If you asked me to pick who’ll win today … I couldn’t.” . . . On the Republican side, Rauner reported a formidable $55.6 million cash in hand at the end of 2017. In 2016, the governor donated $57 million to his campaign, and over the course of his political career, he’s given himself $95 million, state records show. That’s a stark contrast to Ives, who banked $404,000 cash in hand in the last quarter of 2017. But she surged in 2018, raising more than $3.3 million, mainly because of a $2.5 million windfall from Dick Uihlein of Lake Forest, founder of Uline shipping supplies and a one-time Rauner donor. “I never expected Ives to spend the kind of money she’s spending,” Durante said. Other significant Ives contributors include Chicagoan Vincent Kolber, president of rail equipment firm Residco and a former Rauner donor, with over $500,000; Hinsdale IT entrepreneur William Merchantz with $75,000; and the Illinois Opportunity Project, whose co-founders include conservative talk show host Dan Proft. Rauner has garnered more than $440,000 in 2018. His biggest donors include previous supporter and Chicago executive William Kunkler of C.C. Industries with $100,000 and the Illinois Republican Party with $191,000. Rauner has donated about $200,000 to the state GOP since 2010. Durante wouldn’t predict who’ll win, but he senses an enthusiasm gap. “I would think the hard-core base will go for Jeanne,” he said. “I think Rauner needs to get to those moderate Republicans. … It might be tougher for him than he imagines.” . . . For starters, Rauner wasn’t supposed to have an opponent, but the state’s entrenched financial crisis and political gridlock provoked rumblings of unrest from the rank and file. Despite the government dysfunction, the Winnetka investment banker is endorsed by mainstream Cook and DuPage Republicans. Ives, of Wheaton, has picked up a slew of local endorsements such as the Wheatland Township Republican Organization, Republican Organization of Wheeling Township and Batavia Township Republican Organization. She launched her bid after Rauner supported Medicaid funding for abortions. The conservative West Point grad has used social issues to whip up support among the GOP base, although the strategy has backfired with moderates. Last week, Ives launched an ad blitz calling Rauner a “fake” Republican, while he’s retaliated with commercials linking her with beleaguered Speaker Michael Madigan, a Democrat.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: There are a number of issues that the state is facing in regard to retaining teachers and substitute teachers in school districts, such as reducing $250 to $300 it costs for a substitute license, reduce the requirements for out-of-state teachers, and increasing the rate of pay for subs. “The biggest thing is the rate of pay for substitute teachers,” said IARSS Association President Mark Jontry. “With the exacerbated shift in the economy, there is a reduced number of applicants because we have a stronger economy. People are now looking for job opportunities outside the state.” To compete with other counties of the state, Klosterman’s district had to increase the pay of its substitute teachers to $90 a day. “It was necessary to be competitive and expand the candidate pool for us to make sure that we did everything we could to fill positions as much as possible,” he said. Other methods Klosterman’s district implemented were using social media to advertise and speaking with employees, parents, friends, relatives, etc., asking if they know anyone who would like to be a substitute.)

Rauner lied to Cardinal Cupich and his constituents when he said he would not sign the bill authorizing Medicare funding of abortions. He also approved the bill making Illinois a sanctuary state. Rauner owns the 32 percent income tax increase, because he failed to do his job as a leader to keep the Republican leaders unified to the values of the constituents that put them in office. These are not Republican values. It is Gov. Rauner that has divided the Republican Party. Jeanne Ives has the knowledge, legislative experience, and drive to lead this great state from the brink of financial disaster. At the same time, however, the Wheaton legislator has embraced Trump and urges what she calls the “silent majority” that elected him to rise up against Rauner. Trump’s lies in office are well chronicled — just Wednesday, he boasted that he made up facts on trade during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trump also has a history of cheating, including his affair with actress Marla Maples that broke up his first marriage, and the current fallout from $130,000 paid by his lawyer to a porn star who goes by the name Stormy Daniels as “hush money” about an alleged affair. How does Ives reconcile campaigning on an honor code that prohibits lying and cheating as a rationale to take on Rauner, while not only tolerating but actively promoting Trump? Asked that question recently, Ives paused for several seconds. “For me, it’s a personal affront to what Gov. Rauner has done because I’m part of that Republican caucus he lied to, OK?” she said. “So, it’s a very personal thing. That’s the thing. I can affect him (Rauner) and the outcome of this election. I can’t necessarily affect Donald Trump.” . . . “These two primary races at the governor’s level are pretty good examples of this issue of differentiation. Jeanne Ives has been very clear and very pointed about differentiating herself from Rauner in very specific ways,” he said. “Whereas the Democrats have to say, ‘Well, I’ve got this slightly different take on (things).’ Nuances are a problem.” With Ives, there’s not much nuance to her support for the president. “I think we should have a working relationship with (Trump),” she said after a recent gathering of the Streeterville Organization of Active Residents at Water Tower Place. “And look, I’ve been disappointed by a lot of other politicians who have lied about what their intentions are, have done the wrong thing. But you still work with them. You still work with them,” she said. “But in the case of Rauner, I can actually affect change where he has personally lied about his policies.” Ives has supported Trump attacks on sanctuary cities and illegal immigration while criticizing Rauner’s approval of legislation that would prevent local law enforcement from holding someone based solely on their legal status or detaining someone without a judicially issued warrant. Ives’ challenge means Rauner’s attempts to distance himself from Trump have become a factor for the governor ahead of the primary, Mooney said. “Rauner’s spent his time ignoring (Trump), (the president) is sort of a pariah in the state, and that’s annoyed the Trump supporters in the state, and then Jeanne Ives comes along,” Mooney said. “If she wouldn’t have been there, raising (Rauner’s) ambiguity about Trump and all of that, in the fall, the Democrat, whoever it would be, would definitely hammer him on Trump, associate him with Trump,” he added. “But without Ives putting out these sort of RINO (Republican In Name Only) criticisms and so forth, those (Trump) people might have just gone ahead and would vote for (Rauner).” Trump presents a problem for a Republican governor running in a Democratic-leaning state. For nearly two years, Rauner routinely has avoided using the president’s name in public, and he skipped the 2016 GOP convention that nominated Trump. Asked by reporters about Trump-proposed policies on immigration, health care and other issues and Rauner regularly demurs — at one point saying he had “no obligation” to discuss “every policy change in Washington.” Instead, Rauner has focused his primary campaign on his frequent political target, veteran Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, going so far as to try to link Madigan to Ives despite vast ideological differences between the Democratic leader and the GOP challenger. The assertion rated a “Pants on Fire” from PolitiFact Illinois. The election, Rauner told reporters, is “about the people against a corrupt, broken system. It’s about the people of Illinois demanding more value for their taxes and a lower tax burden, the people of Illinois demanding more jobs, more economic opportunity and the people of Illinois demanding an end to the corruption in our system by getting term limits.” The governor said his campaign message is one of “unification” that transcends party labels. But Rauner has had difficulty finding a base. His approval of legislation expanding taxpayer-funded abortions to women covered by Medicaid and state employee health insurance motivated Ives to challenge him. GOP conservatives viewed Rauner’s move as a betrayal after he had vowed to veto the bill. On the other hand, Rauner’s support of the measure could help him if he makes it to the November general election, winning favor with GOP-leaning moderate suburban women, a critical demographic in an evolving collar county landscape. Rauner followed that up, however, with his Tuesday veto of legislation that would have required the state licensing of gun shops. That’s legislation those same suburban women, many of them mothers of school-age children, would support. Before then, however, Rauner has to win the primary election, and he knows the voting power of Downstate gun-rights supporters. David Yepsen, the former head of the Paul Simon Public Policy Center at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, said the Trump impact in the primaries may only be just the beginning heading toward the outcomes of the November general election. “There is a Trump effect, and it can be a harmful one to Republican chances in Illinois in November. There is a Democrat wave starting to form, and it manifests itself in the energy you see in these groups, the turnouts in primaries in other states,” said Yepsen, a former national columnist for The Des Moines Register. “It’s history. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Through the House Republican Organization (HRO), the Republican machine in Springfield is dumping hundreds of thousands of dollars into primary campaigns of their handpicked candidates. One of HRO’s toughest, more expensive campaigns is in the 53rd District against Mt. Prospect’s Katie Miller. The HRO’s candidate there is 29-year-old Eddie Corrigan. HRO has given over $150,000 to his campaign just since late February, according to Illinois State Board of Elections records. Corrigan lives with his father in Arlington Heights and has a colorful party history on full display on Facebook. The 39-year-old Miller is a registered nurse and married mother of three who pays nearly $10,000 a year in property taxes. In TV commercials and mailers, Corrigan’s HRO-funded campaign — just as with other HRO smears targeting those running against their handpicked candidates — is saying that Miller is a Democrat at heart and has ties to Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan. Miller, a self-described “across-the-board conservative,” calls the ads “outright lies.” “I was carrying posters for Republican candidates ever since I was 4,” Miller said. “I have never even met Madigan.” The Corrigan campaign has also criticized Miller for appealing her property taxes, describing the process as “shady.” Millions of homeowners in Cook County appeal their taxes each year, standard practice in a state with the highest property taxes in the nation. Corrigan doesn’t pay property taxes. After the hit ads against Miler, the Liberty Principles PAC financed mailers containing Facebook photos that show Corrigan in full party mode: one shows his head back chugging from a beer bottle, and another shows his tongue out and beer can in hand during a St. Patrick’s Day celebration; in others, he’s making an obscene gesture. A caption with the photos reads: “These are worth at least 1,000 words. But here are ten: We Have Enough Children In Springfield. Don’t Send Any More.” Corrigan refers to himself as a conservative, but in a debate with Miller he waffled on the issues, especially social ones. Miller says she will fight for the rollback of the 34 percent income tax hike approved last summer, the repeal of the taxpayer-funded abortion law (HB 40) Gov. Bruce Rauner signed in September and the repeal of the statewide “sanctuary” bill the governor signed in August. Other conservative primary candidates battling the HRO and their handpicked candidates include Marko Sukovic in the 59th District and Jillian Rose Bernas in the 56th District.)

Like Panther’s fans, they proudly show their affiliation. But that affiliation can easily change. Democrats become Republicans or independents and vice versa. On what then, do Democrats base their challenges to a gerrymandered district?
