O’Donnell  (DIERSEN: Yes, but what if the adverse actions that your former employer took against you are so severe that you can never get a job that is appropriate for someone with your education, work experience, professional certifications, and professional licenses?)

— Spotting the saboteurs  Insidious employees can slowly wreak havoc.  How to recognize them. – Jeff Haden  (DIERSEN: The Democrat Party platform promotes race and gender based preference giving.  My Democrat superiors in the federal government viewed their employees as being saboteurs if they did not promote the Democrat Party platform and especially if they refused to help them get rid of their employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and or non-veteran.)

DAILY HERALD
— FRONT PAGE: Where DuPage districts stand after summer contract talks – Katlyn Smith and Jessica Cilella (DIERSEN: Who demonizes you, denigrates you, and/or condemns you the most as being overpaid or having been overpaid?  For me, it is those who hate government employees and who especially hate federal employees. I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years. Many millions have not and will not seek a job with the federal government a) because the pay and benefits are terrible, b) because the advancement opportunities are terrible, c) because they lack required education, work experience, professional certifications, and/or professional licenses, d) because they cannot pass an employment examination, e) because they cannot pass a background investigation, f) because they cannot pass a physical examination, g) because they cannot take the demonization, denigration, and condemnation that comes with being a federal employee or federal retiree, and/or h) because they are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and they know that the federal government discriminates against its employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)

Kresges 1964-1966.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160815/news/160819463/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: One of the largest public employee pension systems in the state is questioning whether Elk Grove Village’s mayor and five of its trustees work enough hours to be eligible for pensions. A three-page letter sent by the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund’s general counsel to village officials asks for documentation showing elected village board members work at least 1,000 hours a year — the threshold to be eligible for a pension.)

FORBES
— Trump Nation: Does Income Inequality Now Define The U.S. Economy? – Nathaniel Parish Flannery  (DIERSEN: What would your superiors say that they did to fight income inequality?  My Democrat GAO superiors would stress that they forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,459 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.  My Democrat IRS superiors would stress that they did not promote me beyond GS-12, that they disallowed my education deductions, and that they disallowed my partial day per diem claims.  My Democrat Post Office superiors would stress that they forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests.  My aforesaid Democrat superiors would stress that the aforesaid adverse actions that they took against me directly benefited their employees who were poor, and especially their poor employees who were Democrat, minority, female, younger, and/or veteran.)

ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL
— New employee is greeted by cold shoulder – Dale Dauten and Janine J.T. O’Donnell  (DIERSEN: Of course, because I have always been a Republican, I was greeted with cold shoulders when I started working for GAO in 1980, for IRS in 1971, and for the Post Office in 1966. GAO hired me because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, younger person, or veteran who would take the job.  IRS hired me because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job.  The Post Office hired me because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job.  Additional reasons why I was greeted with cold shoulders was that many of my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates disapproved of one of more of my demographics – draft dodger, conservative, baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran, 100% German national origin, ancestors have been in America since the 1840s, White, male, older, non-poor, gun owner, etc.)

FEDERAL TIMES
— GSA updates per diem rates for 2017 – Aaron Boyd  (DIERSEN: SEE GAO DECISION:
http://www.gao.gov/products/463866  During the 1970s, IRS purposely kept its definition of “commuting area” vague so that it could use it to punish or to reward its employees.  When my IRS Democrat superiors succeeded in getting rid of the IRS manager who had promoted me in 1972, 1973, and 1974, they changed their definition of “commuting area” to punish me.  They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, or a veteran.)

GOPUSA
— Pandering to illegals
http://www.gopusa.com/?p=13622
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a bid to continue the ineffectual immigration legacy of President Obama, if not a pander for Hispanic votes, Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton vows to, if elected, introduce comprehensive immigration “reform” within her first 100 days in office. Already that’s “luring (immigrant) families to the U.S. and wrecking innocent lives,” according to a statement from the National Border Patrol Council. The labor union representing 16,500 workers says what Mrs. Clinton proposes would be worse than Mr. Obama’s “disastrous” amnesty. More executive actions would add chaos at the southern border, providing cover for drug cartels and Islamic extremists to gain entry, according to the Border Patrol council, which backs GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump. “We are already seeing a massive influx of activity on our southern border,” according to the council. As it is, Obama’s pockmarked “pathway to citizenship” led to state lawsuits, a federal judge’s injunction and finally a deadlocked Supreme Court. Now Clinton vows to expand Obama’s executive actions on immigration, USA Today reports. Any comprehensive “reform” begins with Congress — not with empty campaign promises from either candidate. And until the people’s representatives determine what those reforms should be, it is the president’s sworn duty to uphold this nation’s immigration laws.)

DAILY HERALD
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD WITH COLOR PHOTO OF GRIFFIN: Wide range of rules on what teacher classes taxpayers cover – Jake Griffin  (DIERSEN: Officially, the federal government encourages its employees to take job-related courses.  However, while I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, the agencies that I worked for either had no tuition reimbursement program or one that provided only token reimbursement. Nevertheless, while I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, spent lots of my own time and money taking courses to earn a job-related bachelor’s degree, three job-related master’s degrees, and two job-related professional certifications. However, my Democrat superiors, Democrat supervisors, Democrat coworkers, and Democrat subordinates in the federal government always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that the courses that I took a) were not job-related, b) did not help me carry out my job duties, c) were taken by me to get a job in the private sector, and/or d) were a distraction.  They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, or a veteran.  To keep their jobs or to get promoted, my Democrat superiors, Democrat supervisors, Democrat coworkers, and Democrat subordinates in the federal government focused on wasting the careers of and getting rid of federal employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160810/news/160808971/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Daily Herald analysis of 92 suburban school district teacher contracts showed 70 with some type of tuition reimbursement program for educators. As in District 41, a vetting process of the coursework is nearly ubiquitous in all the contracts, but that process varies widely. Most contracts allow teachers to be reimbursed only for classes that count toward an advanced degree or have practical applications to the classes they teach or could teach in the future. District 41’s University of La Verne courses aren’t part of an advanced degree program. Critics of tuition reimbursement programs said school boards and administrators should pay closer attention to these policies, since teachers’ education levels are directly tied to their salary and pension costs. “When you are tying compensation to the number of classes taken and completed, that seems to be the wrong measurement,” said David From, Illinois state director for Americans for Prosperity, a national tax policy reform organization. “It should be tied to how good you are. It’s doing our kids a disservice and it’s certainly doing taxpayers a disservice.” Teachers union officials argue everyone, including taxpayers, benefits from increased education for a school district’s teachers, particularly when those classes are germane to what they teach.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2016/08/10/dont-forget-civil-servants-during-the-presidential-transition/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the heat of a bizarre presidential campaign, the horse race makes it easy to forget that the point of politics is governing. And when we think of the next administration, we often focus on who will get the top political appointments. But to govern effectively, any administration needs to consider civil servants, particularly during the transition, when they will play an enhanced role until new political appointees are in place. Max Stier, president and chief executive of the good-government Partnership for Public Service, calls career federal employees the “vital engine” that keeps government going. “The reality is the career workforce is the continuous thread across administrations,” he said. “They’re the people who know how it works and how things get done.” Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump should not forget them. The Presidential Transitions Improvements Act, signed by President Obama in March, recognizes their importance and calls for each agency to appoint a senior career employee to oversee and implement transition activities.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Chicago Fire soccer team shuts down anti-gay chant – John Kass
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/kass/ct-chicago-fire-anti-gay-soccer-chant-kass-0804-20160803-column.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It was “Pride” night. The Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus had finished a fine rendition of the national anthem before Sunday’s game with the New York Red Bulls. That’s when Rodriguez walked into the center circle and did something the rest of the soccer world doesn’t seem able to do. He looked up into the stands and announced that any fan found to be using the infamous anti-gay Mexican soccer chant would be booted out of the stadium. “An inappropriate and offensive chant has been used by some of our fans,” Rodriguez said. “It is unbecoming and certainly not reflective of the great city that we live in, and the best fans in major league soccer. “Please be advised that if the chant continues and you are found to be participating, you are subject to removal. If you are near fans using offensive language, please advise stadium security so we can handle that as well.” And all I could say was “bravo.” There were a few boos. But most of us applauded him. And I didn’t hear that chant once during the game. If you know soccer, you know the chant I’m talking about, a chant of one word: Puto. It means effeminate man whore. It is ugly and demeaning, directed at gay men in a macho culture, but at soccer games it is directed at the goalie of the opposing team.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Inmate may have to register as sex offender for flashing guard – Frank Main  (DIERSEN: Of course, needless-to-say, if you disapprove of what “Savage Life” members do, Democrats and RINOs will viciously demonize, denigrate, and condemn you as being a racist, a sexist, a bigot, and even worse things.)
http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/savage-life-inmate-to-register-as-sex-offender-for-flashing-guard/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For the first time, a Cook County Jail inmate may be required to register as a sex offender for repeatedly exposing himself to correctional officers, a sheriff’s official said Thursday. Giovanni Rios, who is awaiting trial in a 2015 murder in Humboldt Park, was held in contempt of court Thursday by Judge Vincent Gaughan for allegedly exposing himself to a female guard on Wednesday, said Cara Smith, policy chief for Sheriff Tom Dart. Rios, 20, a member of the Savage Life jail gang, is charged with the Wednesday incident and two similar ones in the jail, Smith said. If convicted of all three charges, he would be required to register as a sex offender, she said. “It is tremendous to see these cases taken seriously,” she said, adding she believes it’s the first time anyone may be ordered to register as a sex offender for committing acts of indecent exposure in the jail. Rios is one of about 35 inmates who have identified themselves as members of Savage Life, a gang formed last year among inmates being held in maximum-security units. Their activities include physically attacking guards, throwing feces and urine at them, and exposing themselves and masturbating in the presence of female defense attorneys and correctional officers, Smith said. Since July 2015, jail officials have recorded hundreds of such incidents involving Savage Life but the incidents have decreased in recent months. One of the ways the sheriff’s office is combatting the behavior is to take away “good time” inmates earn in jail, Smith said. The office also is limiting visits and aggressively prosecuting Savage Life inmates for public indecency and other crimes, she said. Smith said she hopes the possibility of Rios becoming a registered sex offender sends a message to other Savage Life inmates. Even hardened criminals balk at the stigma of being labeled sex offenders, she said. Savage Life members recently expanded their perverse activities. They have been opening their own wounds and sticking sharp objects into their eyes to force guards to send them to the jail hospital. Most Savage Life members are in the maximum-security Division 9 and relish the chance to “take a walk” to another part of the jail — even the hospital, Smith said.)

http://www.wjbc.com/2016/08/05/gop-insider-faces-backlash-for-slamming-trump/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Republican strategist said it’s not easy being a vocal critic of the party’s nominee for president. Former Illinois GOP chairman Pat Brady has been saying for months Donald Trump is unelectable. “One of the members of the national committee at the convention told me I need to quit being a Republican,” Brady said. “I didn’t know you could resign.” Brady is encouraging Republicans to focus on down-ticket races, including the hotly-contested U.S. Senate battle between Republican incumbent Mark Kirk and Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth. Brady told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin, Republicans who have been critical of Trump, including Kirk and U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, could get some blowback but are putting the country ahead of the party. Brady said Kinzinger’s recent announcement that he likely won’t vote for anyone in the presidential race won’t hurt his political future, even if some in the party try to run him out of office. “They can try, they are not going to beat him,” Brady said. “Adam is one of the best people we have in Congress he’s a smart guy. He’s a military guard. He’s a great public servant and I think people like and respect him.” Brady tells WJBC’s Scott Laughlin he wouldn’t be surprised if the Bloomington native runs for higher office in a few years.)

WTTW
— Black Lives Matter Coalition Releases 1st Official Platform – Reuben Unrau
http://chicagotonight.wttw.com/2016/08/02/black-lives-matter-coalition-releases-1st-official-platform
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The demands are organized into six categories with titles such as “Invest-Divest,” “Economic Justice,” “Community Control” and “Political Power.” Within each category, the agenda includes a list of more than 40 specific federal, state and local policies that could be applied to create solutions. The conglomerate calls for a variety of far-reaching reforms that address issues that extend beyond the subject of police brutality. Policy proposals include a call for universal health care, decriminalization of drug-related offenses, federal and state jobs programs, community control of law enforcement and the end of the death penalty. Perhaps the most striking item featured in the agenda is the demand for reparations, which contains a five-part plan to address various economic sectors affected by the legacy of slavery.)

ILLINOIS FAMILY ACTION
— The Cannibalization of the GOP –  Laurie Higgins
https://illinoisfamilyaction.org/2016/08/the-cannibalization-of-the-gop/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: At this cultural moment, the GOP is the only party that defends marriage, the intrinsic rights of children (both prenatal and post-natal children), religious liberty, and the physical privacy rights of girls and boys and men and women. But the barbarians have breached the gate and are cannibalizing the GOP while it yet lives. Well-dressed, well-spoken barbarians but barbarians nonetheless. What accounts for the corruption of the GOP? There are numerous reasons including the childish moral reasoning of lawmakers like U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) who supports homoerotic faux-marriage because his son experiences homoerotic attraction. The fact that Portman’s son experiences homoerotic attraction does not change the nature of marriage or the moral status of homoerotic activity. And it’s foolish to believe that compassion dictates we must affirm everything our loved ones believe, feel, or desire. Would the fact that people we love experience polyamorous or “Genetic Sexual Attraction” change the nature of marriage or the moral status of sex between five people or between siblings? But foolish, self-referential moral reasoning is not the only cause of the transmogrification of the party. Another cause is the increasing number of Republicans—including those who identify as homosexual—who say the “social issues” are trivial and irrelevant with no substantive effect on the health and welfare of America. Ironically, while libertarian-leaning, (im)moderate, and homosexual Republicans proclaim the triviality and irrelevance of “social issues” to the survival and flourishing of America, Democrats pursue them like men and women possessed. Could it be that Democrats are able to see truths to which Republicans are blind?)

DAILY SIGNAL

http://dailysignal.com/2016/08/04/how-depaul-university-surrenders-to-the-mob/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Perhaps DePaul was afraid of offending Black Lives Matter, and looking politically incorrect. The protesters, exercising a heckler’s veto, were able to shut down the event. Afterward, DePaul’s president, the Rev. Dennis Holtschneider, purported to apologize by email to the College Republicans. But Holtschneider made sure to include his opinion of Yiannopoulos and other speakers of his “ilk,” whom he referred to as “self-serving provocateurs” whose “shtick” is “unworthy of university discourse.” Meanwhile, DePaul is more than happy to host controversial liberal speakers and events, such as a fundraiser for Rasmea Odeh, a convicted terrorist. By banning Shapiro from speaking because of the threat of a protest, DePaul’s administration is siding with students who disagree with his viewpoint rather than standing up to potential violence on campus. DePaul also is teaching its students not to engage in the “open discourse” the university purports to foster. It is showing them that they can silence opposing views with threats of protests and violence. “After all,” writes Jim DeMint, president of The Heritage Foundation, “the easiest way to win an argument is to tape your opponent’s mouth shut. Too many educators today think this is a good idea.” As a private institution, DePaul is not held to the same First Amendment standards as public universities. Kelly Sarabyn, a former fellow at the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, argues that, nonetheless, the “longstanding purpose of the liberal arts and research universities is realized through free speech on campus, and students, faculty, and donors reasonably expect it to prevail.” Those groups may yet persuade universities to stand behind their commitments to free speech through advocacy and donations. If such efforts prove unsuccessful, perhaps courts could be persuaded, as Sarabyn argues they should be, to compel private schools to honor any express commitments to prospective students to honor free speech on campus—on the ground that students are enticed by and rely upon those commitments when choosing which schools to attend. Given the university president’s open animosity to speakers such as Yiannopoulos, the Shapiro incident raises the real possibility that DePaul administrators are all too happy to have an excuse to prevent students from being exposed to views that compete with their school’s own liberal ideology. Is it that DePaul administrators can’t keep their students safe and their speaking events secure? Or is it that they refuse to do so because citing “security concerns” to prevent conservative speakers from appearing on campus actually furthers their own ideological aims?)

— Stop calling Trump crazy – David M. Perry  (DIERSEN: Democrats are moral relativists who believe that their end justifies their means.  They are disciples of Saul Alinsky.  If you do not become a Democrat, sooner or later, they will hint/imply/argue/shout that you are mentally ill.)
http://www.cnn.com/2016/08/04/opinions/stop-calling-trump-crazy-perry/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: This week, Karen Bass, a Democratic congresswoman from California, launched a Change.org petition calling for Donald Trump to be diagnosed. She supported it by promoting the hashtag #DiagnoseTrump, and the topic took off. Her effort has received ample media coverage and trended nationally on Twitter for a while. And as it did, it became the latest manifestation of a problem I’ve been tracking for months now. With what seems to be increasing frequency, each time Trump does something objectionable, too many of his opponents want to blame mental illness as a way to erode his electoral chances. Yet characterizing Trump as “crazy” relies on the stigma of psychiatric disabilities to make a point. There are many grounds on which to criticize Donald Trump and to argue against his candidacy. But his mental health should not be one of them, because it’s a strategy that appeals to bigotry. Leveraging ableism to achieve electoral goals is no more acceptable than using racism, sexism, anti-gay sentiment, anti-Islamic sentiment, or any other form of prejudice. I don’t want Donald Trump to become president for lots of reasons. He routinely makes racist and sexist comments. He lies. I don’t trust him to make good decisions or to hire good people. The list of detriments goes on and on. Yet characterizing his erratic temperament or understanding of the truth as a product of mental illness, then arguing he’s unfit to lead because of that mental illness, sends a terrible message to the millions of people with diagnosed psychiatric disabilities who are trying to make their way through an ableist world. Don’t just take it from me. Many people with psychiatric disabilities and other diagnoses have been writing about this since Trump’s candidacy became serious, begging abled America to stop stigmatizing mental illness through armchair diagnoses of Donald Trump. Disability rights advocate Kit Mead, for example, recently wrote, “Discussing Trump’s mental health status is getting into the territory where people will use it to say that people with mental health needs can’t be effective candidates for public office if they choose to run.” Kim Sauder makes a similar argument, writing, “If the logic is that by framing Trump as having a mental illness makes him unfit for the presidency then the message is that mental illness is equated with incompetence.” Furthermore, Sauder writes, “Bigotry is not a mental illness.” Finn Gardiner notes that there are many ways to criticize someone with whom you disagree that do not rely on ableist concepts. “Call them wrong. Call them misguided. Call them terrible,” Gardiner writes, “But stop calling them crazy.” Emily Willingham made a similar point at Forbes, writing, “We can use specific terms about his personality (disagreeable) and temperament (toddler-ish) but not make attributions to a clinical disorder.” Avoiding pathologizing Donald Trump doesn’t mean surrendering a useful weapon in the quest to defeat him. Unfortunately, there’s a specific history of using disability as a weapon to attack political opponents at the highest levels in our society. In 1964, the cover of Fact Magazine read, “1,189 Psychiatrists Say Goldwater is Psychologically Unfit to be President!” The story called him paranoid, criticized him for his “infantile fantasies of revenge,” his relationship with his mother, a “dangerous lunatic,” and discussed alleged nervous breakdowns. Goldwater sued Fact and won. The American Psychiatrist Association, or APA, recognizing how dangerous it was to use mental health as a political weapon, issued the “Goldwater Rule,” forbidding psychiatrists from commenting on anyone’s mental state without personally examining them and receiving permission to go public. The APA was worried that people would conceal their mental health needs lest they be publicly shamed. And that’s just what happened in 1972, when Thomas Eagleton was dropped from the vice presidential slot on the Democratic ticket due to revelations that he had sought treatment for depression. A few years later, noted columnist Garry Wills argued that George Wallace was unfit to serve as president because a physical disability (he had been shot) might cover up a mental disability. And no one really knows if Reagan did in fact begin to show signs of Alzheimer’s while in office, as his son has alleged, but I can’t blame his team for concealing it if he did. Ironically, all this stigma about mental health and public office ignores history. One study found that half of all U.S. presidents showed symptoms of mental illness, often while in office, including widely acknowledged leaders like Abraham Lincoln and Lyndon Johnson. Such neuro-diversity is a core feature of humanity, so it’s not surprising that our leaders reflect the broader realities of our mental variations.)

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/05/us/college-protests-alumni-donations.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Scott MacConnell cherishes the memory of his years at Amherst College, where he discovered his future métier as a theatrical designer. But protests on campus over cultural and racial sensitivities last year soured his feelings. Now Mr. MacConnell, who graduated in 1960, is expressing his discontent through his wallet. In June, he cut the college out of his will. “As an alumnus of the college, I feel that I have been lied to, patronized and basically dismissed as an old, white bigot who is insensitive to the needs and feelings of the current college community,” Mr. MacConnell, 77, wrote in a letter to the college’s alumni fund in December, when he first warned that he was reducing his support to the college to a token $5. A backlash from alumni is an unexpected aftershock of the campus disruptions of the last academic year. Although fund-raisers are still gauging the extent of the effect on philanthropy, some colleges — particularly small, elite liberal arts institutions — have reported a decline in donations, accompanied by a laundry list of complaints. Alumni from a range of generations say they are baffled by today’s college culture. Among their laments: Students are too wrapped up in racial and identity politics. They are allowed to take too many frivolous courses. They have repudiated the heroes and traditions of the past by judging them by today’s standards rather than in the context of their times. Fraternities are being unfairly maligned, and men are being demonized by sexual assault investigations. And university administrations have been too meek in addressing protesters whose messages have seemed to fly in the face of free speech.)

http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/pope-not-right-to-talk-about-violent-terrorist-islam/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Pope Francis said Sunday he won’t label Islam as “terrorist” because that would be unfair and not true. Reporters aboard the papal plane flying him home after a pilgrimage to Poland, the day after extremists slit the throat of an elderly priest celebrating Mass in a French church, asked him why he never uses the word “Islam” to describe terrorism or other violence. While in Poland, Francis made an unscheduled stop at a church in Krakow to implore God to protect people from the “devastating wave” of terrorism in many parts of the world. When asked why he didn’t describe the priest’s murder and other attacks as Islamic terrorism, Francis replied he won’t do that because “it’s not right to identify Islam with violence. It’s not right and it’s not true.”  “I believe that in every religion there is always a little fundamentalist group,” he said. “I don’t like to talk of Islamic violence because, every day, when I go through the newspapers, I see violence, this man who girls his girlfriend, another who kills his mother-in-law,” Francis said, in apparent reference to crime news in predominantly Catholic Italy. “And these are baptized Catholics. If I speak of Islamic violence, then I have to speak of Catholic violence.” “In Islam, not all are violent, not all the Catholics are violent,” he said. “It’s like a fruit salad, everything’s in there. Noting he has spoken with imams, he concluded: “I know how they think, they are looking for peace.”  As for ISIS, he said, the Islamic State group “presents itself with a violent identity card, but that’s not Islam.” Francis spoke on the day when Muslims in France and Italy flocked to Sunday Mass in a show of interfaith solidarity following a string of extremist attacks threatening to sharpen religious divides across Europe.)

http://foxillinois.com/news/local/christian-county-sheriff-reacts-to-new-marijuana-law-08-01-2016
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Christian County sheriff Bruce Kettelkamp is condemning Illinois’ new marijuana decriminalization law. Governor Bruce Rauner signed the bill Friday removing criminal penalties for possession of small amounts of marijuana. Now possession of 10 grams of marijuana or less is considered a civil violation, similar to a traffic ticket. Kettelkamp says the change won’t save his department time, because drugs can lead to more serious crimes. “I think this is a big mistake for our legislators. I just wish the legislators would just spend one day, or a couple days, in law enforcement’s shoes and see from the people that use marijuana,” said Kettelkamp. Kettelkamp tells us he’s worried the new law sends the wrong message to kids who might now think it’s acceptable to use marijuana.)

http://www.nytimes.com/1996/03/13/us/seeking-return-to-ways-of-patronage-in-politics.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It is no secret that the fabled Democratic machine in Chicago stole a vote or two for John F. Kennedy in the 1960 Presidential election. It is less well-known that Republicans in downstate Illinois were padding the vote for Richard M. Nixon. In fact, while political machines have traditionally been regarded as the offspring of the Democratic Party in big cities, the Illinois Republican Party has hardly been a slouch in flexing its political muscle, known in the state simply as clout. The party has long dominated the suburbs and smaller cities, and throughout the 1980’s, when James R. Thompson was Governor, a job applicant typically needed a letter of endorsement from a party leader. So perhaps it is fitting that Republican politicians here are rising to the defense of political patronage. In 1990 the United States Supreme Court, ruling in a case brought by five frustrated job seekers against the Republican Party of Illinois, outlawed political favoritism in all government hiring except for policy-making posts, saying that only merit should count. This was a strange concept in Illinois, where the spoils system had always been rather the point of politics. This spring the issue is heading for the Court again in a different case, and Gov. Jim Edgar, a Republican, filed a brief last month asking the Justices to reverse its ban on government favoritism. He argues that patronage actually helps the democratic system. As another top Republican here, State Representative Lee Daniels, put it, patronage “doesn’t need to be a dirty word.” In response, civil libertarians say it is an embarrassment for the state to have political leaders arguing against meritocracy. “It seems only in Illinois,” said Harvey Grossman, the head of the American Civil Liberties Union office in Chicago, “would state officials be willing to publicly endorse the corrosive practice” of patronage. But Jeffrey Coleman, a lawyer for Governor Edgar, said it was simply logical for a political leader to prefer workers who are friends, rather than foes. “George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson and every administration at the Federal and state level for 200 years used political consideration in hiring,” Mr. Coleman said. “And it seems rather ironic that nine men and women who were appointed to the Supreme Court for political reasons would say that politics should play no role in the selection of public employees.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: As members of the baby-boom generation continue to selfishly retire, waltzing off to engage in ridiculous activities like “enjoying life” and “relaxing,” the rest of us are left with the drudgery of work and, in many cases, a notable lack of institutional knowledge. According to the Pew Research Center, 10,000 baby boomers are reaching age 65 each day. While it’s been on the horizon for years, the reality of the boomer brain drain is still catching companies off guard, making “knowledge transfer” the buzzword du jour. Before veteran workers depart, it’s crucial they pass along not just a rough outline of how they do their jobs or a filing cabinet stuffed with old manuals and reports but some of the deeper knowledge gained from years of experience. It’s something Dorothy Leonard, a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School and co-founder of the consulting firm Leonard-Barton Group, calls “tacit knowledge.”)

http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2016-07-31/tom-kacich-hillary-made-news-even-when-she-was-22.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: By the time she was 22 years old Hillary Rodham had been elected student body president at Wellesley College, had given the first-ever student commencement speech at the Massachusetts college that is still exclusively for women, had been featured in an issue of Life magazine, had been accused on the front page of the Boston Globe of upstaging a U.S. senator and had been denounced in an editorial by her hometown newspaper, the Chicago Tribune. Even 900 miles away at the University of Illinois, Rodham was mentioned by Illinois Gov. Richard Ogilvie in a commencement address as representative of the student idealism of that time. All of that attention 47 or more years ago undoubtedly prepared Rodham — the future Hillary Clinton — for a lifetime in the public eye, including a historic run for president. The one-time “Goldwater Girl” from Park Ridge shed her conservative values while at Wellesley and within four years had moved 180 degrees politically, backing anti-war Democrat Sen. Eugene McCarthy for president in 1968. She became a student leader, ran for president of the student government and on May 31, 1969, gave the commencement speech that attracted so much attention. Ruth Adams, the president of Wellesley, introduced Rodham as “cheerful, good humored, good company and a good friend to all of us.” In her prepared remarks Rodham talked mostly of her classes’ time at Wellesley, of protests and demonstrations, and shared power and responsibility, and of the value of education.)

HERALD & REVIEW
— Legislators: Big pay for a part-time job – Editorial  (DIERSEN: Who hints/implies/argues/shouts that you are/were overpaid?  The following hint/imply/argue/shout that the federal government overpaid me: those who are anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors. Many millions have not and will not seek a job with the federal government a) because the pay and benefits are terrible, b) because the advancement opportunities are terrible, c) because they lack required education, work experience, professional certifications, and/or professional licenses, d) because they cannot pass a background investigation, e) because they cannot pass a physical examination, f) because they cannot take the demonization, denigration, and condemnation that comes with being a federal employee or federal retiree, and/or g) because they are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and they know that the federal government discriminates against its employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Most folks would say that a salary of $100,000 for a full-time job is a pretty good gig. A six-figure salary for a part-time job is the stuff of fantasy. Except for the Illinois General Assembly, where the majority of members pull down more than $100,000 a year for what is a part-time job. For taxpayers, the news gets worse. When other costs such as pension, mileage, per diem payments and insurance are figured in, taxpayers pay about $32 million a year to the 177 legislators, according to a new report by the Illinois Policy Institute. Illinois legislators are the highest paid in the Midwest and fifth-highest in the nation. It should be noted that this group of 177 legislators have combined to turn Illinois into the worst-run state in the nation. Pay for performance isn’t part of the formula.)
