FBI agent Kevin Rojek said authorities do not yet have “an identified motive,” nor would he specify the type of gun used. Mr. Rojek also said authorities used “assets” to check “suspicious packages” near the shooter’s body after he was killed. State police said all three shooting victims at the rally were adult males. They did not provide identifications. A Trump supporter said he saw the man with a rifle crawling on top of the roof of a building behind the campaign rally stage. According to the eyewitness, as reported to the BBC, rally-goers outside the event spotted the man “bear crawling” across the roof, carrying a rifle. The witnesses frantically alerted law enforcement and were surprised when Mr. Trump was not immediately ushered from the stage. “We’re pointing at the guy, crawling up the roof,” the witness said. “He had a rifle, you could clearly see he had a rifle. I’m thinking to myself, why is Trump still speaking? Why have they not pulled him off the stage?” The witness said he alerted Secret Service on the roof to the crawling man with the rifle, but Mr. Trump was not removed from the stage. “The next thing you know, five shots rang out,” the witness said, adding he is “100%” certain the shots came from the rifle of the man crawling across the roof. Mr. Trump was struck on the right ear but survived and is reported to be “fine.” One rally attendee was killed and two others were critically injured, the Secret Service said.)

The roof where the person lay was less than 150 meters (164 yards) from where Trump was speaking, a distance from which a decent marksman could reasonably hit a human-sized target. The AR-15, like the shooter at the Trump rally had, is the semi-automatic civilian version of the military M-16. Crooks was reportedly wearing a t-shirt bearing the emblem of a pro-gun Youtube channel when he was killed on Saturday by a special forces sniper after firing three shots at the former US president. . .Reports said that heavily-armed US security agents have raided Crooks’ home in Bethel Park on the edge of Pittsburgh, roughly an hour’s drive south of Butler, the small and hard-up post-industrial town where he tried to kill Trump. The FBI said that Crooks was not carrying any identification when he made the assassination attempt and had to be identified using DNA samples. . .US security forces said that they had recovered an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle lying by Crook’s body. AR-15 semi-automatic rifles have been used in several mass shootings in the US and have become the focus of the gun debate. Photos also showed a member of the US security forces standing over Crooks’ body. Crooks was wearing beige cargo-style shorts and a grey T-shirt bearing the logo of a pro-gun Youtube channel called Demolition Ranch. A registered Republican  Videos and photos on the internet showed Crooks to be a tall, slender, white man who wore glasses and had long sandy-brown hair. Voter-registration data showed that Crooks was a registered Republican voter but on Jan 20, 2021, two weeks after pro-Trump alt-right supporters stormed the White House, Crooks gave $15 to a grassroots Democratic group. Crooks didn’t have a criminal record. A video showed him graduating from a local school in 2022 and winning a prize for math and science.

Trump supporters blasted the Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting Trump as a former U.S. president. Billionaire Elon Musk called for the agency’s leadership to resign. “How was a sniper with a full rifle kit allowed to bear crawl onto the closest roof to a presidential nominee,” asked conservative activist Jack Posobiec on social media site X. FBI Special Agent Kevin Rojek, speaking at a press briefing, called the number of shots the attacker was able to fire “surprising.” The Secret Service did not have a representative in that press briefing late on Saturday, which included FBI and state law enforcement officials.
The Secret Service said shortly after the shooting that it has begun an investigation and briefed Democratic President Joe Biden, Trump’s rival in the Nov. 5 election, though the agency did not immediately respond to additional requests for comment regarding its protocols. The Pennsylvania State Police referred questions to the Secret Service. Ben Maser said he was outside the rally perimeter, listening to Trump, when he noticed two officers seemingly looking for someone. Maser, a 41-year old welder, started scanning the area too. “I saw the guy on the roof. I told the officer that he was up there. He went about looking for him,” said Maser. . .Paul Eckloff, a former Secret Service agent who retired in 2020, said agents would have surveyed all the rooftops with a line of sight ahead of time. “This person either concealed themselves until they became a threat, or were not a threat until they revealed their weapons,” said Eckloff.)
