— VERY SAD: Protesters Gather in Chicago, Calling on Trump to Release Tax Returns  (DIERSEN: In 1977, in connection with Money Magazine doing a “One Person’s Finances” article on me, I gave Money Magazine copies of my 1972-1976 federal income tax returns. When Money Magazine published its 4-page article on me in its February, 1978 issue, it because clear that the Democrats at Money Magazine selected me for the article because they wanted to and because they did a) foist negative government employee stereotypes on me and b) paint my education deductions as being improper.  They described my job duties as an IRS Revenue Officer and the graduate business courses at Loyola and the graduate accounting courses at DePaul that I had deducted purposely to make it look like the courses did not relate to my job duties and they did not help me carry out my job duties. They implied that the courses qualified me for “a new trade or business” and that I took the courses to get a job in the private sector.  The Democrats at IRS disallowed all the courses notwithstanding the fact that IRS encourages its Revenue Offices to take graduate business and accounting courses and my Loyola and DePaul graduate school applications clearly showed that I wanted to take the courses to help me carry out my job duties at IRS.  I took IRS to Tax Court pro se and won a split decision.  The Democrats at Money Magazine and the Democrats at IRS would not have done the aforesaid to me if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, and/or a veteran.)

Factors for 915 Cove Court in Wheaton include the subdivision being built in a watershed area and a former septic field, the tremendous amount of surface and subsurface storm water that flows onto the lot during and after heavy rains, the inadequate number of storm sewer inlets in the subdivision, the disruption, obstruction, and improper connection of 6″ and 4″ subterranean drainage lines when the home was built, the pouring the foundation walls on cracked footings, the improper installation and intentional blockage of exterior foundation footing tiles, the installation of only one sump pump when there should have been two or even three or even four, the many long and wide cracks in the basement floor, and the fact that all the storm water that gets into the storm sewer system on the lot is limited to the capacity of just one 4″ pipe.  What factors decrease the likelihood of your basement flooding?  For 915 Cove Court, they include the installation of steel reinforcement rods in foundation walls, the installation of interior footing tiles, my paying $900 when the home was built in 1984 to have all nine of the home’s downspouts directly connected to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my installing a backup sump pump, my unobstructed and properly connecting the aforesaid subterranean drainage lines to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my paying for unobstruction (the removal of stones) from some of the exterior footing tiles, my adding hundreds of feet of French drains and many storm sewer inlets on the lot and connecting them directly to Wheaton’s storm sewer system, my properly sealing the many long and wide cracks in the basement floor, my paying for conversion to an overhead sewer system before the basement was finished in 2005, and my paying for a 20-W whole house natural gas backup electric generator for the home.  Since 1984, because of Wheaton’s failure/refusal to assure that building codes were enforced when the subdivision was constructed and 915 Cove Court was built, I have been forced to spend many thousands of dollars and many hundreds of hours of my labor to stop basement flooding.)

I’m also something of a political operative, though Mr. Miner over at the Reader imagines I’d prefer a loftier description.” There’s a far more serious motive behind the name calling, Proft’s Illinois Rising co-host, Pat Hughes, said during the same broadcast. “Look at the irony,” Hughes said. “Eric Zorn is commenting on your newspaper from a newspaper. In July 2009, a few weeks after Proft announced his ultimately failed bid for the Republican nomination in the governor’s race, Zorn used his column to call Proft a “seethingly eloquent conservative attack dog.” The Tribune has allowed Proft space in its columns to voice his views as well. On July 11, 2016, it published Proft’s op-ed piece, “How to (really) achieve the ‘important conversation,’ ” about the sniper attack in Dallas a few days earlier that killed five police officers. Proft criticized the mainstream news media’s coverage of the incident, as well as other incidents in which police officers have been shot by black men, and urged less-biased, more-objective coverage. “There is plenty of intellectual room between ‘cops can do no wrong’ and ‘cops are all racists waging war against minorities,’ ” Proft wrote. “The reasoned room in between is occupied by most of the Americans who are not on television, radio or Twitter.” Proft cited the apparent hypocrisy of critics dismissing his news outlets as not being objective while their own work is published by companies with far less transparent political biases. “I’m transparent about my point of view,” Proft said. “That certainly informs the stories that we select to cover and the way that we cover them. And that’s the case for everybody in journalism. I hate to break it to those who think there’s this superhuman race of journalists who have no point of view. Every human being has a point of view, and it influences how they do their jobs. So, if we could just start from that agreed upon point, then maybe we could get somewhere. But they have an agenda.”)

DCCC isn’t tipping its hand, other than saying that the 6th is on its short list of national targets for next year. Says a spokeswoman, “There’s no question that Rep. Peter Roskam is out of step with Illinois voters. We fully expect to have a strong recruit in the sixth district and it’s why we’ve made an unprecedented investment in the region by investing in a full-time, local organizer to harness the grassroots energy we’re seeing on the ground.” To emphasize the point, the DuPage County Democratic Organization says it’s expecting quite a turnout for its annual dinner on April, with at least three Democratic candidates for governor expected to attend: Chris Kennedy, Ameya Pawar and J.B. Pritzker. Robert Peickert, chair of the DuPage County Democratic Organization, says he hopes to build on momentum from the fall, when the party increased from 1 to 18 the number of township slots it holds in the county. However, the other 54 township positions are held by Republicans, and Roskam says he’s not sweating. “DCCC is not unknown to me. I saw them in ’06 and ’08,” he told me in a phone call. While Hillary Clinton may have out-polled Trump in the district in November, “I did better than John McCain (when he was the GOP presidential nominee) and outdid Obama in Obama’s big year (2008,) says Roskam. “I know the district and the playbook.” It looks like 2018 could be interesting.)

He was licensed in Kentucky with a specialty in pulmonary disease. His legal troubles started in 2003, when his medical license was suspended after an undercover sting operation at a Louisville motel for allegedly writing fraudulent prescriptions. According to the documents, the licensing board had learned that Dao had become sexually interested in a patient and hired the patient as his office manager. That man later said he quit his job because Dao “pursued him aggressively” and arranged to provide him with prescription drugs in exchange for sex. Dao was ultimately convicted in late 2004 of several counts of obtaining drugs by fraud or deceit and was placed on five years of supervised probation and surrendered his medical license. His longtime effort to get his license back finally succeeded in 2015, when the licensing board allowed him to practice medicine again.)

The site is professional-looking, with items presented as news stories and a solicitation for tips. AARON DeGROOT, a spokesman for the state GOP, said the site has no connection to the party and he has “no idea who these folks are.” Its creators aren’t making it easy to find out, either. A computer expert at my newspaper tells me there’s no easy way to track the origin of the site because its domain was registered anonymously. An address listed at the bottom of the group’s email is in Champaign, but turned out to be a UPS store. An employee there said they do rent mailboxes. The group name doesn’t turn up in the Illinois State Board of Elections, but it appears to have started a Facebook page recently. I emailed to find out more. People who search for a topic in Google’s main search engine or the Google News section will see a conclusion such as “mostly true” or “false” next to stories that have been fact checked. Google has been working with more than 100 news organizations and fact-checking groups , including The Associated Press, the BBC and NPR. Their conclusions will appear in search results as long as they meet certain formatting criteria for automation. Google said only a few of those organizations, including PolitiFact and Snopes.com, have already met those requirements; The Washington Post also says it complies. Google said it expects the ranks of compliant organizations to grow following Friday’s announcement. Not all news stories will be fact checked. Glenn Kessler, who writes “The Fact Checker” column at The Washington Post, said in an email that Google’s efforts should at least “make it easier for people around the world to obtain information that counters the spin by politicians and political advocacy groups, as well as purveyors of ‘fake news.'” He added that “over time, I expect that people increasingly will want to read a fact-check on a controversial issue or statement, even if the report conflicts with their political leanings.” Google started offering fact check tags in the U.S. and the U.K. in October and expanded the program to a handful of other countries in the subsequent months. Now the program is open to the rest of the world and to all languages. False news and misinformation, often masquerading as trustworthy news that spreads on social media, has gained attention since the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
