— MARCH 3, 2016 FLASHBACK: Storage Units, Now With Space to Cook, Relax and Entertain Traditional industrial park-style storage facilities are giving way to customized spaces with kitchens, reclaimed wood and stylish seating areas. – Candace Jackson (DIERSEN: I am in the process of buying the 20X40 unit that served as Mr. Garrison’s indoor basketball court.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/storage-units-now-with-space-to-cook-relax-and-entertain-1457026958
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Shane Garrison, a 46-year-old executive at a commercial real-estate company, purchased a 3,000-square-foot storage unit in Iron Gate Motor Condos in Naperville, Ill., last May, spending roughly $400,000 to buy and build out the three-story space. He added an indoor basketball court, kitchen, car lift, two bathrooms and arcade games. Mr. Garrison also worked with an architect to design his place with a 30-foot-high reclaimed barn wood wall, polished concrete floors and an iron staircase. There is even a deck for outdoor grilling. The idea was to build a place where his wife and their 7-year-old and 5-year-old children could hang out with him while he tinkered with hiscars, a diverse collection he rotates through the space that includes a 1978 Porsche 930 and a Chevrolet Chevelle. “If you’re a car guy, you’d like somewhere to put them, and then you think about that and your family,” he says. “You don’t want it to be binary where you’re just there and the kids are at home.” For others, it’s more about creating the ultimate man cave. “While everyone checks their egos at the door, these guys really one up each other as far as finishing out their man caves,” says Mark Karolich, a Naperville, Ill. accountant who keeps four of his Porsches in his Iron Gate unit. Purchased for $134,000 and finished for another $50,000 to $60,000, it includes a reclaimed wood wall, a mural of the Breckenridge Gate, a kitchenette and a stone-tile bathroom. Tom Burgess, the developer of Iron Gate, says he opened the facility in 2014 and is currently constructing the fifth of 12 planned buildings. Prices for raw spaces start at $129,000, and go up to about $450,000.)

How strongly do Biden voters want Biden to use the federal government to get rid of those who voted for Trump in your neighborhood, in your precinct, in your municipal district, in your municipality, in your township, in your county district, in your county, in Illinois, and in America? 269 voted for Biden in my precinct while only 157 voted for Trump. 39,530 voted for Biden in Milton Township while only 26,080 voted for Trump. 281,222 voted for Biden in DuPage County while only 193,611 voted for Trump.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: 2. How does bias creep in? In any number of ways: People making a program can introduce biases, or the algorithms can “learn” bad behavior from training data before launch or from users afterward, causing results to warp over time. Software engineers can inadvertently discriminate against people. Facebook was embarrassed in 2015 when some Native Americans were blocked from signing up for accounts because their names — including Lance Browneyes and Dana Lone Hill — were judged fake. And Amazon.com Inc. ran into problems when an AI system it was testing to screen job applicants “taught” itself to weed out women. In other cases, algorithms may have been trained on too narrow a slice of reality.)

Previously, they had not taken any formal disciplinary actions against me. But they had given me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take a $20,157 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— Richard Goldberg is being recruited by some members of the Illinois GOP to become party chairman, according to a source close to the selection process. The position opened up over the weekend when Chairman Tim Schneider announced he was stepping down after six years. Goldberg most recently served as a director with the White House National Security Council and before that was chief of staff for former Gov. Bruce Rauner and deputy chief of staff to former Sen. Mark Kirk. Goldberg, who’s also an intelligence officer in the Naval Reserve with the rank of lieutenant commander, is seen as someone who can work across all areas of the Illinois GOP and stand up to Democrats. Goldberg would bring the star power that comes from working for Trump. He also could help rebuild the Republican presence in Lake County, where Kirk resides. The area has moved left with each election cycle in recent years. — Biden won the most total votes — and the fewest total counties — of any president-elect – Camille Caldera (DIERSEN: Needless-to-say, the future is bleak for Trump voters who live and/or work in states, counties, county districts, townships, municipalities, municipal districts, and/or precincts that Biden won. Ever-increasing, Biden voters have made it clear that they will use government to get rid of Trump voters once and for all. What should Trump voters do for their self-defense? Trump got only 40% of the vote in DuPage County, only 39% of the vote in Milton Township, and only 36% of the vote in my Wheaton precinct.)

— GAO Report Examines Reasons Behind Gender Pay Gap, Shows Variation (DIERSEN: If I had not been denied my 7th Amendment rights in Diersen v. GAO, I would have presented a jury with evidence that my Democrat GAO superiors paid their employees who were minority and/or female and who had similar education, similar work experience, and/or similar professional certifications and licenses to what I had far more than they paid their employees who were White and/or male. Starting in 1976, when I was 27 years old and earned an MBA from Loyola, I had more education than most of my IRS coworkers. Starting in 1979, when I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt, I had more professional certifications than virtually all my IRS coworkers. Stating in 1981, when I passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt, I had more professional certifications than virtually all my GAO coworkers. Stating in 1981, when I became a licensed CPA, I had more professional licenses that virtually all my GAO coworkers. Further, I earned a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980 and a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997. Further, I became a Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, Certified Government Financial Manager in 1994, Certified Financial Services Auditor in 1996, and Forensic Accountant in 1997.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: What GAO Found The overall pay gap between men and women in the federal workforce has narrowed considerably, from 19 cents on the dollar in 1999 to 7 cents in 2017, but the current pay gap is greater for certain groups of women, according to GAO’s analysis of data from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Two trends help explain why the pay gap has narrowed: (1) men and women have become more similar in measurable factors related to pay, such as occupation; and (2) women have earned slightly higher rates of pay increases than men. In 2017, most of the overall pay gap—or 6 of 7 cents on the dollar—was not explained by differences between men and women in measurable factors (see figure). This unexplained portion of the pay gap may be due to factors not captured in the data GAO analyzed, such as work experience outside the federal government, or factors that cannot be measured, such as discrimination and individual choices. In 2017, the overall and unexplained gaps were greater for certain groups. For example, compared to White men, the unexplained gap was greater for Hispanic/Latina, Black, and American Indian or Alaska Native women than for White and Asian, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander women. Gender Composition of the Federal Workforce and Prior Research on the Gender Pay Gap for Federal Workers Over the last 20 years, the federal workforce has consistently included more men than women. For example, according to OPM’s EHRI data, men made up 55 percent of the federal workforce in 1999 and 57 percent in 2018. In 2018, of about 2.1 million federal workers captured in the EHRI data, approximately 1.2 million were men and nearly 926,000 were women. Although estimates of the exact size of the gender pay gap vary, the estimated pay gap between women and men in the federal workforce is smaller than the pay gap in the entire U.S. workforce, which includes the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors. In 2018, the pay gap for federal workers was about 12 cents on the dollar, and the pay gap for the entire workforce was about 18 cents on the dollar, according to self-reported data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. Prior research has found that the gender pay gap for federal workers is partly explained by differences between men and women in measurable factors that affect pay, such as occupation, education, and experience. This is referred to as the explained pay gap. For example, in our 2009 report, we found that the pay gap was partly due to differences between men and women in the occupations they held, their levels of education, and how long they had worked for the federal government. We also identified other measurable factors that contributed to the explained gender pay gap, including race and ethnicity, federal agency, and veteran status. However, we found that a portion of the pay gap was not explained by differences between men and women in measurable factors that affect pay. This is referred to as the unexplained pay gap. Specifically, we found that 7 cents of the 11-cent pay gap in 2007 were unexplained after accounting for differences in measurable factors. Similarly, OPM found that about 4 cents of the 13-cent pay gap for white-collar federal workers in 2012 were not explained by measurable factors. The unexplained pay gap may be due to factors that are not captured in available data, such as work experience outside the federal government, or those that cannot be measured, such as discrimination and individual career choices. Furthermore, the explained pay gap could also be influenced by discrimination, to the extent that the measurable factors themselves are affected by discrimination.)

ILLINOIS REPUBLICAN PARTY
— ILGOP Chairman Announces Transition to New Leadership for the 2022 Cycle
https://mailchi.mp/6080dbbda8e7/icymi-pritzker-admin-mia-while-over-20-of-lasalle-veterans-home-residents-die-of-covid-4669652
(FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT: At today’s ILGOP State Central Committee meeting, Illinois Republican Party Chairman Tim Schneider announced that he would begin a transition out of his role as head of the state party and appoint a new committee within the ILGOP State Central Committee tasked with creating a process for selecting a new Chairman in the weeks to come. Schneider has released the following statement: “It has been the honor of a lifetime to lead this party for the past six years. The Illinois Republican Party is an important force for change in a state that so desperately needs it. During my tenure, the ILGOP has stood for reform – term limits, fair maps, and the end to the rampant corruption plaguing our state. And we were united around our conservative values of smaller government, lower taxes, and personal responsibility. In the 2020 election cycle, the Illinois Republican Party played important roles in defeating Pritzker’s progressive income tax hike, defending congressional target Congressman Rodney Davis, kicking Madigan’s favorite judge Tom Kilbride off the state Supreme Court, electing David Overstreet to the state Supreme Court, and netting a seat in the Illinois House. The Illinois Republican Party concludes the cycle more united, stronger, and well positioned to defeat the Pritzker-Madigan agenda in 2021. I believe the ILGOP is in a great position to take this momentum and regain the Governor’s mansion, win a US Senate seat, win majority control of the Supreme Court for the first time, and put up a strong fight in other races up and down the ballot in 2022. So, after the successes in 2020 and with plenty of time to gear up for the next election, I have decided it’s the right time to begin the transition to a new Chairman early next year. The entire State Central Committee is committed to an open and transparent process to select the best person for the job.” Chairman Schneider was unanimously elected Chairman of the Illinois Republican Party in May 2014. Schneider was re-elected to a second four-year term in May 2018. The term concludes in May 2022. Chairman Schneider has selected the following State Central Committee members to serve on a committee that will recommend a process and timeline for choosing a successor Chairman at the party’s next meeting on January 9, 2021. Mike Bigger – 18th Congressional District (Chairman) Char Foss-Eggemann – 9th Congressional District Fred Floreth – 13th Congressional District Judy Diekelman – 2nd Congressional District Schneider will serve as Chairman until the full State Central Committee chooses a successor Chairman.)

https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/chicago-politics/tim-schneider-to-step-down-as-chairman-of-the-illinois-republican-party/2387428/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Tim Schneider has announced that he is stepping down from his role as chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, saying he believes “it is a good time” to leave the position he has occupied for the last six years. Schneider says the success of the Republican Party in the 2020 election cycle allowed him to step aside, and that the transition process to find the next leader of the party is currently ongoing. “After six-plus years and a very successful cycle, and with the Illinois GOP positioned well, I believe it’s a good time for me to transition out,” he said in a statement to NBC 5’s Mary Ann Ahern. Schneider says that the average length of a state chairmanship in the party lasts for less than two years. According to the Illinois GOP’s website, Schneider was unanimously selected as the party’s chairman in 2014, with an emphasis on “value for tax dollars, a quality education for our kids (and) term limits on career politicians.” Before being picked as the Republican party chairman, Schneider served as a Cook County board commissioner in the 15th District, a position he held from 2006 to 2018.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Illinois Republican Party Chairman Tim Schneider says he’ll step down amid hard-liner push to replace him – RICK PEARSON
https://www.chicagotribune.com/politics/ct-illinois-republican-chairman-tim-schneider-to-resign-20201205-wmwfzltx7zgzfirasawxaiytyy-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sources said Schneider, who embraced President Donald Trump’s reelection and weathered the controversial years of Rauner’s tenure, was facing opposition from more conservative hard-liners within the state GOP hierarchy. The sources, who were not authorized to speak publicly about the meeting, said a push was made to name Lake County GOP Chairman Mark Shaw to replace Schneider as chairman during Saturday’s meeting, but those efforts fell short. Two years ago, Lake Forest’s Shaw sought to challenge Schneider for the party’s chairmanship. But in a compromise brokered by Rauner, Shaw backed off and accepted the newly created title of party co-chairman for “conservative and grassroots outreach.” At the time, Rauner, who was seeking reelection, fell out of favor with party conservatives over his support of legislation that expanded abortion and LGBTQ rights. Those positions almost cost him renomination after narrowly defeating former state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton in the GOP primary. Shaw has been a controversial figure. In September, his county GOP organization touted a Republican fundraiser on Facebook, saying, “An invigorated Republican electorate enjoyed a beautiful fundraiser … ‘without fear and without masks!’” The posting included a video of the indoor and outdoor event, which featured few people wearing masks despite guidelines dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Two weeks after the 2017 Las Vegas massacre of concertgoers that killed 58 people and wounded hundreds of others, Shaw’s county GOP organization held a fundraiser where at least a dozen firearms were raffled off. Shaw said some of the money raised at the event would be donated to Las Vegas first responders. With immediate support for Shaw lacking among top Republicans on Saturday, the party leaders agreed to form a search committee, which will present its recommendations for a new chairman on Jan. 9. Schneider’s term was to run through May 2022. “I believe the ILGOP is in a great position to take this momentum (of 2020) and regain the governor’s mansion, win a U.S. Senate seat, win majority control of the Supreme Court for the first time, and put up a strong fight in other races up and down the ballot in 2022,” Schneider said.)

Ever increasingly, Democrats call Republicans White supremacists, Nazis, KKK members, haters, racists, sexists, bigots, and even worse things. https://nypost.com/2020/12/04/facebooks-hate-speech-algorithm-to-prioritize-anti-black-comments/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Facebook has updated its hate speech algorithm, reversing years of neutrality to prioritize anti-black comments while making anti-white slurs the lowest priority. The tech giant’s new system for detecting hate speech, known internally as the WoW Project, will automatically delete hateful language directed at the LGBTQ community, Jews, Muslims and African Americans — which has been dubbed by Facebook engineers as the “worst of the worst,” the Washington Post reported. The company will now begin scoring hate speech and offensive posts, and remarks about “men,” “whites” and “Americans” will be marked “low sensitivity,” the report said.)

That work required assuring the accuracy and support for each and every word, number, table, graph, chart, conclusion, opinion, and recommendation in GAO reports. I worked for IRS 1971-1980, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $85,084-$96,431/year. https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20201201/recount-after-75-vote-difference-doesnt-stop-dupage-auditors-office-from-changing-hands
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A new DuPage County auditor took office Tuesday for the first time in 12 years, but his election opponent says the historically close race isn’t over yet. Downers Grove Democrat William “Bill” White assumed the role as the county’s top financial watchdog even as his predecessor, Bob Grogan, prepares for “double overtime” in one of the tightest contests in the suburbs. Grogan has asked for a partial recount of the election results after coming up just 75 votes shy of victory out of more than 466,000 ballots cast. Grogan, a Downers Grove Republican who held the position for three terms, filed for a discovery recount in up to 25% of the precincts countywide. Wheaton Republican Tim Whelan also has requested a partial recount after falling short in his reelection bid for a seat on the forest preserve district board. Official results from last month’s election show Democratic challenger Jeff Gahris defeating Whelan by 718 votes. The recount proceedings are set to begin at 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, in the county administration building in Wheaton. Both Grogan and Whelan are represented by attorney Phillip Luetkehans. The exploratory process leaves some uncertainty over races that add to historic gains for Democrats in DuPage. In a partial recount, the county clerk’s office will make election materials available for scrutiny to help candidates determine if there are enough voter discrepancies to seek a court order for a complete recount. Pat Bond, the attorney for the county clerk’s office, said county election officials have had roughly 30 discovery recounts over the past 20 years, but none resulted in a full recount. Election authorities anticipate the partial recounts could be done by Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the earliest, Bond said. Grogan already has put out an appeal for donations if he should decide to forge ahead with a legal challenge. “I have confidence that assuming that we find a critical mass of differences that we’ll be able to fund the full recount if we can get there past the judge,” Grogan said. He’s cautiously hopeful as he prepares for an examination of ballots next week. “Auditors know what to look for, but they don’t know what the results are of what they look for until they’ve done it,” Grogan said Tuesday. “So I’m objective. I have an open mind. I am hopeful, but honestly, mistakes go both directions.”)

WGLT
— Ex-Spokesperson Sues McLean County, Alleging Race Discrimination – RYAN DENHAM (DIERSEN: Like McNeal, I went public. When I turned 40 in 1988, I became an active member in a class action lawsuit that charged my GAO superiors with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation. Rather than help the lawsuit succeed, virtually all the members of the class in GAO’s Chicago office “cut deals” with my GAO superiors. Those deals included helping my GAO superiors a) get rid of my mentor, b) keep me off audits of IRS, c) give me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, d) always rank me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, e) not promote me beyond GS-13, and f) force me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old.)
https://www.wglt.org/post/ex-spokesperson-sues-mclean-county-alleging-race-discrimination#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Dion McNeal was the county’s communications specialist and one of the most public voices in its initial COVID-19 response last spring. McNeal, who is Black, was involved in a dispute over a county press release and social media post in June—just after the killing of George Floyd—that linked the trauma of racism and police brutality with public health. McNeal says that put him at odds with some county officials. He then went to the media with his concerns, in which he pointed to a lack of Black leadership in the county’s health department. He says he was fired a few days later. . .So on June 10, McNeal sent out the original version of the press release. The next day, McNeal was told he would have multiple job duties removed, according to the lawsuit. McNeal says he faced “severe adverse employment actions,” in contrast with a white co-worker who also sent a letter to the media June 19 raising concerns about the lack of diversity in the health department. That white co-worker was treated more favorably, the lawsuit claims. McNeal also claims sex discrimination. McNeal has identified himself as a “proud healthy Black queer HIV positive man.” “Similarly situated female employees … did not suffer the same adverse employment action McNeal did and, therefore, were treated more favorably,” his lawsuit reads. McNeal’s accusation of unlawful retaliation is based on how the county and health department reacted to him going public in his June 19 statement. McNeal claims he was “speaking as a public citizen on a matter of public concern and was engaged in activity protected by First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.” “McNeal suffered several adverse actions and deprivations likely to deter his protected activity, including without limitation, increased job scrutiny, placement on administrative leave, placement on a performance improvement plan, and termination of employment,” the lawsuit reads. “McNeal’s legally protected activity was at least a motivating factor in the defendants’ decision to impose the deprivations.”)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2020/12/01/trump-repeal-section-230-ndaa/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Section 230 is a broad, decades-old federal law that spares a wide array of sites and services from being held liable for the content posted by their users — and, in the process, the decisions about the posts, photos and videos that tech companies take down or leave online. It is considered one of the Web’s foundational laws, crafted in large part to facilitate free expression digitally. Many lawmakers — Democrats and Republicans — increasingly have come to question whether the protections are outdated, conferring legal immunity on tech giants at a time when they have failed to crack down on hate speech, election disinformation and other harmful content online. But Trump and his Republican allies have seized on the debate to advance their arguments that Facebook, Google, Twitter and others should be penalized for exhibiting systemic political bias against conservatives — a charge for which they have provided scant evidence, and one that tech giants long have denied.)
