(FROM THE ARTICLE: During a heated June 9 finance committee meeting, DuPage County board member Ashley Selmon, D-Addison, accused Sheriff James Mendrick, a Republican, of “irresponsible rhetoric” about “looting and sledgehammers” that led Elmhurst and Addison to board up businesses amid a wave of Black Lives Matter protests across the county and around the country. Mendrick took exception, saying the sledgehammers and looting were facts, not rhetoric. “It’s an insult that you say that there were just peaceful demonstrations,” he told Selmon. “I am sorry, but they were not. We were being attacked at Oak Brook Mall. That’s just a fact. I was there. My staff was there. Don’t belittle what we just did for this county.” The exchange happened during a debate about “equity” raises — possibly as high as $25,000 — for sheriff’s department employees, and Patch found that neither Selmon nor Mendrick was entirely correct. According to police reports, there was no attack on officers or anybody else at Oak Brook Center mall on May 31 or in the days following, only minor property damage. According to Oak Brook police, a brick was thrown at a Neiman Marcus store window around 11 a.m. that day, causing a dozen punctures to the glass. A witness saw six men involved in the incident, but they sped away, according to police. In one case, police did report seeing a sledgehammer in plain view in a car’s back seat, according to a sheriff’s department after-action report. According to the report, officers tried to stop a number of cars at the mall that night, with some passengers mocking or swearing at officers and others fleeing from police. In an interview, sheriff’s department spokesman Justin Kmitch said when the sheriff mentioned “attacks,” he was referring to a number of instances in the days leading up to the committee meeting. “There were no physical assaults of officers at Oak Brook,” Kmitch said. “Protecting the mall was everyone’s priority out there.” He noted the sheriff set up a command center at the mall, which he called the “crown jewel of the DuPage County economy.” At the committee meeting, Selmon said she and other county board members had received regular reports of the protests around DuPage County from the county’s homeland security department. “Unless I’m illiterate, we did not get a single report of anything categorized as looting in this county,” she said. While she may not have received a report, it’s also inaccurate to say there were no cases of looting in the county. About a week before the meeting, more than 30 stores were looted and 11 people arrested in Naperville, according to police and media reports. The looting started around 9 p.m., following a peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstration that had been held earlier in the day, according to Naperville Police Chief Robert Marshall. The sheriff’s department report on the incident said “large explosive devices” were thrown at police officers, and at least one bystander was stabbed while trying to help police, according to Marshall. About the same time, stores in Downers Grove and Aurora were also looted, according to media reports. According to the sheriff’s after-action report, officers in a number of instances also found people with weapons near protests. In Roselle, for instance, a car stopped near a demonstration contained two rifles, six handguns, body armor and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition, the report said. And in Elmhurst, police took into custody a man who was seen arriving at a June 1 protest with a rifle, bag, helmet and body armor, according to police. In an email, Selmon said that after the June 9 committee meeting, she and others were able to get more complete information both from the state’s attorney and the sheriff’s office. “As I said, the Homeland Security reports did not indicate those events, but the further information we received did elaborate and confirm a more complete picture, including some incidents of looting/theft/burglary, as was seen in other communities and nationally,” Selmon said. “Similarly, the events were, and thankfully continue to be, overwhelmingly peaceful.” The county board approved the raises for the sheriff’s department employees. Selmon and fellow Democrat Liz Chaplin, whose district includes Elmhurst, dissented.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Protesters were out in full force Monday outside Momence City Hall before and during the evening’s city council meeting, but so were Momence residents. Approximately 40 residents showed their support for their community as a Black Lives Matter rally drew about 25 to 30 people who were chanting and holding signs. Momence resident Steve Gross said he was hoping to get inside the city council meeting to talk about this weekend’s upcoming community garage sales. The meeting space had reached capacity limits and members of the public were admitted in turns. “People need to be responsible and stuff, but I couldn’t even get in to address anything with all this,” Gross said. “Actually, I had somebody engage me and be aggressive toward me. … It’s super unfortunate.” The protesters were on the sidewalk just east of the City Hall entrance, while the town supporters remained on the west side of the entrance. There were a couple skirmishes. At 8 p.m. police squad cars from St. Anne, Grant Park, two from Manteno and one from Kankakee County Sheriff’s department arrived and parked on West Washington Street. Those officers joined four officers from the Momence Police department who were there for crowd control and to keep peace. “You’ve got some people who are being hotheads, and some people are reasonable,” Gross said. Mayor Chuck Steele was in attendance and presided over the council after missing the previous two meetings due to his wife’s illness. The protesters have voiced their displeasure of Steele regarding statements he made about a June 9 BLM march in Momence and his calling for Alderwoman Rebekah Cope-Evers’ resignation because she attended the event. The protesters were chanting “Black Lives Matter,” “Momma, I can’t breathe” and holding signs that read “No justice, No Peace,” and “Make Racism Wrong Again.” A couple of the residents who showed up in support of their community were holding signs that read “We Support Our Mayor & Police,” and others were carrying the American flag and “Back the Blue” signs. “We love our mayor,” one resident said. “I’m here to just support my town,” Momence resident Michael Quirk said. “I think just like everyone else, everyone is fed up with all the protests and stuff, and I think the mayor took offense when that happened. I think he took it to heart because he knows that this isn’t a racist town. There’s no bigotry or anything, and it just got spun out and everyone took their opportunity.” Several people spoke during the citizen forum portion of the meeting, including Julia McDonald, of Kankakee, who asked the mayor for a public apology. “We ask that you let go of your defensiveness and instead open your eyes and your ears,” she said in part. “Listen to people when they have something to say on these streets, whether you agree with them or not.” Normon Davis, a Black Momence resident, spoke during the forum in support of Steele, who he has known for 24 years. Davis said he grew up in the housing projects in Chicago. “In no way does he deserve the title of racist,” Davis said. “… He’s shown a lot of generosity throughout the community. Over the 24 years he’s shown without words his compassion and his love for the community. “Being reared in the housing projects, I know firsthand what true racism is, and Mayor Chuck Steele does not fit the bill.” After he addressed the council, Davis said residents support Steele. “Momence is one of the most peaceful towns that you’ll encounter in the United States,” Davis said. “We’re a small community. … The bottom line is this right here — get to know someone before you pass judgment.” During the mayor’s report during the council meeting, Steele said he and Police Chief Brian Brucato attended the NAACP law enforcement meeting in July in Kankakee. “Brian has already signed the 10 Shared Principles, and we will be getting posters of that made up,” Steele said. “We will be bringing that to the council next meeting to have the council approve it also.” The 10 Shared Principles are measures designed to build trust between law enforcement and communities of color. The Momence Police will also adopt the #8cantwait de-escalation initiatives for police. “For the most part we already do most of everything that’s on there, and I support our police department 100 percent,” said Steele, who declined to comment any further after the meeting.)

On Friday, 11 protesters were arrested after a small protest blocking East State Street, according to WTVO. Then Saturday, an additional six protesters were arrested during a counterprotest at a “Back the Blue” rally in support of police. Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea, Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana, and State’s Attorney Marilyn Hite Ross held a press conference Saturday afternoon announcing the charges. Beleaguered white people technically have the Civil Rights Act of 1964 at their back but, in the witch hunt atmosphere currently prevailing in America, it’s unclear whether they’ll have the courage to use it. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 doesn’t mince words. It exists to outlaw discrimination based upon a person’s race, color, religion, sex, or country of national origin. It explicitly expands these protections to employment programs. Under Title VII, “It shall be an unlawful employment practice for any employer, labor organization, or joint labor-management committee controlling apprenticeship or other training or retraining, including on-the-job training programs to discriminate against any individual because of his race, color, religion, sex, or national origin in admission to, or employment in, any program established to provide apprenticeship or other training. In the “white only” portions of the program, whites must admit that they are racist (and, presumably, any refusal is more proof of racism), and then they must have that racism trained out of them. Christopher Rufo has obtained the materials for the segregated “whites only” training. As such, the U.S. federal government must intervene to crush the violent insurrectionists wherever they rear their heads. This behavior needs to be stopped in its tracks. Serious federal measures must be deployed — the risks to our republic are growing by the day. Those alive when Fort Sumter was fired upon in 1861 could not have imagined the carnage it would unleash — more than 618,000 dead Americans in just four years. By continuing to allow our current situation to fester, we risk a similar dark outcome. Our first Civil War percolated with small clashes for several years before Fort Sumter turned it into a declared hot war. As such, letting the current situation continue to percolate ignores the lessons of history and may be a major miscalculation.
