(FROM THE ARTICLE: Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen stripped his fellow officials of any chance of embarrassing him with a second vote to deny reimbursement of personal business expenses by ripping up what appeared to be a check for $149.07 in front of the board Tuesday. Lauzen then accused the board members who rejected his payment of collecting a $25,000 annual paycheck without performing any meaningful public service to justify it. The drama marked the latest sign of an increasingly fractured relationship Lauzen has with many board members. Less than a week ago, he spoke with confidence about a second vote approving his reimbursement request. That vote became necessary after an opinion from State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said Lauzen cast an improper vote to break a 10-10 tie on the reimbursement last month. Lauzen began his speech Tuesday with a highlight reel of accomplishments during his tenure. Those include extending a property tax levy freeze in place since the year before he took office through the 2016 budget year. Also mentioned were a 65 percent reduction in county debt and the coming completion of projects, such as the Longmeadow Parkway and the cross-country course at the former Settlers Hill Landfill. Given those results, Lauzen said, he expected to be “given even more latitude to produce even more good.” Instead, the reimbursement denial comes as more “destructive nitpicking” to stand in the way of progress, Lauzen said. Turning over his plans to create new, nontax income for the county with a waste-to-fuel facility, expansion of the county’s fiber optic network leasing, and promoting the use of county infrastructure for cellphone amplification has gone nowhere, he said. “I would ask you to examine your public service you produced for your $25,000 salary,” Lauzen said. “What positive contribution are you making? What progress has been made? I’ll void the check and not accept it, and then we’re going to be finished with the stuff.” Lauzen then shredded what appeared to be the reimbursement check.)

If confirmed, Kavanaugh, 53, will become one of the most powerful and influential people in government for what could be decades, and he’ll lock in a healthy six-figure salary, too. Kavanaugh currently serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, where judges make $220,600 a year, according to the U.S. Courts website. Associate justices on the Supreme Court make $255,300, while the Chief Justice, currently John Roberts, makes $267,000. These salaries usually increase by $2,000-$3,000 each year. A seat on the court comes with some desirable benefits. Federal judges have the option to enroll in insurance plans through the Federal Employee Health Benefits system, whose website claims it offers “the widest selection of health plans in the country.” And justices can look forward to a generous retirement package. If they retire at 70 after serving 10 years, or at 65 after serving 15 years, they qualify for an annual pension equal to their highest full salary. There is also a summer break when court isn’t in session between July and October. It’s not exactly a vacation, as justices use the summer to prepare for cases scheduled for the fall, but it is when they do most of their traveling, much of which is subsidized, and when they lecture and teach for extra pay. Former justice Antonin Scalia reported going on 28 separate trips to lecture and teach in 2013, and Clarence Thomas earned more than $27,000 in 2015 for lectures at Brigham Young University, Creighton University and George Washington University. Justices have other streams of income, too. Stephen Breyer, for example, reported $45,000 in royalties in 2016 from his book, “The Court and the World,” while Sonia Sotomayor has earned millions for her 2013 memoir, “My Beloved World.” And, of course, some justices invest. When the Supreme Court took a patent case involving Cisco in 2015, Breyer had to sit out because he owns up to $100,000 in Cisco stock. At least six, and perhaps all, of the sitting Supreme Court justices are millionaires, the Center for Public Integrity found after analyzing 2016 financial disclosures. One only has to look at crime statistics committed by illegals to see a glimpse of what a borderless United States holds for us. The Daily Wire reported that 92 percent of confirmed aliens in Federal Bureau of Prisons custody are illegals and that 97 percent of confirmed aliens in the U.S. Marshal Service custody are illegals. Furthermore, 21 percent of those convicted of non-immigration crimes were non-citizens and 2.5 times their share of the population. The Government Accountability Office reported in 2011 that there were 251,000 criminal aliens in federal, state, and local prisons. Those aliens represented nearly three million criminal offenses, which ranged from homicide and kidnappings to drugs, burglary, and larceny. These criminal offenses would not have occurred here had these criminals been prevented from gaining a foothold into our home and thousands of lives would not have been lost.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A letter which demands that Maine Township Republican Committeeman Char Foss-Eggemann of Park Ridge call for the resignation of Township Trustee Dave Carrabotta because of allegations that he inappropriately touched fellow Trustee Kim Jones, has not yet been sent to Eggemann. However, according to some people knowledgeable about the letter, it will soon be mailed to the committeeman as well as Cook County Republican Party leader Sean Morrison, state GOP leader Tim Schneider, and others. Meanwhile, an investigation into the sexual harassment claims by Jones, launched by the town board after May 22 when the charges first surfaced, will take another week and a half to complete, said township Supervisor Laura Morask. She indicated that one more person has to be interviewed by the lawyer assigned to perform the probe. Morask would not comment further. The letter insisting that Eggemann act on the matter was prompted in part by some Republicans demanding that House Speaker Mike Madigan step down because of harassment and bullying complaints leveled against several Democrats. Marilyn Smolenski, Republican candidate who’s running against incumbent Democrat Marty Moylan in the November General Election, has been one of those voices demanding Madigan’s resignation. She has been highly critical of Moylan for not standing up to Madigan by demanding that he resign. Eggemann is a strong supporter of Smolenski, who lives in Park Ridge. Moylan recently blasted Smolenski for backing “one of the biggest perverts in the U.S., Trump.” Added Moylan, “He’s one of the biggest pigs in the U.S. I’m not silent. Tell that Trump backing pistol packing Trump supporter that I back women’s rights and I voted for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).” Smolenski owns a company that sells pistol holders for women. On the advice of the township attorney, Jones confronted Carrabotta with her accusations of inappropriately touching her backside on May 22. Carrabotta flatly denied the allegations and demanded an immediate closed door meeting where the issue could be discussed. Jones accuses Carrabotta of touching her on three separate occasions during township events in late 2017 and 2018. According to people familiar with the letter, it’s believed that at least 10 local Republican women will sign it by the time it is mailed to Eggemann. Among the words used in the letter are “outrageous” and “disturbing.” It also says that Jones has a solid reputation in the community and was slated by committeeman Eggemann to run for the township position. Carrabotta has told the Journal & Topics that the matter is “confidential”. In a statement released yesterday (Tuesday) by State Republican chairman Tim Schneider, he said, “The Illinois Republican Party strongly believes that sexual harassment has no place in any workplace, public or private, and that allegations must be investigated swiftly by independent parties. If the allegations against the Maine Township trustee are true, he has violated the public’s trust and should step down. Until then, the investigation involving the allegations should proceed.”)

So misguided is this effort that Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma and one of the most conservative members of Congress, came to the agency’s defense. In a report issued by his office on Nov. 16, Senator Coburn pointed out that the G.A.O.’s budget has been cut by 13 percent in real terms since 1992 and its work force reduced by 40 percent — more than 2,000 people. By contrast, Congress’s budget has risen at twice the rate of inflation and nearly doubled to $2.3 billion from $1.2 billion over the last decade. Two recent events demonstrate the problem Rauner has. Conservative state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton almost ended Rauner’s dream of a second four-year term in the primary. Rauner received just 51 percent of the primary vote to 49 percent for Ives. Despite that, some Republican leaders hoped that Ives might be persuaded to support Rauner in the general election. After all, if Pritzker wins, Democrats will regain total control of state government and her political party will be relegated to the irrelevant status it endured from 2003 to 2015, when the GOP captured the governor’s office. But time has not healed the sting of defeat for Ives. Asked last week about her intentions, an embittered Ives indicated there is no way she’ll endorse Rauner. “No. I’m not going to endorse the governor. I’m going to let him buy back his voters,” she said. Ives’ differences with Rauner are strictly ideological. A social conservative, she deeply resented Rauner’s decision to sign legislation authorizing taxpayer-funded abortions. Ives is not alone, as demonstrated by the strong support she received in the primary. To make matters worse for Rauner, there’s state Sen. Sam McCann of Plainview. He donated $50,000 to the state Republican Party last month. GOP incumbents recognize the governor is in a high-stakes battle for his own office. “For every dollar Bruce puts in his campaign, J.B. Pritzker is putting in $2,” noted one GOP lawmaker, referring to Rauner’s billionaire Democratic opponent. The governor might not want to encourage the tit for tat. Another lawmaker says Republicans are bracing for a possible Blue Wave and know the only thing that can save them is cash. The Numbers: According to the Illinois Sunshine election database, the Illinois Republican Party has $509,000 available. There are 118 House seats up for grabs and 39 Senate seats.
