I had not started the car for almost 9 years. Most of D&M’s bill was for repairing damage that ethanol did to car’s entire fuel system. The master cylinder and four calipers were replaced, A/C was charged, carburetor was rebuilt and fuel pump replaced, minor electrical and mechanical problems were fixed, five new tires were installed, new battery was installed, etc. I could have avoided much if not all of the fuel system and brake problems if I had driven the car more – at least once each summer. But my excuse for not starting the car since 2009 is that since 2004, I have spent 10+ hours each and every day putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out.)

For the second consecutive election, voters in the Land of Lincoln this November will choose a mega-wealthy governor who has never held any lower political office, and who only got to this one with a massive boost from his personal checkbook. We know this will be true regardless of the election result, because it’s a description that fits both of the major-party candidates. Sure, incumbent Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner can claim four years of on-the-job training, but given his performance during that time, it’s not much of a claim. He had never held any political office before buying into his first gubernatorial term in 2014 with $27.6 million from his own pocket. A venture capitalist, what he brought with him from that world were boardroom skills that you can’t say have been unproductive in office — because they’ve been counterproductive in office. As for Hyatt Hotels heir and Democratic nominee J.B. Pritzker, it seems his primary qualification for governor, and the main reason his party handed him the nomination over more experienced Democrats, is the 10-figure fortune he was born into and his willingness to use it. Rauner is worth nine figures, and Democrats decided to fight fire with more fire. Business people with no political experience who run for high office invariably argue that their business skills are not just an adequate substitute for political skills, but are better. This has never made sense. The goals, rules and responsibilities of business are completely different from those of politics. Rauner’s first term has been a textbook illustration of those differences.)

While this is a very small number, GAO notes that even a few cases of employee misconduct can have significant impacts on workplace morale and impede an agency’s efforts to achieve its mission. Based on data from the Office of Personnel Management, federal agencies made 10,249 suspensions, 7,411 removals, and 114 demotions for misconduct in 2016. However, GAO said that because of weaknesses in OPM’s data on employee misconduct, which is provided by the agencies, OPM is unable to accurately target supervisory training to address misconduct, and decision-makers do not know the full extent or nature of this misconduct. (FROM THE ARTICLE: The federal government officially outlawed age discrimination in the workplace 50 years ago and therefore it is now nothing but a distant memory. We now pause for the laughter to die down. Unfortunately, it is still with us—as are a number of other forms of bias also outlawed around the same time, not incidentally—according to the very agency that enforces the law in the federal workplace as in other workplaces, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act was passed in 1967 but its effective date was put off until June of the following year. The law barred discrimination on grounds of age with respect to any term, condition, or privilege of employment; barred retaliation for opposing employment practices that discriminate based on age or for filing an age discrimination charge; and generally barred including age preferences in job notices. Protection against bias on the basis of advanced age was an admirable foresight in a nation awash with young baby boomers. However, “After 50 years of a federal law whose purpose is to promote the employment of older workers based on ability, age discrimination remains too common and too accepted,” says an EEOC report. “Despite decades of research finding that age does not predict ability or performance, employers often fall back on precisely the ageist stereotypes the ADEA was enacted to prohibit.” While quantifying age discrimination is difficult—in part because, like other forms of discrimination it often is not formally reported—“the perception that age discrimination exists in our workplaces is prevalent,” it said. It cited a recent survey finding that more than 6 in 10 workers age 45 and older say they have seen or experienced age discrimination in the workplace and of those, 90 percent say it is somewhat or very common. This most frequently takes the form of unlawful firing, harassment, discriminatory terms of employment and discriminatory discipline, said the assessment of the nationwide workforce whose findings should be of special concern in the generally older federal workforce. Perhaps we need to hit the reset button and take a hard look at what is right. Let’s begin with a basic premise: To obtain a job, you must possess a skill set, or at least the aptitude to develop the skills needed. Employment then becomes a form of contract. The employer agrees to pay the employee money and benefits in exchange for job performance consistent with defined requirements and standards. This should be obvious. However, in today’s environment we need to add a second premise: In a rapidly changing world, jobs and organizations must continually evolve, grow, and adapt to be effective. This applies to government, not just the private sector. It should be easy, right? Unfortunately, it’s not. Achieving the following three things would go a long way toward improving the performance and accountability of federal employees.)

AARP surveyed 3,900 people age 45 and older who were working full-time or part-time or looking for work and learned that more than nine in 10 older workers see age discrimination as common. And 61% say they’ve personally seen or experienced it. Women are more likely than men to have seen or experienced age discrimination, according to the survey. More than three quarters of African-American respondents, 60% of Latinos and 59% of whites reported seeing or experiencing it. What AARP Says About Age Discrimination “Older workers want to work, they’re ready to work and they need to work,” said Susan Weinstock, AARP’s vice president of financial resilience. “They should have the opportunity to be judged on their merits, rather than their age.” But the survey results strongly suggest older job applicants routinely are denied that opportunity. Since turning 40, a striking 30% of respondents experienced at least one of these six actions and 17% experienced two or more: not getting hired for a job they applied for because of their age; heard negative remarks related to their older age from a colleague; passed up for a chance to get ahead because of their age; heard negative remarks related to their older age from a supervisor; were laid off, fired or forced out of job because of their age or were denied access to training or professional development opportunities because of their age. Among respondents who’ve applied for a new position in the past two years, 44% said they were asked for age-related information such as birth dates and graduation years. Such information is often used to discriminate against older applicants and requests for it discourage many older workers from applying, according to AARP. Fears of Getting Hired After a Job Loss About one third of the survey respondents said they doubted they’d be able to quickly land another job if theirs was eliminated. Almost half of them said the major reason would be age discrimination. Government data shows that nearly one third of workers 55 and older who lose their jobs are unemployed a financially-dangerous six months or more. By contrast, just 18% of those ages 16 to 54 are out of work similar periods. The AARP survey also suggests that most older workers don’t think they have much protection against age discrimination. While a majority reported seeing or experiencing age bias, barely 3% said they’d filed a formal complaint with an employer or government agency.)
