— Coming Soon to Facebook: Lots of Extreme Political Ads Campaign strategists say the social-media giant’s advertising platform rewards extreme messaging – Georgia Wells and Deepa Seetharaman (DIERSEN: Of course, you never have, and you never will see any kind of paid advertising in GOPUSA emails or on www.gopillinois.com. But if I did take money for such advertising, which activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. would take out ads in GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails and on www.gopillinois.com? What would they would they promote with their advertising?)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/coming-soon-to-facebook-lots-of-extreme-political-ads-1535707802
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Campaign strategists are gearing up to flood Facebook with inflammatory and polarizing ads heading into the midterm elections, saying its advertising platform rewards extreme messaging more than other venues. Such tactics often backfire, partly because extreme ads can be hidden by those who find them disagreeable, Facebook Inc. said. The disconnect highlights the social network’s often-controversial role as a political tool, where Facebook wants to be viewed as a promoter of healthy debate while some believe its platform contributes to divisive civic discourse. Although Facebook didn’t start the trend toward more inflammatory political ads, many candidates and consultants working on midterm campaigns said its cost structure and ability to target narrow slices of voters makes it a uniquely effective tool for motivating people to act in support of a cause or a candidate. “You’re not trying to persuade anybody on Facebook,” said Jeff Roe, whose political-consulting firm Axiom Strategies is one of the biggest buyers of political advertising, largely on behalf of Republican candidates. “You’re trying to reach a different part of people’s brains.”)

— Your Kids Could Lower Your Tax Bill Like Never Before There’s a new tax break for many parents, but it ends when college expenses are approaching – Laura Saunders (DIERSEN: I should write a book about my GAO superiors who hinted/implied/argued/shouted the most that they punished me because my wife and I gave up trying to have children, because we did not adopt, and because we did not become foster parents. However, that was a pretext. In 1989, they pulled out all the stops to get rid of me. They threw me off audits of IRS which were always in-town, assigned me to a nasty 6-month out-of-town audit, gave me unfair performance expectations, and gave me an unfair performance appraisal. The real reason why they did the aforesaid was that in 1988, I had become an active member in a class action lawsuit that charged them with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation. Because of the aforesaid, in 1989, I asked Henry Hyde to come to my defense.)

https://www.lohud.com/story/news/2018/08/29/sell-date-employees-ageism-and-rethinking-retirement/1086814002/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Ageism is widespread and is termed “an insidious practice which has harmful effects on the health of older adults,” by the World Health Organization. Political commentator Bill Maher famously called it the “last acceptable prejudice in America.” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg once publicly noted: “Young people are just smarter.” With 10,000 Baby Boomers reaching 65 every day — a trend which began in 2011 and is set to continue until 2029 — it is past the time to have a conversation around attitudes toward retirement. After all, since the time Social Security set the retirement eligibility age at 65 in 1936, life expectancy at birth has gone up by 20 years. . .Age discrimination occurs when an employer treats an applicant or employee less favorably because of his or her age, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. . .Ageism is hard to prove Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, which protects individuals who are over the age of 40 from discrimination in employment. Half a century later, age discrimination in the workplace remains notoriously hard to prove. Of the 18,376 cases filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2017, only 2.2 percent were found to have a “reasonable cause.” . . . 5 Signs of Age Discrimination (Source: AARP) According to the AARP, there are signs older workers can watch out for: Older workers are being fired or offered buyouts, and younger ones are being hired. The most common term for this is “culture fit.” You are reassigned to unpleasant duties. You start hearing tacky comments about your age. You stop getting raises. Your performance reviews tank.)

IRS hired me in 1971 because it could not find a qualified veteran who would take the job. The Post Office hired me in 1966 because it could not find a qualified veteran who would take the job. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes remain furious that while I worked for the federal government 1966-1969 and 1971-1997, my pay increased every year because of cost-of-living adjustments, step increases, and/or promotions, except for 1980 when I took a $19,203 (26%) pay cut to transfer from IRS to GAO. They are especially furious that I got promoted in 1972, 1973, 1974, and 1986. In my defense, I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)

http://www.news-gazette.com/news/2018-08-24/payment-wrong-ex-wife-earns-candidate-more-time.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A child-support check sent to the wrong ex-wife has given the Libertarian candidate for Illinois governor 30 more days to rectify the late payment. The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports that Grayson “Kash” Jackson of Antioch told a judge Wednesday that a third-party online child-support disbursement firm erroneously sent the $3,067 payment to his first ex-wife in North Carolina. Jackson was found in contempt of court in May for refusing to pay his second ex-wife $6,067 in back child support and other education and health care needs. He was ordered to pay the lesser purge fee to stay out of jail. Parental rights have been a key issue in Jackson’s campaign for governor. He says he is unemployed and living on disability payments from a 20-year Navy career.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-bruce-rauner-immigration-20180824-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner used the opening of the Du Quoin State Fair on Friday to veto “bad bills” to expand rights for immigrants living in Illinois illegally as the governor tries to solidify core rural conservatives Downstate who back President Donald Trump behind his re-election. Rauner told WJPF-AM 1020 in Marion that Illinois’ high number of immigrants who lack documentation “pushes up our unemployment rate and that holds down wages in Illinois and takes jobs away from Americans. We’ve got to stand against that.” The Republican governor also said he has pushed the federal government to require electronic verification of worker residency status in the country. “We increase the penalties for employers who hire illegals rather than Americans, we can really clamp down on illegal immigration and we can lead to more jobs for Americans and higher wages,” he said. Rauner, facing a challenge from Democratic governor candidate J.B. Pritzker, has worked since the primary to try to unify conservatives unhappy with his past approval of measures that expanded abortion, immigration and gay rights. . .Rauner signed two other immigration-related measures — one prohibiting any registry programs involving people due to race or religion and another allowing skilled immigrants to more easily seek licenses for professional activities. The Republican governor called the two new laws “really minor, pretty nothing.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: About 165 Corvettes were involved in the forming of an American flag today, including red, white, blue, silver, and Carlisle Blue Corvettes at the Corvettes at Carlisle show at the Carlisle Fairgrounds. During the grand unveiling of the Corvette flag, at the grandstand, a special salute to service of a reading/recording of “What is an American,” written by Michael Brown, was played. After the playing of Brown’s writing, on-site veterans joined together for a reaffirmation of oath. After the oath, trumpeter Willard Jackson played the service anthems of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. Wesley Wong then led a parade and tribute of first responders past the grandstand stage. Wong was one of the first on-scene during the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. Corvettes at Carlisle brings together thousands of Corvette enthusiasts and Corvettes.)

https://presscorp.org/news/ahead-of-august-28-primary-google-censors-content-for-u-s-senate-candidate-dr-kelli-ward
(FROM THE ARTICLE: After two weeks of unsuccessful petitioning and support consultations, CFO Chris Weir and President Larry Ward of Political Media, Inc. believe their agency’s efforts to promote U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Kelli Ward are being deliberately blocked by Google’s advertising department. For more than two weeks, Weir and Ward have been doing everything “by the book” to promote newly launched Kelli Ward microsite — www.MarthaMcFake.com — on the silicon giant’s advertising platform to no avail. “We’ve been placing digital ads on Google for decades and we have never seen anything like this,” says Ward. “We have been going back and forth with Google ad services for weeks seeking approval to promote MarthaMcFake.com, a single-page microsite exposing candidate Martha McSally’s fake conservatism, and they are playing games with us. With just days left until the August 28 primary for an incredibly hot and closely watched GOP Senate race, this reeks of censorship.” Political Media Chief Financial Officer Chris Weir, who has been in direct communication with Google support, says his conversations with the tech giant have been circular in nature. “They were telling me that our information didn’t match their information: our company name, our address and our EIN,” says Weir. “I was on the phone with four different people, two of which were supervisors and our campaign is still without approval despite weeks of effort and literally hours on the phone.” “The folks at Google said our accounts were reviewed manually then they said they were reviewed by a team. After that they said they were reviewed by an automated system. None of their claims were adding up,” Weir states. “We sent Google their verification form on August 7th and received neither a letter of approval nor a letter of rejection. “Political Media, Inc. is calling on Google to lift the ban on MarthaMcFake.com promotional advertising, an action that directly inhibits free speech rights and the democratic process in advance of the upcoming primary election in Arizona.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Any consultant would say you’ve got to take the other guy down. The poll shows voters have a negative opinion of him by a 2-to-1 margin. Those numbers seem “almost impossible to surmount,” said Axelrod. “But impossible things happen in politics.” Told of Axelrod’s comments, Rauner spokesman Alex Browning responded, “Pundits and public polling were wrong about Bruce Rauner in 2014 and they’ll be wrong again in 2018. With Illinois’ future on the line, voters care about lowering taxes and fighting corruption, not polling and prop bets.”)

— Singapore Says ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Author Skipped Military Service – Austin Ramzy (DIERSEN: Did you avoid the draft? Trump and I did. I should write a book about those who have punished me the most for my avoiding the draft by getting four student draft deferments 1966-1970 and a financial hardship draft deferment 1970-1971.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/22/world/asia/kevin-kwan-crazy-rich-asians-singapore-military.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The author of “Crazy Rich Asians,” the best-selling novel on which the new hit film is based, never fulfilled his national service obligations in Singapore and could face a fine or potential prison term, the country’s Ministry of Defense said Wednesday. The status of the author, Kevin Kwan, was revealed by the authorities one day after the film, which was largely set and filmed in Singapore, made its premiere there. Mr. Kwan did not attend the opening there, although the director, Jon M. Chu, and several of the film’s stars did. Mr. Kwan, 44, left Singapore when he was 11 and moved to Houston. Singapore requires all male citizens to perform two years of service in the military, the police or the civil defense force, generally starting at age 18. Singaporeans are not allowed to renounce their citizenship until they turn 21, and can face legal problems if they try to do so without fulfilling their national service. Some profiles of Mr. Kwan said he became an American citizen at age 18. But Singapore appears to have not given up its claims to him. The Ministry of Defense said Mr. Kwan’s application to renounce his citizenship in 1994 was rejected, as was a subsequent appeal. “Mr. Kwan has committed offenses under the Enlistment Act,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that he could face a fine of up to $7,300 and/or imprisonment of up to three years if convicted.)

My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes continue to be beyond furious that IRS promoted me in 1972, 1973, and 1974 and that GAO promoted me in 1986. (FROM THE ARTICLE: In Crete-Monee Consolidated District 201-U, budget constraints and limited grants have made it “very difficult” to finance needed security measures, said Rochelle Clark, assistant superintendent of district affairs. In the near future, the district hopes to place a school resource officer at its middle and high schools and one to “float” among the elementary buildings, she said. This would not only help monitor student movement during passing periods, school activities and afterschool activities, but would offer an opportunity for officers to build relationships with students and families, she said. All administrators will participate in online training followed by in-person sessions and will work with local police officers to provide “realistic” evacuation and intruder drills, she said. But other challenges to school security include access to the school buildings and varying ideas as to what the students, staff and community “perceive” as safe, Clark said.)

https://www.techrepublic.com/article/the-top-10-most-successful-cities-in-the-us/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Zippia, a career search engine, found the most successful city in every US state. Using Census data from the 2012-2016 American Community Survey PUMS, Zippia ranked cities based on median income, unemployment rate, and education rate (percentage of residents over 25 with a bachelor’s degree). Each city’s success was measured on a scale of 1 to the number of cities in each state, along with the three variables above, and averaged those values to determine an individual index, according to Zippia’s announcement. The lower the score, the better the rating, said Zippia. Here are Zippia’s top 10 most successful US cities in 2018: 1. Glencoe, Illinois. . .Ranked first is Glencoe, Illinois, right outside of Chicago. With a median income of $185,320, unemployment rate of 1.5%, and education rate of 86.7%, Glencoe reigns supreme. In close proximity to Chicago, residents can escape the fast pace of the Windy City, while still being in close proximity to visit.)

FED SMITH

https://www.fedsmith.com/2018/08/15/report-suggests-improvements-handling-federal-employee-misconduct/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: GAO said that an average of less than 1 percent (17,000) of the federal government’s 2.1 million employees are formally disciplined for misconduct annually. While this is a very small number, GAO notes that even a few cases of employee misconduct can have significant impacts on workplace morale and impede an agency’s efforts to achieve its mission. Based on data from the Office of Personnel Management, federal agencies made 10,249 suspensions, 7,411 removals, and 114 demotions for misconduct in 2016. However, GAO said that because of weaknesses in OPM’s data on employee misconduct, which is provided by the agencies, OPM is unable to accurately target supervisory training to address misconduct, and decision-makers do not know the full extent or nature of this misconduct. Examples of employee misconduct can include: time and attendance infractions, intoxication, workplace violence, physical aggression toward an employee, improper use of a government-issued credit card, misuse of government equipment (such as viewing pornography or gambling), use of public position for private gain, behavior that affects national security)

FED WEEK
— Age Discrimination, 50 Years Later – Editorial (DIERSEN: For federal employees who are Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran, age discrimination starts at age 25. The federal government wastes the careers of and gets rid its employees who are Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran who fail to make GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40. Extremely few federal employees make the aforesaid promotions.)
https://www.fedweek.com/publishers-perspective/age-discrimination-50-years-later/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The federal government officially outlawed age discrimination in the workplace 50 years ago and therefore it is now nothing but a distant memory. We now pause for the laughter to die down. Unfortunately, it is still with us—as are a number of other forms of bias also outlawed around the same time, not incidentally—according to the very agency that enforces the law in the federal workplace as in other workplaces, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act was passed in 1967 but its effective date was put off until June of the following year. The law barred discrimination on grounds of age with respect to any term, condition, or privilege of employment; barred retaliation for opposing employment practices that discriminate based on age or for filing an age discrimination charge; and generally barred including age preferences in job notices. Protection against bias on the basis of advanced age was an admirable foresight in a nation awash with young baby boomers. However, “After 50 years of a federal law whose purpose is to promote the employment of older workers based on ability, age discrimination remains too common and too accepted,” says an EEOC report. “Despite decades of research finding that age does not predict ability or performance, employers often fall back on precisely the ageist stereotypes the ADEA was enacted to prohibit.” While quantifying age discrimination is difficult—in part because, like other forms of discrimination it often is not formally reported—“the perception that age discrimination exists in our workplaces is prevalent,” it said. It cited a recent survey finding that more than 6 in 10 workers age 45 and older say they have seen or experienced age discrimination in the workplace and of those, 90 percent say it is somewhat or very common. This most frequently takes the form of unlawful firing, harassment, discriminatory terms of employment and discriminatory discipline, said the assessment of the nationwide workforce whose findings should be of special concern in the generally older federal workforce. For those who don’t have a job and are looking at an older age—such as in the common scenario of a federal employee who retires relatively young and wishes to continue working—things can be even worse. In another survey cited in the report, more than 3 of 4 older workers said their age was an obstacle to finding a job. It also cited studies that have documented age discrimination by employers as reflected by the share of job applicants who are called for an interview when applications contained an age, versus those that were age-neutral. Employers also have been found to be signaling a preference for younger workers by stating that “digital natives” are needed.)

GOVERNMENT EXECUTIVE
— Being a Federal Employee, Simplified – Steve Goodrich (DIERSEN: Good rich should write about Affirmative Action (AA), Diversity, and Inclusion. Goodrich should write about patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation. Goodrich should write about how Democrats use AA, Diversity, and Inclusion to not hire Republicans, to not retain Republicans, to not promote Republicans, and to get rid of Republicans.)
https://www.govexec.com/excellence/management-matters/2018/08/being-federal-employee-simplified/150553/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The average age of a federal employee is pushing closer to the 50-year mark and less than 17 percent of workers are under age 35, pointing to the facts that people are working longer and fewer young people are entering government. Civil service reform discussions have for years focused on streamlining hiring and modernizing the approach to employee compensation, never quite getting any of it done. Some believe federal employees are underpaid, others claim they’re overpaid. Maybe there is just too much noise in the system for some to regard federal employment as a great place to work. Perhaps we need to hit the reset button and take a hard look at what is right. Let’s begin with a basic premise: To obtain a job, you must possess a skill set, or at least the aptitude to develop the skills needed. Employment then becomes a form of contract. The employer agrees to pay the employee money and benefits in exchange for job performance consistent with defined requirements and standards. This should be obvious. However, in today’s environment we need to add a second premise: In a rapidly changing world, jobs and organizations must continually evolve, grow, and adapt to be effective. This applies to government, not just the private sector. It should be easy, right? Unfortunately, it’s not. Achieving the following three things would go a long way toward improving the performance and accountability of federal employees.)
— One Quarter of Suspended Feds Have Been Suspended Before – Eric Katz (DIERSEN: Of course, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes stress the many adverse employment actions that my Democrat superiors in the federal government took against me. My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

August 12 Morning Edition

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Despite 2 voter rejections, Wheaton-Warrenville Community Unit School District 200 plans to construct new building — and gets sued over it – Bob Goldsborough (DIERSEN: What are your connections with this issue? My wife and I have paid real estate taxes big time to District 200 since 1978. We have never attended any District 200 school and we have never sent any child to any District 200 school. The District 200 headquarters is in my precinct as well as Whittier Grade School and Edison Middle School. Janet Shaw is a fellow Milton Township Republican Precinct Committeeman. I know Dan Wagner and his wife. I understand that the lawsuit has been assigned to Judge Bonnie Wheaton.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/ct-met-wheaton-school-preschool-project-20180806-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Twice since 2013, voters in the Wheaton and Warrenville area have rejected referendum proposals to raise taxes for the construction of a new preschool. Despite that, the Community Unit School District 200 board is proceeding with building a new Jefferson Early Childhood Center without voter approval through a different form of financing. But now a resident who opposes that measure has sued the district in DuPage County Circuit Court, seeking to halt the plans. Those in favor of building a new childhood center call the current 26,500-square-foot building outdated and note that the district in recent years has renovated or built anew every other school building except Jefferson. Jefferson, which was constructed in 1958 and had 277 pupils as of June, offers a traditional preschool and early childhood intervention for youths with mental or physical disabilities. Voters rejected a referendum proposal for a new Jefferson school in 2013, and again said no in 2017 as part of a much larger, $132 million proposal involving other district schools as well. Board President Jim Vroman said that after the 2017 referendum proposal failed, the district surveyed voters and found that “a substantial majority” supported building a new Jefferson. “That told us that voters were against the tax increase that the referendum would have generated if we had proceeded,” he said. Instead, the board agreed with a suggestion by a district financial adviser to use lease certificates, or secured lease credit financing, to fund a new Jefferson. District 200 would oversee construction of the estimated $15.5 million, 41,544-square-foot building, while Zions Bank would own the building. . .Frequent board critic Janet Shaw, who runs a blog that scrutinizes the district’s finances, long has questioned the legality of using lease certificates and added that “my real problem is that we don’t need (the new school building).” Shaw has filed suit against District 200, demanding a halt to the current plan to finance a new Jefferson. She is seeking a judge to require District 200’s board to submit a proposal for the new school building to the public via a referendum question. “District 200 is tampering with election results right here in DuPage County,” Shaw said. “The district thinks that by using the magic word ‘lease,’ its two failed referendum efforts and the will of the community are somehow erased and it can proceed in an identical manner as if a referendum had been adopted by the community to build and finance a new school.” A district spokesperson declined to comment on the lawsuit. Dan Wagner, a parent and longtime proponent of a new Jefferson, called the existing building outmoded, with some instruction occurring in converted broom closets. He added that the building lacks air conditioning, which precludes some special needs pupils from participating in gym classes.)

https://chicagocitywire.com/stories/511525061-republican-party-welcomes-union-members-into-leadership-ranks
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Northwest Side (NWS) GOP Club, which touts itself as union-friendly, has added another leader with union ties to its ranks. The club recently announced Erin Jones was appointed precinct committeeman for Chicago’s 39th Ward. “Erin is a rock-star and a loyal member of the NWS GOP Club.” club officials said. “As a first-responder family, Erin and her husband serve the community both on and off-duty. We are happy to have her in a leadership role.” As a committeeman, Jones will represent the GOP voters of the precinct at the county level. “I grew up in Rogers Park and moved to the Northwest Side nine years ago,” Jones said. “I’ve been a Chicago police officer for the last 15 years, spending 10 of those years in patrol on the Westside of the City. I actually started working for the city when I was a teenager as a lifeguard in Rogers Park.” Jones is married to a Chicago firefighter and has two daughters. She was appointed by Matt Podgorski, NWS GOP Club chairman and 39th ward committeeman. The NWS GOP Club also has a party planned for Aug. 11 to welcome its card-carrying union members and encourage other union members to explore the club. Republican candidate and Chicago police sergeant Ammie Kessem is slated to attend the event. Kessem is challenging incumbent Rep. Robert Martwick (D-Chicago) for Illinois’ 19th House District seat in November’s general election.)

According to the EEOC’s lawsuit, Bambi Butzlaff Voss, who was 53 years old and subject to a layoff from her job as a Marketing and Communications Specialist at the University of Wisconsin’s Waukesha campus, applied for six different positions with the University of Wisconsin System’s central office in Madison, including an Associate Marketing and Communications Specialist position. Butzlaff Voss had 25 years of experience performing tasks similar, if not identical, to the ones in the position she applied for. But, because of Butzlaff Voss’s age, the University refused to hire her. Instead, it hired a 23-year-old candidate with less than two years of experience. Such alleged conduct violates the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA). The EEOC sued in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin (EEOC v. Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System, Civil Action No: 3:18-cv-00602) after first trying to settle through its conciliation process. The lawsuit asks the court to order the University to hire Butzlaff Voss and provide back pay as well as pay liquidated damages. The lawsuit also seeks a permanent injunction prohibiting the University from discriminating against future candidates based on their age. “The Age Discrimination in Employment Act has been on the books for five decades,” said Gregory Gochanour, regional attorney for the EEOC’s Chicago District. “The EEOC will make sure employers follow the law, even if it means going to court to get the message across.” Julianne Bowman, district director of the EEOC’s Chicago District, said, “Workers over 40 years of age should have the same opportunities as those workers less than half their age. Ignoring a candidate’s decades of experience relevant to the available job, because of her age, to hire someone with less than two years of experience is illegal discrimination.”)

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/local/gray-matters/article/trump-white-house-media-kaitlan-collins-cnn-13144480.php
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As long as reporters have covered government officials, they’ve sought greater access than the government was willing to allow. The White House excluded a CNN reporter from an international trade announcement with the president of the European Commission on July 25, in apparent retaliation after she shouted unwelcome questions at President Donald Trump during an Oval Office appearance. Many observers viewed this move as an escalation of the Trump administration’s hostility toward journalists. The Washington Post called the decision to exclude CNN’s Kaitlan Collins “highly unusual and possibly unprecedented.” Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., called it “an offense against the First Amendment interests of all of us.” But did the White House actually violate the Constitution? As a media law professor, I regularly remind students that the First Amendment right of access to government officials, records and events is surprisingly uncertain. The First Amendment guarantees all Americans freedom to speak and publish without government interference. It has been broadly interpreted by the Supreme Court to forbid the government from restraining or punishing a speaker based on the content of the speaker’s message. While journalists have a clearly established First Amendment right to publish the news they’ve gathered — even in extreme cases, like the leak of stolen Pentagon documents — it’s much less clear that the First Amendment protects the right to gather the news in the first place. A right to publish, but not a ‘right to gather’? CNN has not indicated that it plans to take any legal action over Collins’ exclusion. In addition to being awkward — imagine a journalist taking the witness stand to testify against the White House communications director — a court case over a withdrawn invitation would face legal obstacles. The courts have refused to recognize an overarching “constitutional right of access” to government information. Instead, they have picked off cases with narrow, specific rulings. For instance, the Supreme Court recognized in Richmond Newspapers v. Virginia that there is a constitutional right to cover a criminal trial. Likewise, federal appeals courts agree the First Amendment guarantees the right to videotape police making arrests in a public place. At the same time, judges have found no constitutional right to obtain government documents or to enter crime scenes that are off-limits to the public. Does CNN’s White House correspondent, or any journalist, have a First Amendment “right” to a press pass or a spot at a news conference? Since the Supreme Court said in its 1972 Branzburg ruling that journalists have no right to insist on greater access than the general public, probably not. That being said, journalists do have a right not to be retaliated against, regardless of what form the retaliation takes. Retaliatory exclusions can violate the law Even if attending a White House event is not a constitutionally guaranteed right, that doesn’t mean the government is free to take it away as a punishment. The government cannot take away even a purely discretionary privilege if the motive is to penalize speech. Even though there is no entitlement to hold a government job, the Supreme Court decided in 1966 that public employment cannot be denied on the basis of viewpoint. And even though there is no entitlement to receive a discretionary government grant, the justices ruled in 2013 that a grant cannot be denied because the applicant expresses a view different from the government’s. In other words, any action by a government agency intended to punish or deter a speaker for unwanted speech can violate the Constitution. That same legal principle would apply today if a federal official denied a government “privilege” to a journalist on the basis of a disagreeable viewpoint. In the CNN situation, if Collins lost something of value, like the ability to attend a presidential appearance, because of the content of her speech, she has the essential ingredients of a First Amendment case. The White House likely would argue that it was Collins’ method of delivery — raising her voice, after being asked not to — and not the content of her message that earned her a disinvitation. That would make a First Amendment claim blurrier. overnment agencies can regulate the “time, place and manner” of speaking, the Supreme Court has ruled, as long as the restrictions are reasonable and enforced evenhandedly. Were a case to go to court, Collins and CNN might have to demonstrate that other journalists have shouted friendlier questions without consequence. Journalists’ rights need clarifying)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Republican candidate for California governor has released his first campaign advertisement since winning the primary election in June. It’s titled “Help is on the Way,” and focuses on the platforms John Cox highlighted throughout his campaign such as unaffordable home and rent costs, the state’s infrastructure, rising poverty rates and the gas tax. The businessman, who lives in San Diego, has an uphill battle to catch Democrat Gavin Newsom. The current lieutenant governor has a commanding lead in the contest to succeed Governor Jerry Brown. According to the latest poll numbers from the Public Policy Institute of California, 55 percent of likely voters favored Newsom to Cox’s 31 percent.)

EQUIPMENT WORLD
— JULY 23, 2013 FLASHBACK: The corrosive damage ethanol gasoline does to your fuel pump – Tom Jackson (DIERSEN: In my opinion, ethanol did thousands of dollars in damages to my 1972 Chevy Corvette.)
https://www.equipmentworld.com/e-10-alive-the-corrosive-damage-ethanol-gasoline-does-to-your-fuel-pump/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Its a nearly-new fuel pump from a 2003 Harley Davidson with just 11,000 miles on it. How could that much corrosion happen on a motorcycle before it’s third oil change? According to my mechanic it’s ethanol in our gasoline. To understand how this happens you need to know how ethanol affects your fuel system. Ethanol itself is not particularly corrosive. When the oil companies first started blending ethanol in gas, it corroded some rubber and plastic gaskets on some cars and equipment. Manufacturers figured it out and substituted new materials. The unlucky consumers whose equipment was ruined or whose fuel systems had to be replaced just took it on the chin as per usual with most government programs. But that wasn’t the end of it. Ethanol attracts water. When the two get together, they create the perfect environment to grow a type of bacteria called acetobacter. After getting drunk on their EPA-sponsored kegger in your gas tank, the acetobacter excrete acetic acid. And acetic acid is very corrosive. If you’re refilling your gas tank every week or two, acetobacter don’t have time to grow a sufficient size colony to damage metal parts in your fuel system. But if your fuel sits for longer periods of time these microorganisms continue to multiply until your gas tank contains damaging levels of acetic acid.)
