I challenge the Daily Herald to publish stories about those like me who have been forced to pay the price of AA by Democrats and by RINOs. I challenge the Daily Herald to publish my story. In 1971, when I was 22 years old, Oldsmobile withdrew a job offer that I had accepted saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. Sadly, if not tragically for me, that directly resulted in my accepting a job offer from IRS. Especially after 1974, my Democrat IRS superiors used AA to promote over me my coworkers who were minority, female, and/or veteran and a) who had less job-related work experience than I had, b) who had less job-related education than I had, and/or c) who had not taken the CPA examination, let alone passed it. I earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976 and I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979. In 1980, because I was not a Democrat, minority, female, veteran. and/or younger, GAO forced me to suffer a $21,863/year (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO. My Democrat GAO superiors gave me unfair job assignments, performance expectations, and performance appraisals. They assigned me to supervised all their most problematic employees. The kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO. They delayed my promotions and never promoted me beyond GS-13. They used AA to promote over me my coworkers who were minority, female, and/or veteran and a) who had less job-related work experience than I had, b) who had less job-related education than I had, and/or c) who had not taken the CPA or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) examinations, let alone passed them. I earned a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, I passed the CIA examination on my first attempt in 1981, I became a licensed CPA in 1981, I became a Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, Government Financial Manager in 1994, Financial Services Auditor in 1996, and Forensic Accountant in 1997, and I earned a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997. They always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes. They forced me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 and gave my job and my preferred corner office to my Black subordinate. The Milton Township Republican Organization, DuPage County Republican Central Committee, Illinois Republican Party, Wheaton, Wheaton Park District, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce, Milton Township, DuPage County, Illinois, TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois, Illinois Center Right Coalition, American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter, etc. have all taken many big adverse actions against me that they would never had taken against me if I was a minority, female, veteran, and/or younger.

To delay my promotions, that is, to get me, Dave used Affirmative Action and up-or-out a) to give me bad job assignments, b) to give me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, c) to assign me to supervise the office’s most problematic employees, d) to turn all my superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates against me, and e) to kept me off audits of IRS. But then, in 1986, because Dave had gone on extended sick leave, Bill was finally able to get me assigned to audits of IRS and to promote me to GS-13. But then, in 1987, Dave came back and a) threatened me to never apply for a promotion again and forced Bill to retire. Dave then a) threw me off audits of IRS at the end of 1988, b) gave me an extremely bad job assignment at the start of 1989, c) got my supervisor to give me extremely unfair performance expectations and appraisals, d) turned my four subordinates against me, and e) ranked me at the bottom of my coworkers for pay-for-performance (PFP) purposes. That forced me to seek help from my Republican Congressman Henry Hyde. Thanks to Hyde, Dave reduced his efforts to get rid of me somewhat. (FROM THE ARTICLE: In 1992, Bill Clinton did something no presidential candidate had accomplished since FDR: He won the White House without ever serving in the military. Before Clinton, from Truman to George H.W. Bush, every U.S. president was also a U.S. veteran. Since Clinton, only one candidate with military experience has been elected president: Lt. George W. Bush of the Texas Air National Guard. Not only have none of the past three presidents — Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden — served in the military, but both Biden and Trump used dubious health claims in 1968 to avoid being drafted during the Vietnam War. It could be argued that over the past 30 years, more draft dodgers have served in the Oval Office than war veterans. And that is not likely to change. Only one of the dozen or so announced, and likely candidates for president in either party have ever worn their nation’s uniform. Gov. Ron DeSantis was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy and assigned to the Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG) while still a student a Harvard Law School. He was deployed to Iraq in 2007 and received a Bronze Star for his service. None of the other announced GOP candidates — Trump, former Gov. Asa Hutchinson, former Ambassador Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, or Sen. Tim Scott — is a veteran. DeSantis’ military service stands out even if the list is expanded to include potential candidates like Vice President Mike Pence and Govs. Doug Borgum, Chris Christie, Chris Sununu, Glenn Youngkin, or even fringe candidates like radio talk host Larry Elder and Michigan businessman Perry Johnson. No military service. The same is true on the Democratic side, too. Biden’s “asthma” protected him from being drafted, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. turned 19 just as the Vietnam-era draft ended. Marianne Williamson also did not serve in the military. And while they have not given any (public) indication they are contemplating a 2024 race, nobody on the Democratic bench — Vice President Kamala Harris, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, or Californians Rep. Ro Khanna and Gov. Gavin Newsom — has served, either. Is this a political opportunity for former Navy Lt. Commander DeSantis? Or does military service no longer matter to American voters? “Sadly, I don’t think it matters anymore, and that’s a shame in my view,” said Dr. Wayne Lesperance, political science professor and president of New England College. “There was a time when service was an absolute must.” One reason for the change, Lesperance suggested, is the decline in the importance of foreign policy for Republican voters. “For the GOP in particular, the foreign policy litmus tests are few and far between. They are mainly defined by focusing on the narrative that America’s traditional allies are cheating us and not paying their share. Military service just hasn’t been a sought-after virtue for Republican voters since [U.S. Sen. John] McCain’s candidacy,” Lesperance said. Veteran Democratic campaign strategist Bob Shrum said the McCain example is part of an even more disturbing trend. “Not only are voters OK with electing people who haven’t served in the military, but look at the records of those who have: John Kerry, John McCain, even go back to Bob Dole. They served abroad, but they didn’t win the White House here at home. The record is clear: military service is just not very important to the voters,” Shrum said. That is a break with most of American political history. All but four of the first 25 U.S. presidents had military experience, and two of the exceptions were John Adams — who desperately wanted to serve in the military but was trapped by politics; and his son John Quincy, who spent much of his early life in the foreign service. In all, 31 of the 45 men who served as president were also military veterans. The lack of military service among Democratic candidates is not as surprising as it is for the GOP. The last Democrat with military experience to win the White House was Jimmy Carter in 1976. But what happened to the Republican bench? It could be a coincidence, or it could be that the new populist tone of the party under the influence of Trump has shifted its stance on foreign policy. Candidates who might support a more aggressive U.S. foreign policy abroad (like West Point grad and Army veteran Mike Pompeo) are choosing not to run. Does DeSantis’ service give him a political edge on the rest of the field? New Hampshire GOP communications expert Alicia Xanthopolous said it does. “I think he should use it as an asset. Forget the foreign policy part and focus on his ability to understand what it means to serve, troop sentiment, and the realities of the impact of political decisions on the military,” Xanthopolous said. It should also be a plus in New Hampshire, home to about 91,000 vets and one of the nation’s largest per-capita veteran populations. (FROM THE ARTICLE: The broader context of the mid-20th-century debate over educational privilege was student deferments from the military draft. It’s a useful analogy for today’s debate, and it illustrates how higher-education interests succeeded decades ago in creating a privileged place above the ordinary duties of American civic life. The U.S. instituted the draft in 1940, more than a year before Congress declared war on Japan and Germany. FDR, who came out for the draft at the 1940 Democratic National Convention, championed universal military service by able-bodied males as an expression of national unity and democratic solidarity. On the day of the first draft lottery, Roosevelt read, with great fanfare, from letters written by Catholic, Jewish and Protestant leaders in support of conscription. Roosevelt was keen that the public needed assurance that the draft was “absolutely democratic and made no distinction between men of different social ranks or economic status,” as the New York Times editorialized in praising William McChesney Martin, president of the New York Stock Exchange (and later Federal Reserve chairman), for enlisting as an Army private. Already educators were pressing for special treatment for students, which concerned FDR. Writing to the director of the Selective Service, the president was clear that he didn’t want “the mere matriculation into college” to “serve as a means of evading compulsory military training.” The pressure from educators during World War II was largely ineffectual. The need for manpower drove Congress in 1942 to lower the draft age to 18 from 21. From 1942 to 1943, enrollment in college and professional school plunged by nearly 40% as many college-age men answered the call of service. By 1944 the Selective Service was granting only around 10,000 student deferments a year for undergraduates—compared with 1.6 million deferments for male farm workers and 264,000 for men with dependents. But after World War II, educators began to gain the upper hand. For educational and industry leaders of the era, defending the country from nuclear attack required turning away from the democratic values of shared sacrifice in uniform. The stated intention of the educators who pushed for a broader student deferment program was to protect the future of the hard sciences. Still, some worried that the efforts to shield a special class of students would easily spread to other academic pursuits. Conant wrote Eisenhower in 1948 that he was against “the whole business” of student deferments and worried that college campuses would become havens for draft dodgers. Ike was sympathetic to that view. Like FDR, he believed that universal military service was the “only democratic way” to defend the country. As president, he directed the Selective Service to tighten graduate-school deferments in the face of opposition from elite scientists. Student deferments exploded during the 1960s. In part this was a function of demographics. With the arrival of baby boomers, college enrollment skyrocketed. But student deferments for otherwise draft-eligible college men grew at a faster rate than college matriculation. Between 1959 and 1969, the number of men in college doubled, from 2.3 million to 4.7 million. The number of draft deferments increased more than 12-fold, from 179,000 to 2.26 million during the same period. Much of the expansion in student deferments was driven by a change in values on the part of students, faculty and administrators. After FDR announced the draft, the National Association of State Universities registered its “unalterable opposition” to blanket student deferments, while hundreds of private institutions, including Harvard and Columbia, created three-year curricula to facilitate military service. By the Vietnam era, the tide had turned. Signs reading “draft beer, not students” appeared at antiwar protests. University presidents often joined students in opposing the war and the draft. FDR had formed a political coalition uniting scientific and educational elites with the working class. Student deferments helped shatter it. “When Walter Reuther”—president of the United Automobile Workers—“realizes his people are doing the dying, while the auto executive sons keep getting school deferments, there could be hell to pay,” a perspicacious labor official wrote to President Lyndon B. Johnson. Sen. Ted Kennedy and Sargent Shriver, George McGovern’s future running mate, both called in 1967 for an end to student deferments. In a nod to the charges of class bias, Johnson ended graduate-school deferments in February 1968, the month before he withdrew his candidacy for renomination. Republicans won five of the next six presidential elections. Conscription ended in 1973, and with it the debate on student deferments. But the political divide over whether universities and their students are entitled to special privileges remains stark—although it sometimes cuts across conventional liberal-conservative lines.)
