(FROM THE ARTICLE: A West Chicago District 33 teacher whose pro-immigration agent comment on social media was criticized by many people has resigned. On Thursday, the school board accepted the resignation and a separation agreement of the Gary Elementary School teacher. “This situation was never about politics. It has been about our responsibility to keep schools operating normally and to minimize disruption to learning,” board President Rita Balgeman said after the vote. The board did not discuss the terms of the settlement. As part of the separation agreement, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, the teacher will be paid his salary and health benefits through the end of the school year. It also states that the district will give a neutral reference about him to future employers. According to West Chicago Mayor Dan Bovey, the teacher commented, “go ICE!” in a social media post. Bovey, whose wife works at the school, said he spoke with the man when the controversy erupted. After the district learned of the comment Jan. 22, the teacher initially resigned that day but retracted it later that day. The district put him on leave while it investigated the matter. More than 81% of the district’s students are of Hispanic descent, according to its 2025 state school report card. Bovey said West Chicago schoolchildren have been traumatized because their parents were taken by immigration enforcement agents, and that the comment was hurtful and offensive. After the board voted, members of the public spoke about the matter. “We want our students to feel respected and valued, which is why we request that the seriousness of the comment be recognized,” one mother of a student said, speaking in Spanish. But another woman, Corinne Ingrum, urged the community to “pick your battles more wisely,” saying the action against the teacher will not resolve the community’s concerns with immigration agents’ actions. “You could have chosen to rally around one of your own beloved teachers, but instead you chose to bring more unwanted ICE attention to West Chicago,” Ingrum said. She suggested that people bring their concerns to elected officials. Timothy Lorman asked the school board whether it is a prerequisite of employment “to agree with the majority or the popular opinion of the day.” Another man urged the board to look at anti-ICE statements made by teachers and consider whether they were inappropriate.)

Members of the group said in a news release that they’ll build altars to honor Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who were killed in January in Minneapolis, as well as Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, who was fatally shot in September by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Franklin Park. The altars will be built from 1 to 4 p.m. at Casa DuPage, 311 S. Naperville Road in Wheaton, and then taken on the back of a pickup truck to the site in Franklin Park where Villegas-Gonzalez was killed near 25th and Grand avenues. The roughly 2-mile march along frequently snow-covered sidewalks took the students from the school to Chicago Street, where they headed west to Willard Avenue, then south to Villa Street and back to the school. The protest follows a similar event at Elgin Area School District U-46’s Streamwood High School. Walkouts are also planned in the coming days at Larkin and South Elgin high schools. Freshman Jamison Vaskin said he took part because “what is happening in America is 100% not OK.” “I’m out here because of the dehumanization that’s happening in our country,” he said. “The attack on our Constitution and our rights, the constant abuse that ICE is inflicting on our citizens, the murder of American citizens. It is heinous.” Matthew Napoles donned a sombrero and carried a portable speaker while leading his classmates in songs and chants. A statement from the school district said the walkout was “initiated by a group of students who wished to express their views about an issue that is important to them.” The district sent a communication to parents on Tuesday to make them aware of the walkout and encouraged families to have conversations about “respectful expression, civic engagement, and making responsible choices while at school.” A spokesperson for the district said students who participated in the walkout were marked absent for missed instructional time, in accordance with district policy. Michigan Ave. Both politicians, she said, made clear that “dignity is not conditional” in the state. She added, “And yes—abolish ICE,” to loud applause. “Hands off our families. Hands off our cities. Hands off our state. Hands off our community.” Parker, a longtime LGBTQ+-rights advocate who’d been active in several Chicago organizations, was tapped as Equality Illinois’s interim CEO in June, then named to the position permanently in August. She is the organization’s first transgender Black leader. She emphasized throughout her speech the need to work as a collective in order to safeguard the rights of LGBTQ+ Illinoisans and other individuals living at the margins, even as right-wing elements continue to flex their political power: “This work is strictly by coalition [and] personal acts.” Parker added, “I promise my work continues. … Conspiracy is being used as a strategy. Chaos is being sold as inevitable.” She promised that her organization is up for the challenge, however. “That is the reality that Equality Illinois is built to face,” Parker said, warning that giving in to outrage will surely lead to disillusionment in the the long run. “Our job is not to chase every headline, or over-react ourselves into exhaustion. Our job is to make sure nothing essential collapses.” Parker’s speech followed a stern warning from Pritzker, who said the nation’s foundation principles are under attack from the federal government. “We’ve seen it before in the early ‘30s, and now we’re seeing it in our American cities,” he said, suggesting that Chicago was a “test case” for ICE. “We’re seeing it all over again in Minneapolis.” Pritzker nevertheless called the Equality Illinois gala one of his favorite events each year, adding, “I have so much respect for the work that you do.” He further paid tribute to the work of activist Rick Garcia, who passed away in January. “Rick has left an indelible mark on this state,” Pritzker said. In about 376 Common Era, when The Roman Empire was divided into the Western and Eastern Empires, Goths (Germans) were trying to cross the river on the northern border of the Roman Empire. Huns were chasing and slaughtering the Goths. They wanted Roman protection. Valens, the Roman Emperor, didn’t want to let the Goths in, but he finally made a bargain with the leader of the Goths. The deal was in return for admission into the empire, the Goths would provide soldiers for the Roman army, which was fighting a war in the East of the Empire. The Romans would provide welfare to the Goths. After about 40 years, the Goths wanted to keep their own culture and stopped providing soldiers. The Romans cut off welfare. The Visigoths, one the Goth tribes, sacked Rome in 410 Common Era. This act effectively destroyed the Western Roman Empire. Quoting Milton Friedman in 1776: “A country can have open borders with no welfare. A country can have closed borders with welfare. If a country has open borders and welfare the country will disappear.” This history is a good lesson for our time. I got this information from “The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire,” written by Edward Gibbon in 1776.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Student petition signed by 1,200 calls ICE ‘fascist organization’ George Washington University Law School refused to disinvite U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from its career fair Friday after over 1,200 students and organizations signed a petition to have the federal agency removed. The petition called on GW Law and the Georgetown University Law Center to remove ICE and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from “all current components and future renditions” of the law schools’ joint event. “ICE is a fascist organization, tasked with carrying out ethnic cleansing, family separation, and extreme brutality and violence,” the petition states. It also states that “The government created ICE only 23 years ago to violently remove people from the United States, violating the human rights of immigrant communities and obfuscating the fact that the United States is a country stolen from Indigenous communities and built by enslaving Black people.” The students added that “Working for DHS or ICE is antithetical to what it means to be a lawyer serving the public interest.” Further, they stated that other law schools, such as New York University and American University’s Washington College of Law, have blocked “recruitment efforts” by DHS and ICE. “We remain adamant that regardless of immigration status, ICE’s actions grossly violate human rights, and we stand with immigrant communities everywhere in the fight against state violence,” the petition states. Dean Dayna Matthew met with the students who spearheaded the petition to discuss their concerns, and later sent an email stating the GW Law administrators decided not to rescind ICE’s invitation, The GW Hatchet reported. The dean cited free expression and university policy. The university is “committed to principles that protect all students’ right to ideological expression,” she stated. Matthew added that recruitment programs must remain open to all employers, even if some view their actions as objectionable. “In my view, providing PSRP access to an employer does not signal endorsement or support of that employer’s work or values,” Matthew stated. “My decision does support and endorse GW Law students’ right to express opposition to an employer consistent with the university’s freedom of expression policy,” she stated. After administrators declined to remove ICE, at least 20 employers pulled out of the career fair. However, the petition did have some impact. ICE’s Office of the Principal Legal Advisor withdrew from the event while the agency’s Human Rights Violators and War Crimes Center remained involved. Still, students were disappointed. “To bring an organization whose sole mission is to divide people, make people feel unwelcome, remove people from spaces and create a sense of unsafety and unrest into that space — a space that so many people in this community have worked so hard to curate — was very insulting to the people who have tried to make this such a welcoming place,” said student Anapaula Pérez-Gaitan, who is the program manager at the school’s public interest center. FASORP first sued the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law in July 2024, alleging it refused to consider hiring white male faculty candidates with “stellar credentials” while hiring other “mediocre” candidates from diverse racial and gender backgrounds. Ellis did not explain her reasons for dismissing the case. Northwestern had argued that FASORP did not have grounds to sue because the members it says were passed over for faculty jobs lacked the necessary credentials and had not actually applied. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of three unnamed FASORP members who alleged they are ready and willing to apply for faculty posts at Northwestern’s law school but cannot compete because they are white men.
