https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/supporters-protesters-rosemont-pence-tax-cut-speech/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The new Illinois Democratic Party executive director rallied protesters in Rosemont on Friday in advance of a speech by Vice President Mike Pence touting President Donald Trump’s tax-cut policy. Pence’s speech, titled “Tax Cuts to Put America First,” is part of a series sponsored by America First Policies, a non-profit organization that promotes the policies of the Trump Administration — the Rosemont stop is the 17th on the tour. Other speakers at the event included U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., and Gov. Bruce Rauner, who was to introduce Pence. At previous speeches in Iowa and Kansas City, Pence talked about energy, agriculture and labor plans that were all implemented to achieve Trump’s campaign promise to “Make America great again.” In Rosemont, people from around the state, decked out in flag shawls and bright red “Make America Great Again” baseball caps, waited to hear from the vice president.)

This time, on Thursday, it was the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. The agency that handles our local storm and sewage water agreed to pay $95,000 to its former executive director, David St. Pierre, along with six months’ worth of health insurance, according to the Better Government Association. DAILY HERALD
— Pence fires up voters for upcoming midterm elections – Christopher Placek and Jake Griffin
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180713/pence-fires-up-voters-for-upcoming-midterm-elections
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Almost immediately after Pence took the stage, protesters inside the Westin O’Hare grand ballroom made their presence known. In total, Pence’s speech was interrupted five times by protesters, who were escorted out of the building by police. One woman held a yellow flag that read, “Trump and Pence must go.” When Pence began to praise U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, of Wheaton, a man said, “Has anyone seen Peter Roskam? I haven’t seen him. Where is he?” Each time, the crowd of about 600 chanted “USA! USA!” Tickets to the event, called “Tax Cuts to Put America First,” were free and available by registering on the website of America First Policies, the group connected to the pro-Trump America First Action super PAC. “Thanks for coming out today. I’m really grateful for almost everybody that came,” Pence joked to the crowd. “I respect everybody that came. That’s what freedom sounds like.” Rosemont authorities said no one was charged, and they described the protest of some 100 people outside the hotel as peaceful. Police, at the behest of the Secret Service, pushed protesters across River Road to the east sidewalk northeast of the hotel. Rosemont public safety officers used their bikes as crowd control. Pence’s caravan used a back entrance, avoiding the protesters. “We are advocating getting rid of the Trump/Pence regime through persistent, persistent nonviolent protests,” said Tricey Morelli, spokesman for the Chicago chapter of Refuse Fascism.)

ABC7
— Rauner stirs controversy with conservative base over same-sex wedding – Craig Wall (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, it looks like Rauner’s main strategy to get reelected is to dump individuals, dump organizations, dump companies, and dump governments that support the traditional family, right to life, and/or immigration planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform.)
http://abc7chicago.com/politics/rauner-stirs-controversy-with-conservative-base-over-same-sex-wedding/3753981/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The wedding picture, posted on Instagram, was considered a slap in the face by many social conservatives and Evangelical Christians. Many Republicans had already felt betrayed when Rauner signed HB40 to provide taxpayer funded abortions after promising he would not. “What I’m hearing through our connections and our networks throughout, people are once again saying there he goes again poking social conservatives in the eye,” said Executive Director of the Illinois Family Institute David Smith. Rauner has been very supportive of LGBTQ rights as governor, most recently by participating in Pride parades in Aurora and Chicago. Many Republicans said officiating a same-sex marriage should be a non-issue for voters. “We should put aside some of our differences, because there’s so much more that we agree on, the governor, myself and also conservatives and independents throughout the state of Illinois,” said Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin. “Well, I would hope that voters would appreciate that Bruce is very much in favor of equality of all people,” Cozzi said. Cozzi added if the picture helps voters appreciate Rauner for his stance on equality, that’s a good thing. But for Rauner, rallying conservatives just may not be in the cards. “I don’t think there’s much he can do to win us back, to win many social conservatives back,” Smith said. The governor’s office said the wedding was a personal event, and Rauner’s campaign spokesman wondered why anyone would make a big deal of it. Rauner also officiated a same-sex wedding in December 2017.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-met-rauner-gay-wedding-20180712-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Some socially conservative groups were not cheering Rauner’s role in the wedding. “This is just reminding people that he does have a social agenda, and it’s not conservative, it’s not Republican, and it’s certainly not pro-life,” said Illinois Family Institute executive director David E. Smith. “This is just another reminder of how much damage he has done to the Republican brand and its policy goals.” A Rauner spokesman did not immediately return a request for comment. The governor has largely tried to stay out of the fray of LGBTQ issues, but days before he officiated the wedding, Rauner marched in the Aurora Pride parade. Rauner has regularly drawn criticism from conservatives for supporting other progressive causes. Last year, he signed a controversial bill into law that expanded taxpayer-subsidized abortions. He won the March primary against conservative state Rep. Jeanne Ives by just 3 points.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: So is the GOP guv trying to send a message to conservative voters who are still miffed at his decision to sign abortion and immigration bills unpopular with some conservatives? . . . Either way, Democratic nominee J.B. Pritzker’s campaign is seizing on the Pence visit, which comes amid increasing nervousness amid big exporters and agricultural producers about looming trade wars with China, Europe and Canada. “Pence is a right-wing extremist—signing the harshest abortion laws in the country, opposing marriage equality and transgender rights, supporting shifting HIV/AIDS funds to pay for conversion therapy, and opposing Syrian refugees,” Pritzker’s campaign said in a statement. “If Mike Pence is turning to Bruce Rauner for lessons in damage control, the GOP must have given up all hope in Illinois.”)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Gov. Rauner officiates at gay wedding — conservatives not throwing rice – Tina Sfondeles
https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/gov-rauner-officiates-gay-same-sex-wedding-conservatives-unhappy/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Keep poking social conservatives in the eye Bruce,” tweeted David E. Smith, executive director of the Illinois Family Institute. “You are doing a yeoman’s job of alienating the base.” The Rauners are personal friends of the couple, who are political supporters of the governor, according to an attendee at the wedding. Rauner campaigned as a social moderate, and has said he has no social agenda. But he’s been forced to address several key issues during his first-term — signing a controversial measure that expanded taxpayer-funding of abortion and worked to protect abortions in Illinois should the Supreme Court overturn Roe. v. Wade. He also signed a measure that allowed transgender people to change the sex listed on their birth certificates. Those were among some of the issues that led state Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, to run against Rauner in the March primary, with the governor winning by just 3 points. Many conservative Republicans called the signing of the abortion bill a betrayal. But Rauner denied the claim that earned him the nickname of “Benedict Rauner” and the label of RINO — Republican in name only. Illinois Review, a news source for conservatives, first reported on Rauner at the wedding and the potential conservative backlash. The governor’s office declined comment on the wedding. Less than four years ago, Equality Illinois accused Rauner of ducking social issues that turned some voters off. Just months before the 2014 election, Rauner sent former Illinois GOP Party Chairman Pat Brady to the Pride Parade in Chicago in his place. Gay rights activists supported Democrat Pat Quinn in the race. They campaigned against Rauner, hanging a banner along the parade route, bearing Rauner’s face and his quote on marriage quality: “If I were governor, I would veto it.” Brady stepped down from his post after angering social conservatives when he took a stand in favor of same sex marriage. During the campaign Rauner declined to say whether he supported it. And while he said he had no plans to overturn the same-sex law, he also said if it had landed on his desk as governor he would have vetoed it because voters should have decided the issue. Rauner met with gay rights advocates soon after taking office, telling them he’d direct state agencies to enforce anti-discrimination laws. “I said four years ago, and it’s always been true,” he told the Chicago Sun-Times while campaigning in the final week before the March primary. “I support a woman’s right to decide. I don’t focus on social issues, never have. I’m focused on what unites us: lower taxes, more jobs, ending corruption, and term limits.”)

— Left-Wing Judge Eliminates Work Requirements for Welfare Programs – ANDREW FORCIER (DIERSEN: Of course, my critics/opponents paint my Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) pension and my Social Security as being welfare. They would love it if they could require me to work to continue to get my CSRS pension and my Social Security. They would stress my being able to put GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and send them out every day as proof that I am able-bodied. What type of work would they want me to do? Would it be appropriate for someone with my work experience, education, professional certifications, and professional license?)
https://ijr.com/2018/07/1108510-judge-eliminates-medicaid-work-requirement/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: One of the most commonly agreed-upon approaches to welfare programs is to require an able-bodied person to work when they can, or at least put forth the effort to demonstrate they are in pursuit of gainful employment. Twenty years ago, the idea was so universally accepted that even then-President Bill Clinton signed off on legislation adding an element of personal responsibility to welfare programs. He even had campaigned in 1992 to “end welfare as we have come to know it.” Such requirements have, of late, been a staple of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and even a majority of Democrats can agree that those who are able to work should have to in order to receive benefits.)

CNBC
— Here’s how much Supreme Court justices get paid – Yoni Blumberg
https://www.cnbc.com/2018/07/10/how-much-supreme-court-justices-get-paid.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court on Monday. If confirmed, Kavanaugh, 53, will become one of the most powerful and influential people in government for what could be decades, and he’ll lock in a healthy six-figure salary, too. Kavanaugh currently serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, where judges make $220,600 a year, according to the U.S. Courts website. Associate justices on the Supreme Court make $255,300, while the Chief Justice, currently John Roberts, makes $267,000. These salaries usually increase by $2,000-$3,000 each year. A seat on the court comes with some desirable benefits. Federal judges have the option to enroll in insurance plans through the Federal Employee Health Benefits system, whose website claims it offers “the widest selection of health plans in the country.” And justices can look forward to a generous retirement package. If they retire at 70 after serving 10 years, or at 65 after serving 15 years, they qualify for an annual pension equal to their highest full salary. There is also a summer break when court isn’t in session between July and October. It’s not exactly a vacation, as justices use the summer to prepare for cases scheduled for the fall, but it is when they do most of their traveling, much of which is subsidized, and when they lecture and teach for extra pay. Former justice Antonin Scalia reported going on 28 separate trips to lecture and teach in 2013, and Clarence Thomas earned more than $27,000 in 2015 for lectures at Brigham Young University, Creighton University and George Washington University. Justices have other streams of income, too. Stephen Breyer, for example, reported $45,000 in royalties in 2016 from his book, “The Court and the World,” while Sonia Sotomayor has earned millions for her 2013 memoir, “My Beloved World.” And, of course, some justices invest. When the Supreme Court took a patent case involving Cisco in 2015, Breyer had to sit out because he owns up to $100,000 in Cisco stock. At least six, and perhaps all, of the sitting Supreme Court justices are millionaires, the Center for Public Integrity found after analyzing 2016 financial disclosures. With an estimated net worth just over $6 million, Breyer is the wealthiest justice, with the possible exception of Gorsuch, since when the report was published Gorsuch had yet to disclose his finances for that year. His 2015 disclosure, however, indicated he was worth between $3.1 million and $7.2 million, the Center reported. Kavanaugh claimed to have up to $65,000 in assets, which doesn’t necessarily include items such as cars or mortgages, in a recent financial filing, as well $27,500 in non-investment income on top of his salary, reports Money. The house he shares with his wife and two daughters is valued at $1 million.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Standing in the crowd was Jane Pettinger, a 57-year-old college professor holding a cardboard sign decorated with two flags and the words “TRUE PATRIOT.” “Serving your country rather than deferring the draft or being a draft dodger — that’s patriotism,” said Pettinger, who was in the U.S. Air Force for 7½ years and is critical of Trump for requesting draft deferments during the Vietnam War. “Standing up for democracy, making America actually what it stands for again — that’s democracy, that’s patriotism. https://businessrecord.com/Content/Opinion/Opinion/Article/Guest-Opinion-How-to-run-a-positive-political-campaign/168/963/83117
(FROM THE ARTICLE: What’s negative? Launching personal attacks on your opponent. That practice should have been left behind in junior high (or as it’s now called, middle school). Defining your opponent with derogatory labels and slogans. They are not informative and they insult the voters’ intelligence and sensibilities. Demonizing your opponent. This practice only demeans the one doing it. Taking words and phrases out of context and twisting their meanings. This practice should be beneath the dignity of honest candidates and parties. Manipulating your opponent’s visual image is a similar form of deceit.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democratic governor candidate J.B. Pritzker’s campaign spread $2.5 million late last week to campaign coffers aimed at helping Democrats in the legislature and Cook County. Campaign finance reports show Pritzker gave $1 million to the Democratic Majority fund, which is chaired by House Speaker Michael Madigan and is used to assist Democratic House members and candidates. Another $1 million was headed to two different funds aimed at helping Democrats in the state Senate — $500,000 apiece to the Senate Democratic Victory Fund headed by Senate President John Cullerton and the Illinois Democratic Heartland Committee, which assists Downstate Senate Democrats. Pritzker, a billionaire heir to the Hyatt Hotels fortune, also dropped $500,000 to the Cook County Democratic Party, which is now headed by County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. Democrats are counting on Pritzker to help down-ballot candidates in much the same way that his opponent, Republican Gov. I should write a book about those who were the biggest bullies. At GAO, they succeeded in forcing me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, giving me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranking me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, not promoting me beyond GS-13, getting rid of my mentor in 1987, keeping me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forcing me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. At IRS, they succeeded in not promoting me beyond GS-12, disallowing my education deductions in 1978, getting rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowing my partial day per diem claims in 1974. At the Post Office, they succeeded in forcing me resign in 1969 and disallowing my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

http://www.wirepoints.com/janus-v-afscme-and-the-truth-about-illinois-pensions-in-one-graphic-wirepoints-original/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: There’s one graphic that perfectly captures the absurdity of Illinois pensions over the past three decades. It’s what Justice Samuel Alito described as Illinois’ “generous public-employee retirement packages” when writing for the majority in the Janus v. AFSCME decision. Alito didn’t use this graphic but he could have, because it makes his point. In 1987, pension promises made to active workers and retirees in the state’s five state-run pension plans totaled just $18 billion. By 2016, they had ballooned to $208 billion. That’s a cumulative 1,067 percent increase. Contrast that to the state’s budget (general fund revenues) which was up just 236 percent over the same time period. Or household incomes, which were up just 127 percent. Or inflation, up just 111 percent. Promised pension benefits have blown past any ability of the state, the economy or taxpayers to pay for them.)

Since 2004, GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails have included links to more than 306,200 articles on hundreds of websites. Yet sadly, very few of those websites appreciate that. Virtually none of those websites reciprocate in any way, for example, a) by not charging me to view articles on their websites, b) by emailing me links to relevant articles on their websites, or c) by posting a link on their website to the GOPUSA ILLINOIS website (www.gopillinois.com). With only the rarest of exceptions, I do not include links to articles if I cannot view the articles. JOURNAL & TOPICS
— Letter Demanding Resignation In Maine Township Will Be Sent To Top Republicans – Todd Wessell
https://www.journal-topics.com/articles/letter-demanding-resignation-in-maine-will-be-sent-to-top-republicans/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A letter which demands that Maine Township Republican Committeeman Char Foss-Eggemann of Park Ridge call for the resignation of Township Trustee Dave Carrabotta because of allegations that he inappropriately touched fellow Trustee Kim Jones, has not yet been sent to Eggemann. However, according to some people knowledgeable about the letter, it will soon be mailed to the committeeman as well as Cook County Republican Party leader Sean Morrison, state GOP leader Tim Schneider, and others. Meanwhile, an investigation into the sexual harassment claims by Jones, launched by the town board after May 22 when the charges first surfaced, will take another week and a half to complete, said township Supervisor Laura Morask. She indicated that one more person has to be interviewed by the lawyer assigned to perform the probe. Morask would not comment further. The letter insisting that Eggemann act on the matter was prompted in part by some Republicans demanding that House Speaker Mike Madigan step down because of harassment and bullying complaints leveled against several Democrats. Marilyn Smolenski, Republican candidate who’s running against incumbent Democrat Marty Moylan in the November General Election, has been one of those voices demanding Madigan’s resignation. She has been highly critical of Moylan for not standing up to Madigan by demanding that he resign. Eggemann is a strong supporter of Smolenski, who lives in Park Ridge. Moylan recently blasted Smolenski for backing “one of the biggest perverts in the U.S., Trump.” Added Moylan, “He’s one of the biggest pigs in the U.S. I’m not silent. Tell that Trump backing pistol packing Trump supporter that I back women’s rights and I voted for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).” Smolenski owns a company that sells pistol holders for women. On the advice of the township attorney, Jones confronted Carrabotta with her accusations of inappropriately touching her backside on May 22. Carrabotta flatly denied the allegations and demanded an immediate closed door meeting where the issue could be discussed. Jones accuses Carrabotta of touching her on three separate occasions during township events in late 2017 and 2018. According to people familiar with the letter, it’s believed that at least 10 local Republican women will sign it by the time it is mailed to Eggemann. Among the words used in the letter are “outrageous” and “disturbing.” It also says that Jones has a solid reputation in the community and was slated by committeeman Eggemann to run for the township position. Carrabotta has told the Journal & Topics that the matter is “confidential”. In a statement released yesterday (Tuesday) by State Republican chairman Tim Schneider, he said, “The Illinois Republican Party strongly believes that sexual harassment has no place in any workplace, public or private, and that allegations must be investigated swiftly by independent parties. If the allegations against the Maine Township trustee are true, he has violated the public’s trust and should step down. Until then, the investigation involving the allegations should proceed.”)

https://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/11/29/gingrich-and-the-destruction-of-congressional-expertise/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Unfortunately, Gingrichism lives on. Republican Congressional leaders continually criticize every Congressional agency that stands in their way. In addition to the C.B.O., one often hears attacks on the Congressional Research Service, the Joint Committee on Taxation and the Government Accountability Office. Lately, the G.A.O. has been the prime target. Appropriators are cutting its budget by $42 million, forcing furloughs and cutbacks in investigations that identify billions of dollars in savings yearly. So misguided is this effort that Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma and one of the most conservative members of Congress, came to the agency’s defense. In a report issued by his office on Nov. 16, Senator Coburn pointed out that the G.A.O.’s budget has been cut by 13 percent in real terms since 1992 and its work force reduced by 40 percent — more than 2,000 people. By contrast, Congress’s budget has risen at twice the rate of inflation and nearly doubled to $2.3 billion from $1.2 billion over the last decade. Mr. Coburn’s report is replete with examples of budget savings recommended by G.A.O. He estimated that cutting its budget would add $3.3 billion a year to government waste, fraud, abuse and inefficiency that will go unidentified.)
