HUFFINGTON POST
— The Government Shutdown Is The Latest Chapter In Trump’s Fight With Federal Workers. He’s been sticking it to them pretty much since he took office. – Dave Jamieson (DIERSEN: What about you would your critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes stress to Trump? Mine would stress to Trump that I was a federal employee for almost 30 years and that I have been a federal retiree for more than 21 years. They would hint/imply/argue/shout that I was grossly overpaid and that my retirement benefits are much too generous. In my defense, I would stress that I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32. I would explain why I became a federal employee in 1971 because of EEOC.)

ABC7
— Trump: Mattis out as of Jan. 1; deputy to be acting chief – CNN (DIERSEN: Have you been let go earlier than your “planned departure.” I had planned to retire no sooner than 2003 when I would be 55 years old and eligible for a regular Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) pension. But in 1997, when I was 49 years old, my Democrat GAO superiors succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer.” Consequently, my CSRS pension is only 41% of what my GAO salary was in today’s dollars. In 1971, I wanted a successful career in the automotive industry. But EEOC ended all that when Oldsmobile withdrew a job offer that I had accepted saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. That made me unemployed because Firestone had fired me for accepting that offer. I had to get a job fast because I had a financial hardship draft deferment to help support my mother and brother. Because of the aforesaid, I accepted a job offer from IRS.)
https://abc7chicago.com/politics/trump-mattis-out-as-of-jan-1/4954503/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump announced on Sunday he would replace Defense Secretary James Mattis at the start of the new year, two months earlier than Mattis’ planned departure. “I am pleased to announce that our very talented Deputy Secretary of Defense, Patrick Shanahan, will assume the title of Acting Secretary of Defense starting January 1, 2019. Patrick has a long list of accomplishments while serving as Deputy, + previously Boeing. He will be great!” Trump tweeted. Mattis announced his resignation on Thursday with a letter saying his views were not aligned with Trump, who said Mattis would retire at the end of February. A source familiar with the matter said Trump was mad at the extensive coverage given to Mattis’ resignation and therefore was forcing him to leave earlier than he originally planned.)

WASHINGTON POST
— Which boxes to check? College hopefuls weigh race, identity and affirmative action. – Nick Anderson (DIERSEN: What if I had claimed Swedish ancestry? What is your national origin? During the 1840s and 1850s, all my ancestors immigrated to northeast Illinois from what is now Germany. Of course, needless-to-say, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always used that against me. In my defense, I stress that my grandfather on my father’s side fought the Germans during WWI, that my uncles on my mother’s side fought the Germans during WWII, and that my father would have fought the Germans during WWII if he had not been 4-F. Further, according to http://dna.ancestry.com, my ancestry is 33% Europe West, 28% Scandinavia, 24% Great Britain, 11% Ireland, 2% Europe East, 1% Finland/Northwest Russia, and 1% Italy/Greece. What if I had claimed Swedish ancestry?)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sabria Kazmi’s background defies easy classification. She has grandparents from Tennessee, Iraq and two countries in South Asia. So when the 18-year-old filled out her college application, she puzzled over what boxes to check. The task is all the more sensitive this year amid the mounting debate over the role of race and ethnicity in admissions. First, Kazmi came to white. Check. Then Asian. Check. Followed by Middle Eastern and Pakistani. Check, check. She found a blank space to write in her Bangladeshi roots. Kazmi, a high school senior in Northern Virginia, could have gone further because one grandmother is part Cherokee. But she stopped there. “I remember someone once telling me something like, ‘Oh, you should put Native American on your college applications. It will help you,’ ” Kazmi said. “I of course did not because it would not be fair for me to claim to have the same culture and to have faced the same obstacles as someone with a larger connection to their Native American ancestry.” The roiling national debate over affirmative action in college admissions has raised the stakes for these questions about identity. Hundreds of thousands of applicants are wrestling with whether and how to describe their race and ethnicity and what that information should mean to the gatekeepers reading their files.)

When I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old, they did not want me to transfer, but failing that, they wanted me to transfer as a GS-4 Step 1 (currently $32,978/year) intern, that is, to suffer a $58,902/year (64%) pay cut in today’s dollars. They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, or veteran. They viciously demonized, denigrated, and condemned the fact a) that I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880/year, b) that much of what IRS Revenue Officers do is similar to what GAO Analysts do, c) that I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, d) that I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976, and e) that I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul. They were furious that I transferred with me almost 12 years of federal seniority, 30 days of unused vacation days, and 130 unused sick days.)

ABC7
— FULL COVERAGE: George HW Bush funeral plans, legacy and a look back at his life
https://abc7chicago.com/society/watch-george-hw-bush-funeral-plans-life-and-legacy/4808060/
— More than 50,000 hens killed in egg farm fire in Grant Park, Illinois (DIERSEN: I am related to the Mussmans. I visited this farm with my parents and brother many times during the 1950s and 1960s. For many years, the Mussmans and the Diersens got together once a month on a Saturday evening alternating between their homes. In the early 1950s, Ralph Mussman (https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2008-03-06-0803051510-story.html)  saved me from drowning when I fell off a pier at a lake in Wisconsin.   He  took me on my first plane ride; his daughter Sandy and I sat in the back seat of a rented Piper Cub. During the 1970s, his getting a major contract to supply McDonald’s with eggs for its new Egg McMuffin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMuffin) helped him to dramatically expand his egg business. I hunted pheasants on his farm a number of times. During the 1960s, my father worked for him part-time for a while delivering eggs to homes in Park Forest.  During the 1970s, a friend of mine who worked for the Secret Service rented a small plane in northwest Indiana and we landed on the air strip on this farm and visited with Ralph. Ralph owned a 1964 Oldsmobile Starfire that helped spark my interest in cars.)
https://abc7chicago.com/more-than-50000-hens-killed-in-egg-farm-fire/4829385/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The fire broke out at about 2:30 a.m. at Mussman’s Back Acres at 9998 N 16000E Road in Grant Park, Ill. and the fire was raised to a fifth alarm before it was struck out, fire officials said. Chopper 7HD flew overhead as firefighters poured water onto the farm. The Grant Park Fire Department said five buildings at the plant were damaged, with two receiving heavy fire damage and the other three damaged by heavy smoke. The company said two of the two barns are a total loss. A spokesperson for the farm, Brian Birch, said the quick actions of the Grant Park Fire Department help to save at least 250,000 to 300,000 hens. No people were hurt. Michigan-based Konos purchased the farm in 2015. Mussman’s serves several Chicagoland retailers. Despite the fire, Birch says Konos will be able to fulfill all of its contracts. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Firefighters from a number of south suburban departments responded, including from Orland Park, Palos and Frankfort. Mussman’s Back Acres’ website says it is a family-owned farm and they also grow their own feed. The company said there should be no supply interruption.)

— Here’s how to pay your property taxes now (if you want) — 3 months early – Rachel Hinton
https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/county-county-property-tax-treasurer-2019-pay-early/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The decision to post the bills now is in response to a large number of requests from taxpayers, accountants and tax advisors, the treasurer’s office said in a press release. This is the earliest that first installment payments have been accepted by the county. Treasurer Maria Pappas said making the tax bills available this far in advance makes the process easier and more transparent and gives taxpayers more time to get questions answered — particularly about the federal tax law that went into effect earlier this year. Before that law, all local income and property taxes were deductible from income taxes. Now, there is a $10,000 cap on deductions for state and local taxes. “If they want to pay now, they can, and if they want to go to an accountant to understand the new Trump law, they can,” Pappas said.)

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-berrios-family-new-jobs-20181204-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: t didn’t take long for former Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios’ sister and one of his close friends to land new government jobs, though they did have to take a major pay cut. Carmen Berrios and Victoria LaCalamita started work Monday with the Illinois secretary of state. That office is led by Jesse White, who cut a campaign radio ad for Berrios, the former chairman of the Cook County Democratic Party and an unabashed defender of old-school patronage politics. The secretary of state’s office, which has around 3,700 jobs, has long been known as a patronage haven under both Democrats and Republicans. The two women will each make $37,992 a year as public service supervisors in the Vehicle Services Department, said Dave Druker, White’s spokesman. Druker said the two were hired to fill open positions after going through an application process and were “graded based on experience and training.” Carmen Berrios and LaCalamita both resigned their executive jobs in the assessor’ office last weekend, before newly elected Assessor Fritz Kaegi took over Monday. Carmen Berrios was being paid $126,000 as deputy assessor in charge of tax services and outreach, and LaCalamita was being paid $139,000 as deputy assessor of financial operations.)

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/court-cites-free-speech-in-striking-down-part-of-federal-law-over-statements-on-illegal-immigration
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A federal appeals court has tossed out parts of a law that would punish those who would knowingly encourage immigrants to come to, or remain, in the U.S. illegally. A three-judge panel of the San Francisco-based 9th Circuit concluded the federal law unconstitutionally bans a range of protected speech. The Justice Department prosecuted a San Jose woman who ran an immigration consulting firm, for allegedly helping arrange green cards for those working in the country illegally. The judges concluded the law’s reach was overbroad.)

— Even if you loathe Trump, vote Republican – Hugh Hewitt
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-perspec-votegop-midterms-democrats-disaster-pelosi-schumer-0801-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Electing Democrats to a majority in the House or the Senate at the height of the party’s lurch left would be a disaster: Impeachment, demands for massive income tax hikes and the effort to abolish ICE would follow, while also throwing the military rebuild into reverse and the economy into paralysis because of the inability of business to predict the future with anything like certainty. A radicalized Democratic Party puffed by a Trump-loathing Manhattan-Beltway elite wouldn’t bring us a political environment as fraught as 1861 or even 1968, but the Clinton impeachment and the Watergate scandal eras are fair parallels to the atmosphere that would follow if Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., returns to power or Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., gets his wish to run the Senate. So even if you loathe the president, vote Republican. The downside of Democratic majorities in either house of Congress is so much larger than another two years like the last two. Both 2017 and 2018 have been polarizing and stressful for sure, but very productive for national security and economic vitality. Are most voters going to choose venting over their pocketbooks and their security? I hope not.)

— Union says Gov. Rauner is dragging feet on step raises – Doug Finke (DIERSEN: What pay increases have you received? Because of cost of living adjustments, step increases, and promotions, my pay increased every year that I worked for Post Office 1966-1969, IRS 1971-1980, and GAO 1980-1997, except 1980 when I took a $19,203 (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO. In today’s dollars, my pay increased from $15.85/hour to $16.91/hour while I worked for the Post Office; from $45,703/year to $91,880/year while I worked for IRS; and from $72,677/year to $125,325/year while worked for GAO. My critics/opponents argue that those increases prove that my Democrat superiors in the federal government do not discriminate against me or retaliate against me. But I argue that if they had not discriminated or retaliated against me, they would have promoted me to GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40. I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)

https://chicago.suntimes.com/chicago-politics/kennedy-releases-economic-plan-says-structural-racism-must-be-addressed/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: At an unveiling of their economic plan Wednesday, gubernatorial candidate Chris Kennedy and running mate Ra Joy didn’t back down from comments last week about Mayor Rahm Emanuel pushing minorities out of the city. Both said their economic plan could help stem what they called a “mass exodus” of people leaving both the Chicago and the state but some “ugly and inconvenient” truths, namely structural racism, still must be addressed. “There are some who suggest race has no place in a political campaign,” Joy said, citing, among other things, racist emails sent by employees in the Chicago Department of Water Management that led to a staff shakeup. “Until race doesn’t play a role in our government agencies, race has a proper role to play in our campaign.”)

Dwellers in blue-leaning states on the coasts have long benefited from being able to write off their high state income taxes, as well as their hefty local property taxes. But the new bill lets them deduct these only up to $10,000 per year. Currently, nearly half of US homes are worth itemizing — but under the legislation, that would shrink to 14 percent because of the lost tax breaks, a study by real estate company Zillow said.)
