(FROM THE ARTICLE: Whatever happens on the GOP side doesn’t really matter. Illinois is solidly Democratic statewide. That reality has driven credible Republicans to the sidelines, leaving ballot spots to be filled by wannabes who range from unprepared dreamers to outright nuts. Republicans bear most of the responsibility for their current state of affairs. In 1994, when Republican Gov. Jim Edgar ran the state, every statewide office was held by a Republican. Corruption under Edgar’s successor — Gov. George Ryan — laid the groundwork for GOP doom. (Ironically, Ryan’s Democratic successor, Rod Blagojevich, was equally corrupt, but his sickening tenure didn’t hurt his party at all.
