(FROM THE ARTICLE: Now, Walsh faces the potentially difficult task of building a campaign in the short few months before the election. She will run against Mary Edly-Allen, a teacher from Libertyville, in the race to represent a central and southern Lake County district in the state legislature. Lake County Republican Party Chairman Mark Shaw said he voted for Walsh because he thinks she will be a good lawmaker and able to set up a campaign in a hurry. “I know how tenacious she can be and how hard a worker she can be,” Shaw said. Shaw said Walsh was picked from about 20 contenders to replace Sauer.)

https://www.dailyherald.com/business/20180819/ceo-pay-jumps-to-19m-annually-as-fears-mount-over-the-wealthy-pocketing-gains
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The top executives of America’s biggest companies saw their average annual pay surge to $18.9 million in 2017, according to a report released Thursday, fueling concerns about the gulf between the nation’s richest and everyone else. The dramatic 18 percent jump in chief executive pay came as wages for American workers remained essentially flat, pushing the gap between executive compensation and employee pay to its highest point in about a decade. The rise in executive pay shown in the report by the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank, is driven largely by the big increases in the stock market over the past year. The bulk of CEO compensation is made up of stock grants or stock options, which can lead to substantial paydays for CEOs when companies perform well in the market. The Standard & Poor’s stock market index jumped 14.5 percent in value from 2016 to 2017 when adjusting for inflation, EPI said. From 2009 to 2017, average pay for the nation’s CEOs jumped by $7.8 million, or by 72 percent, according to the report. Over that period, the average wages and benefits for a typical American worker rose from $53,400 to $54,600, or by about 2 percent, the report said. “It speaks to the degree the economic recovery is unbalanced,” said Larry Mishel, an economist who has tracked the CEO-worker pay ratio for two decades and co-authored the report with Jessica Schieder.)

https://www.thenewamerican.com/tech/computers/item/29814-trump-slams-social-media-censorship-of-conservatives-files-discrimination-complaint-against-facebook
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Social Media is totally discriminating against Republican/Conservative voices,” and “the Trump Administration … won’t let that happen.” So wrote President Trump on Twitter Saturday, in a shot across the bow of increasingly Orwellian social-media companies. This comes on the heels of a Friday discrimination complaint the administration filed against Facebook alleging that “the way the company targets ads can be used to screen out people based on race, sex or other protected categories,” reports the Washington Times. While the latter complaint doesn’t relate to the censorship issue, it perhaps does signal the Trump administration’s determination to deal with social-media sleight-of-hand. As for its substance, the Times explains: The complaint goes to the heart of Facebook’s business model, which depends on being able to offer advertisers micro-targeting. “Facebook mines extensive user data and classifies its users based on protected characteristics. Facebook’s ad targeting tools then invite advertisers to express unlawful preferences by suggesting discriminatory options,” the Housing and Urban Development Department said in the complaint. Among those options are physical disabilities, parents with children and even religious practices — advertisers are allowed to show their ads only to people Facebook deems interested in “Jesus” or the “Christian Church,” for example.)

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Transferring between federal agencies – Dave Diersen
http://www.gopillinois.com

(THE ARTICLE: In 1980, when I was 31 years old, I took a $19,203 (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO – a downgrade from GS-12 Step 5 (currently $91,880) to GS-9 Step 10 (currently $72,677). According to the Office of Personnel Management, 77% of current federal employees have worked for only one agency, 15% have worked for two agencies, and only 8% have worked for three or more agencies. I worked for the Post Office 1966-1969, for IRS 1971-1980, and for GAO 1980-1997. I should write a book about transferring between federal agencies.

GAO audits IRS. In 1980, when I was 31 years old, my Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates vehemently opposed my transferring from IRS to GAO. Instead of my taking a $19,203/year (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars, they wanted me to transfer in as an intern and take a $58,902/year (64%) pay cut in today’s dollars (a downgrade from GS-12 Step 5 to GS-4 Step 1). To justify that, they viciously demonized, viciously denigrated, and viciously condemned a) the knowledge of IRS that I had gained by working for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880; b) my having passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979; c) my having almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul; d) my having earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976; and e) the fact that much of what GAO Analysts do is similar to what IRS Revenue Officers do.

They hinted/implied/argued that IRS should NOT have a) hired me in 1971, b) promoted me in 1972, 1973, or 1974, or c) let me work there for almost 9 years. They hinted/implied/argued that the Post Office should NOT have a) hired me in 1966 or b) let me work there for almost 3 years. They were disgusted, outraged, and beyond furious that I transferred in with almost 12 years of federal seniority, 30 unused vacation days, and more than 100 unused sick days. They hinted/implied/argued/shouted that legislative branch employees were far superior to executive branch employees. They stressed that I had been a union member while I worked for the Post Office and for IRS and that I had filed grievances.

To turn everyone at GAO against me, they stressed to GAO employees a) who were Democrats, that I was a Republican, b) who were liberal or moderate, that I was conservative, c) who were non-Protestant, that I was a Missouri Synod Lutheran, d) who had less money than my wife and I had, that my wife and I had more money than they did, e) who were non-German American, that I was 100% German American, f) who had ancestors who had not been in America for a long time, that my ancestors had been in America since 1844, and g) who were veterans, that I was a draft avoider. They would not have done any of the aforesaid if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, or a veteran.

Have you worked in toxic workplaces? Soon after I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old, I learned how toxic its Chicago office was for those who shared my demographics. Nevertheless, I counted on the GAO manager who had arranged for my transfer a) to protect me from political affiliation discrimination, from reverse discrimination, and from age discrimination, b) to get me assigned to audits of IRS, c) to get me promoted to GS-11 Step 10 (currently $87,933), to GS-12 Step 5 (currently $91,880), to GS-13 Step 1 (currently $96,403), etc. However, ever-increasingly, the Democrats who ran the office did everything that they could to get rid of him. Nevertheless, in 1986, he succeeded a) in getting me assigned to audits of IRS and b) in promoting me to GS-13 Step 1 (currently $96,403). However, the Democrats succeeded a) in getting rid of him in 1987, b) in throwing me off audits of IRS in 1989, c) in keeping me off audits of IRS for the rest of my GAO career, d) in giving me unfair performance expectations and unfair performance appraisals, e) in always ranking me the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, and f) in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old.)

I worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880. (FROM THE ARTICLE: I’m terrible with cars. I mean, can’t-so-much-as-change-a-spark-plug terrible. May I tune yours up for you? I’m bad in the kitchen, too. Eggs and toast are pretty much my whole repertoire, and I tend to burn the toast. Want me to cater your next event? You’d probably rather call a chef, or a mechanic. Expertise matters. Except when it comes to filling the top leadership posts in our democracy. Then, it seems, we’re ready to take a chance on those who have never led so much as a school board meeting. How often have you heard a candidate for governor, senator, even president boast that his or her complete lack of lower-rung political experience is a shimmering plus rather than a glaring minus? And how does that usually work out? Think about disgraced ex-Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens. Think about our current chaos president. Why do we imagine that high political leadership is the one job best left to the amateurs? Picture your dentist using that logic: I’ve never actually worked on teeth before. I’m proud to be an “outsider.” Open wide! That’s basically what’s unfolding right now in Illinois. For the second consecutive election, voters in the Land of Lincoln this November will choose a mega-wealthy governor who has never held any lower political office, and who only got to this one with a massive boost from his personal checkbook. We know this will be true regardless of the election result, because it’s a description that fits both of the major-party candidates. Sure, incumbent Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner can claim four years of on-the-job training, but given his performance during that time, it’s not much of a claim. He had never held any political office before buying into his first gubernatorial term in 2014 with $27.6 million from his own pocket. A venture capitalist, what he brought with him from that world were boardroom skills that you can’t say have been unproductive in office — because they’ve been counterproductive in office. As for Hyatt Hotels heir and Democratic nominee J.B. Pritzker, it seems his primary qualification for governor, and the main reason his party handed him the nomination over more experienced Democrats, is the 10-figure fortune he was born into and his willingness to use it. Rauner is worth nine figures, and Democrats decided to fight fire with more fire. Business people with no political experience who run for high office invariably argue that their business skills are not just an adequate substitute for political skills, but are better. This has never made sense. The goals, rules and responsibilities of business are completely different from those of politics. Rauner’s first term has been a textbook illustration of those differences.)

— Peter Strzok tweets GoFundMe link after FBI firing – here’s how much he’s raised – Carlos Garcia (DIERSEN: According to this article: “After only being active for 12 hours, the donation page reached its goal of $150,000, and increased its goal to $350,000.” What if GoFundMe had existed and I had used it when my Democrat superiors took adverse actions against me? My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)
https://www.theblaze.com/news/2018/08/14/peter-strzok-tweets-gofundme-link-after-fbi-firing-heres-how-much-hes-raised
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Peter Strzok, the anti-Trump FBI official at the center of the “deep state” allegations, opened a new social media account and posted a link asking for donations from the public after being fired Monday. Here’s how much he’s raised Strzok opened a Twitter account Monday after being fired from the bureau and posted just one message on the social media service. It was a statement explaining how the Deputy Director of the FBI had overruled the decision to punish Strzok with “a 60-day suspension and demotion from supervisory duties was the appropriate punishment.” “This decision should be deeply troubling to all Americans,” the letter continued. The statement made the claim that “the decision to terminate was taken in response to political pressure, and to punish Special Agent Strzok for political speech protected by the First Amendment, not on a fair and independent examination of the facts.” “It is a decision that produces only one winner – those who seek to harm our country and weaken our democracy,” the statement concluded. “The FBI and the American people deserve better.” Strzok included a link to a GoFundMe donation page. After only being active for 12 hours, the donation page reached its goal of $150,000, and increased its goal to $350,000. The page stated that the funds would go towards Strzok’s legal defense and his loss of income. Allies of the president have used the released texts from Strzok to his mistress and FBI lawyer Lisa Page to substantiate claims of an orchestrated effort to defeat the president and his policies. Strok denied that the texts proved anything beyond his personal contempt for the president, and the Inspector General’s report said there was no evidence his personal bias interfered with his professional conduct. Nevertheless, Trump and his supporters say that the bias in Strzok’s texts prove that the special counsel’s Russian investigation was begun under dubious circumstances and should be immediately shut down.)

In addition to Wisconsin, the open seat races in Michigan and Iowa are possible pickup opportunities. In Illinois, GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner is viewed as the most vulnerable Republican in the country, and Democrats are hoping that the deep pockets of Hyatt hotel chain heir J.B. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Dozens of White House aides have signed NDAs in exchange for working for Trump, who has long relied on such agreements in his business career, according to current and former administration employees. But NDAs have not been widely used by past administrations outside the transition time between presidents, in part because most legal experts believe such agreements are not legally enforceable for public employees. Copies of Trump NDAs obtained by The Washington Post or described by current and former aides lay out breathtakingly broad prohibitions on behavior and appear to be drawn heavily from similar contracts used in the past by the Trump Organization, the president’s family firm. Under one agreement from the 2016 campaign, signers promised not to “demean or disparage publicly” Trump, his company or any member of his family — and also not to assist any other politician exploring a federal or state office. An agreement circulated in the White House last year barred signers from sharing any information they had learned in the building, according to several aides who signed the document. And the agreement proposed to Manigault Newman after her firing from the White House would have forbidden her from releasing derogatory information not only about Trump and his family, but about Vice President Pence and his family as well.)

They hinted/implied/argued/shouted that non-veterans like me should pay the price of Affirmative Action, Diversity, Inclusion, and downsizing, and that a) that instead of me, the Post Office should have hired a veteran in 1966, b) that the Post Office should gotten rid of me much sooner than it did so that a veteran could have my job, c) that instead of me, IRS should have hired a veteran in 1971, d) that instead of me, IRS should have promoted veterans in 1972, 1973, and 1974, e) that instead of me, GAO should have hired a veteran in 1980, f) that instead of me, GAO should have promoted a veteran in 1986, and g) that GAO should have gotten rid of me much sooner than it did so that a veteran could have my job and my preferred corner office.)

FORBES
— Age Discrimination By Employers Is Common, AARP Survey Says (DIERSEN: All my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes promote age discrimination.)
https://www.forbes.com/sites/nextavenue/2018/08/12/age-discrimination-by-employers-is-common-aarp-survey-says/#36c0942b2cc5
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The vast majority of Americans who work into in their 50s, 60s and beyond need to keep making money as they grow older but encounter widespread age discrimination in job hunts and at the workplace, a new AARP survey has found. AARP surveyed 3,900 people age 45 and older who were working full-time or part-time or looking for work and learned that more than nine in 10 older workers see age discrimination as common. And 61% say they’ve personally seen or experienced it. Women are more likely than men to have seen or experienced age discrimination, according to the survey. More than three quarters of African-American respondents, 60% of Latinos and 59% of whites reported seeing or experiencing it. What AARP Says About Age Discrimination “Older workers want to work, they’re ready to work and they need to work,” said Susan Weinstock, AARP’s vice president of financial resilience. “They should have the opportunity to be judged on their merits, rather than their age.” But the survey results strongly suggest older job applicants routinely are denied that opportunity. Since turning 40, a striking 30% of respondents experienced at least one of these six actions and 17% experienced two or more: not getting hired for a job they applied for because of their age; heard negative remarks related to their older age from a colleague; passed up for a chance to get ahead because of their age; heard negative remarks related to their older age from a supervisor; were laid off, fired or forced out of job because of their age or were denied access to training or professional development opportunities because of their age. Among respondents who’ve applied for a new position in the past two years, 44% said they were asked for age-related information such as birth dates and graduation years. Such information is often used to discriminate against older applicants and requests for it discourage many older workers from applying, according to AARP. Fears of Getting Hired After a Job Loss About one third of the survey respondents said they doubted they’d be able to quickly land another job if theirs was eliminated. Almost half of them said the major reason would be age discrimination. Government data shows that nearly one third of workers 55 and older who lose their jobs are unemployed a financially-dangerous six months or more. By contrast, just 18% of those ages 16 to 54 are out of work similar periods. The AARP survey also suggests that most older workers don’t think they have much protection against age discrimination. While a majority reported seeing or experiencing age bias, barely 3% said they’d filed a formal complaint with an employer or government agency.)

To force me to resign in 1969, my Democrat Park Forest Post Office superiors said that I would not be available to work enough hours even though I was available to work each and every Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, holiday, and every day that NIU was not in session. They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, and/or a veteran.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-edit-aldermen-schedule-fair-workweek-20180807-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The ordinance would require Chicago employers to post work schedules for their employees at least two weeks in advance. Employers would be required to pay their employees for at least one hour extra if the schedule changed or work was added or subtracted. Companies also could face fines of $500 for each employee affected in each pay period if they fail to comply. If employers make changes with 24 hours’ notice or less to on-call workers, the workers would have to be compensated. Companies with hourly employees or salaried workers earning less than $50,000 annually would be affected. That would sweep thousands of Chicago businesses under the new rules, the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce says. There’s a lot more heavy-handedness in the 17-page ordinance affecting hiring, part-time workers and flexibility. Before they begin work, for example, new hires must be given in writing the median number of hours they can expect to work and a list of days and times they will not be expected to work.)

A memo shared with The Associated Press on Wednesday and dated July 20 spells out orders to high-ranking Army officials to stop processing discharges of men and women who enlisted in the special immigrant program, effective immediately. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Controversial Fox News host Laura Ingraham is once again the target of criticism, this time over comments she made about the country’s changing demographic landscape, which she blamed on illegal — and legal — immigration. “Massive demographic changes have been foisted upon the American people, and they are changes that none of us ever voted for, and most of us don’t like,” Ingraham said on The Ingraham Angle on Wednesday night, noting that “it does seem like the America that we know and love doesn’t exist anymore.” “From Virginia to California, we see stark examples of how radically, in some ways, the country has changed,” Ingraham continued. “Now, much of this is related to both illegal, and in some cases legal, immigration that, of course, progressives love.”)

My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes stress that I promote planks in the Republican Party and IRP platforms, including their traditional family, right to life, immigration, Second Amendment, illegal drugs, equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) planks, that they want the IRP, DCRCC, and MTRCC to dump.)
https://qconline.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/republican-party-withdraws-support-for-fawell-over-conspiracy-theories/article_f4ccfbc6-d3f8-50f1-a445-1f486039d573.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican party officials are withdrawing support for 17th Congressional District candidate Bill Fawell after reviewing alleged conspiracy theories posted by Fawell on social media. Fawell, 64, will face U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-Moline, in the November general election. State Republican party chairman Tim Schneider, Rock Island County Republican party central committee chair Drue Mielke, and Republican state central committeeman for the 17th Congressional District, Jan Weber, removed their support of Fawell on Tuesday. All three officials cite posts on Fawell’s campaign Facebook page, Elect Fawell, in which Fawell appears to support 9/11 conspiracy theories, and called some mass shootings “false flag” events. A false flag is an event in which some believe the government or another group orchestrated a tragic event in order to elicit outrage from the public and provides an excuse for war or some other aggressive reaction. Fawell said Tuesday that the goal of his Elect Fawell Facebook page is to get people to read information from alternate news sources. “What I try to do is put in posts from bloggers that are not mainstream,” Fawell said. “I call it the daily lie of omission. It might be something off the beaten path that is not being reported by mainstream media.” Fawell often posts articles from alt-right-wing sites like zerohedge.com, newzsentinel.com, libertyblitzkrieg.com, and gatestoneinstitute.org, and adds his commentary above the post, often with the caps lock on. But Fawell also links to articles from independent news outlets such as CNBC.com, businessinsider.com, and economist.com. . .In a statement Tuesday, Schneider called Fawell a liar and said his comments have hurt those affected by tragic events. “Bill Fawell has a problem with the truth and his statements have done a disservice to the individuals who lost their lives from terrible acts of violence,” Schneider said. “As chairman of the Illinois Republican party, I disagree with his misguided views and cannot support his candidacy for Congress in the 17th Congressional District.” . . . Fawell told a Dispatch-Argus reporter on Tuesday he hadn’t received any support from the Republican party anyway. “The Republican party in Illinois in such disarray,” Fawell said. “It’s just a reaction to some stuff that came out in the left-wing media. The party cut me loose a long time ago. I’m not their candidate. I’ve been a Republican my whole life, but the American people have had it with both parties. I appeal to the independent voters.” . . . Fawell stands by his comments. “I want to start focusing on the things that are important in this race, not these crazy cheap shots,” Fawell said. “Obviously I’m very disappointed in the Republican party. Nobody has taken the time to call me up and talk to me. They just keep reading all these left-leaning reports like CNN, which is called the Clinton News Network. “I wear the badge proudly of being excommunicated by the (party) of the state of Illinois. Now independents will say, ‘he’s our guy.’”)

— Former Illinois workers sue administration to get jobs back (DIERSEN: Have you sued your employer? I did. GAO hired me in 1980 when Elmer B. Staats was the Comptroller General, but in 1981, Charles A. Bowsher became Comptroller General. Bowsher came from Arthur Andersen and believed in “up or out” for employees who were White, male, and/or non-veteran, but NOT for employees who were minority, female, and/or veteran. Under Bowsher, GAO did everything it could to get rid of its employees like me a) who were White, male, and/or non-veteran and b) who had not made GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40. Beyond overwhelmingly, GAO’s employees who were Republican like me were White, male, and/or non-veteran and had NOT made the aforesaid promotions. In 1988, when I was 40 years old, I became an active member in a class action lawsuit that charged GAO with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation. In 1998, I filed a class action lawsuit that charged GAO with political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation. It was transferred to Chicago in 2000. https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511476824-q1-real-estate-sales-report-wheaton
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Median prices declined in Wheaton over last year, and are down 63.3 percent over 10 years, adjusted for inflation, according to first quarter sales data collected by BlockShopper.com. From January to March, 12 homes sold in Wheaton for a median price of $126,600. That’s 57.5 percent lower than median home sale prices for the first quarter of 2017. In the first quarter, 1 home in Wheaton was in foreclosure. Median property tax for homeowners in Wheaton was $6,744.62 in 2017 according to tax data from that year. That means homeowners pay 2.3 percent of their home’s value in taxes. Statewide, Illinois homeowners pay an effective property tax rate of 2.22 percent, according to a recent analysis by ATTOM Data Solutions, which is the second-highest rate in the country, just behind New Jersey, where homeowners pay a tax rate of 2.28 percent.)

— Trouble in the Evangelical Covenant Church – Laurie Higgins (DIERSEN: In 1961, when I was in 8th grade at Trinity Lutheran Grade School in Crete, there was lots of trouble in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Crete. The pastor succeeded in splitting the church, that is, in getting the majority of its members to dump the Missouri Synod and joint the more conservative Wisconsin Synod. http://www.nprillinois.org/post/idot-staff-assistants-sue-get-jobs-back#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In 2016, Rauner issued a press release saying his administration had ended a “patronage hiring scandal” at the Illinois Department of Transportation. At issue were hundreds of people who’d gotten so-called staff assistant jobs under former governors Rod Blagojevich and Pat Quinn. These were political hires into jobs that should have been protected from that sort of thing. Attorney Don Craven says the eight workers suing Rauner eventually made their way into non-political jobs, but that didn’t save them. He says their firing was political. “This allegation is that these people were fired by IDOT because they’re Democrats and they refused to become affiliated with the Rauner administration,” Craven says. “That’s precisely what the first amendment says you can’t do — you can’t fire people because of their political affiliation.” The lawsuit is seeking to get the employees reinstated — with seniority, back pay and benefits. Asked for comment, the Rauner administration did not directly address the allegations in the lawsuit. Spokeswoman Patty Schuh says the administration has been “working hand-in-hand with the [Office of the Executive Inspector General’s] hiring monitoring unit and the court-appointed special master to clean up the corrupt political system created by previous governors.”)

Some of those comments were directed at some plaintiffs. […] The real reason for the termination of these Plaintiffs was that they were employed by the prior administration (under then Governor Patrick Quinn who was a member of the Democratic Party) or that they refused to become affiliated with the Rauner Administration. * Pretext… Despite the long-standing policy of IDOT to review and update job descriptions of employees, at no time after their reassignments did supervisory personnel, or personnel in the Bureau of Personnel verify the accuracy of Plaintiffs’ job descriptions or update the job descriptions to more accurately reflect the work being assigned to each Plaintiff. Defendants then used the job descriptions, which were intentionally allowed to become outdated as the pretense to terminate the employment of these Plaintiffs.)

Asking for unlimited, free access to our website is the online equivalent of stealing a paper from the store. We can’t stay in business if we give our product away for free. We’ve had a paywall on our site for more than five years, but until recently, if you were coming to an article from social media, our content was free to view. Today, if a reader accesses more than 10 stories in a 30-day period, we will ask them to subscribe to continue reading our work, regardless of which source they use to find our journalism. Many people hit that limit early in the month. The change is long overdue and should have been made years ago. At the Standard-Times, we employ more than 25 people, 11 of them journalists who live in and love San Angelo. This doesn’t include the contract delivery personnel who deliver the print edition each day. These people work hard to bring important news to our audience. This award-winning staff keeps readers updated about events in town, attends countless public meetings and spends nights and weekends bringing you up-to-the-minute sports content. They request public records (and often fight for them) so you know what’s happening in your government. They report on breaking news so you know how you can keep yourself and your family safe. Salaries, newsprint, computers, pens, notebooks, smartphones and other reporting tools aren’t free. We spend thousands of dollars annually on criminal court documents alone. That’s on top of hundreds we spent on arrest documents, open records requests and other measures to hold government agencies accountable to the public.)

https://qz.com/1348882/us-household-wealth-for-the-bottom-50-is-half-of-what-it-was-in-2007/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When it comes to wealth, the poorest American households are much worse off than they were in 2007. In fact, they are no better, in terms of wealth, than they were in 1971. . .In contrast, the average household in the bottom 50% had about half as much wealth in 2016 as they did in 2007. Poorer households typically invest in homes and other physical assets, and put little to no money in stocks. As a result, they have not participated in the post-recession wealth recovery.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-facebook-twitter-russians-banned-20180803-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Security researchers argued that Facebook should have been able to move much faster because there were clear signs that the accounts were part of a coordinated campaign. One of the accounts, called “Resisters” on Facebook and Twitter, billed itself on both platforms as a feminist page that emphasized themes of gender equality and female empowerment – with a clear opposition to President Donald Trump’s agenda. . .But Facebook offered little information to explain why it drew that conclusion – besides that the Resisters group briefly had a known account administrator from the Internet Research Agency. On Twitter, the “resisters” account was spelled as “@resistersunion,” but included the name “resisters” in its profile. Facebook’s equivalent, which organized a June protest outside the headquarters of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Washington via its Facebook page, was “Resisters.” The “Resisters” Facebook page had the same profile image as the Twitter account – a red feminist symbol with the letters RS inside it.)

https://www.weeklystandard.com/adam-rubenstein/kid-trump
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, has made it his business to ‘own the libs,’ and business is booming. On July 23, hundreds of students gathered at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., for Turning Point USA’s fourth annual High School Leadership Summit. The four-day event was a sequence of workshops on campus activism and student leadership punctuated by speeches by prominent conservatives, from House whip Steve Scalise and Education secretary Betsy DeVos to rabble-rousers like Sebastian Gorka and Anthony Scaramucci. Backstage at TPUSA events you’ll find facsimiles of both the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Placed on a table with cellophane overlays, the pages aren’t just symbols—and they aren’t there for reference. TPUSA’s speakers and celebrity guests are asked to sign the documents. Scan the pages and you’ll see the John Hancocks of Ann Coulter, Judge Jeanine Pirro, Donald Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow, ex-Fox News star Kimberly Guilfoyle, Donald Trump Jr., and Lara Trump right on top of the Founders’ words. You’ll find the scribbled signatures of Gateway Pundit’s Jim Hoft, Ohio congressman Jim Jordan, Brexit evangelist Nigel Farage, and the NRA’s Dana Loesch. Ginni Thomas, the wife of Clarence Thomas, wrote “TPUSA ROCKS” above her name. RNC spokesperson Kayleigh McEnany printed a Bible verse below hers and added “MAGA.” The documents are a memento of TPUSA events but also a who’s who of the powerbrokers of conservatism in the age of Trump. Charlie Kirk, TPUSA’s founder, calls himself “the luckiest 24-year-old ever to exist.” He started the group six years ago instead of going to college and now has 130,000 high school students, undergrads, and recent college graduates on board in what he calls the fight “to save Western civilization.” He sees himself as a general in the “culture war” and TPUSA’s members as “culture warriors”—effective “disrupters” of the left on campus and eventually across America. Kirk travels nonstop; he spent more than 300 days last year on the road giving speeches and meeting with donors, students, and politicians. Everywhere he goes he spreads the message that “Big Government Sucks” and “Socialism Sucks.” This fall he’s thinking of selling a T-shirt that says, “Bring Back ISIS, Vote Democrat 2018.”)

http://thehill.com/policy/technology/400010-shadowy-facebook-activities-led-to-real-life-trump-protests
(FROM THE ARTICLE: At least three of the events co-organized on Facebook by a group the company now thinks was part of a coordinated disinformation network appear to have been held, and to have been attended by hundreds of people. The events, in New York City and Springfield, Mo., were all co-hosted on Facebook by a group called the Resisters. All three events were critical of President Trump. . .All three events were hosted by what appear to be legitimate groups in addition to the Resisters. Facebook on Tuesday said “inauthentic” groups, including Resisters, created roughly 30 events. Facebook in a call with reporters highlighted fake pages set up by the groups, but said it had no evidence on whether the events actually took place. There is some evidence that the events set up by Resisters were meant to piggy-back on existing, legitimate events by opponents of Trump. Indivisible St. Louis told The Hill that its Springfield event was already being organized when Resisters contacted them on Facebook. They also said that they did not encounter any representatives from Resisters at the protest.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/04/us/politics/brett-kavanaugh-clinton-impeachment.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For nearly seven months, Mr. Kavanaugh, now President Trump’s nominee to replace Justice Kennedy on the Supreme Court, worked for Mr. Starr once again, despite his objections, helping to assemble the case that the president had an affair with Monica Lewinsky and obstructed justice by trying to cover it up. It was Mr. Kavanaugh who pressed Mr. Starr to aggressively question Mr. Clinton on the details of his sexual relationship with Ms. Lewinsky and who drafted the section of Mr. Starr’s report to the House that laid out 11 possible grounds for Mr. Clinton’s impeachment. Mr. Kavanaugh’s decision to return to Mr. Starr’s side plunged him into an immersion course in the brutal ways of Washington combat, forever connecting him to an investigation that Democrats called a partisan witch hunt, foreshadowing the epithet that Republicans now use to describe the efforts of the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III.)

ALABAMA
— JULY 16, 2018 FLASHBACK: Crossover voting ban: What to know before Tuesday’s primary runoff – Leada Gore (DIERSEN: How many crossover voters, that is, voters who cast Republican primary ballots, but vote for Democrats in general elections, that is, voters who are Democrat plants, Libertarian plants, Green plats, or RINOs, are there in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, in Illinois, and in America? I believe there are about 30 in my DuPage County Milton Township Precinct 9 in Wheaton and they are well-organized. Of course, they do not display yard signs for Republican candidates in general elections. Far too many of them treat me very rudely.)
https://www.al.com/news/index.ssf/2018/07/crossover_voting_ban_what_to_k.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Tuesday’s primary runoff will be another test for Alabama’s crossover voting ban. The Alabama Legislature passed a law in 2017 banning crossover voting. The law specifically prohibits voters from casting a ballot for one party in a primary and then switching to the other party to cast a ballot in the runoff. Simply put: If you voted on the Democratic ballot in the primary, you can only vote in the Democratic runoff. If you voted a Republican ballot in the primary, you can only vote in the Republican runoff. If you didn’t vote in the primary, you are free to cast a ballot in whichever party runoff you choose. No matter what your vote, there are no restrictions on the Nov. 6 general election, where you can choose whichever candidate you prefer. Gov. Kay Ivey signed the crossover voting ban law in 2017. At the time, Sen. Tom Whatley, R-Auburn, said the bill “helps the Democrats choose Democratic candidate” and helps “Republicans choose Republican candidates.” Enforcing the ban In the October special U.S. Senate election to replace Jeff Sessions, Secretary of State John Merrill said his office had identified 674 cases in which people voted in the Democratic primary election on Aug. 15, 2017 and then crossed over to vote in the Republican runoff election on Sept. 26, 2017. A later review found most of the voters in question were on the wrong list. One-hundred-forty instances of crossover voting were confirmed but none were deemed necessary by local probate judges to investigate further or pursue prosecution, Merrill’s office said. Merrill has been mum on if crossover violators will be prosecuted this time, however. In an update from his office, Merrill only reminded voters of the rules and encouraged people to get out and vote. “Some candidates for both parties have already been selected, but voters are encouraged to return to the polls to make the final selections for their party representatives,” Merrill said.)
