CHAMPAIGN/URBANA NEWS GAZETTE
— Sam’s a sham – Editorial
http://www.news-gazette.com/opinion/editorials/2018-06-27/editorial-sams-sham.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The only people happier that McCann to see him enter the contest between Republican incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrat J.B. Pritzker are Democrats who hope that McCann, a nominal Republican, will draw enough votes from Rauner to give Pritzker the win. The Democratic Governors Association issued a statement gloatingly predicting that McCann’s candidacy will draw hard-line conservatives from the GOP, further complicating Rauner’s efforts to unify the party behind him. “Just when he needs to turn to the general election, Bruce Rauner will have to keep refighting the battles of the primary,” said DGA Illinois communications director Sam Salustro. McCann, who is running as a representative of a new Conservative Party, indicated that he’s running as a proponent of gun rights and lower taxes. To hear him talk, he’s a proud conservative ideologue. But that’s just rhetoric. McCann is running — and he knows he’s running — to ensure the defeat of Rauner, with whom he has publicly crossed swords, and the election of Pritzker. . .Second, Rauner has alienated conservatives, particularly with his decision to sign legislation providing taxpayer-funded abortions. He barely won the primary against little-known state Rep. Jeanne Ives, who challenged Rauner from the right. Whether Rauner can get those conservatives back remains undetermined. He keeps reminding them that he’s all that stands between them and complete Democratic control of the state. But ideologues of both the right and left can’t bear any candidate who, in their view, double-crosses them on even a single issue. In that sense, McCann’s candidacy is a direct consequence of Gov. Rauner’s own actions, a hurdle that he unintentionally created and one that will be difficult to overcome.)

DECATUR DAILY
— Creating a compassionate and workable immigration policy – Franklin Johnson, Falkville (DIERSEN: All my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes want cheap labor.)
http://www.decaturdaily.com/opinion/letters_to_editor/creating-a-compassionate-and-workable-immigration-policy/article_41a80bff-d25c-5126-85a9-946e653a9c09.html
(FROM THE LETTER: I don’t know how you can do it. You continue to frame the immigration crisis as a struggle between persecuted families yearning for a better life opposed by hard-hearted white nativists determined to maintain racial purity. Right before your eyes, elements of both political parties are trying to impose slavery — not legal slavery, but economic and political slavery on a whole class of people. They talk humanity, but their purpose is profit and control: 1. Cheap labor from people who won’t or can’t complain; 2. A servant class who can be manipulated because of their lack of education and their dependence. You deny that you are in favor of open borders, yet you oppose any workable effort to stanch the flow: a wall, zero tolerance, moratoriums, and most of all, deportation for those who broke the law getting here as a deterrent. Your idea of immigration reform is amnesty for all who will take a token pledge. You appear not to be concerned about what happens to children who arrive here unescorted. They vanish from their foster homes, and you don’t consider what hells are being imposed on them as they’re scattered through the country. You refuse to say how many new immigrants is enough and you oppose setting standards for those we accept. You quote Emma Lazarus, but you don’t recognize that immigration was once a controlled process. You try to shame us for opposing this travesty while ignoring the results on the Americans impacted. Speak up. Line it out. What is your idea of a compassionate and workable immigration policy without the platitudes, histrionics, and tear-jerking?)

Denny Heck, of Washington, is helping lead the Democrat’s effort to pick up the 23 seats needed to regain control of the House. He said trash talking Trump will only go so far. Republicans also are encouraging House candidates to focus on local issues instead of the latest national headlines.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-met-abortion-medicaid-taxpayer-funded-illinois-20180523-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner outraged his party’s conservative base by signing the legislation in September. Then in the March primary he narrowly defeated challenger Jeanne Ives, a state lawmaker whose televised campaign ad featured a young woman thanking the governor “for making all Illinois families pay for my abortions.” Anti-abortion organizations along with some Republican lawmakers sued to block the measure and, after a judge dismissed their case, appealed to the Illinois State Supreme Court in February. The suit is pending. “The fact that the government is using taxpayer money to fund abortion is reprehensible to me,” said Tim Moore, president of Springfield Right to Life, one of the plaintiffs. “I’m subsidizing an immoral act. I’m subsidizing the culture of death. The government, which is supposed to protect life, is willfully taking part in the slaughter of innocents.”)

My Democrat IRS superiors not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Where is the Republican primary strength in your township? It definitely is in the west side of DuPage County’s Milton Township. In the March 20, 2018 Republican primary, of the township’s 130 precincts, of its 73 precincts on its west side, 40 were RED (between 35.5% and 17.8% of registered voters cast Republican ballots), 19 were YELLOW (between 17.6% and 13.2%), and 14 were BLUE (between 13.2% and 1.1%). Of its 57 precincts on its east side, only 3 were RED (between 35.5% and 17.8%), 25 were YELLOW (between 17.6% and 13.2%), and 29 were BLUE (between 13.2% and 1.1%). – Dave Diersen

What percent of those in your neighborhood, in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, and in Illinois are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time? In my precinct, in the 2016 general election, 211 voted for Clinton while only 137 voted for Trump. In the 2016 primary election, 93 voted for Kasich while only 21 voted for Trump. However, in the March 20 primary election, 68 voted for Ives, while only 43 voted for Rauner, and only 15 of Milton Township’s 130 precincts had a higher percentage Republican turnout – 122 (22.2%) of the precinct’s 504 registered voters cast Republican ballots. Further, the precincts to the east, southeast, southwest, and west all had high Republican turnouts in the March 20 primary election. Jeanne Ive’s Precinct 65 to the east had a 24.9% turnout, Robert Jacobsen’s Precinct 25 where Roskam lives to the southeast had a 24.1% Republican turnout, Beth Tatro’s Precinct 130 to the southwest had a 33.5% Republican turnout, and Ron Menna’s Precinct 85 to the west had a 21.8% Republican turnout.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: That was made clear during last weekend’s Republican Party of Iowa state convention, attended by roughly 1,200 party activists, leaders and elected officials. State party chairman Jeff Kaufmann devoted much of his remarks to the campaign for governor, but also rallied the crowd to express their support for the president. Kaufmann asked the crowd to show whether they support Trump, and nearly everyone in the building stood and cheered. “Keep it up, President Trump,” Kaufmann yelled during his typically fiery speech. Kaufmann told the crowd he realizes some of Trump’s tweets “make you pause,” but said Trump must use Twitter to communicate to his supporters.)

— Trump Valiantly Tried to Save America – Ilana Mercer
https://townhall.com/columnists/ilanamercer/2018/06/23/trump-valiantly-tried-to-save-america-n2493448
(FROM THE ARTICLE: By now most Americans, for or against, get the idea. All an individual or family need do to live in America, and off the avails of the American taxpayer, is to arrive at an approved port of entry and “lodge a legal claim to stay.” That’s it. The same understanding animates an entire, parasitical industry that has arisen to coach the claimants in their claims-making. The refugee and illegal-migrant racket sprung-up on the backs of the American people is Third World cronyism at its best. “The Trump administration plans to pay a Texas nonprofit nearly half a billion dollars, this year, to care for immigrant children who were detained crossing the U.S. border illegally, reports Bloomberg.” Did you vote for that? Brazen border-crossers “rarely hide from border agents,” for they know the rules of the game are that there aren’t any rules. Not for them, not for the lawless. The law-abiding pay. The profits from the immigration industry, material and political, are privatized; the costs are socialized. It has taken a president, in the person of Donald J. Trump, and his attorney general, Jeff Sessions, to expose for all to see a shameful, likely irreversible, fact: American birthright has been frittered away for a mess of pottage. In exchange for throwing America open to The World, Americans get crime, poverty, unemployment, depressed wages; environmental despoliation; overburdened public services, and zero comity and harmony across their communities. Or, more like hate. For to oppose this transformative political give-away is to be branded a hater and be hounded, at home, by a Fifth Column of values-enforcers. There’s no finessing it. This selling of the patrimony and heritage of Americans is theft, plain and simple. There is no hiding it. Peddling of stolen goods for political favors is the handiwork of political representatives, of legislators. Through legislative sleight-of-hand and international treaty making American politicians have incrementally robbed a people of their national and territorial sovereignty, as well as their shared identity.)

If you claim to be Republican, but you want “a more inclusive and easier pathway to citizenship for Dreamers,” you shout that you are a Democrat.)
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/congress/republicans-ignore-trump-keep-pushing-to-pass-immigration-reform
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republicans say negotiations now center on whether to add E-Verify and an immigrant agriculture program into the legislation, and many are hoping for a vote next week. Many conservatives have been clamoring for the bill to include a provision mandating employers use E-Verify to ensure new hires are legal. “It might be a difference maker,” Cole said. Meanwhile, an agriculture or “guest worker” program would attract votes from lawmakers whose districts rely on immigrant farm workers. . .The 41 GOP “no” votes were cast mostly by moderates who wanted a more inclusive and easier pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, who came illegally as children. The measure was authored by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va. It would provide legal status for about 700,000 Dreamers and offered a much more difficult pathway to citizenship. Conservatives say the leadership should simply take the Goodlatte bill and make a few changes to attract moderates, such as expanding the pathway to citizenship to all 1.8 million people who fit the Dreamer category. The Goodlatte measure, which is co-authored by Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, R-Texas, includes both E-Verify and a guest worker program. It ends chain migration, the diversity visa lottery program, and authorizes border wall funding.)

https://www.brookings.edu/blog/the-avenue/2018/06/21/us-white-population-declines-and-generation-z-plus-is-minority-white-census-shows/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: he U.S. Census Bureau’s release of race and age statistics for 2017 points to two noteworthy milestones about the nation’s increasingly aging white and growing diverse population. First, for the first time since the Census Bureau has released these annual statistics, they show an absolute decline in the nation’s white non-Hispanic population—accelerating a phenomenon that was not projected to occur until the next decade. Second, the new numbers show that for the first time there are more children who are minorities than who are white, at every age from zero to nine. This means we are on the cusp of seeing the first minority white generation, born in 2007 and later, which perhaps we can dub Generation “Z-Plus.”)

It’s been more than three months since the primary, and just when candidates want to turn their attention to the general election, Rauner is still dealing with his fractured party. On WJBC, Rauner once again claimed he’s “reached out” to Ives, something he’s said before that was found not to be true. Who else is Rauner calling to reunite the party? The properties include a 6,870-square-foot mansion on a half-acre lot in Winnetka; two units, including a penthouse, in a luxury high-rise overlooking Millennium Park; a waterfront villa in the Florida Keys with a 72-foot-long pool; ranches in Montana and Wyoming; a condo in an upscale Utah ski resort; and a penthouse overlooking Central Park in New York. “Bruce Rauner owns nine homes and he’s appealed his property taxes 22 times, but now he’s attacking someone else for the same thing? But the bias continues. Forty-one percent of companies around the world surveyed by Deloitte Consulting said they considered aging of their workforces a competitive disadvantage. In 1970, when I was 21 years old, after I earned a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU, I accepted the only job offer that I got – working for the Firestone Store in Chicago Heights. I was draft bait. Potential employers did not believe that my application for a financial hardship would be granted. Further, employers were under tremendous pressure to hire minorities, females, and veterans. 7 months later, after my draft deferment application had been approved, my Firestone boss fired me when I told him that I had accepted a job offer from Oldsmobile. But Oldsmobile withdrew that job offer saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. That directly resulted in my accepting a job offer from IRS. IRS offered me the job because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take it.)

http://www.breitbart.com/2018-elections/2018/06/17/gop-pr-ryan-amnesty-not-amnesty-you-are-looking-for/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The message tries to downplay the demand by GOP donors for more cheap labor, yet it describes immigration as a tool for business groups and also reveals that Ryan plans to expand the H-2B visa-worker program. Some of the phrases chosen by McMorris Rodgers are even plagiarized from pro-amnesty speeches by President Barack Obama, who also supported cheap-labor immigration.)
— Schumer: Ryan’s Amnesty Bill is ‘Doomed to Fail’ For Cutting Legal Immigration – Neil Munro
http://www.breitbart.com/immigration/2018/06/18/schumer-ryan-amnesty-bill-doomed-fail/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: No immigration bill can get through the Senate without support from 60 Senators. That high number means a bill has to be backed by roughly 15 Democratic Senators plus nearly all of the GOP’s cheap-labor caucus, which includes at least 20 Senators out of the 51 GOP members in the Senate. In February, for example, Sen. Susan Collins and eight other GOP Senators pushed a surprise bill that would have provided a priority-amnesty for all 8 million illegal immigrants who are holding jobs.)

— Other pensions can put Social Security benefits at risk – Elliot Raphaelson (DIERSEN: My Social Security is dramatically reduced, it is only $2,064/year, because I get a Civil Service Retirement System pension. http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/sns-201806051948–tms–savingsgctnzy-a20180605-20180605-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: he most common complaints I hear from readers about Social Security relate to the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). These provisions reduce Social Security benefits, and those affected don’t believe they are fair. One class of people affected are those who receive a pension from a job in which they haven’t paid Social Security FICA taxes, such as public-sector workers like police officers and firefighters. Many federal, state and local employees are enrolled in retirement systems that are not part of Social Security. Federal employees hired before 1984 who stayed under Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) are affected. Federal workers who retired under the newer Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS) are not subject to WEP because they paid Social Security FICA taxes. Some foreign workers are also affected.)

But of course, my critics/opponents reject that. They hint/imply/argue/shout that Oldsmobile withdrew its job offer because it found out from my Firestone Stores boss that I was a bad person. My Firestone Stores boss did not hire me. His superiors hired me and sent me to his store. http://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/391687-nj-gop-house-candidate-calls-diversity-a-bunch-of-crap
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the video, Grossman calls diversity an “un-American” concept, implies that the country was better off before affirmative action and says black Americans would benefit from stronger immigration enforcement. “The whole idea of diversity is a bunch of crap and un-American,” Grossman says. Diversity, he says, is “an excuse by Democrats, communists and socialists, basically, to say that we’re not all created equal, that if some people or somebody is less qualified, they will get a job anyway or they’ll get into college anyway because of what group or what box they fit into.” “Once we say that Republicans want these traditional ways that made America great for all these years, then maybe African-Americans will realize if we enforce our immigration laws, they’ll be more opportunities for Americans of all backgrounds,” he adds. “When we talk about women saying ‘Well we need special care for child care, we need this credit and that credit.’ I say, wait a minute, when America was great, one parent alone earned more than enough money to comfortably support a family.” On Monday, Grossman, a noted supporter of President Trump, told Philly.com that he stands by his comments. He also contended that American Bridge PAC is trying to brand Trump-aligned Republicans as “radical and unacceptable.”)

On July 5, 2003, Cox came with the other four announced candidates for U.S. Senate (Chirinjeev Kathuria, Andy McKenna, Jim Oberweis, and Jack Ryan) to a picnic that I arranged in the Prairie Path Park in my precinct for voters in my precinct, in Jeanne Ive’s precinct to the east, and in Debra Olson’s precinct to the west. The 200 attendees included Randy Hultgren. We can forever ask ourselves, “What if Trump had endorsed Ives?”)
http://www.news-gazette.com/opinion/columns/2018-06-10/jim-dey-perennial-illinois-office-seeker-finds-more-success-out-west.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Those who recall Cox’s political activities in Illinois have watched with amazement as he’s made his run in California. “He was one of those guys who was always kind of out there running,” said Chicago lawyer and former state GOP Chairman Pat Brady. Rockford political consultant Jim Thacker, who worked both for and against Cox, described him as a “self-made guy” who “always had the credentials and the smarts” to be a credible candidate. “The circumstances were never right for him,” Thacker said. “I didn’t know he had even moved to California. But he’s sure getting his 15 minutes of fame now.” Cox’s endless runs for public office here created an image as that of a political gadfly, someone not to be taken seriously by the news media or the political establishment.)

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/06/10/may-2018-the-third-consecutive-month-of-record-background-checks/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: There were 19 consecutive months of record background checks under Barack Obama. Those began in May 2015 and lasted through November 2016. They were driven by a non-stop assault on the Second Amendment, characterized by attempts to secure all-out bans on certain types of weapons and “high capacity” magazines, as well as efforts to implement universal background checks and other controls. Such fears largely vanished under the Trump administration and record levels of background checks faded. Then came the February 14, 2018, Parkland school shooting, which was immediately followed by leftist celebrities, student gun control activists, and the establishment media relentlessly pushing for all-out bans on certain types of weapons and “high capacity” magazines, as well as efforts to implement universal background checks and other controls. Now background checks for gun sales are surging, NRA membership is up to 6 million, and donations to gun rights’ groups are increasing.)

FED SMITH
— Pay Parity and a 2019 Pay Raise for Federal Employees – Ralph R. Smith
https://www.fedsmith.com/2018/06/10/pay-parity-2019-pay-raise-federal-employees/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The other potential factor is politics. Federal employee unions are often the public face and out in front on articulating arguments on behalf of federal employees. The unions are often supporting one political party (Democrats) over the other (Republicans). While Republicans are often thought of as the strong supporters for higher military spending, etc., there are no unions in front of the public spending time and money on behalf of one political party. That may be a conundrum for federal employees and their representatives. It can work out well, particularly for unions as an institution, when Democrats occupy the White House and one or both Houses of Congress. At other times, it can be a disadvantage if the federal workforce is perceived as a political force instead of a politically neutral, professional cadre of people supporting the current administration in power. We do not know, of course, what the final pay raise will be for military or civilian employees in 2019. If I were betting on the outcome, I would feel secure in assuming that whatever the percentage, it will be higher for military than for civilians.)

NEW STRAITS TIMES
— Can our retirement funds sustain our golden years? – Rajen Devadason (DIERSEN: Have you slashed your lifestyle expectations? Since 1997, when I was 49 years old, my income, and therefore, my lifestyle has been dramatically slashed. Since 1997, my Civil Service Retirement System pension has been only 41% of what my salary was in 1997 in today’s dollars, that is, only $51,864 instead of $125,325.)
https://www.nst.com.my/lifestyle/sunday-vibes/2018/06/378452/can-our-retirement-funds-sustain-our-golden-years

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Aspiring to improve Most of us, however, don’t wish to maintain our lifestyle. We aspire to improve it year by year! This desired escalation in lifestyle tacks on a few percentage points to the appropriate inflation rate for our lives every year. So by way of illustration, if our long run national inflation rate is 3.6 per cent a year, and your specific desired escalation of lifestyle is 2.4 per cent a year, then your annual personal inflation rate = 3.6 per cent + 2.4 per cent = 6 per cent. Then, using the Rule of 72, we find that you’ll need twice as much money in 12 years (= 72 / 6) to live the life you want in 2030. So, if you’re 25 years old and spending RM2,500 a month in 2018, it is straightforward to work out, using our Rule of 72, that in 12 years (age 37 in 2030), you’ll need RM5,000 a month. What is staggering to comprehend though is 12 years after that in 2042, you won’t be able to comfortably get by on RM5,000 + RM2,500 = RM7,500. No. You’ll need twice your needed amount at age 37 at age 49, which is RM5,000 x 2 = RM10,000 a month! Then at 61, you’ll want RM20,000, and so on. The longer you live, the more money you’ll need unless you choose (or more likely are forced) to slash your lifestyle expectations.)

What does Rauner say to those who increasingly conclude that he does NOT want those who voted for Trump and/or for Ives to help reelect him on November 6, 2018? (FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner is trailing Democratic gubernatorial rival J.B. Pritzker by at least 15 points, according to the May edition of The Illinois Poll. The telephone survey contacted 1,208 voters May 22-24. While Rauner holds narrow leads in northern and central Illinois, he has surged in the southern part of the state, with a 46-to-30 percent lead over Pritzker. Predictably, Pritzker is leading Rauner 76 to 11 percent in Democratic Chicago and suburban Cook County. The poll also asked residents whether they believe Rauner deserves to be re-elected to a second term in office. Thirty four percent of respondents said yes, while 53 percent said no.)

https://www.theday.com/article/20180610/OP04/180619985

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Pew Research Center is out with a fascinating poll on “news fatigue.” The poll finds: “Almost seven-in-ten Americans (68%) feel worn out by the amount of news there is these days, compared with only three-in-ten who say they like the amount of news they get,” according to the report. “The portion expressing feelings of information overload is in line with how Americans felt during the 2016 presidential election, when a majority expressed feelings of exhaustion from election coverage.” On one hand, this is understandable given the constant drumbeat of scandal and outrage. On the other hand, no one forces Americans to watch or read the news. It is a choice whether to consume it or not, and judging from those stunning poll results (e.g. only 43 percent polled last year could name a single Supreme Court justice), many people do a fine job of being uninformed. Nevertheless, to the degree one attempts to be a diligent citizen, it seems to many that they are drinking out of the proverbial firehose. Looking a little closer, we see an interesting phenomenon. Distaste for President Donald Trump — and perhaps glee at his failures — makes Democrats more eager to ingest as much news as they can. “While majorities of both Republicans and Democrats express news fatigue, Republicans are feeling it more,” according the Pew’s findings. “Roughly three-quarters (77%) of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents feel worn out over how much news there is, compared with about six-in-ten Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (61%). This elevated fatigue among Republicans tracks with them having less enthusiasm than Democrats for the 2018 elections. The lack of interest in the news and in the election suggests that an outsize segment of Republicans don’t want to hear that much about, or take stock of, the president and Congress they elected. Yes, we can sympathize that it is stressful to see someone you were warned not to vote for display just about every rotten trait you chose to overlook during the campaign (e.g. dishonesty, vulgarity, racism). Ironically, the less-informed people feel the most overwhelmed, even if they don’t actually consume a whole lot of news. (“While a majority of those who follow the news most of the time (62%) are feeling worn out by the news, a substantially higher portion (78%) of those who less frequently get news say they are fatigued by the amount of it that they see.”) There may be a strong segment of the electorate that is trying to hide from the news — but just can’t. The demographic groups that most strongly supported Trump are now the most exhausted by the news. “Some demographic groups — most notably white Americans — are more likely than others to feel exhausted by the news,” the poll finds. “Nearly three-quarters (73%) of white Americans express fatigue with the amount of news, much higher than among both Hispanic (55%) and black Americans (55%). Women are also somewhat more likely than men to feel worn out (71% vs. 64%, respectively).” There is some good news in this for the anti-Trump forces. It seems they are more energized (perhaps by a sense of vindication or by a desire to stop the Trump madness) than Republicans, who, gosh, just don’t seem to want to be reminded of what and whom they voted for. They are not “tired of winning.”)
