WALL STREET JOURNAL
— Democrats and Republicans Aren’t Just Divided. They Live in Different Worlds. The two parties represent radically different slices of the American economy.- Aaron Zitner, Dante Chinni, Jessica Wang, and Danny Dougherty (DIERSEN: Who do you have little in common with? I have little in common with those who are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
https://www.wsj.com/graphics/red-economy-blue-economy/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: America’s political polarization is almost complete. Its two main political parties increasingly represent two different economies. And they barely overlap. Democrats can be found in educated cities and suburbs where professional jobs are plentiful. Republicans live in working-class and rural communities, home to agriculture and low-skill manufacturing. . .Household income tells a similar story. A decade ago, median household income was about the same for each party. Since then, it has jumped nearly 17% in Democratic districts while falling 3% in Republican ones. . .Republican districts, by contrast, hold growing shares of the nation’s agriculture, mining and low-skill manufacturing jobs, many of which do not require a college degree, have lower pay and are more exposed to overseas competition. . .People with college degrees are more concentrated in Democratic districts than in Republican districts. . .Why does this matter? “When folks have less in common with one another, it’s hard to expect that they’re going to see the problem the same way,” said Roger Johnson, president of the National Farmers Union, “let alone recognize that a problem exists.”)

HR
— How to Calculate Damages in a Slander Case (DIERSEN: I should sue those who have slandered me. Their slandering me has caused me to lose a tremendous amount of income.)
https://www.hg.org/legal-articles/how-to-calculate-damages-in-a-slander-case-38152

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Actual damages can be calculated to a certain dollar amount. They include all those damages that the plaintiff directly suffered due to the slander. This may include lost wages, lost earning capacity or loss of business opportunities. These may include the actual amounts lost or the amounts that are likely to be lost because of the slander. To calculate lost earnings, the plaintiff can add up the wages that he or she lost from being out of work because of the slanderous statement. This also includes any employment benefits that were lost, such as using sick days or paid time off to deal with the slanderous statement. Lost earning capacity is more difficult to prove and generally requires expert testimony. An expert may have to testify about how the plaintiff’s diminished earning capacity will affect his or her lifetime earnings. For example, if a person was working a $100,000 job and the slander caused him or her to be fired and to be ostracized from the position and was only able to earn $50,000, the annual amount of damages would start at $50,000. Reasonable pay increases based on the individual’s employment record would also be taken into consideration, as well as his or her prospects for promotion. Inflation may also be taken into consideration. An expert may have to evaluate a variety of evidence in order to determine the difference between the plaintiff’s projected earnings before the slander in order to compare these with the projected earnings after the slander. The economic expert may examine the plaintiff’s tax returns, the current and projected economic state and the industry in which the plaintiff is employed and was employed. If the plaintiff was a business owner, his or her losses may include the loss of existing clients and the lost business opportunities. Former clients may be called to testify that they stopped doing business because of the slander. An economic expert may be necessary to testify about the economic impact of such lost business opportunities and business goodwill.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— The 2020 presidential race hits Illinois: Delegate petition drives kick off Oct. 5 Though the Democratic presidential campaigns are focusing on the early state votes in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada in February, the contenders can’t ignore Illinois because the March 17 presidential primary comes early enough that it may make a difference. – Lynn Sweet
https://chicago.suntimes.com/columnists/2019/9/18/20873191/2020-presidential-race-hits-illinois-delegates-start-petition-drives-oct-5-biden
(FROM THE ARTICLE: That’s the reason all the major presidential contenders must pay attention to Illinois when it comes to organizing delegate slates for each of the 18 congressional districts in Illinois. The Democrats, unlike the Republicans, insist on diverse slates, and have a lot of rules to make sure the slates are balanced for, among other factors, gender, race, national origin, sexual orientation and religion, with all this spelled out in the 47 pages of the Democratic Party of Illinois delegate selection plan.)

We give God thanks for that.” Cathy’s comments led to calls for boycotts and pledges by mayors in Boston and Chicago to oppose new restaurants opening in their cities. That, in turn, led Mike Huckabee to launch a Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day on Aug. 1, 2012. Hundreds of thousands of customers took part, and the chain broke sales records for a single day.)

https://energynews.us/2019/09/16/midwest/illinois-marijuana-growers-will-face-energy-efficiency-and-reporting-rules/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Marijuana can be an energy intensive crop. The new electricity load to power lighting, heating and ventilation for indoor grow facilities has strained the grid and even caused blackouts in other places after it was legalized. The Illinois law seeks to avoid those problems by mandating efficiency standards and capping the amount of power used per square foot. Clean energy advocates said they were hopeful the law would lead other states to follow suit, though more work is needed between utilities and growers to manage power demand.)

https://medium.com/@tonipreckwinkle_95808/advancing-racial-equity-in-cook-county-closing-the-gap-through-policy-and-practice-9b28a5bd1b38
(FROM THE STATEMENT: In America, the playing field has never — been — level. If you are a woman, if you are Black, if you are Latinx, if you have a disability, if you speak another language, if you were born in another country — in other words, if you are most of the population of Cook County — the playing field has never been level. So instead of using the principle of equality, government must instead focus on equity.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— ERIKA HAROLD, the former GOP attorney general candidate, is not going to run for Rep. John Shimkus’ seat next year. A source close to Harold told Playbook: “She’s not running. It’s not the right time for Erika.” Harold was seen as a shoo-in for the 54th congressional district, having secured 44 percent of the vote in that district when she ran against Attorney General Kwame Raoul last year. Shimkus surprised Republicans when he announced a few weeks ago that he wouldn’t seek re-election. There was an initial scramble for the seat, but now it looks like only state Sen. Jason Plummer (54th) is still considering a run. No word yet if/when he’ll jump in. – Shia Kapos

I do not want anyone to pay me because I do not want anyone to call my tunes. I do not put GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and send them out to “make money.” I put the emails together and send them out to promote religious, conservative, and Republican principles. https://www.editorandpublisher.com/columns/shoptalk-google-facebook-should-pay-for-news-they-use/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The good news is that somebody is once again making money from journalism. The bad news is that it’s not those who are doing the actual work of producing journalism; instead, it’s Google and Facebook, which have figured out how to “monetize” the publication of news. A recent report in a study for the News Media Alliance holds that Google made $4.7 billion from the work of news publishers in 2018 through advertising linked to its search engine results and its Google News page. Journalists ought to see some of that revenue, argues David Chavern, the president and chief executive of the alliance, which represents 2,000 U.S. newspapers. The tech companies “make money off the arrangement,” Chavern said in the New York Times, “and there needs to be a better outcome for news publishers.”)

The operation run by conservative operatives has reportedly scoured more than a decade of social media history from reporters who are seen as hostile towards Trump, in order to find potentially damaging posts that can be used against them in the court of public opinion. https://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/24/us/the-new-couples-next-door-gay-and-straight.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mark Demich and Kevin Hengst, the couple across the street, are not actually married. Still, in the seven years they have lived in this Chicago suburb they have become like the Buckinghams, the Therrons, the Siconolfis — just another young family in the neighborhood, socializing porch to porch on summer evenings. Choosing the suburbs over the city, Mr. Demich and Mr. Hengst feared they would be The Gay Couple. But even in Wheaton — the home of an evangelical Christian college that until last year prohibited drinking and dancing, the seat of a reliably Republican county — they have found plenty of company. Sixty gay men and lesbians turned out for a wine-tasting a few weeks ago. About 30 played softball at a local park on a recent Saturday. . .In Wheaton, Mr. Demich, 42, said he liked the diversity. ”Of families,” he explained, after a brief pause. ”As opposed to city culture, where everything is around gay life, gay events. That’s not really the way America lives.” When he and Mr. Hengst decided to move to the suburbs, they told their real estate agent, ”Anything but Wheaton,” knowing its conservative reputation. Then they found the perfect house. They hung out a Gay Pride flag, and the neighbors invited them to a block party. The couple said they would bring fruit salad. ”Everyone broke out laughing,” Mr. Weinberg, a contractor, recalled. ”They were making fun of it, which went over well.” Neighborhood children have confronted the couple with questions: Do you two sleep together? Do you have wives? Their parents cringe, but also say they consider themselves, and their children, fortunate. ”Growing up in a good Catholic family, I didn’t even know about anything like this,” Ms. Weinberg said. ”It wasn’t thrown in front of me. These kids, if they don’t see it now, they’re going to see it soon. Living on a block like this is more the real world.” A few blocks over the train tracks, Ladd McClurg and Brad Ogilvie had similar concerns about moving to Wheaton when Mr. Ogilvie accepted a job in town. Mr. McClurg, who grew up in the Mormon faith, being taught that gays were sinners, said he arrived with ”almost a visceral disdain” for Wheaton’s many churches and their members. ”I learned to discover they’re not all bigoted,” Mr. McClurg said. ”There are a lot more variations on the middle out here than I was willing to give credit for.” Still, gays here say they step carefully to avoid causing offense. Betty Burns and Lisa Rechkemmer say they would never hold hands or hang out a pride flag for fear of upsetting their good relations with the neighbors. Mr. Ogilvie and Mr. McClurg display the flag, but resist the urge to hold hands unless they visit the city. One lesbian in Wheaton talked about how accepting her neighbors were, but did not want to be identified by name because she feared the kind of hate calls she and her partner received when they moved in two years ago. Mr. Demich and Mr. Hengst had to go to six or seven churches before they found one that did not preach that homosexuality is a sin. The church they chose, St. Paul Lutheran, had declared itself ”open and affirming” to gays five years ago, but only after a struggle. The decision was prompted not by gay parishioners — there were none at the time — but by a young man who had been baptized and confirmed in the church who died of AIDS. ”It lifted the issue,” said Marianne Avery, a member of the church council that debated the change. ”It was, ‘This is our children, this is not about letting someone in.’ ” Still, a handful of members left. ”What if they show up in drag?” the Rev. Melody Eastman, the pastor, recalled one woman asking.)
