My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— ROSKAM rethinks supporting RAUNER – Natasha Korecki
http://www.politico.com/tipsheets/illinois-playbook/2017/10/20/politico-illinois-playbook-roskam-rethinks-supporting-rauner-laquan-mcdonald-three-years-later-rahms-all-in-for-third-term-222901
(FROM THE ARTICLE: U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Ill., is rethinking his support for Gov. Bruce Rauner given the governor’s recent signature on a bill that expands the public funding of abortion, the congressman told POLITICO. Roskam, the Ways & Means Tax Policy chairman who is taking a lead role in an effort to overhaul the U.S. tax code, is the highest-ranking elected official in Illinois to potentially pull back from Rauner after the governor signed HB40. The new abortion law — which Rauner had promised to veto — has so infuriated conservatives, they are now talking about drafting a potential primary opponent to challenge Rauner. Roskam said Rauner’s move to sign the bill was “fundamentally out of step” with his congressional district. “I’ve got to reevaluate that and I’ll reevaluate that in the right time,” Roskam said Thursday when asked if he still supported Rauner. “Signing HB40 was a huge mistake on the policy and it was a huge mistake on the politics. The policy, this is the home of Henry Hyde, the author of the Hyde Amendment and I am his successor.” Roskam himself is facing a reelection challenge and Democrats are lining up to oppose him next year after Hillary Clinton won Roskam’s district in 2016 even as Roskam was reelected. “People have a wide range of views on the question of abortion, and right to life and so forth. But there’s a lot of agreement on this notion that taxpayers ought not to be compelled — and particularly in this environment — to pay for this,” Roskam said. “The politics are very challenging, I think. A big part of the coalition that elects Republicans is a pro-life constituency at a core and I think politics and policy make this error more and more glaring over time … It is a position fundamentally out of step with my constituency.” Is it a sign of a more sizable pulling away from Rauner? While Illinois’ Republican delegation jointly sent out a statement condemning Rauner’s action at the time of the bill signing, so far only Roskam has raised the possibility of withholding support. U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., said Thursday Rauner still had his backing. From a Davis spokesperson: “Congressman Davis is pro-life so he was obviously disappointed in Governor Rauner’s decision to sign HB 40 but he has worked with the governor on many issues beneficial to the 13th district and will continue to do so. Politics will play out but Congressman Davis will continue to work to improve the state of Illinois.” Other Republicans from the delegation — Darin LaHood and John Shimkus — did not respond to inquiries about whether they still stand behind Rauner. A spokesman for U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren said only that the statement from the HB40 signing still stands.)

http://www.newsweek.com/old-americans-suffer-one-worst-wage-gaps-world-688081
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Income inequality is rising and the wage gap is widening for American workers—and the problem is even worse for U.S. senior citizens, a new report shows. It’s so bad, in fact, that the income inequality numbers among the elderly in the U.S. resemble more a report out of a developing country than what would be expected of America. The gap between wealthy and poor seniors is one of the widest in any nation in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The only countries with wider gaps among seniors are Mexico and Chile, according to a study by the OECD and a CNN article. Past generations of retired Americans tended to see increased economic security, but with wages lower in comparison to inflation and fewer middle-class workers retiring with pensions, seniors now are not nearly as financially stable as in the past, according to CNN. Just 29 percent of Americans over 55 years old have a retirement savings account or a pension plan to lean on, a 2015 report from the Government Accountability Office showed. And it only gets worse as younger generations age, another OECD report shows.)

REAL GOP ILLINOIS

https://realgopillinois.com/2017/10/17/return-4-45-million-bribe-rauner/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Remember how Republican officials were so outraged over Governor Bruce Rauner on his HB40 vote to begin taxpayers-funded abortions in Illinois? And did you hear the one about Rauner signing the Democrats bill making Illinois a sanctuary state? RAUNER GIVES $4.45 MILLION TO IL GOP AFTER ABORTION VOTE The Republican outrage, for public relations purposes, now appears to have stilled. Recently, Rauner dumped another $4.45 million into state Republican piggy banks and not a whimper or moan from our Grand Old Party about how Rauner broke his promise to voters. Illinois GOP chief TIM SCHNEIDER claims the money isn’t “hush” money. “Gov. Rauner has shown time and time again that he is committed to revitalizing the Republican Party in the state of Illinois. Thanks to Gov. Rauner’s unprecedented commitment, we are now closer than ever to retiring Speaker Mike Madigan once and for all,” Schneider said in a statement. Republicans have been taking money from left-wing donor Bruce Rauner since 2013 claiming “Because, Madigan.” Is Rauner any different from Democrat House Speaker Mike Madigan? Hasn’t he done everything Madigan has wanted? RAUNER IS A MADIGAN DREAM COME TRUE Rauner is a Madigan dream come true – he’s driven up billions in debt, squealed surrender on a major income tax increase, signed sanctuary state legislation, forced doctors to promote Planned Parenthood, given pro-abortion groups state grants, and signed legislation to force taxpayers to fund abortions. Every cash payment Rauner made to Illinois Republicans and conservative groups is hush money paid to keep their mouths shuts and they have “shut up” for four years counting. RAUNER GAVE $16 MILLION TO GOP OFFICIALS IN 2016 In 2016, Rauner donated $16 million to the Illinois Republican Party, accounting for 96% of its funds and that is how he has been able to control it. In 2016, as an elected Republican, Governor Rauner donated $3 million to left-wing Democrat KEN DUNKIN after a mailer accused him of being a convicted criminal and a deadbeat dad. Bruce Rauner and his Illinois Turnaround PAC donated $6 million to DAN PROFT and Liberty Principles PAC. Illinois Policy Institute is a private tax-exempt group and it does not reveal its donors. JOHN TILLMAN of Illinois Policy Institute has acknowledged receiving $625,000 from Bruce Rauner between 2009 and 2014.  Tillman has never disclosed the millions in donations his other non-profit groups receive from Rauner and his donors. REPUBLICANS HAVEN’T GIVEN RAUNER A DIME OF HIS MONEY BACK None of the Republicans mentioned above have given any of the money Rauner donated to them back since his vote on HB40 to begin taxpayer-funded abortion in Illinois and none of them are disclosing how much money they have received in total from the Governor since they helped him win election. Rauner, who was well known as a major donor to Planned Parenthood prior to his election, is the first U.S. Governor in history to force taxpayers to fund abortions. Real GOP Illinois doesn’t believe Republican officials who say they didn’t know Governor Rauner was an extremist on the abortion issue. We don’t believe them when they claim Rauner lied. RAUNER FUNDED BY HILLARY CLINTON’S BIG DONOR Rauner has plenty of money to spare. He received a $20 million contribution from Illinois’ richest man, billionaire KEN GRIFFIN, who bankrolls the campaigns of HILLARY CLINTON and RAHM EMANUEL, in May. How many Republicans will that buy? Columnist Terri Koyne said it best when she wrote on Illinois Review, “Rauner didn’t betray or deceive anyone [on his abortion views] – Rauner money grabbers did.” Until Republicans return Bruce Rauner’s donations, why should any voter believe them on anything?)

http://dailycaller.com/2017/10/16/total-division-within-our-society-tucker-sounds-off-on-immigration-video/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Fox News host Tucker Carlson sounded off on mass immigration Monday, saying that there is currently “total division within our society.” The Daily Caller co-founder said, “So we are at a moment and every survey shows it, of total division in our society. People have less in common with each than they ever have. And we’re asking basic questions like ‘What ties us all together? Why are we all in this together?’” “Do you not see any correlation between massive immigration since 1965 and where we are now? The country much less united, much less willing to [ask] basic questions like ‘is the Bill of Rights worth continuing?’ things like that. That’s not related to immigration? Of course it is.” Juan Williams also appeared on the segment, pushing back against some of Tucker’s claims, saying that the key was “assimilation.”  “Do you share American values? Do you believe in God-given rights and democracy and representation and law and order? That’s the key. And but it’s not about, at this point, a sort of tribal fight between native born Americans and immigrants,” Williams said.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/16/world/asia/china-internet-cyber-control.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the United States, some of the world’s most powerful technology companies face rising pressure to do more to fight false information and stop foreign infiltration. China, however, has watchdogs like Zhao Jinxu. From his small town on the windswept grasslands of the Inner Mongolia region of China, Mr. Zhao, 27, scours the internet for fake news, pornography and calls to violence. He is one of a battalion of online “supervisors” whom Weibo, one of China’s biggest social media platforms, announced last month it would hire to help enforce China’s stringent limits on online content. For years, the United States and others saw this sort of heavy-handed censorship as a sign of political vulnerability and a barrier to China’s economic development. But as countries in the West discuss potential internet restrictions and wring their hands over fake news, hacking and foreign meddling, some in China see a powerful affirmation of the country’s vision for the internet. “This kind of thing would not happen here,” Mr. Zhao said of the controversy over Russia’s influence in the American presidential election last year. Besides Communist Party loyalists, few would argue that China’s internet control serves as a model for democratic societies. China squelches online dissent and imprisons many of those who practice it. In today’s dollars, I started at $15.56/hour in 1966 and ended at $122,991/year in 1997.  But since 1997, my Civil Service Retirement System pension, currently $50,856, has only increased by COLAs.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Despite images of retirees lounging on Florida beaches and playing on Arizona golf courses, many middle-aged and older Americans plan to stay right where they are when they hit their golden years. Forty-three percent of 45- to 65-year-olds anticipate remaining in their current residence throughout their retirement, according to an Ipsos/USA TODAY survey of 1,170 adults in that age bracket conducted Aug. 30 to Sept. 5. At the same time, home values that have recovered from the mid-2000s housing bust appear to be making a smaller but growing number of people to set their sights on other regions of the country, with 33% of people in that age range saying they’ll move. Another 24% aren’t sure what they’ll do. “The vast majority of older adults want to stay in their homes and communities,” says Rodney Harrell, director of livability thought leadership for AARP. “They want to be near their family and near their church” and friends.)

Last year, news celebrity Megyn Kelly headlined the event and even a few Cubs players, fresh from the World Series win, were on hand. This email went out over the weekend: “As you know, each year for the past decade, it has been Dan Goodwin’s pleasure to host an annual holiday party for leaders throughout our state. While you will receive a formal letter from Mr. Goodwin, he has decided not to host a holiday party this year. As a businessman, philanthropist, and former teacher, he is very aware of how the budget battles in Springfield over the past two years have affected the lives of many of our fellow Illinois citizens. (FROM THE ARTICLE: I recently completed a certification process in my field. This took several years and required clearing numerous hurdles. A few others in my office completed the same process. Typically, in our profession, this merits a raise. It takes a several months for a state board and other entities to process the materials and issue formal documentation. I and another woman in my office were told we would have to wait for that process to conclude before we got our raises. However, two men who finished around the same time received their raises earlier. I asked my boss directly about this and he confirmed that they had, but did not offer me any insight into what that meant for me. To me, this seems like sexism, whether the bosses realize it or not. For some reason it was more imperative to give these guys a raise immediately, before they had their documents in hand, and less important to expedite this process for the women.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— Rauner and our Illinois Republican future – Christopher Robling
http://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511244022-rauner-and-our-illinois-republican-future
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I think Jeanne Ives, or any of another five or six party luminaries, defeats Rauner in the primary on announcement.  His money will not matter. His flannel shirts will not attract. His commercials will persuade no one. He may attack Jeanne, the way he did Aaron and Dan. But for what? Goodness knows. Regardless, it will reduce his vote, not hers. Attacking a Wheaton mom who was among the first female West Point grads, a decorated logistics officer in the U.S. Army, who has earned her spurs in Springfield, worked with Democrats to pass important bills for all of us, and who has never strayed from her stated political beliefs in conservatism and rooting out Illinois corruption? The only campaign person who might recommend such a course probably led Mark Kirk’s re-elect effort. I know, Rauner bought the party. I do not think it matters. I know the State Central Committee is urged to hold the line. But, for what? For this? The party of Reagan? To this we have sunk? What have we delivered to the people – all of the people, from the South Side to Southern Illinois, from Western Illinois University to Northwestern – what have those folks gotten from Rauner and us that is worthy of us holding anything for him? Does any one of us believe that Rauner will get to the re-apportionment table? Or, if one thinks he will, on what basis might one think Rauner would deliver the best map possible for Illinoisans under those circumstances? Instead, for this all-encompassing task, Rauner’s petty personalization against Madigan has shown him uniquely unqualified. I thought Bruce Rauner was a fresh breeze. I thought he was technocrat who would save our finances. I did not expect a conservative, per se, but after his pitch to Jack Roeser, I was promised Bruce would never be a liberal. I got a whopping tax hike, Sanctuary State, Transgender Birth Certificates and taxpayer-funded abortion on demand through nine-months of pregnancy. What is so horrid about Rauner’s incumbency, and what is fatal to his cause, is that his screw-ups repel the reasonable voters, neither stridently “D,” nor “R,” who simply do not want to give everything to the Democrats in November 2018. These folks are the key to 2018. They are not partisans. They are our only path to the reapportionment conversation. I believe Rauner has irrevocably lost them for his serial incompetence. Rauner cannot be our future because of his past 32 months. Will Jeanne Ives, or Dan Cronin, or Peter Roskam, or David McSweeney, or Peter Breen or someone else get those voters? At this moment, I think each would beat Bruce on announcement, and each would qualify as a safe harbor for November voters who have had enough one-party domination. Maybe that is the slogan: “End One-Party Domination, Defeat Rauner.” Count me in. Now, who is the candidate?)

FAMILY PAC & ILLINOIS FAMILY ACTION
— Pro-Life/ Pro-Family Forces Meet … Will Oppose Rauner in Primary and General Election
http://mailchi.mp/7450211a2a56/pro-family-pro-life-meeting-oppose-rauner
(FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT: The following Bill of Particulars was unanimously endorsed today by representatives of 20 statewide pro-life and pro-family organizations at a meeting in Chicago. Bill of Particulars  Whereas the 2016 platforms of both the national and Illinois Republican parties clearly state their opposition to taxpayer-funded abortion. Whereas the Republican members of the Illinois House and Senate have expressed their united opposition to taxpayer-funded abortion as expressed in House Bill 40. Whereas the duly-elected Governor of Illinois, Bruce Rauner, after making several public promises to veto House Bill 40, shockingly, caved to pressure from radical abortion extremists and signed this dastardly legislation into law on September 27, 2017. Whereas every Republican member of the Illinois Congressional Delegate called upon Rauner to veto HB 40 Therefore, we the assembled leaders of 20 pro-life, pro-family statewide organizations in Illinois state the following: We hereby express a vote of “no confidence” in Governor Bruce Rauner. We hereby state that Governor Bruce Rauner, were he to seek re-election for the office of Governor, will not have our support in either a Republican primary or in the General Election of 2018. We state that we will support a candidate or candidates for governor who are  publicly committed to the repeal of House Bill 40 in 2018 Republican primary and, if required, in the 2018 general election. We further state that we will support only candidates for public office who are publicly committed to the repeal of House Bill 40. We encourage the leadership of the Roman Catholic Church, other Christian churches, Jewish people, and other people of Faith throughout Illinois to demand of their local public officials a public commitment to support the repeal of House Bill 40. We ask people of Faith throughout Illinois to join us in prayer for the souls of the many innocent victims of abortion including the unborn, the women victimized, and their families who will suffer as a result of the pen of Governor Bruce Rauner.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— Anti-abortion groups dump Rauner for 2018 – GREG HINZ
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20171009/BLOGS02/171009885/pro-life-groups-dump-rauner-for-2018
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner’s problems with the political right widened and deepened late today as 21 anti-abortion groups declared the GOP incumbent “will not have our support” in next year’s elections, and a conservative lawmaker said she’s getting closer on a decision on whether to oppose him in next year’s Republican primary. In the first action, 21 anti-abortion groups headed by Family-PAC and Illinois Family Action issued a “bill of particulars” aimed at Rauner and his decision to sign a bill extending Medicaid coverage to abortion despite prior promises to veto it. Rauner “caved to pressure from radical abortion extremists and signed this dastardly legislation into law,” the statement said. “We hereby express a vote of ‘no confidence’ in Gov. Bruce Rauner. We hereby state that Gov. Bruce Rauner, were he to seek re-election for the office of governor, will not have our support in either a Republican primary or in the general election of 2018.” It concluded, “We ask people of faith throughout Illinois to join us in prayer for the souls of the many innocent victims of abortion including the unborn, the women victimized, and their families who will suffer as a result of the pen of Gov. Bruce Rauner.” Some of the 21 groups do not want their names made public but among others who signed are Illinois Right to Life and Catholic Citizens of Illinois. The governor’s campaign spokeswoman had no immediate response. Meanwhile, Rep. Jeanne Ives, a DuPage County Republican, told me in a phone interview that she’s “much closer” to deciding whether to run after getting expressions of support from “all over the state.” Ives said she wasn’t surprised at the statement from the anti-abortion groups. “They’re very disappointed that the governor ‘with no social agenda’ betrayed them.” When he campaigned for office four years ago, Rauner indeed said he had “no social agenda” but also indicated on a questionnaire that he would approve legislation authorizing Medicaid abortions. Springfield Democrats forced his hand this spring by sending in such a bill and, after weeks of what he said were efforts to find a compromise, Rauner ended up enacting it.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Luring foreign students to U.S. business schools has become tougher in the anti-immigrant climate spurred by President Donald Trump’s rhetoric and policies, but his rants about Chicago’s crime have made it doubly difficult for local institutions. Foreign students, already facing tighter visa quotas and dimmer prospects for U.S. jobs, have been unnerved by web headlines like Trump’s threat to “send in the feds” to fight crime in Chicago. Quinlan School of Business Dean Kevin Stevens at Loyola University Chicago laments an MBA market that has been soft for years, even without recent pressures from the White House, and says the focus on Chicago crime has taken it to another level. He recently Skyped with one Indian student prospect and her parents to reassure them she would be safe and welcome at the downtown school, where students take classes at night.)

WILLIAM J KELLY
— Republican candidate William J. Kelly attacked by Rauner supporter at Columbus Day Parade
http://www.williamjkelly.org/news/republican-candidate-william-j-kelly-attacked-by-rauner-supporter
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I went to the Columbus Day Parade today not only as a Republican candidate for Governor but as a supporter of the Italian-American community and a 4th degree member of the Knight of Columbus. While doing an interview with reporter Mike Flannery of WFLD-TV, the local FOX affiliate, I was attacked on-camera by a supporter of Bruce Rauner. It is unacceptable for any candidate for public office to be attacked. Consequently, I have filed a police report against my attacker to send a clear message that I will not be intimidated by any political thugs of Governor Rauner. Chicago is known nationwide and worldwide for its violent crime and political corruption. When I win the Republican primary against Bruce Rauner, the man who betrayed voters by making Illinois a sanctuary state, forced taxpayers to fund abortion, and who opposes President Trump, I will restore pride and honor to Chicago and the State of Illinois.)

DAILY CALLER
— Fake Outrage From GOP Leaders Over Rauner, Abortion In Illinois – William J. Kelly  (DIERSEN: In 2014, how many anti-Republicans voted for Rauner/Sanguinetti in your precinct, in your township/ward, in your county, and in Illinois?)
http://dailycaller.com/2017/10/09/fake-outrage-from-gop-leaders-over-rauner-abortion-in-illinois/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Back in 2012, before he was Governor, before he made Illinois a sanctuary state and legalized taxpayer-funded abortions, millionaire Bruce Rauner was buying up the Illinois GOP like it was a depressed financial asset. Rauner had spent his professional life as a vulture capitalist and he knew the Illinois Republican party could be bought at bargain basement prices. He was openly pro-abortion, pro-amnesty, and had padded the coffers of everyone from Planned Parenthood and the ACLU to the Democrat National Committee. He was besties with Rahm Emanuel and made him a millionaire. Rauner’s ugly history was out in the open like laundry on a clothing line. Some Republicans would have you believe it was a secret. It was not. I believed then – and still do now – that Rauner was a clear and present danger to the Republican Party and sounded the warning bells.  Unfortunately, my criticism was met with derision…and threats from the GOP establishment. Didn’t I know Rauner was paying top dollar for Republican loyalty – not just hundreds of thousands of dollars – but millions? I was spoiling their Grand Ole’ Party. Even Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass, who made his name railing against the Combine, was riding the Rauner train.  In July 2013, he wrote this gushing column, “Illinois Republicans: Get ready for Bruce Rauner, multimillionaire businessman and possible candidate for governor could be just the ticket to take on the status quo, fix broken state.” I’m not kidding. That’s the title of Kass’ column. The equivalent of a sloppy wet journalistic kiss. You can’t pay for that kind of media…or can you? It was official: Bruce Rauner, the Combine millionaire was now Illinois’ newest savior. Today is a different story. In the wake of the political bloodbath of HB40, Rauner’s once merry band of conservative enablers are desperate to rewrite history. All of a sudden, they are pointing the finger at Rauner, calling him a liar, crying that they were “deceived.” This outrage is fake. Republicans who took millions of dollars from Rauner are the ones shrieking the loudest.  In the National Review, political operative Dan Proft lashes out at Rauner’s “radical-left social agenda.” Does that mean Dan will be giving Rauner his $5 million back? By claiming Rauner deceived them on abortion and illegal immigration, Rauner’s shills are lying to voters again. Shamelessly, they are also demanding voters support their hand-picked candidate against Rauner in the GOP primary. Why should anyone believe them after the destruction Rauner has wrought? Or is a ruse designed to help Rauner in this desperate but deep blue state? Suddenly even John Kass is anti-Rauner and he’s pushing his own candidate too. Rauner donated $510,000 to the ACLU in 2012, specifically to fund pro-abortion-related litigation. He named Obama’s former Chief of Staff Bill Daley to his transition team. Since elected, he has continued to fund Planned Parenthood with taxpayer-funded grants.  In 2016, Rauner also signed a bill forcing pro-life doctors and crisis pregnancy groups to promote abortion. He made Illinois a sanctuary state and the day after the bill passed the legislature, Republicans said nothing. Where was the outrage of my fellow conservatives then? Rauner isn’t the liar here. The hacks took his money are. They duped local GOP officials statewide and they duped the voters into supporting Rauner. We need to hold them accountable. I’m relieved local Republican leaders and voters finally know the sad truth about Bruce Rauner. Because Illinois cannot afford for history to repeat itself in 2018 and we cannot afford another Bruce Rauner. We really can’t.)

http://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/jeannie-ives-run-for-governor-against-rauner-449912963.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Rep. Jeanne Ives has not ruled out a run for governor and is even being urged to challenge Gov. Bruce Rauner in the upcoming Republican primary. Conservatives have voiced disappointment with Rauner’s record, particularly his recent signing of House Bill 40, an abortion funding and access measure. Ives told NBC 5 she’s “exploring the option by having important conversations with folks around the state” about “challenging the unprincipled and morally bankrupt politicians who have failed to deliver reforms demanded by taxpayers, business and ordinary citizens that have played by the rules and yet, find themselves ignored by leader in both parties.” For now, Ives has not begun circulating petitions for governor, but other conservative members of the Illinois GOP are hoping she will, saying Rauner “has major problems with the base.” Other policies that more conservative members of the party have disagreed with include Rauner’s signing of a bill to effectively turn Illinois into a sanctuary state for undocumented immigrants, as well as a landmark rewrite of the state’s school funding formula. GOP mega donor Dick Uhlein has supported Ives in previous races, and is among those that the Wheaton lawmaker would likely court if she decides to move forward with a statewide run. “This is the people’s seat, not the financiers – even as I recognize that campaigns take financial support. I am fortunate to have had his support before and would hope to gain his and many others’ support in any future race I decide to get involved in – state rep. or otherwise,” Ives said. A West Point graduate, Ives has served in the Illinois House for five years.)

http://chicagotonight.wttw.com/2017/10/07/rep-jeanne-ives-inching-closer-run-governor
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, despite buckets of campaign cash, may be in for a primary fight in his 2018 re-election battle for governor. Suburban Republican lawmaker Jeanne Ives (Wheaton) is considering getting in the race, citing her frustration with the governor’s signing of HB40, a law that will increase access to abortion for state Medicaid recipients and would continue to make abortion legal in Illinois should the U.S. Supreme Court choose to overturn it. “Our team is having important conversations around the state about challenging the unprincipled and morally bankrupt politicians who have failed to deliver reforms demanded by taxpayers, businesses and ordinary citizens that have played by the rules and yet, find themselves ignored by both parties,” Ives said. Rauner is facing a revolt from the grassroots of his party, with several Republican lawmakers saying they can’t support him for re-election and are actively looking for an alternative. Former ally John Tillman, head of the libertarian think tank The Illinois Policy Institute, referred to him as “Benedict Rauner” for allegedly “going back on his word” and signing HB40. Ives would appear to be at a significant financial disadvantage, but could level the playing field if she garners the support of political operatives like Dan Proft and uber-funder Dick Uihlein. Last week, Ives told Chicago Tonight she had received numerous calls from people who want her to run. “Absolutely we need to find an alternative to Gov. Rauner. We need to challenge him if he decides to run again,” she said at the time. Ives says she will be speaking at an event in the Rock Island area on Monday.)

http://www.sj-r.com/news/20171007/statehouse-insider-rift-in-republican-party
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With the fallout continuing over Gov. BRUCE RAUNER’s decision to sign the abortion rights bill into law, questions are being raised about whether a significant rift is developing in the state Republican Party. In the immediate aftermath of the bill signing, several Republican lawmakers said they can no longer support Rauner. Since the legislature currently isn’t in session, we have yet to see how that will translate when it comes time to actually vote on something the governor wants — or doesn’t want — to pass. Then there was the announcement last week by Rep. DAVID HARRIS, R-Arlington Heights, that he would not run for re-election. Harris was one of the handful of House Republicans who voted for the final tax and spending package. He gave an impassioned speech as the House was preparing to override Rauner’s veto of the deal in which he said he didn’t get elected to preside over the financial ruin of the state. His vote, though, drew the ire of anti-tax Republicans and also drew himself a primary opponent. In announcing his decision not to run again, Harris told media outlets the Republican Party is at war with itself. He told public radio that he did not see how the infighting would make the party stronger. Rauner was asked about all of that during an appearance in Chicago last week. “We have many passionate members of the Republican Party,” Rauner said. “Not everybody is going to agree on every issue. We can have reasonable disagreements. Reasonable people can reasonably disagree.” He ticked off issues that Republicans can find common ground on, such as lower taxes, more economic growth, less regulations, more efficient government and political reform like term limits. He said “no group is defined by any one issue.” That’s no doubt the case, but we’ll see if the abortion issue — and Rauner’s position on it — is the dominant one as things move forward.)
— In 2016, Springfield dined out a lot, bought less stuff – Tim Landis  (DIERSEN: What is the main reason why you spent less money in 2016? I would have had at least $72,135 more to spend in 2016 if my Democrat superiors had not wasted my career and forced me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old. My GS-13 Step 10 salary back then was $122,991 in today’s dollars, but my Civil Service Retirement System pension is only $50,856, or $72,135 less.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Blame the state budget, online competition or both, but traditional sales tax collections in Springfield continue to fall behind rapid changes in shopping habits. Local consumers spent more on automobiles, groceries and dining out in 2016, according to a just-completed retail market analysis by The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, while they cut back in areas such as general merchandise, household goods and agricultural products. The annual chamber report showed overall retail sales of $2.682 billion, down 1.3 percent from 2015 to the lowest level in three years. But trends varied across 10 spending categories from 2015 to 2016. A more than 18 percent increase in food sales, including supermarkets, pushed spending in the category over $200 million for the first time since the reports started in 2006. The largest declines were for general merchandise, down 12.6 percent, and agricultural equipment and products, down 7.7 percent.)

CHAMPAIGN/URBANA NEWS GAZETTE
— Rauner’s unforced error – Editorial
http://www.news-gazette.com/opinion/editorials/2017-10-08/rauners-unforced-error.html
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner unleashed a political firestorm within his own party by signing controversial abortion legislation into law. The merits of the abortion issue aside — more on that later — it’s patently clear that Gov. Bruce Rauner made a political mess for himself when he signed a new law that provides for taxpayer-funded abortions in Illinois. He double-crossed Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich, to whom he promised a veto, alienated Republican legislators he has demanded loyalty from and outraged single-issue abortion opponents who now consider him an unreliable and, probably, an immoral turncoat. What, politically, did Rauner gain from signing the bill? Nothing. Abortion-rights proponents perceive decisions like the one the governor made as the minimum they are due. They are angry that Rauner waited as long as he did to announce his support for the measure. So Rauner won himself no friends among Democrats and abortion-rights groups; they have at least 100 other reasons to dislike his brand of governance. In one respect, of course, Rauner’s decision vindicates the self-description he provided voters when running in 2014. Rauner said he wasn’t a politician, something he considered a bad thing, but a businessman who knew how to identify and solve problems, something he suggested Illinois desperately needed. Well, it’s abundantly clear that he’s not a politician. The best of politicians are able to read the tea leaves, weigh costs and benefits, and reach conclusions on dual policy and political questions that are not self-destructive. Rauner did the opposite when he signed the abortion legislation. There’s no doubt Democrats intentionally put him in a trick bag when they passed this cynical measure. That’s what members of one party often do to members of the other party — present them with no-win choices sure to raise vigorous criticism. But just because Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan handed Rauner a gun, it didn’t mean the governor had to shoot his own foot. That’s where the substance of this legislation comes into play. People want to cast House Bill 40 as either pro- or anti-abortion. But abortion is legal and has been since the U.S. Supreme Court issued its 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade, a constitutionally guaranteed right that abortion opponents, no matter how hard they try, cannot abridge. Despite that, abortion-rights proponents have steadily and dishonestly warned since 1973 that Roe is on the verge of being overturned, something that has not happened and remains unlikely to happen. H.B. 40 does two things. It would keep abortion legal if Roe were someday overturned. How ironic it is that our legislators busy themselves passing legislation addressing issues that are not, and may never be, problems while they studiously avoid addressing existing problems that are crippling the state? That provision is essentially meaningless because, in the unlikely event Roe is overturned, the issue would return to the individual states for a legislative solution. Does anyone really think that Illinois legislators wouldn’t rush to reinstate legal abortion? Democrats control Illinois, and few if any of them are willing to challenge the party’s abortion-rights litmus test. The second measure, one much more obnoxious to rank-and-file citizens, is the new mandate that provides taxpayer-funded abortions for individuals covered by state-employee health insurance or those on the Medicaid welfare program. Given the disgraceful fact that one in four Illinois residents is on Medicaid, it’s a virtual certainty that many thousands more abortions will be performed — all at taxpayer expense. Despite what abortion-rights proponents want to acknowledge, there are deep moral questions involved here. To compel all taxpayers — especially those with legitimate and sincere antipathy about the medical procedures that terminate lives of unborn children — to finance abortions is a real slap in the face. On that question alone, Rauner would have been on solid ground to explain — in a persuasive and principled way — why it would be a mistake to press financial responsibility for funding abortions on the public at large. There is no question that Rauner is, for understandable reasons, a flawed chief executive, a duck out of water. It’s not clear whether he’s hard-headed and impulsive, the recipient of bad advice or someone who ignores good advice. But he makes unforced errors, and signing this legislation is one of them. That said, he’s one of the few powerful politicians in Illinois who recognizes the extent to which the state is failing and offers real solutions to restore the state’s weak economy, improve our dire financial standing, eliminate the self-dealing and outright corruption in government and smash a discredited political status quo that is driving productive people from the state. Unfortunately, he made his job that much harder going forward and his retention of the job in 2018 even more problematic with his inept and inconsistent handling of an issue that was, on the merits, much less a Hobson’s choice than he perceived it to be.)

PUBLIUS FORUM
— My Home and Car Vandalized Because I’m a Conservative Writer – Warner Todd Huston  (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, anti-Trumps promote hatred of individuals, organizations, companies, governments, and countries that are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
http://www.publiusforum.com/2017/10/07/home-car-vandalized-im-conservative-writer/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Naturally, as a conservative writer I write on subjects such as Islam and immigration that would goad a liberal to call me such a name. I also have frequently had political yard signs in my yard for the more conservative candidates in my area. S, my home is well known (or at least easily known) as a place where a conservative Republican lives. As to my writing, I’ve never tried to hide where I live nor written under kitschy Internet names. I have always written under my full name, so it probably isn’t too hard for someone to find me if they are serious enough about doing so. At this point, with those two bits of graffiti I began to wonder, is someone was targeting me because of what I do for a living? So, I made a second police report after the garage door incident. Thus far none of these incidents were really too major but they did show signs of coming faster and picking up in severity. I have no troubles with my immediate neighbors. In fact, our neighbors across the street had been on an extended visit to Mexico for the last several months and the neighbors right behind us just moved in and weren’t even here for much of this vandalism. The other neighbors are two elderly neighbors and a middle eastern family I haven’t even really met. I have had no cross words with any of them. But last night it went into high gear. At about 1 AM or so on Saturday morning, I was awakened by a noise outside my home. I can’t really say what the noise was as it woke me from a deep sleep. It was just a shout that awoke me. I looked at my window and saw what struck me as a strange light outside. So, I went to the front door… And saw my car interior on fire… (PICTURE) The surface of my passenger seat was set aflame and the entire interior of the car destroyed. Fortunately it isn’t a new car (it’s a 1999 Oldsmobile 88). But unfortunately, because it is so old I took off the comprehensive coverage and only have liability. So, insurance won’t cover this destruction and I am now without a car. Naturally the police became involved, but they say they won’t classify it as arson because they don’t have any evidence to show for it. A plastic pop bottle was left inside by who ever did this. It smelled of gas to me. Police wondered if I smoked in the car. I don’t smoke cigarettes and only occasionally smoke a cigar but NEVER in a car. If you’ve ever smoked a cigar you know that doing so in a car is a messy, ashy endeavor. I don’t do it. So, there is nothing that should have set my car on fire  7 hours after I last drove it. Also, it was the surface of the seats that went up in flames. Nothing electrical any where near the burn zone. I firmly believe that this is an attack on me because of my writing. This is the tolerant left in action. They are trying to intimidate me. I will not be silenced.)

http://www.frontpagemag.com/fpm/268025/decolonize-abolish-bend-knee-dawn-perlmutter
(FROM THE ARTICLE: NFL Football players are bending a knee in protest during the National Anthem for the same reason that cities across the country are abolishing Columbus Day and for the same reason that there are widespread attacks on Confederate monuments, Columbus statues, fallen officer memorials and veterans’ monuments. Symbols of American history and heroism have been methodically transformed into symbols of oppression, genocide and racism, not that the football players understand this. They are just the latest group of useful idiots being manipulated by a long-established resistance movement. Current American resistance movements and their armies of anarchist protesters thoroughly understand the subversive significance of these iconoclastic acts. The abolition of national holidays, the destruction of historic statues, the desecration of heroes’ memorials and publicly disrespecting traditional civic rituals are time tested revolutionary strategies. Bending a knee is just another gesture in the plan to fundamentally transform America’s past and future. The American resistance movement existed long before Trump became president. It is comprised of many surprisingly unrelated national and global organizations from communists to environmentalists to black nationalists. Identity is their philosophy; decolonization is their doctrine; victimhood is their strategy; grievance is their industry; protest is their tactic; and revolution is their goal.)

Advertisements in the nation’s media paid for by federal, state and local authorities totaled about $2 billion from 2013 to 2016, the first three full years of Mr. Peña Nieto’s administration, according to data provided by the government. This money, say critics, is one of the most severe restrictions on the media’s freedom of expression here, often subjecting reporters and editors to government influence, with overtly critical journalists fired, negative stories censored and investigative reporting thwarted. “The ties between government and media is like diabetes: It’s a disease that stops you from leading a normal life,” Mr. Curzio added. “It generates such an alarming feeling that that this is how the establishment works.”)

U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT
— Tennessee GOP Tightens Rules for Who Can Run as Republican – AP (DIERSEN: In my opinion, rules for who can run as a Republican in Illinois should be made much tighter. Ever-increasingly, voters in my precinct who cast Republican primary ballots make it clear to me that they vote for Democrats in general elections. Ever-increasingly, candidates who have cast Republican primary ballots make it clear to everyone that they are really RINOs, Democrats, Libertarians, or Greens. Most commonly they reject the traditional family, right to life, immigration, illegal drugs, and equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) planks in the Republican Party platform and the Illinois Republican Party platform. Most commonly, they reject the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) resolution against video gambling.  Most commonly, they focus on getting rid of Republicans like me who support the aforesaid planks and resolution. They stress that I am no longer a TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, MTRCC webmaster, Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member, American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member, GAO employee, etc.)
https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/tennessee/articles/2017-10-07/tennessee-gop-tightens-rules-for-who-can-run-as-republican
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the little-noticed change to party bylaws approved this summer, candidates must now have voted in three out of the last four GOP state or federal level primaries to be considered bona fide Republican candidates. For candidates seeking to appear on next year’s ballot that will mean voting histories can be scrutinized going back to the August 2012 primary. The previous standard was for candidates to have voted in two of the last four GOP primaries. Exceptions in the new rules will be made for candidates not old enough to have voted in the last four primaries, moved from another state or had an illness or military service that prevented them from voting. A letter from established Republicans to vouch for GOP newcomers could override the primary voting requirement, at the chairman’s discretion. Challenging a candidate’s bona fide status requires a complaint from two Republican voters. But in another change, those complaints must be made from the same district the candidate is running in to avoid activists from trying to interfere with races outside their home areas. Golden, who will have the final say over all challenges, said he expects successful efforts to oust candidates to be rare.)
