How long have you owned a computer system? I have owned a computer system since 1982 when I was 34 years old. While I worked for GAO during the 1990s, before GAO provided its staff with computer systems, I bought several computer systems and used them in my office. I published Milton Township Republican Central Committee’s (MTRCC) first website in 2000 and served as MTRCC’s webmaster 2000-2004 and 2008-2010. https://www.times-standard.com/2019/05/26/career-corner-seeking-digital-natives/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: This term makes sense at first. But, the definition of a digital native, according to Dictionary.com, is “a person born or brought up during the age of digital technology and therefore familiar with computers and the internet from an early age.” Those who are turning forty this year probably started to use the internet around 1995, when they were sophomores in high school — if they were lucky. That was in the time of the dial-up modem and America Online. Their parents were ahead of the game to have a home computer then. In all likelihood, they really began to use computers when they went to college. It should be noted that I’m omitting early Mac computers and things like Atari for the purposes of this column. I’m talking about the real-deal internet. Digital natives had the internet in elementary school or middle school. Wikipedia says digital natives “are often used to describe the digital gap in terms of the ability of technological use among people born from 1980 onward and those born before.” By this definition, a digital native would be 38 years old or younger today. Let that soak in. A job description that specifically requests that someone is 38 years old or less. Why does this happen? I don’t have the answer for you. I’d like to know this myself. I thought that the idea of a job posting was to hire someone with a certain skillset rather than a certain age. I also heard this rumor that discriminating on the basis of age when hiring is not allowed. In fact, I think there may be something called the Age Discrimination in Employment Act.)

BUSINESS NEWS DAILY
— How Can You Tell if a Job Candidate Is Lying About Their Credentials? – Adam C. Uzialko
https://www.businessnewsdaily.com/11314-background-check-candidate-credentials.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When employers don’t want to conduct candidate verification themselves or feel it would be better handled by a professional third party, there are background check services. These companies are available to screen candidates, usually for a per-candidate fee, and provide background check reports for the employer’s review. Background checks generally review criminal history at the federal and state level, as well as verify past employment and educational attainment. “Manual verification of job candidates, especially in high-volume situations, may be impractical,” Chancey said. “For best results, employers should consider partnering with a reliable background screening vendor. Look for a vendor whose screening platform is easy to use and takes out the hassle of verifying multiple candidates, integrates with other HR systems such as the applicant tracking system, and whose capabilities can be customized to the needs of your organization.”)

AMERICAN GREATNESS
— President Trump Can Win on Race – Karin McQuillan
https://amgreatness.com/2019/05/20/president-trump-can-win-on-race/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The good news for President Trump is that most Americans agree with Republicans about race: that we are all created equal and deserve equal treatment and opportunity. The problem is that far too many Americans believe the lie that Republicans, instead of adhering to these basic truths, are racist. President Trump has the courage to express our views on race. We can win on this issue. Democrats don’t want all citizens to be treated equally. Democrats want people treated differently and according to their skin color. They want group justice. They call it social justice because it sounds better. In their idea of a just America, whites, Asians, and Jews must give up opportunities as a group, and blacks and other people of color must be privileged with extra opportunities and reparations. By their definition, Democrats claim half the country is racist. Understand this: the Democratic Party’s idea of racism is defined by group identity, not by an individual’s behavior or beliefs. You’re not biased? Doesn’t matter. Utterly reject discrimination? Doesn’t matter. White? You’re racist. Democrats believe being colorblind is itself racist. Republicans, who believe laws should be colorblind, are by definition racist.)

— How saving and sensible investing can pay for a long, active, comfortable retirement – Thomas Heath (DIERSEN: Your required minimum distribution (RMD) says a lot about how successful you were saving for your retirement. My RMD is only about $10,000/year. He said all the holdings have appreciated “a lot,” but he doesn’t plan to sell any because, (a) he doesn’t need the money and (b) selling would create a sizable tax bill. His father, who was an engineer with New York Telephone, gave him early training in investing and taught him the value of owning shares in good companies. It took me until I was 40.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— Chicago CEOs outrun peers on pay, while employees trail national median The wide pay gap reflects the area’s high concentration of big companies with lots of low-wage workers. – STEVEN R. STRAHLER (DIERSEN: Trump’s salary is only $400,000/year. In today’s dollars, my GAO salary in 1997, when I was 49 years old, was $127,654/year. That pay ratio is only 3.13. If Trump’s salary was adjusted for inflation, it would be $704,687/year today. I should write a book about my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes who viciously demonize, viciously denigrate, and viciously condemn government employees as being overcompensated. My GAO salary would have much lower if I had not earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32. (FROM THE ARTICLE: The average Jo working at a Chicago public company made 1.3 percent more last year, lifting her median wage to $68,262—barely 1 percent of the middling CEO’s $5.6 million. For the second consecutive year, proxy filings compare CEO compensation to the median-paid employee’s. Excluding a couple of outliers, this so-called pay ratio ranges between 661 and 12 at the 107 local companies reporting so far. Chicago’s median pay ratio rose from 111 to 113.5 in 2018. That’s well above the nationwide median of 74, with a typical local CEO making 14.6 percent more than counterparts around the country. The opposite was true for median-paid workers at Chicago-based companies, who made nearly 20 percent less than the national median of $84,398, which rose faster last year than Chicago’s median.)

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
— Knowing the score – Editorial (DIERSEN: How wealthy are/were your parents? When you were in high school and in college, did they buy you cars? Did they pay your college expenses? Did they get you jobs/promotions after you graduated? Did they give you money to buy a home? My outstanding parents did none of the aforesaid, yet my critics/opponents have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth and that I have always been privileged.)
https://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-edit-knowing-the-score-20190520-6dinzqz2bvhrxky7lgckitmbu4-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The College Board plans to add a 1-to-100 “adversity score” to student SAT results, in a well-intentioned attempt to add context to a youngster’s performance on the test and — this is the theory, anyway — encourage schools to admit more high-potential youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds. So far, they’re hiding the formula of how 15 different variables, including a school or neighborhood’s poverty levels, housing stability and crime rates, will be weighed in boiling everything down to a single, simple number. Bad beginning, especially for an institution committed to teaching and learning.)

According to my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes, baby boomers like me were born with a silver spoon in their mouth and they have always been privileged. They hint/imply/argue/shout that if I had been a member of any other generation, I never would have been able to a) buy new cars and collector cars like I did, b) earn college degrees like I did, c) buy real estate like I did, d) get married like I did, e) earn professional certifications and a professional license like I did, f) save for retirement like I did, g) etc.)

I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)

— Congress gets serious about retirement saving The government wants Americans to take more initiative for retirement planning – Alessandra Malito (DIERSEN: Your required minimum distribution (RMD) says a lot about how successful you were saving for your retirement. My RMD is only about $10,000/year. It would be much greater if my Democrat superiors in the federal government had not wasted my career and forced me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old.)
https://www.marketwatch.com/story/congress-gets-serious-about-retirement-saving-2019-05-16
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Increases the required minimum distribution age to 72 from 70 ½ years old by 2023, and then age 75 in 2030; creates an exception for individuals with $100,000 or less in eligible accounts, so that they can continue saving instead of having to withdraw; and reduces the penalty for failing to take RMDs from 50% to 25% of what they should have distributed. “It has a lot of common sense things that would make life easier for retirement savers and plan sponsors and administrators,” Grohowsky said.)

— In marijuana debate, Decatur city officials would wield power in where pot is sold – ANALISA TROFIMUK (DIERSEN: Needless-to-say, if you live in a municipality, please urge the leaders of your municipality, and those who want to be leaders of your municipality, a) to speak out against the marijuana bill in Illinois and b) to commit to voting against the sale of marijuana in your municipality.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Opt out or be open for business? That’s the question Decatur officials will be facing if Illinois lawmakers take the historic step of legalizing recreational marijuana. The legislation, a key campaign issue for Democrat J.B. Pritzker, is being considered by the Democrat-controlled General Assembly in the sprint to the end of session on May 31. The original legislation allowed expungements for cannabis-related convictions. The exact language is still under debate, along with fine-tuning various parts of the plan to meet concerns from law enforcement, current growers and activists. If the proposal survives the growing debate in Springfield, it will be left to municipal officials whether to allow pot dispensaries within their borders. Opting out means losing revenue generated from sales, as well as permit fees.)

They proclaim themselves socialists, but their economic policies and tolerance for other viewpoints reflect a different form of government—fascism: A political system in which authoritarian government does not own businesses and industries, but strictly regulates and controls their actions, output and rights—while constraining and suppressing citizens and their thought, speech and access to information. . .Twitter routinely engages in similar cold, calculated censorship of views it opposes. Google helps the Chinese government deny its citizens access to “dangerous ideas”—and says nothing when China sends a million Uighur Muslims to “reeducation camps.” Its hard-left employees ostracize any conservatives they still find in their ranks…and claim helping the US Defense Department with Cloud computing or artificial intelligence surveillance would “violate their principles.” Facebook “shadow banned” an ad promoting a Heartland Institute video that called on millennials to reject socialism and embrace capitalism. Facebook censors told Heartland they “don’t support ads for your business model” (capitalism) and would not reveal “red flags” and trade-secret algorithms they use to “identify violations” of their policies and “help preserve the integrity of our internal processes.” Google suppressed Claremont Institute ads for a talk on multiculturalism and political speech restrictions. Twitter routinely engages in similar cold, calculated censorship of views it opposes. Wikipedia posts distorted or false bios for climate realist experts and organizations—labeling me an anti-environment lobbyist—and then pops up ads soliciting money for its biased “educational” material. Securing corrections is a long, often fruitless process. Even more totalitarian, the Southern Poverty Law Center uses phony “hate speech” claims to defund and “deplatform” conservative groups like David Horowitz’s Freedom Center, by pressuring credit card companies to close off donations to them. State attorneys general and members of Congress want to prosecute and jail people for “denying the reality” of “manmade climate cataclysms.” Worst of all, the callous organizations and policies that Big Tech supports cause millions of deaths every year, by denying impoverished nations and families access to the modern energy, insect control and agricultural technologies that its vocal, racist elements loathe.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Noting that Google’s search algorithm is “perhaps the most powerful mediator of online attention to news,” a team of university scholars conducted an audit that found just 20 news sources account for more than half of article impressions, and most lean left. The top 20 percent of sources — 136 of 678 sampled — accounted for 86 percent of article impressions. And the top three accounted for 23 percent: CNN, the New York Times and the Washington Post, according to Assistant Professor Nicholas Diakopoulos and his team at the Computational Journalism Lab at Northwestern. In an article for Columbia Journalism Review, he wrote that “for all the influence Google has in directing attention, we know painfully little about how its algorithm selects and curates news.” “Which sites does it direct traffic toward? And how does Google’s news curation impact the diversity of information found?” he asked. The audit examined Google Top Stories in terms of ideological lean, based on the self-reported political affiliation of Facebook users sharing content from those sources. The team’s data showed that 62.4 percent of article impressions were from sources rated as left-leaning. Just 11.3 percent were from sources rated as right-leaning. “These statistics underscore the degree of concentration of attention to a relatively narrow slice of news sources,” Diakopoulos wrote. . .‘News blacklist’ In April, a newly obtained document showed Google maintains a “news blacklist” and manipulates its search results manually, contrary to the company’s official denials. WND reported in March a Google manager allegedly responded to an employee who questioned the company’s war on “fake news” by arguing that fake news and “hate speech” had to be stopped, because “that’s how Trump won.” In November, the Daily Caller reported Google employees debated whether to bury the reporting of conservative media outlets in the company’s search function in response to Trump’s election. Employees similarly sought to manipulate search results to combat Trump’s travel ban, the communications showed. In an interview with WND at the time, Robert Epstein – who was famed behavioral psychologist B.F. Skinner’s last Ph.D. student at Harvard – said Google’s effort to defeat Trump confirms his extensive, peer-reviewed research over the past half decade. “Not only does Google have the power to shift votes and opinions on a massive scale, they actually use that power,” Epstein said. During the 2016 election campaign, Epstein concluded that Google heavily biased results in favor of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, possibly shifting as many as 3 million votes. A video leaked in September showed Google executives at their first weekly meeting after Trump’s election exhibiting panic and dismay while expressing their determination to thwart the new administration’s agenda as well as the emerging global populist movement.)

— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Tollway Executive Director José Alvarez took an $18,996 (8%) pay cut for his new position. In 1980, when I was 31 years old, I took a $19,568 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO. I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul, I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976, and I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $82,579-$93,592.)
https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20190517/new-tollway-chief-wants-to-hear-from-stakeholders-on-route-53
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Executive Director José Alvarez, who attended his first board meeting Thursday, will be paid $223,000 annually, 3.7% more than his predecessor Elizabeth Gorman, who received $215,000. “I took a pay cut. That’s how excited I am about the opportunity” to work at the tollway, said Alvarez, former chief operating officer for the Chicago Housing Authority. Alvarez joins a rookie tollway board picked by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, who supported the ouster of the previous slate of directors after a series of Daily Herald reports about tollway spending and patronage hiring at the agency. Alvarez “came in on May 1 and hit the ground running,” Chairman Will Evans said at Thursday’s meeting. “I am committed to investing in our team and building on its strengths,” Alvarez said. He likened the tollway’s situation to the housing authority, which had “five CEOs in five years.” Former tollway Executive Director Greg Bedalov, who was paid $186,000, left in February 2018 and Gorman stayed for 13 months.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Common sense and public opinion both strongly favor prioritizing immigrants who bring education and skills to the country, so that they can support themselves and provide more tax payments than they consume in the form of welfare and other need-based services. Few questions of public policy receive support in the eighty percent range, yet merit-based immigration actually does receive nearly 80% in reliable polling. . .The entire point of immigration policy is to benefit the citizens of the United States. Forcing citizens to pay for the welfare and government services consumed by poor families entering with children (who will need expensive bilingual schooling), and who will generate few taxes but consume large tax revenues if they bring low education and skill credentials, enacts a penalty on American citizens.)
