(DIERSEN: The decline and lurch to the left of the Fox News Network provides an opening for any astute conservative billionaire: create a news network specifically intended to provide news from the viewpoint of most of America, which is to say the seventy-five percent of Americans who live in Flyover Country. While the geographic concentration of political power in America is appalling, the geographic concentration of media power is much worse. Because the media defy elections and, in fact, determine elections, having almost all national news pass through the tiny channel of the New York-to-Washington Beltway is toxic to our national life. This is not an ideological monopoly, but rather a geographical monopoly. But because the environment between Washington and New York is so utterly artificial and so completely leftist, what has happened to Fox News – a constant drift to the left – is an unrelenting and corrosive force that isolates the media and the government of America from the overwhelming majority who live in Middle America. Consider a neutral and fair political site like RealClearPolitics. It is not uncommon to have one third of the stories from New York media outlets and one third of the stories from Washington media outlets and the rest from national outlets without a particular geographical designation but situated in the Beltway. On those rare instances in which another city’s media has stories in RealClearPolitics, the city is usually Boston or Los Angeles. What that means is that the vast majority of Americans are utterly disenfranchised politically in the only area that really counts in a nation as large and media-driven as America. What this also means is that as Fox News declines into irrelevance, as it will, there is a gaping hole for those with the money, the guts, and the vision to create a television network specifically focused on Middle America. This network should include a news network located in the center of America and dedicated to presenting stories that inform Americans what is happening in this majority of our nation. There is vast ignorance within the Beltway media about how the energy industry works or how wheat and cotton are grown and cattle raised and ores mined. While Fox News periodically had stories presented from its Beltway offices about the plight of the timber industry in Washington State or the small oil producers in Oklahoma, stories from the Middle America News Network would be produced by those who actually live in these areas and presented to Americans by newscasters whose home is in Omaha or Knoxville or Salt Lake City or Little Rock. This new network would also have a much easier time breaking into the cable news lineup than Fox News did because it would overtly be representing the perspective of local listeners in cities around the nation. Fox News rightly picked the target audience to make it grow: those millions of Americans disgusted by the ideological monopoly of the leftist establishment media. The Middle America News Network would represent not just the ideologically disempowered, but the culturally disempowered, who find their beliefs and lives treated as weird curiosities. The market share for this news network could skyrocket fast, particularly among the tens of millions of Americans who simply never watch network news any longer. This new network could also introduce a whole new way of interviewing members of Congress. Instead of having these members show up at a studio in Washington or New York, the network could invite them to be interviewed for national television in their home states. Those who decline an interview might find their likely rivals in the next election interviewed instead with the tag “The Middle America News Network invited Senator Mugwump to discuss the impact of environmental regulations on business here, but he was too busy in Washington to come here for the interview.” The idea would be to shift always, always, always the focus of attention and interest away from that micron of America that is the Beltway and back to the huge expanse from Alaska to Minnesota to Florida to Arizona that is America. The idea would also be to force both political parties, which is to say Washington Party A and Washington Party B, to actually notice forty or so states that may be called “Flyover Country” if they wish their political parties to have a chance at gaining or holding power. This network could transform politics in America by forcing the parties to turn from Washington (“The Swamp”) and back to the American people spread all across this land.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Currently there are 2,625, 261 federal retirees or their survivors. Right now, as you read this, another 300,000 active duty federal workers are eligible to retire and will, sooner or later, do so. That’s a lot of people. Go into any McDonald’s, from Scottsville, Ky., to Pismo Beach, Calif., at any time of the day and you will likely see a former fed, or six, chowing down and talking. The same for your local grocery store whether it is in Washington, D.C., to Washington Court House, Pa. Or on Guam or American Samoa. Former feds, and their wallets, purses or credit cards, are just about everywhere. Years ago a very sophisticated federal retiree — my mother — who lived near Fort Myers, Fla., explained that lots of people continue to eat out after retirement “we just do it earlier.” So we may not see them, but they are definitely there. According to data from the Office of Personnel Management just over 17 percent of all federal retirees have monthly annuities of $4,000 or more. Another 22 percent get between $3,000 and $2,999 while 14 percent get $1,000 to $1,999. Fewer than 9 percent get $1,000 or less per month from their civil service retirement benefit. Most of the current retirees are under the older CSRS system which fully indexes their annuities to inflation regardless of age. Workers retiring under the FERS system get cost of living adjustments (starting at age 62) that are partially indexed to inflation. At least since the Reagan administration. But life-after-retirement (for current feds too) could change drastically if Congress goes along with the Trump administration plan to charge current workers 6 percent more for their retirement benefits, to reduce COLAs for CSRS retirees by giving them 0.5 percent less than the actual increase in inflation each year, by eliminating COLAs completely for FERS retirees (9 out of every 10 current workers is under FERS and would become part of the Zero Diet COLA group), and to eliminate an annual “gap” payment that now goes to FERS retirees until they reach age 62 and become eligible for Social Security. Although they too retire under an enhanced version of the civil service retirement program, many politicians at the House, Senate and now White House level view federal workers either as clowns, drones or creatures from the swamp. They lap up studies — usually from conservative think tanks —showing federal workers are overpaid and ignore those that show feds, particularly at higher grade and skill levels, are dramatically underpaid compared to their private sector counterparts in Washington, Houston, San Francisco and New York City. Reducing the buying power of federal workers (by making them pay more for their pensions) and retirees, by reducing or eliminating COLAs in the future, could hurt many communities that depend on the federal pay or pension dollar to stay afloat. (FROM THE ARTICLE: DuPage County Board committee will discuss the possible repeal of its 2009 ban on video gaming for businesses located in unincorporated areas. Board member Paul Fichtner told the board last week the matter will be discussed at the June 13 Finance Committee meeting. “It was the consensus of the committee to discuss this and perhaps make a decision at that same meeting three weeks from now,” Fichtner said. “Because of the nature of the topic and the interest it may bring, I’m suggesting we start at 7:30 a.m.” Board member Jim Zay requested the committee address the matter. “Obviously, we’ve been getting emails and public comment (from people interested in the repeal), so I think it’s time to take another look at it,” Zay said. “I’m not saying we’re in favor of it or against it, but it’s time to listen to their concerns and see what’s going on. A lot of things have changed since 2009 with video gaming so I think it’s time for the board to give these people an opportunity to hear their concerns and look at it again.” Individuals both for and against video gaming have spoken at the last three county board meetings. Jeremy Truex, co-owner of a tavern located in an unincorporated part of Lombard, is among those who think the prohibition should be removed. “The county is missing out on some serious tax revenue,” Truex said. “You’ve got people going to other municipalities and spending their money, whereas they could be spending it in unincorporated DuPage County with all its small businesses.” Will County, which does allow video gaming in unincorporated areas, collected $198,915 in tax distributions in 2016 from the 27 establishments licensed for video gaming, according to the Illinois Gaming Board. In Kane County, 12 such businesses earned $134,694 in tax distributions last year, and 61 businesses with video gaming earned $623,636 for Lake County over the same 12-month period, state numbers show. Some counties, like Cook, do not permit video gaming in unincorporated areas. Will County instituted a ban on any new licenses in April 2015, citing loopholes and liberal state regulations that permit video gaming in unexpected places like gas stations. The 31 Aurora businesses with licenses for video gaming include restaurants, pubs, private social clubs and fraternal organizations such as Amvets and a Moose lodge. The city of Aurora took in $332,045 in tax distributions from those establishments in 2016. Naperville adopted a city-wide ban on video gaming in October 2009. In an email statement, Naperville communications manager Linda LaCloche affirmed Wednesday, “the city of Naperville continues to support our decision to opt out of the Illinois Video Gaming Act.” While video gaming has earned nearly $171 million in tax distributions for counties and municipalities since 2012, some critics say the activity erodes the amount of money gamblers spend at casinos and boats, where it is permitted. In its ordinance prohibiting video gaming, Naperville cited the activity as being inconsistent with family values, being associated with corruption and enticing players to game faster for longer periods of time and at higher rates of wagering, according to a study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At a previous DuPage County Board meeting, Villa Park resident Kathy Gilroy asserted that the board “had no duty to level the playing field. This board has a duty to the welfare of county residents.” Zay and Jim Healy were on the board eight years ago when the video gaming ban was instituted. “I don’t think attitudes have changed very much since 2009,” Healy said. “Obviously, we’ll wait to hear what people have to say. At this moment, nothing has changed in my mind.” The Finance Committee will meet at 7:30am on June 13 in the County Board Room of the Jack T. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Like previous violations of law by public officials in DuPage and other counties, instead of following the law, they simply get the law changed – which is their right to try and accomplish, but it sets a bad precedent for Illinois public officials – one that essentially breeds corruption by demonstrating that laws do not matter. Previous changes have been to pass a Bill concerning the election code, and backdate its effective date to allow extended times for publication of referendum. Another was to change the township code to authorize giving away mulch and delivering it onto private property. And changing the way drug funds must be utilized, after writing about a rogue State’s Attorney who chose to spend it outside what the current law allowed. If this is what we have come to in Illinois, someone should tell us exactly which laws are to be followed, and which ones can be safely ignored. Targeting a show’s advertisers is a potent line of attack in television; the swift abandonment of Bill O’Reilly’s advertisers last month after the revelation of settlements paid to women to quiet harassment charges was widely considered a factor in his firing by Fox. Media Matters is “targeting my advertisers to silence my voice,” Hannity tweeted. “They hope to get me fired. Rush (Limbaugh), O’Reilly, (Glenn) Beck, (Don) Imus and now me.” He posted a series of links to articles about Media Matters’ funding, and ties to figures reviled by many conservatives, like George Soros and Bill Clinton. Media Matters denied that it was mounting a pressure campaign focusing on Hannity’s advertisers. The organization’s president Angelo Carusone said he hadn’t spoken to any sponsors. He said he wanted advertisers to be aware of Hannity’s “volatility” as part of a general Media Matters campaign to get them to think about advertising on Fox; Media Matters hasn’t posted a list of sponsors for any other specific show.
