release violated the individuals’ Fourth Amendment rights.” So, what is Orange County up to? She embedded videos from the biggest YouTubers on the platform on the site, including massive creator Casey Neistat. In them, they talk about the YouTube “Ad-apocalypse” where many users are seeing massive dips in traffic, subscriber count loss, and de-monetization of videos. Neistat has more than 9,000,000 subscribers and made a famous video about the YouTube ad revenue scare for creators. It appears that Aghdam was disgruntled by the changes in the YouTube platform. She wrote on her website, “Be aware! Dictatorship exists in all countries but with different tactics! They only care for personal and short-term profits and do anything to reach their goals even by fooling simple-minded people, hiding the truth, manipulating science and everything, putting public mental and physical health at risk, abusing non-human animals, polluting the environment, destroying family values, promoting materialism and sexual degeneration in the name of freedom and turning people into programmed robots!” She goes on to quote Adolf Hitler saying, “Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it and eventually they will believe it.” The rest of her message targets YouTube and censorship. “There is no free speech in the real world and you will be suppressed for telling the truth that is not supported by the system. Videos of targeted users are filtered and merely relegated so that people can hardly see their videos.” Aghdam’s website shows screenshots of her “reduced” and “supressed” videos. She referred to a specific video that appeared to be an instructional video for a workout saying, “This video got age-restricted after new, close-minded YouTube employees got control of my farsi YouTube channel last year, 2016, and began filtering my videos to reduce views and suppress and discourage me from making my videos!” Feb. 20, YouTube enacted a new advertising policy that demonetized channels with less than 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of watch time.
