WGN TV
— Protesters target local GOP after Health Care bill passes House – TOM NEGOVAN  (DIERSEN: Congressman Peter Roskam spoke at Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti’s outstanding fundraiser at Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton yesterday evening.  This WGN TV posting includes clips on protesters at the fundraiser and Roskam’s answers to reporters’ questions during a press conference that I attended as your GOPUSA Illinois Editor just before he spoke at the fundraiser. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes a) did not want me to know that Roskam was going to speak at the fundraiser or that Roskam would hold a press conference just before he spoke at the fundraiser. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes did not want me to attend the press conference. They almost succeeded in stopping me from attending the press conference, but outstandingly, Roskam granted my appeal and allowed me to attend the press conference. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes in Wheaton and elsewhere have always have done everything that they can to turn Roskam and other activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. against me. Should I write a book about my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes?)
http://wgntv.com/2017/05/04/protesters-target-local-gop-after-health-care-bill-passes-house/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois congressional delegation went right along party lines in the American Health Care bill vote. Every Chicago-area Democrat voted against the American Health Care Act. Every Republican voted for it. 6th District Congressman Peter Roskam returned from Washington this afternoon and has protesters gathered outside his office by evening. In a statement, Gov Bruce Rauner said, “The bill that passed in the U.S. House today continues to be of deep concern to our administration.” He’s concerned about the impact on Medicaid. Chicago’s mayor thinks backers of the AHCA need to worry about the senate. “I think the senate is going to look at this and say this is a non-starter and that it’s not going to happen,” he said. The bill, which passed with just one vote to spare after six weeks of work, is expected to be a much tougher sell in the senate.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Rauner touts ‘self-made’ fortune, hits Pritzker’s ‘inherited wealth’ – Rick Pearson  (DIERSEN: Should everyone involved in government, politics, news media, etc. be required to disclose exactly how they acquired their wealth?  For me, it was money that I earned doing yard work and delivering newspapers 1962-1964; washing dishes 1964-1966; cleaning golf shoes, chipping slag, and pumping gasoline in 1966; delivering mail 1966-1969, working on an automobile assemble line and as a security guard in 1970; selling tires, automotive services, and major appliances 1970-1971; pumping gasoline 1971-1972; collecting delinquent taxes 1971-1980; auditing federal agencies 1980-1997; collecting a Civil Service Retirement System pension since 1997; collecting Social Security since 2010; and inheriting from my mother $56,073 and half interest in 1286 Wood Street in Crete last year.)

— Residents hope new trustees help University Park get back on track – Ted Slowik (DIERSEN: I while I worked for the Park Forest Post Office 1966-1969, I delivered mail in what is now University Park. I bought a new town home in University Park in 1972.  I lived in it full-time 1972-1974 and weekends 1974-1976. I rented it out 1976-1984 and I sold it in 1984. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes who hint/imply/argue/shout THAT I AM A RACIST would never even consider working in or living in University Park.)

— America’s rich get richer as the poor get replaced by robots – Vincent Del Giudice and Wei Lu  (DIERSEN: Can/will robots do what you do/did?  I did yard work, delivered newspapers, washed dishes, cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, pumped gasoline, delivered mail, worked on an automobile assemble line, worked as a security guard, sold tires, automotive services, and major appliances, collected delinquent taxes, and audited federal agencies.)

— Good health requires good health care, not morality police – Mary Schmich  (DIERSEN: To some extent, all my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes promote booze, promote gambling, promote pot, and/or promote other things that harm your physical, mental, and/or financial health.)

— FRONT PAGE WITH COLOR PICTURE: Dick Duchossois, 95, still driving force behind Arlington Park – David Haugh (DIERSEN: How much longer do your critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes predict that you will live? My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always treated me like they predicted that I would die long before I might retaliate against them. They base that on my father having type 1 diabetes from age 14 and his sudden death caused by heart failure in 1969 when he was 47 and I was 21.  More recently, they base their predictions on my being 68 years old, my having type 2 diabetes, my being overweight, and my not getting enough exercise. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes do everything that they can to cause me stress and to make me angry.)

DAILY HERALD
— Expansion could house more low-income seniors in Naperville – Marie Wilson  (DIERSEN: Are you a low-income senior?  According to my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes, I would be a low-income senior if I a) had NOT been born with a silver spoon in my mouth, b) had NOT been always privileged, c) had NOT been born a healthy White male, d) had NOT avoided the draft, e) had NOT been an overpaid federal employee, f) had NOT gotten married, g) had NOT given up trying to have children, h) had adopted, i) had become a foster parent, and/or j) had given as much money to churches and to charities as they do.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— These two are the only local CEOs paid $20 million-plus last year – JOE CAHILL  (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those who rail against the compensation that government employees and government retirees get, but say nothing about the outrageous compensation that private sector employees get.  Ever-increasingly, those who rail against the compensation that government employees and government retirees get sound like they are being paid lots of money by private sector CEOs to do that.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20170505/ISSUE10/170509888
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In general, CEOs at public companies around Chicago got smaller raises than counterparts elsewhere last year. A median pay hike of 3.6 percent trailed the 5.5 percent increase for CEOs at companies in the Russell 3000 Index. But don’t feel sorry for our CEOs—their 2016 median pay of $5.4 million was well above the $4.1 million median for the Russell 3000. Higher median pay reflects Chicago’s significant concentration of large companies with multiple business lines and worldwide operations, says John Roe, head of ISS Analytics. “There are some very large, very complex corporations there,” Roe says. “That tends to result in higher pay packages.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rep. Peter Roskam of Illinois (Clinton: 50 percent, Roskam: 60 percent in 2016)  On Thursday morning, Democrat Kelly Mazeski, a breast cancer survivor, entered the contest — one of a slew of candidates with pre-existing conditions or personal experience with the travails of the health care system whom Democrats expect to see run this cycle. Roskam comes from an increasingly diverse district in the western suburbs of Chicago that has trended Democratic at the presidential level. He faced tough races in the past, though redistricting shifted his district into more safely Republican territory six years ago. “It’s time the people of Illinois’ 6th District hold Peter Roskam accountable for voting to make Americans pay more and get less for their health care,” Mazeski said in announcing her bid.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Summer is nearing, and workplaces everywhere are awaiting the arrival of this year’s interns to help out on extra projects and shoulder the seasonal load. But among certain companies, they’re likely doing more than getting coffee and making copies. Or at least, they’re being paid that way. According to a new report by the jobs site Glassdoor, the 25 best-paying companies for internships each pay their median summer worker more than $4,500 a month. That amount, if it was paid over the course of a full year, would be north of $54,000, exceeding the median annual pay for a U.S. worker, according to Glassdoor’s own local pay reports ($51,350), and the annual figure calculated from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest weekly earnings data for full-time wage and salary workers ($44,460). Topping the list was Facebook, where the median pay for interns is $8,000 a month, according to the reports from the newest analysis. That’s $1,800 more than the $6,200 the social media giant reportedly paid interns when Glassdoor last issued its last highest paying internship report, in 2014. The next three were Microsoft (which pays a median $7,100 a month), ExxonMobil ($6,507) and Salesforce ($6,450).)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Before legalizing pot in Illinois, learn from other states – Editorial  (DIERSEN: To promote pot in Illinois is to promote the destruction of Illinois.)
http://chicago.suntimes.com/opinion/before-legalizing-pot-in-illinois-learn-from-other-states/
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Sometimes, when a big new issue presents itself, such as a deadly disease epidemic, lawmakers must respond on the fly. They craft laws without knowing the full facts, taking a gamble on the unintended consequences. When it comes to legalizing recreational marijuana in Illinois, precisely the opposite is true. There is no compelling reason to rush a decision, and plenty of reasons not to. To be precise, there are nine excellent reasons not to — eight states plus the District of Columbia, where recreational pot already has been legalized. They offer Illinois a terrific opportunity to sit back, watch and learn. The benefits and dangers of legal pot will become more clear fairly quickly, at which time Illinois can proceed accordingly. In Illinois, two state legislators are proposing to legalize recreational marijuana for people 21 or older. Users would be limited to possessing about an ounce or less and could not drive under the influence of the drug. Lighting up in public would be banned. That sounds reasonable enough, and we certainly understand the attraction of more taxable revenue for our financially troubled state. But skeptics continue to warn of the dangers, such as the potential physiological effects and the questionable message sent to young people about the casual use of drugs. Far better, then, to take a breath. Let’s see how recreational marijuana plays out in, say, Colorado or California. We might also learn a few things from Canada, which is expected to legalize recreational pot soon. If access to recreational pot were a fundamental matter of civil rights, Illinois would be wrong to delay legalization any further. But it is not. The urgency does not rise to the level of, say, legalizing same-sex marriage or eliminating unconstitutional barriers to voting. Canada already has identified some concerns about recreational marijuana that Illinois would have to address. Testing equipment similar to breathalyzers must be developed for marijuana, to guard against increase in impaired drivers. The testing equipment also would have to be made available to many workplaces, such as factories, to safeguard against workplace accidents. Concerns remain whether young people would have easier access to a drug that some scientists warn inhibits brain development. Taking a wait-and-see approach also will allow lawmakers to see how the Trump administration’s plans to enforce federal laws against marijuana play out. The Obama administration’s policy was to avoid interfering with state legalization of non-medical marijuana use. States can’t count on that anymore. Conflicts between federal and state could create huge legal headaches. The strongest argument for legalizing recreational pot in Illinois right now is money. Last year, the state of Colorado pocketed nearly $200 million in tax revenue from recreational marijuana. State Sen. Heather Steans and state Rep. Kelly Cassidy, Chicago Democrats, who are pushing legalization in the General Assembly, expect Illinois would pull in between $350 million and $700 million a year. In one fell swoop, our state’s finances would be in much better shape. But then there is this, again giving us pause: The National Institute on Drug Abuse says marijuana impairs judgment, reaction time and motor coordination. If more motorists use marijuana, more people could die on our highways. A legitimate worry? Or anti-pot alarmism? We don’t know and don’t have to guess. The answer to that question — and many others — will be coming soon enough from those eight other states, the District of Columbia and Canada. Each is a laboratory studying the social and medical impact of recreational pot.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-illinois-college-endowments-down-0430-biz-20170428-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Wheaton College this year plans to spend about $17.9 million of its endowment, a 4.6 percent spending rate, up from $17.2 million last year. Endowment spending covers 14 percent of the Christian liberal arts school’s annual budget and helps pay for scholarships, faculty positions — including research — as well as academic programs, facility maintenance and general operations. Financial aid and scholarships represent the biggest piece of Wheaton’s endowment spending, about 38 percent. That amount, $6.8 million, has been growing in both dollars and percentage of endowment spending. The latest round will provide scholarships for about 800 students out of a total student body of 2,650 students. But like Northwestern, Wheaton saw its endowment shrink last year, dropping 5.3 percent, to $388 million. Nevertheless, Wheaton still boosted its financial aid from all sources, including the endowment, by 3.7 percent in 2017 and plans to spend even more next year, investment manager Kenneth Larson said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Patronage hiring, like that on display in the IDOT episode, is illegal as a consequence of a 1990 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Rutan v. Republican Party of Illinois. As a consequence of that decision, the high court banned the practice with the exception of a handful of top policy positions in the upper reaches of the executive departments. Those appointed top management positions are called “Rutan-exempt” while lower-level jobs are labeled “Rutan-covered.” To get around the law, top Quinn officials created Rutan-exempt “staff assistant” positions who did “Rutan-covered” work and filled them with clouted job-seekers. Later, Quinn’s people would transfer the staff assistants into legitimate Rutan-covered positions after conducting phony jobs searches. In favoring those with clout, state officials squandered state dollars on unqualified individuals. IDOT also put others seeking state employment at an impossible disadvantage.)

— Can you actually become a millionaire on an average salary? – Christy Bieber
http://money.cnn.com/2017/04/28/pf/millionaire-average-salary/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Becoming a millionaire has long been part of the American dream, but saving $1 million is not just an idle fantasy for most Americans. Saving at least $1 million is a dream many feel must come true if they’re going to have a comfortable retirement. In fact, of the Americans who have attempted to figure out how much they must save for retirement, 37% believe they need at least $1 million, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Saving enough for retirement is a significant source of stress, and it’s natural to worry about reaching a savings goal of $1 million. Banking this much money may seem impossible on an average person’s salary, but could it actually be realistic? Can the average person, without a big inheritance or a lucky lotto win, become a millionaire? Can you actually become a millionaire on an average salary? There are a lot of factors that determine whether you can save $1 million or not, including how much you can invest and how fast those investments grow. The biggest factor, however, is your age when you start saving.)

This year, will Republican candidates, Republican elected officials, and Republican organizations surrender to the anti-Trumps and a) NOT have entries in the parade and b) NOT contribute toward sponsoring entries in the parade?  I am going to raise $2,500 from Republicans to sponsor the Wheaton high school bands and the bagpipers in the parade even if all of the $2,500 has to come from me.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Portland’s 82nd Avenue of Roses Parade this weekend was supposed to be a community-building event, showcasing local businesses and offering a positive spin on the area’s sometimes negative perception, the Oregonian reported. But there was a problem: The Multnomah County Republican Party was one of this year’s parade participants. At least it was a problem for an “antifa/anarchist” who sent an anonymous email to parade organizers Saturday, the Portland Mercury reported. According to the Mercury, the email sender threatened that if GOP members are allowed to participate in the parade, “we will have two hundred or more people rush into the parade into the middle and drag and push those people out as we will not give one inch to groups who espouse hatred toward LGBT, immigrants, people of color or others. In case the message was not clear to you this is a sanctuary city and state, and we will not allow these people to spread their views in East Portland.” The email, the Oregonian added, also promised: “You have seen how much power we have downtown and that the police cannot stop us from shutting down roads, so please consider your decision wisely. … This is non-negotiable.” As you’re likely getting used to hearing these days, parade organizers canceled the event Tuesday, fearing it could end in “the type of riots which happen in downtown Portland,” the Oregonian added. Parade officials had contacted police about the situation, but Rich Jarvis, a spokesman for the Rose Festival Foundation, told the Oregonian that police couldn’t provide additional security. So it was bye-bye parade. “The showdown was imminent,” Jarvis told the Oregonian. “They were boxed into a corner, they simply had no choice. In order to avoid a violent outbreak, they had to cancel the parade.” Direct Action Alliance — a group “organized in response to the rise of fascism in America,” KGW-TV reported — was planning to speak out against fascism and white supremacy during the parade, the Oregonian said. But the group’s leader Jacob Bureros told KGW his group wasn’t responsible for the anonymous letter. “Direct Action Alliance and those affiliated with this group did not publish, produce or distribute the letter in question,” Bureros told the station in a statement. “We are members of this community, and like the Republican Party, our members have participated in past parades without incident. “We are disappointed that the parade was canceled,” he told the Oregonian, “… this is an awesome parade.” James Buchal, chairman of the Multnomah County Republican Party, told the Oregonian his group didn’t take part in the decision to cancel this Saturday’s parade — in fact, the news surprised him. He told KGW that the election of Republican President Donald Trump has caused a “significant portion of the population to become unhinged.” Buchal also had a message for those who believe GOP members are a bunch of racists and Nazis, the station reported. “I would say wake up, get in the real world,” he said. “We’re a political party. Are you really so stupid that you think we’re going to attract new members by marching with a bunch of Nazis carrying swastikas? What are you, nuts? Get in the real world.” Buchal told the Oregonian that he saw the anonymous, threatening email and that the GOP members still had no plans to back out. “We weren’t willing to just walk away quietly,” he said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Growing up isn’t what it used to be. There’s a yawning gap between the end of adolescence and the beginning of adulthood: a period when millions of 20-somethings and 30-somethings have many adult freedoms without all the responsibilities. Social scientists have tried — so far in vain — to name this new life-stage, but no one should question its significance. If you have doubts, a new U.S. Census Bureau study should resolve them. It compares the experiences of Americans 18 to 34 now with the same age group in the 1970s. There has been a sea change. “In prior generations, young adults were expected to have finished school, found a job, and set up their own household during their 20s — most often with their spouse and with a child soon to follow,” says the report. No more. . .The transition has been hard on some men. In 1975, only about a quarter of men 25 to 34 had incomes less than $30,000 a year. By 2016, that had risen to 41 percent. (Incomes were adjusted for inflation.) Meanwhile, millions of young women have entered the labor force, and though their median wage remains below men’s, it has increased faster than men’s.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
