— The future of jobs: More men doing ‘women’s work’ – Jon Swartz  (DIERSEN: What jobs have you held?  Because all the jobs that I held 1964-1997 were bad ‘men’s work’ jobs, with the exception of the first job that I held, my superiors always had an extremely hard time getting women to take those jobs.  My first job, a ‘women’s work’ and a ‘minorities work’ job washing dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights 1964-1966 was so bad that women and minorities would not take/keep the job.  My understanding is that I was the first and only White male to hold that job and that I held it longer (18 months) than anyone else. The bad ‘men’s work’ jobs that held after were cleaning golf shoes, chipping slag, pumping gasoline, delivering mail, working on an automobile assembly line, working as a security guard, selling tires, automotive services, and major appliances, collecting delinquent taxes, and auditing federal agencies.)

Non-veteran White males who are seeking a job with the federal government should be advised that with only rare exceptions, a) your career will be wasted and you will be gotten rid of if you do not make GS-13 ($94,610) by age 25, GS-14 ($111,801) by age 30, GS-15 ($131,508) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service ($161,900) by age 40 and b) you will be expected to help your superiors and supervisors get rid of their employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran. When I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates shouted that I could never have a successful GAO career, that is, that GAO could and should waste my career and get rid of me.  They stressed a) that I was a Republican, b) that I was 31 years old, c) that I was White, d) that I was a male, e) that I was not a veteran, and f) that GAO forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars, that is, a downgrade from GS-12 Step 5, currently $90,173, to GS-9, Step 10, currently $71,326, to transfer from IRS to GAO.)
