Bruce Rauner and the senior vice president of Byline Bank, told the board that Tollway Executive Director Liz Gorman had refused to meet with him one-on-one before the meeting. Gorman told the board that she refused the meeting because of threats Gomez had made against her. “I feel uncomfortable and very threatened,” Gorman said. She said she had been willing to meet with Gomez with someone else present, but Gomez declined. The dispute between Gomez and Gorman comes at a time of increased scrutiny of Tollway operations. On Tuesday, members of the state Senate Transportation Committee questioned Tollway officials about contracts awarded to firms with political connections or ties to the agency. After Thursday’s meeting, Gorman told reporters the threats were “verbal” but declined to elaborate further, telling reporters they could request information under the Freedom of Information Act. My excuse for not starting the car and not driving it each summer is my spending 10+ hours each and every day putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out. In addition, since 2005, I have had a 2005 Corvette to drive; since 2012, a 2013 Dodge Charger R/T Max to drive; and since 2016, a 2016 Ford Mustang to drive. The carburetor is being rebuilt today. So far, D & M has replaced the car’s 5 tires with correct Firestone Wide Oval White Letter replica tires from Coker Tire, replaced all four calipers, replaced the master brake cylinder and fuel pump, fixed a fuel leak, fixed a passenger door latch problem, installed a new battery, changed the oil and filter, etc. D & M has not yet checked A/C and or taken it on a test drive. After investing all this money in the car, I am increasing its stated value insurance from $30,000 to $35,000. From now on, I will start and drive the car at least once each summer. The car is a Steel Cities Gray Coupe with the base 350 engine, automatic, power steering, A/C, black leather seats, AM/FM stereo radio, and heavy duty battery. The VIN is 1Z37K2S503860. I ordered the car in August of 1971 after my 1969 Dodge Charger SE was stolen in Chicago. I paid for the car with the $2,500 insurance settlement, $500 from my savings, and a $3,000 from a car loan. I took delivery on October 14, 1971. I paid the car loan off with money that I earned working for IRS full-time and working for Firestone Stores part-time. I stored the car in my mother’s garage in Crete 1971-1984 and in my attached, insulated, and heated garage in Wheaton since then, and since 1995, on a hydraulic lift. Money Magazine’s February 1978 “one person’s finances” article on me mentioned the car and included a picture of the car with me in it.)

Americans live such different lives that what we buy, do or watch can be used to predict our politics, race, income, education and gender – sometimes with more than 90 percent accuracy. It turns out that people are separated not just by gun ownership, religion and their beliefs on affirmative action – but also by English muffins, flashlights and mustard. To prove it, University of Chicago economists Marianne Bertrand and Emir Kamenica taught machines to guess a person’s income, political ideology, race, education and gender based on either their media habits, their consumer behavior, their social and political beliefs, and even how they spent their time. Their results were released in a new working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research. The duo trained their algorithms to detect patterns in decades of responses to three long-running surveys, each with between 669 and 22,093 responses per year. The surveys were tuned and filtered to be consistent over time, which allowed Bertrand and Kamenica to measure how America’s cultural divides have evolved. . .But others are revelatory: White people and black people are almost as different in their spending habits as rich people and poor people are, for example. Pay was terrible; there were no health benefits or pensions. It was the unions that gave us the 5-day, 40-hour work week, pensions, and other benefits. And Republicans, the party of the 1 percent, as the recent tax bill demonstrated, have already signaled they are coming after Medicare and Social Security. (FROM THE EDITORIAL: When it comes to internet shenanigans at election time, the Russians don’t have the market cornered. A few members of the U.S. Congress — Democrats and Republicans — have set up “fake news” websites designed to sway voters in their direction so they can win re-election. Not cool. Tim Johnson of the McClatchy News Service reported that three sitting senators who are in the midst of tough re-election campaigns and one House member have created sites that look like internet news pages, but their aim is to put positive spin on the candidates. For example, Nevada Republican Sen. Deal Heller’s website, NevadaSenateUpdates.com, even has weather and calendar widgets on the top of its page, just like those of a conventional newspaper website. The “paid for by Heller for Senate” is in dim gray type on a black bar at the bottom, Johnson reported. On the other side of the aisle is a the faux internet news site put up by the Missouri Democratic Party — The Missouri Download — to promote the re-election chances of Sen. Claire McCaskill. Johnson reports that its declaimer is almost impossible to read. According to election watchdog groups, these are not isolated incidents, but a troubling trend. “These websites are designed with one thing in mind: to trick the reader into thinking they’re a legitimate news source. And anyone who says otherwise is being disingenuous. A label tucked at the bottom of a web page isn’t enough,” said Aaron Sharockman, executive director of PolitiFact, a fact-checking website. Brendan Fischer, of the Campaign Legal Center, a nonpartisan group on campaign finance and democracy issues, agreed. “You’d have to scroll all the way to the bottom and read the fine print to learn that these sites are actually generated by partisan political actors who are trying to win an election,” Fischer said, adding that structure of the websites indicates that “there is a degree of trust in the news media, and that’s why these candidates and parties are trying to emulate traditional news media sites.” While these campaign websites aren’t illegal, as the source and campaign information are included (albeit it in teeny-tiny print), there are certainly deceitful. All voters — Democrats, Republicans and independents — should be irked. Voters deserve better. Those in office, or seeking office, should want to get information out to the public that is positive to their campaigns and that costs doubts on their opponents. But this must be done in the open. When creating websites for these political purposes, make it crystal clear — in bright, big and bold letters — who is responsible for the content. Then the voters can judge for themselves the credibility. If the public doesn’t push back now on this dubious tactic, the proliferation will continue. It must stop.)
