http://www.gopusa.com/?p=14062
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I asked a successful businessman the other day what he thought about Donald Trump. He turned his thumb down. Wow. “Are you going to vote for Hillary?” I asked with trepidation. “Of course not,” he replied, almost insulted by the question. “I understand the concept of a binary decision.”  I got a similar response when I asked oil magnate T. Boone Pickens whether he would vote for Trump. He looked at me with a quizzical expression and replied: “Well, who else is there to vote for?” Right. Who else is there? Yet, amazingly, a caucus of lifelong Republican politicos in Washington are announcing to the world with defiance and self-righteousness that they will vote for Hillary Clinton. They are mostly former Mitt Romney and George W. Bush operatives. They lost, and now they want people to believe that their anti-Trumpism is a principled act of heroism. They ingratiate themselves to The New York Times, Washington Post and team Clinton — the sworn enemies of free markets and conservative values. Somehow this doesn’t offend their moral compass.)

http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/293347-trump-rips-clinton-for-playing-race-card
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump ripped Hillary Clinton for playing the race card on Thursday, calling her a bully seeking to distract voters from her own controversies by accusing others of racism. “She lies, she smears, she paints decent Americans as racists,” Trump said at a rally in New Hampshire on Thursday. “She bullies voters, who only want a better future and tries to intimidate them out of voting for change.” Trump’s remarks were a pre-emptive attack on a speech Clinton delivered Thursday afternoon that linked Trump to white supremacist groups. Clinton in a tweet on Thursday highlighted members of the Ku Klux Klan complimenting Trump. The attacks from Clinton follow Trump’s decision to make Breitbart News executive Steve Bannon his campaign CEO. Breitbart is considered a part of the conservative “alt-right” movement that Clinton criticized in her speech. The two presidential contenders are in a pitched battle over race that appears to be aimed at both minority voters and white voters who might be reluctant to support a candidate viewed as sympathetic to white nationalism. The GOP nominee said it is clear Clinton is purposely trying to change the subject from questions about Clinton Foundation donors’ access to the State Department when she was in charge there. “Now, as all of these revelations have been discovered this week, Hillary Clinton has been hiding,” Trump said. “But she’s emerging not to take responsibly for her unethical and criminal conduct, but instead to make one of the most brazen attempts at distraction in the history of politics. “The news reports are that Hillary Clinton is going to try to accuse this campaign, and all of you and the millions of decent Americans at record levels … and going to accuse decent Americans who support this campaign, of being racists,” he continued. “It’s the oldest play in the Democratic playbook. “When Democratic policies fail, they are left with only this one tired argument. It’s a tired, disgusting argument, and it’s so totally predictable, and they’re failing so badly.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The shift from pensions to 401(k) plans is making retirement inequality much worse-and education is what separates the haves from the have-nots, a new study has found. College graduates have always been able to get better jobs. What’s new in recent decades is that traditional pensions have all but vanished, replaced by 401(k)-style plans. In 1980, 38 percent of private sector workers had a pension and 19 percent a 401(k). By last year, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, the numbers had more or less reversed-just 15 percent had a pension and 43 percent a 401(k). That shift is creating “double disadvantages for the less educated,” wrote University of Kansas sociology professor ChangHwan Kim and Social Security Administration researcher Christopher Tamborini in a paper presented at the American Sociological Association’s annual conference on Tuesday.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160825/discuss/160829390/
— Whose mistake?  Did GOP state Rep. Michael McAuliffe lie about being a veteran in newspaper op-eds, as his Democratic opponent suggests? The issue’s a little more complicated than that, I learned when I began looking into it this week. McAuliffe, whose district includes portions of Des Plaines, Mount Prospect, Rosemont and Park Ridge, wrote a letter to several newspapers last fall – including the Daily Herald — using the term “my fellow veterans” although he never served in the armed forces. House Republican strategist Joe Woodward said the error was a staffer’s and offered a revised letter to newspapers in short order. But Woodward says the Daily Herald was the only paper to print the revision. The issue is being highlighted now by Democrat Merry Martwig in a race considered to be one of the most competitive in the suburbs. – Kerry Lester  (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents stress not only that I am not a veteran, they stress that I sought and obtained student and financial hardship draft deferments 1966-1971.)

WILL COUNTY GAZETTE & DUPAGE POLICY JOURNAL
— Who’s political now? An unvarnished look at the Southern Illinoisan editorial board
http://willcountygazette.com/stories/511000491-who-s-political-now-an-unvarnished-look-at-the-southern-illinoisan-editorial-board
http://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511000482-who-s-political-now-an-unvarnished-look-at-the-southern-illinoisan-editorial-board
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Southern Illinoisan recently devoted space in its newspaper to an attack on this paper. The piece, penned collectively by the newspaper’s editorial board, entitled “Voice of The Southern: Know what you’re reading” took issue with the Southwest Illinois News’ editorial bent. We are not shy about our position in favoring free-market principles and less government spending. We’ve said this time and again, and we’ll say it again here. But the description of this newspaper by The Southern Illinoisan was beyond disdain. “Does it look like a newspaper? For the most part, yeah. It’s got a masthead, some stories on the front page, an index, a community calendar, an editorial – why, it even has a sports page,” the Southern Illinoisan wrote in its editorial before going on to criticize us for covering local challengers over entrenched local politicians. Why have we focused on these candidates? Simple. The Southern Illinoisan and many other daily newspapers like it rarely mention the local challengers. Unlike the editorial board of the Southern Illinoisan, we live in a reality where people and organizations are allowed to openly have opinions about the state of government; and as the residents of Illinois know, the state is in peril. What readers may not know, however, is that the editorial board of the Southern Illinoisan is populated by “journalists” aligned with the Democratic Party and leftist ideals.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Corvettes at Carlisle is Carlisle Events’ largest car show of the year, but registration information shows that this year will be the biggest to date. Because Corvette owners showing their cars throughout the weekend must register them with Carlisle Events ahead of time, Mike Garland, the company’s media specialist, said they’ve seen cars registered from 48 out of the nation’s 50 states. On top of that, Glenn White, executive director of the Downtown Carlisle Association, which produces the Chip Miller Memorial Corvette Parade to be held Saturday at 7 p.m. in downtown Carlisle, said the parade usually features a cap of 400 cars in the event, but this year, close to 500 Corvettes have entered due to some extra space in the event. “We’ll probably have 500 Corvettes in this parade, which will make it our largest ever,” White said. “It’s a great way to pull in thousands of people from those fairgrounds to the stores and the restaurants in the borough’s downtown.”)

NEW YORK POST
— American journalism is collapsing before our eyes – Michael Goodwin
http://nypost.com/2016/08/21/american-journalism-is-collapsing-before-our-eyes/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump may or may not fix his campaign, and Hillary Clinton may or may not become the first female president. But something else happening before our eyes is almost as important: the complete collapse of American journalism as we know it. The frenzy to bury Trump is not limited to the Clinton campaign and the Obama White House. They are working hand-in-hand with what was considered the cream of the nation’s news organizations. The shameful display of naked partisanship by the elite media is unlike anything seen in modern America. The largest broadcast networks — CBS, NBC and ABC — and major newspapers like The New York Times and Washington Post have jettisoned all pretense of fair play. Their fierce determination to keep Trump out of the Oval Office has no precedent. Indeed, no foreign enemy, no terror group, no native criminal gang, suffers the daily beating that Trump does. The mad mullahs of Iran, who call America the Great Satan and vow to wipe Israel off the map, are treated gently by comparison. By torching its remaining credibility in service of Clinton, the mainstream media’s reputations will likely never recover, nor will the standards. No future producer, editor, reporter or anchor can be expected to meet a test of fairness when that standard has been trashed in such willful and blatant fashion. Liberal bias in journalism is often baked into the cake. The traditional ethos of comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable leads to demands that government solve every problem. Favoring big government, then, becomes routine among most journalists, especially young ones. I know because I was one of them. I started at the Times while the Vietnam War and civil-rights movement raged, and was full of certainty about right and wrong. My editors were, too, though in a different way. Our boss of bosses, the legendary Abe Rosenthal, knew his reporters leaned left, so he leaned right to “keep the paper straight.” That meant the Times, except for the opinion pages, was scrubbed free of reporters’ political views, an edict that was enforced by giving the opinion and news operations separate editors. The church-and-state structure was one reason the Times was considered the flagship of journalism. Those days are gone. The Times now is so out of the closet as a Clinton shill that it is giving itself permission to violate any semblance of evenhandedness in its news pages as well as its opinion pages. A recent article by its media reporter, Jim Rutenberg, whom I know and like, began this way: “If you’re a working journalist and you believe that Donald J. Trump is a demagogue playing to the nation’s worst racist and nationalistic tendencies, that he cozies up to anti-American dictators and that he would be dangerous with control of the United States nuclear codes, how the heck are you supposed to cover him?” Whoa, Nellie. The clear assumption is that many reporters see Trump that way, and it is noteworthy that no similar question is raised about Clinton, whose scandals are deserving only of “scrutiny.” Rutenberg approvingly cites a leftist journalist who calls one candidate “normal” and the other “abnormal.” Clinton is hardly “normal” to the 68 percent of Americans who find her dishonest and untrustworthy, though apparently not a single one of those people writes for the Times. Statistically, that makes the Times “abnormal.” Also, you don’t need to be a detective to hear echoes in that first paragraph of Clinton speeches and ads, including those featured prominently on the Times’ Web site. In effect, the paper has seamlessly adopted Clinton’s view as its own, then tries to justify its coverage. It’s an impossible task, and Rutenberg fails because he must. Any reporter who agrees with Clinton about Trump has no business covering either candidate. It’s pure bias, which the Times fancies itself an expert in detecting in others, but is blissfully tolerant of its own. And with the top political editor quoted in the story as approving the one-sided coverage as necessary and deserving, the prejudice is now official policy. It’s a historic mistake and a complete break with the paper’s own traditions. Instead of dropping its standards, the Times should bend over backwards to enforce them, even while acknowledging that Trump is a rare breed. That’s the whole point of standards — they are designed to guide decisions not just in easy cases, but in all cases, to preserve trust. The Times, of course, is not alone in becoming unhinged over Trump, but that’s also the point. It used to be unique because of its adherence to fairness. Now its only standard is a double standard, one that it proudly confesses. Shame would be more appropriate.)

And that could be a problem. “You have the canaries in the coal mine — cars that are more discretionary rather than functional purchases, and cars that you see starting to decline first” when the market starts to plateau or dip, he says. “We’re seeing that in two areas — luxury brands are struggling more, and so are these performance cars.” Indeed, luxury car sales have fallen 13 percent year to date in a total market that’s up 1.1 percent.)

NEW YORK TIMES
— For Donald Trump’s Family, an Immigrant’s Tale With 2 Beginnings – JASON HOROWITZ  (DIERSEN: From what county(s) did your ancestors immigrate from and when?  All my ancestors immigrated to northeast Illinois during the 1840s and 1850s.  Of course, needless-to-say, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always used that against me.  What if I had successfully pretended to be of Swedish national origin?)
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/22/us/politics/for-donald-trumps-family-an-immigrants-tale-with-2-beginnings.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the middle of the night, Friedrich Trump left his house in Kallstadt, a small Bavarian town spotted with vineyards and a Lutheran church, for a northern port city that served as Germany’s gateway to America. A few days later, on Oct. 7, 1885, Friedrich, then 16 years old, bought a steerage-class ticket on the S.S. Eider, the start of an adventurous life as a barber, restaurateur, saloonkeeper, hotelier, entrepreneur, gold rush prospector, shipwreck survivor and New York real estate investor. It was an immigrant tale that would make any family proud. But for decades, the Trumps almost never talked about it. Friedrich Trump’s son, Fred, came of age between the World Wars, a period marked by resentment of and even discrimination toward Germans in the United States. More important, he was marketing his properties to the growing Jewish middle class filling up the old farmsteads of central Brooklyn and Queens. During his presidential campaign, Fred’s son Donald has occasionally run roughshod over Jewish sensibilities, notably with a post on Twitter that featured a six-pointed star and a pile of cash. But for many years, the Trumps went out of their way to avoid disquieting their Jewish friends and customers by burying their German identity. They told anyone who asked that they were Swedish. “He had thought, ‘Gee whiz, I’m not going to be able to sell these homes if there are all these Jewish people,’” said Donald J. Trump’s cousin John Walter, the Trump family historian, who has worked closely with Fred and Donald. And once they started portraying themselves as Swedish, they could not stop. “After the war, he’s still Swedish,” Mr. Walter said. “It was just going, going, going.” Even Mr. Trump, not known to be shy about embellishing facts, questioned the need. According to Mr. Walter, when Mr. Trump was working on his best seller “The Art of the Deal” in the mid-1980s, he asked his father, “Do I have to do this Swedish thing?” In the book, published in 1987, he wrote that his father’s story was “classic Horatio Alger,” and that his grandfather “came here from Sweden as a child.” Mr. Trump has been called to account for the discrepancy in the past, sometimes admitting it, sometimes not. In an interview in his Trump Tower office, he at first claimed not to know that his father pretended to be Swedish, saying: “Is that true? I don’t know.” He later acknowledged that the two of them would occasionally discuss the concealment of their heritage, explaining that his father “didn’t want to put any pressure” on his Jewish friends. “It was a very tough time,” he said. “We have a war, we are fighting a war with Germany,” said Mr. Trump, who was born a year after World War II ended.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois’ contract with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees – the state’s largest government-worker union – expired on June 30, 2015. Since then, AFSCME officials have been clamoring for a “fair contract,” with demands including Cadillac health insurance at little cost – hardly a fair proposal for state taxpayers, who can’t afford to keep paying for such exorbitant state-worker benefits. Under the expired contract, taxpayers cover nearly $15,000 per AFSCME worker in annual health care costs, though workers themselves pay just $4,452 toward their own coverage. Meanwhile, private-sector workers have seen rate increases of up to 49 percent in the Illinois health care exchange in 2016 alone.)

http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2016/08/18/mike-pence-releases-financial-disclosure-report/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican vice-presidential nominee Mike Pence on Thursday night released a financial disclosure form that appears to show a negative net worth outside of a state pension—the starkest possible contrast from the top of the GOP ticket. While presidential nominee Donald Trump has boasted at length on the size of his financial disclosure statement and his personal net worth, Mr. Pence’s federally mandated disclosure shows the picture of financial simplicity. He reports no significant savings accounts, mutual funds or 401(k) accounts from before he entered elected office. Mr. Pence, who is 57 years old, earned a six-figure congressional salary from 2001 to 2013. Before being elected to the House, Mr. Pence was a talk-radio host in Indiana. His disclosure states he is paid $173,860 as Indiana’s governor. “Our family has been honored to serve our state and nation,” Mr. Pence said in a statement released by the Trump campaign. “Like many American families, we have been fortunate and blessed to raise three wonderful children and put them through college while doing work that we love.” The Trump campaign said Mr. Pence “will release his tax returns in the near future.” Mr. Trump has said he will not release his tax returns because he says he is under an audit from the Internal Revenue Service. Mr. Trump’s attorney, Michael Cohen, said on CNN on Wednesday that he will not allow Mr. Trump to make his tax returns public until the audit is completed. On the form, Mr. Pence listed as assets a defined-benefit Indiana pension worth up to $1 million and up to $30,000 in other state retirement accounts. He has at most $45,000 in cash and college savings accounts and at least $95,000 in student loans taken out for his three children. He doesn’t list any holdings in stocks, mutual funds or rental property. Those totals don’t include the value of any real estate that he doesn’t rent out. And it doesn’t include any federal pension or defined-contribution retirement plan he has from his time in the U.S. House of Representatives. Those assets aren’t required to be listed on the form, which is designed to reveal conflicts of interest, not net worth.)

— SENATE RACE BETWEEN KIRK, DUCKWORTH HEATS UP – Charles Thomas
http://abc7chicago.com/politics/senate-race-between-kirk-duckworth-heats-up/1477047/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The race for the United States Senate seat in Illinois is heating up as Democratic challenger Tammy Duckworth unleashed new political attacks on incumbent Mark Kirk. Kirk was in Republican stronghold DuPage County Friday as he tries to unify the party behind what has become his maverick reelection campaign. After Sen. Kirk addressed the Naperville Chamber of Commerce, media members were asked to leave the room during the question and answer session. Later, Kirk explained the stroke he survived in 2012 makes question and answer sessions difficult. “That’s just a Kirk thing. I’ll take the hit for that. Ok,” Kirk said. The senator, whose bus tour took him to Republican Day in Springfield this week, reaffirmed his decision to vote for someone than his own party’s presidential nominee Donald Trump or Democrat Hillary Clinton. He is also one of only three Republican senators to support a confirmation hearing for President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland. Kirk said his self-described independent, fiscally conservative, socially moderate politics are needed now more than ever. “With such bad choices between Clinton and Trump, who we decide should be our senator is all the more important now,” Kirk said.)

SUBURBAN LIFE
— Efforts to restore McKee House continue  Limestone building near Glen Ellyn was built in 1936 – ERIC SCHELKOPF
http://www.mysuburbanlife.com/2016/08/18/efforts-to-restore-mckee-house-continue/a7hm441/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Bobbi Wheatley believes that the 80-year-old McKee House needs to be preserved.  “I think it is a very historically relevant building,” the Glen Ellyn resident said. “It’s part of the historical corridor along St. Charles Road.” Wheatley attended a meeting on Aug. 18 organized by the McKee Preservation Group, which is commitment to restoring and giving an adaptive reuse to the limestone building. The house was constructed in 1936 for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County. The building is located on the Glen Ellyn-Lombard border in Churchill Woods and has been vacant since 2002. Forest Preserve District staff members have recommended the building be razed because of the high cost to repair it. The McKee Preservation Group is circulating a petition against the demolition of the building. The petition states the house should be preserved for its “historic, architectural, cultural and aesthetic importance.” “The [Forest Preserve] commissioners need to be better stewards of the property they own, or they will get booted out,” Wheatley said. Wheatley signed the group’s petition as well as others attending the meeting, including Glen Ellyn resident Karen Parkinson, who also thinks the McKee House should be preserved and reused. “I feel there are a lot of uses for it,” Parkinson said. “I think the ambiance of the location would enhance the event.” Forest Preserve District of DuPage County commissioner Tim Whelan wants to build support – and funds – for preserving the McKee House. Whelan said he would like to garner $10 donations from 5,000 people – totaling $50,000 – which would be used toward the building’s preservation. “I feel like my board will speak to me if there is a groundswell of support, along with funds,” he has said. McKee Preservation Group member Andrew Van Gorp said he would like to see the McKee House used as a bicycle way station to serve the bike trails in the area. The meeting was held in the Glen Ellyn Park District’s Lake Ellyn Boathouse, which was built in 1937 as a Works Progress Administration project and was recently restored. In July, Glen Ellyn Park District Board of Commissioners President Jay Kinzler wrote a letter to Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President Joe Cantore stating that while the Park District is not in a position to contribute capital funding towards repairs and restoration of the McKee House, “we certainly value historic assets and believe the McKee House is worthy of saving if at all possible.” In the letter, Kinzler said the Park District would consider using the McKee House for programming opportunities if it was preserved. Glen Ellyn Park Board Commissioner Kathy Cornell said that one of the possible uses for the building could be as an outdoor learning lab. “It is a terrific setting,” Cornell said. Glen Ellyn Historic Preservation Commissioner John Schreiber also expressed a desire to save the building and reuse it. “The beauty of the building is special,”Schreiber said. “It was designed to blend with the natural environment around it…It is all handcrafted. Our goal is to make this building whole and open to the public for public use.” More information about the McKee Preservation Group is at its Facebook page at @SavetheMcKeeHouse.)

SEATTLE TIMES
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Anti-Trumps explain “Why voters should make the GOP pay for backing Trump.”  What do you do?  How strongly have the anti-Trumps blamed you for Trump’s successes? The fewer votes that Trump gets in Illinois, the sooner that the Democrat plants, Libertarian plants, Green plants, and RINOs who dominate the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) a) will get rid of those like me who support the traditional filmily, right to life, immigration, illegal drugs, Second Amendment, and the rest of the planks in the IRP platform and b) destroy the IRP.
