Ever-increasingly, they hint/imply/argue/shout that Republicans like Ives and me are haters, White supremacists, Nazis, KKK members, racists, sexists, bigots and even worse things.)

— Rauner clinches GOP Cook County party endorsements – Marni Pyke (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, to get reelected, Rauner and his supporters make it clear a) that they will officially strike the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and other planks in the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform and b) that they will banish from the IRP all those who support the aforesaid planks.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180205/rauner-clinches-gop-cook-county-party-endorsements
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Cook County Central Committee members endorsed Gov. Bruce Rauner Monday night over rival state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton. Rauner won 27 out of 30 townships, party officials said, and clinched a majority of Chicago wards. The decision heightens tensions between the two Republicans vying in the March 20 primary. Ives, a social conservative, has attacked Rauner as abandoning the party’s traditional values while the incumbent has largely ignored the Wheaton lawmaker, focusing his criticism on J.B. Pritzker, one of six Democrats seeking the nomination. “Ives is a strong advocate for conservative principles,” said Aaron Del Mar, Cook County Republican Central Committee deputy chairman. But Rauner has greater appeal statewide, he thinks. “He is the one candidate with the ability get elected and defeat the Democrats,” Del Mar said. An Ives ad that lambastes Rauner at what critics call the expense of transgender individuals, immigrants and women who have abortions, turned off some, Del Mar added. “We’re not in Kansas,” he said. “It’s not truly representative of Illinois Republican Party, we need to be the party of the big tent.” Ives has been undaunted by the loss of GOP establishment endorsements, saying some Republicans are beholden to investment banker Rauner because he has donated substantial amounts to the party. She received an endorsement from the Wheeling Township Republican organization last month. Cook County represents the largest number of Republicans in Illinois.)

What did Rauner’s Illinois Republican Party (IRP) do to encourage a Republican to run against Art Jones in the 3rd Congressional District? One could argue that to get Rauner’s support, you have to reject the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and many other planks in the IRP platform.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republican Party executive director Drew Collins told the Sun-Times in a statement, “going forward, the Illinois Republican Party will explore all options to oppose Mr. Jones’ candidacy — whether that be supporting an independent candidate for IL-03 after the primary, encouraging a write-in campaign, and potentially other options. Nazis have no place in our nation’s democracy, and to that end, we will continue to vehemently oppose everything Mr. Jones stands for.” Illinois Republican Bruce Rauner, up for re-election and facing a primary challenge from state Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, on Monday condemned Jones. “There is no room for Neo Nazis in American politics. I condemn this man in the strongest possible terms,” Rauner said in a statement. What remains to be seen is whether the Illinois Republican Party, a part of Rauner’s political operation, or Rauner will actually find a write-in candidate and bankroll a campaign. The Republican Jewish Coalition chair also floated on Monday the possibility of a write-in candidate surfacing to run against Jones.)

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/columnist/2018/02/04/6-ways-measure-if-your-retirement-plan-track/300912002/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: 2. Determine what you’ll need annually Don’t use rules of thumb like, “Plan on needing 70% to 80% of your current income.” That silly myth comes from presuming retired folk slow down and spend less. Few do. Some travel, adopt hobbies and finance grandchildren. But almost all spend unexpected sums on medical comforts not covered by health insurance. List all your current expenses, separating them into “basic” and “discretionary” buckets. Food, shelter and utilities are basic. Hobbies and entertainment aren’t. Start bucket three: new expenses you’ll likely incur during retirement, like trips to see the grandkids and those health-comfort costs. Then use an online inflation calculator to total what it all costs when you plan to retire. (This one is good). If you totaled $75,000 “2018” dollars and want to retire in 20 years, you’ll likely need more than $135,000 annually, minus Social Security and any employer pension plans you have.)

http://abc7chicago.com/politics/ill-gop-chairman-calls-for-ives-to-take-controversial-ad-off-the-air/3030306/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Appearing at Saturday’s gala for Equality Illinois, Gov. Rauner did not directly address the ad, but his presence and a $25,000 donation to the state’s LGBTQ civil rights organization did the talking. “Diana and I believe that fairness is in the DNA of the State of Illinois. The proof of that is in your work,” said Gov. Rauner at the gala. The governor was just one of nearly 100 elected officials at the event, which has become a veritable who’s who of Illinois politics. “LGBTQ equality is not a partisan issue. What we hope to hear from our speakers and our leaders is ‘We stand with you. Your full equality is consistent with the values of Illinois. We won’t go back,'” said Brian Johnson with Equality Illinois. Ives campaign stands by the ad, insisting that the commercial represents and quote, “a fair and accurate representation” of Rauner’s policy choices. It remains to be seen, whether pressure from the state’s republican leaders will change their minds. For now, a 30-second and 60 second version of the ad continues to run.)

The organization supports Civil rights work for the LGBTQ community. Mayor Emanuel and several Democratic candidates for governor were among the politicians packing the Hilton’s grand ballroom. Governor Rauner did not stop to answer questions from reporters and he was heckled a bit during very brief remarks. A spokesperson for the Ives campaign says Ives is traveling downstate today, and She is not pulling the ad, because she is not intimidated by Gov. Rauner and what she called his paid party mouthpieces.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Suburban Republicans backing primary challenger Jeanne Ives in her bid to unseat Gov. Bruce Rauner are defending the Wheaton lawmaker who faces intense criticism for a television ad that state party leaders and Rauner allies have denounced as racist and homophobic. Lawmakers on Saturday stood by their endorsements of Ives amid the backlash over the statewide ad that began airing this weekend, but suggested the spot would provide campaign fodder for her opponents who cast Ives as a divisive social conservative and a longshot in the March primary. . .State Rep. Barb Wheeler, a Crystal Lake Republican, called the ad cringe-worthy and ridiculous. She said Ives still has her vote, but urged her messages to stick to what Wheeler considers her political strengths as a fiscal policy wonk. “I have been in the General Assembly with her since 2013. And if I believed in my heart of hearts that she was a racist or a hater, I wouldn’t have supported her in the first place,” Wheeler said. “She is right on the issues. I don’t always agree with the way she messages.” Wheeling Township Republican Committeeman Ruth O’Connell argued the ad appeals to Ives’ conservative base. “It is going to create talk, and the ad will bring the attention to the voters, and I think a lot of them care about the issues she covered in the ad,” she said. . .The Ives’ campaign dismissed Schneider’s statement, calling the Illinois GOP an arm of Rauner’s campaign because the organization is almost entirely funded by Rauner, a wealthy former private equity investor. “Rauner betrayed Illinois conservatives. He and his paid-for mouthpieces don’t like his betrayals being illustrated and his radical left-wing social agenda being exposed,” campaign spokeswoman Kathleen Murphy said. Rauner signed a bill last year making it easier for transgender people to change the gender listed on their birth certificates. He has not signed a bill on restroom access for transgender individuals. The release of the ad comes as Rauner and Ives battle for endorsements in the suburbs. The Cook County Republican Central Committee votes on Monday on who to back in the gubernatorial race. . .State Rep. Tom Morrison, a Palatine Republican, said the ad was “jarring,” but meant to “stimulate conversation.” “That’s what campaigns are about,” said Morrison, an Ives supporter. “It’s discussing candidates. It’s discussing issues, and I think this ad will spark some discussions on specific bills cited in the ad.”)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/news/ct-nvs-dupage-mobile-spay-neuter-vehicle-st-0126-20180202-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: DuPage County officials are thrilled that their animal care and control department soon will make use of a new mobile spay and neutering van. The 26-foot conversion vehicle will be outfitted with a number of features to allow veterinary services to be provided at remote locations, similar to a bookmobile or bloodmobile. “This is going to be a game-changer that allows us to save more animals and better serve the community,” said Dr. Barbara Hanek, administrator veterinarian. With ongoing concerns about pet overpopulation, a mobile spay and neuter vehicle can serve low-income residents who may not have the ability to drive to the animal care facility at the county campus in Wheaton. “Also, our spay and neuter program is free of charge for DuPage residents who qualify,” said Kristie Lecaros, humane initiatives and special projects manager. Valued at $250,000, the van is made possible by a donation from the Brooks McCormick Jr. Trust for Animal Rights Law and Policy, which will be honored at the Feb. 27 county board meeting. “We’re an open admission shelter in the county,” said Brian Krajewski, chairman of the board’s animal care and control committee. “That means we take in every animal and try to find them a home. But we also do education, and this new van will help us to get out to many events, highlight animal rescues, and help us do some medical procedures like feral fixes, where we spay and neuter, microchip and vaccinate for rabies.” Free spay and neutering is available for all pets in DuPage County households where the owner has an Illinois LINK card that indicates low-income assistance. Officials said the van will be delivered in May. One side of it opens to reveal cages that may contain pets available for immediate adoption. Inside, the van will have two surgical tables, countertop work space and veterinary pharmacy supplies. “It’s also going to have a dental unit and an x-ray machine,” Hanek said. “We don’t even have an x-ray machine here at the main building. That’s a $50,000 piece of equipment right there.” The donation of $300,000 and a statement were facilitated by volunteer Amanda Yancey. “The Brooks McCormick Jr. Trust for Animal Rights Law and Policy is a progressive think-tank for national animal welfare,” the donor wrote. “… Amanda has seen the improvements at DuPage County Animal Care & Control. To further the momentum, the exciting possibility of a specialty veterinary vehicle is seen as revolutionary for the animals of DuPage and beyond.” Hanek said veterinary medicine at shelters has shifted from a philosophy of addressing overpopulation with euthanasia “to now using more proactive measures like targeted spaying and neutering. That’s what this new van will help us do.” Hanek met with Kane County animal control officials who demonstrated the use of geo-coding to map locations throughout the county prone to feral and stray animals. “From that data, we can then determine the most effective areas where we can target our spay and neuter van,” Hanek said. “We want to be more proactive to provide our services in the areas where they’re needed.” A veterinary surgeon has been designated for the van, which will travel to a remote location at least once a week, officials said. “We should be able to do up to 30 spays and neuters per day,” Hanek said. “It all depends on the amount of time, whether it’s neutering a male cat versus spaying a large dog.” All pets under treatment are implanted with a microchip to identify the animal and the owner. Walk-ins may obtain microchips for their pets for $30. The goal is for police departments to be able to scan a chip and return the animal to its owner. “We also are very indebted to other rescue groups that have helped us in the past,” Hanek said. “With the new vehicle, we now can come out and do procedures for them. The whole idea is to fill a void for pet owners who can’t afford veterinary care and to lessen the burden on the animal shelter system.” DuPage County Chairman Dan Cronin is an animal enthusiast who has two dogs, two cats and a horse, all spayed and neutered. “I think this is a great idea,” he said. “You’ve got to take the services to the neighborhoods, which is a much more effective way to get to the overpopulation of feral cats and other animals, particularly low-income areas. I encourage all the residents to participate and start looking out for the van.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Lately Facebook appears to be making particularly aggressive moves against freedom of speech by conservatives. Particularly targeted are those who express views that offer facts and reasoning which contradict the specious Constitutional jurisprudence that demands respect for various gender claims, and equal public regard for a variety of sexual practices. Yet these demands deny or disparage God-endowed unalienable rights, attributes of humanity (like the sexual distinction for purposes of procreation) that are necessarily antecedent to all human laws and constitutions. Moreover, as the term “unalienable” plainly requires, people retain such rights no matter what human laws or edicts purport to gainsay them. . .Such are the forces now at work at Facebook and other such social networking businesses, whose commerce is, or else includes, communication. They mean to suppress speech that challenges any prejudices not their own. But isn’t the United States still governed by its laws and Constitution? Aren’t businesses that accommodate public exchanges and conveyances still subject to the Civil Rights Act? Instead of just publicizing Facebook’s growing abuses, isn’t it long past time for the victims of its attacks on free speech to seek such justice as that law provides? . . . Two things are urgently needed: 1) An avalanche of formal complaints to appropriate Civil Rights Offices if the US Government, and attendant lawsuits against Facebook’s attacks on freedom of speech; and 2) promotion of a competitive alternative(s) to Facebook committed to respecting the logic and purpose of the U.S. Constitution’s enumeration of freedom of speech in the Bill of Rights, as well as the Ninth Amendment’s language prohibiting any construction of the enumeration of rights that denies or disparages rights retained by the people. These latter include, foremost of all, the God-endowed, unalienable rights whose surrender entails the loss of humanity itself.)

Rauner for things like “paying for my abortions” and also has a man dressed as a woman saying: “Thank you for signing legislation that lets me use the girls’ bathroom.” As I write this, it’s unclear if that explosive ad will air, but if it does it will certainly get noticed. A week of Chicago broadcast TV ads costs about $660,000, and Illinois has a ton of other media markets from Rockford all the way down to the Kentucky border. The last public poll in this race showed that 68 percent of likely Republican primary voters had never even heard of Jeanne Ives. Gov. Rauner was leading Ives by 45 points in that survey and he is refusing to ever debate her again. So, it’s gonna take a lot more than a few thousand Facebook views, a day of positive earned media coverage and a million bucks to put Rep. Ives over the top. A lot more. Weirder stuff has most certainly happened in politics. But people should take a breath and see how this all plays out before making any sort of predictions.)

RED STATE
— Axios Posts A Racist And Sexist Job Announcement (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, employers make it clear that they do not want to hire, retain, or promote those who are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, draft avoiders, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
https://www.redstate.com/streiff/2018/01/27/axios-posts-racist-sexist-job-announcement/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: This ad is notable for a couple of things. First, it is illegal. Second, it is a manager saying I don’t really care if you have skills, what I really want is people with the correct melanin, genitalia, and sexual dysfunction or deviance. And take a close look at that picture. Do you really think women or homosexuals are UNDER-represented? Now, apparently, lawyers have got involved and Axios has taken down the ad. But they can’t get rid of the problem. Now any white male who answers the ad knows that he’s only being considered to the extent necessary to avoid a lawsuit. And they’ve gone a long way towards creating what would be called a “hostile work environment” for normal, white male employees because they’ve just been told there are too many of them. Full disclosure: I don’t really object to companies being able to hire whoever the hell they wish and state it up front. It saves a lot of time and effort on the part of the company and job applicants. But that isn’t the law and if the law is to have any meaning whatsoever it must protect everyone, not just a chosen few. The fact that Axios feels so comfortable in advertising its racism and its sexism shows just how corrupting the drive to achieve “diversity,” whatever that is, has become.)

NEW YORK TIMES
— Why I Am Leaving the F.B.I. – Josh Campbell (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those Democrats who ran GAO 1980-1997, IRS 1971-1980, and the Post Office 1966-1969 who worked the hardest to get rid of me. They put their Democrat partisan politics above everything.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/02/opinion/leaving-the-fbi.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: One of the greatest honors of my life was walking across the stage at the F.B.I. Academy and receiving my special agent badge from the director at the time, Robert Mueller. After 21 weeks of intensive training, my class swore an oath and became federal agents entrusted with the solemn duty of protecting Americans and upholding the Constitution. After more than a decade of service, which included investigating terrorism, working to rescue kidnapping victims overseas and being special assistant to the director, I am reluctantly turning in my badge and leaving an organization I love. Why? So I can join the growing chorus of people who believe that the relentless attacks on the bureau undermine not just America’s premier law enforcement agency but also the nation’s security. My resignation is painful, but the alternative of remaining quiet while the bureau is tarnished for political gain is impossible. A small number of my current and retired colleagues have said that we should simply keep our heads down until the storm passes. I say this with the greatest respect: They are wrong. If those who know the agency best remain silent, it will be defined by those with partisan agendas. F.B.I. agents are dogged people who do not care about the direction of political winds. But to succeed in their work, they need public backing. Scorched-earth attacks from politicians with partisan goals now threaten that support, raising corrosive doubts about the integrity of the F.B.I. that could last for generations.)

— Yes, You Can Find a Financial Planner Even if You’re Not Rich – Ron Lieber (DIERSEN: What qualifications do you have to be a financial planner? GAO audits the federal government. I worked for GAO for almost 18 years 1980-1997, a) the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently, $96,403-$125,325, b) the last 9 years on audits of federal financial industry regulators, and c) the 3 years before that on audits of IRS. I worked for IRS for almost 9 years 1971-1980, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880. I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979. I passed the Certified Internal Auditor Examination on my first attempt in 1981. I became a licensed CPA in 1981, a Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, a Certified Government Financial Manager in 1994, a Certified Financial Services Auditor in 1996, and a Forensic Accountant in 1997. I earned a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU in 1970, an MBA from Loyola in 1976, a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, and a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997. I served on the Executive Committee of the Association of Government Accountants 1983-1996.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/02/your-money/financial-planner.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: To get this far, they’ve sought out financial planners who could be content with a mere low-six-figure income. If 80 clients pay $150 a month, XY advisers can earn gross revenues of $144,000, though XY charges member financial planners $409 per month.)
— Trump’s Vision for Vocational Education Gets a Tepid Reception – Erica L. Green (DIERSEN: Were you considered to be college material? While I attended Crete-Monee High School 1962-1966, I took college preparatory courses notwithstanding the fact that many, if not most, if not virtually everyone at the time viewed me as NOT being “college material.” Neither of my parents had attended college. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I spent my junior and senior years and the summer in between washing dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights. I just barely made into the top 20% of my class, my ACT score was only 24, I was draft bait, my eyesight could not be corrected to 20/20, I had partial red/green color blindness, and I had Osgood-Schlatter disease (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgood%E2%80%93Schlatter_disease). He has sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions requesting that his office launch an investigation. “I don’t know that he will or won’t. But I believe that he should and that’s because no one locally here will take this on,” said Gary Grasso, R-Candidate for Attorney General. The Department of Justice could not immediately confirm receipt of the letter. Grasso pointed to published reports which have criticized Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios for giving tax breaks to the rich who use politically-connected law firms to get their assessments lowered at the expense of the poor.)

RIPON ADVANCE
— Republican-led House oversight subcommittee, House colleagues urge IRS reform
https://riponadvance.com/featured/republican-led-house-oversight-subcommittee-house-colleagues-urge-irs-reform/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Among the witnesses testifying before the subcommittee were U.S. Reps. Peter Roskam (R-IL) and Jim Renacci (R-OH), who each outlined two bills they separately introduced and would like to have members consider. Rep. Roskam, for instance, last August introduced the Free File Permanence Act of 2017, H.R. 3641, which has been referred to the House Ways and Means Committee. The bill would require the U.S. Treasury Department to continue operating the IRS Free File Program and to work with state government agencies and the private sector to expand and enhance the program, which offers free commercial-type online individual income tax preparation and electronic filing services to the lowest 70 percent of taxpayers by income, according to the bill’s summary. “As an added bonus, the program actually saves the federal government an estimated $13 million a year because electronic filings are less expensive for the IRS to process than paper versions,” said Roskam. The bipartisan bill has 123 cosponsors, including subcommittee chairman Jenkins and subcommittee members Bishop, Walorski, LaHood, and Curbelo. Rep. Roskam also introduced the bipartisan Restraining Excessive Seizure of Property through the Exploitation of Civil Asset Forfeiture Tools Act, H.R. 1843, on March 30, 2017, which would limit IRS authority to seize the funds of law-abiding citizens under false pretenses, said Roskam. Multiple incidences uncovered by House Oversight Subcommittee members showed that the IRS has abused its authority “and was stealing legally earned funds solely because the owners ran afoul of structuring laws,” he said. An identical bill, S. 824, was introduced in the Senate by U.S. Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) on April 4, 2017. Roskam’s bill passed the House on a voice vote in September and now awaits consideration by the Senate Finance Committee.)

WGN RADIO
— What can we expect from the next legislative session in Springfield? – PETER ZIMMERMAN (DIERSEN: If I was still the TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, everyone could expect and I would deliver a breakfast meeting the third Saturday of every month except August and December, a picnic every August, and a Christmas party every December. Everyone could expect and I would deliver speakers at those events that would include candidates in upcoming elections. Currently, for example, Rauner, Ives, Sanguinetti, Morthland, Harold, Grasso, Diganvker, Jhingan, Stella, Vlakancic, Minor, Grant, Byrne, Kinzler, Orozco, Zito, Khouri, Mendrick, Bibbiano, Tornatore, DeMichele, Gavanes, Hart, Abbott, Tully, McGowen, Almiron, Eckhoff, Zaruba, Tatro, Chinchilla, Wiley, Zay, McQuade, Illinois Republican Party State Central Committee candidates, DuPage County Republican Central Committee candidates, Republican township party candidates, etc. One could argue that incumbent Republicans would be far more likely to want to get rid of TAPROOT because TAPROOT, unlike many other organizations, gave challengers an opportunity to speak. While the West Suburban Patriots organization in Wheaton has barred the following Republican elected officials from speaking at its events because they have endorsed Rauner and Sanguinetti, under my chairmanship, they would be welcome to speak at TAPROOT events, provided that they agreed to take questions from the audience: Dan Cronin, Steve Chirico, Jim Durkin, John Curran, Patti Bellock, Grant Wehrli, Christine Winger, Bob Berlin, Fred Bucholz, Gwen Henry, Paul Hinds, Richard Jorgenson, Greg Hart, Brian Krajewski, Sean Noonan, Don Puchalski, Kevin Wiley, James Zay, Rich Veenstra, Richard Irvin, Chuck Nelson, Kevin Wallace, Franco Coladipietro, Len Austin, Martin Tully, Steven Morley, Rodney Craig, Jeff Pruyn, John Egofske, Ken McClafferty, Kevin Coyne, Ruben Pineda, Noreen Ligino-Kubinski, Michael Gresk, Todd Scalzo, Frank Trilla, and Jim Mathieson.)

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20180130/BLOGS02/180139983/jeanne-ives-is-vulnerable-if-gov-rauner-dares-to-attack
(FROM THE ARTICLE: You want to avoid that fate, governor? Then quit whining about Mike Madigan and start acting like you would against any Democratic foe: Attack. Engage. Contrast your views and record with hers. There’s plenty of material to use, if Rauner chooses to do so. For instance, Ives told Crain’s editorial board last week she’d balance the state budget in large part by shifting the tax load to the people of Chicago and suburban Cook County. She’d do so by slashing aid to Chicago Public Schools under the state’s new formula, and by working to end the Obamacare expansion, which shifted to the federal government and, to a lesser degree, the state hundreds of millions of dollars a year in costs for caring for indigent patients at Cook County’s network of hospitals and clinics. Yes, that might mean a local tax hike, she conceded. Are you listening, Governor? Your opponent seems to favor a tax hike in Cook County, which, despite its reputation of being a Democratic stronghold, cast more than a third of the vote statewide in the 2014 GOP primary—a cool 428,345. When pressed if dropping Obamacare might also result in a reduction of health care to people without the funds to pay for it, Ives notes they run a nice voluntary dental clinic in DuPage County. Now, there’s a campaign plank that will sell with moderate voters, not only in Cook County but also in the five suburban collar counties, which provided another quarter of the statewide vote in the 2014 Republican primary. It has a real ring, doesn’t it? “Let ’em go to the free clinic.” Of course, most voters don’t know that Ives said that, because Rauner hasn’t told them. Over at the Tribune, Ives had another budget solution. If employee groups won’t cave with financial concessions, “lay them off,” she said. Right! Start with the state troopers and prison guards, and work your way down to university professors and doctors in the health department. The latter can use their free time to volunteer at the community clinic! Of course, Ives could spark another crisis like the one that left Illinois without a budget for two years. That certainly was a big success. Ives, at the Trib, also bragged about being one of a handful of lawmakers to vote against extending the state’s Edge payroll incentive program to woo jobs. I understand her zeal that lower taxes for everybody is the libertarian gold standard. But in a country in which almost every state offers something like Edge, unilateral disarmament would leave Illinois even worse off. Guv, you might consider communicating Ives’ stance on Edge to people who work for Amazon in Will County, Sears in Hoffman Estates and Ford at the Torrence Avenue plant, all of which received Edge. And you might cc: everyone who hopes to land a job at Amazon’s possible HQ2 here. There’s other material out there, material that could be effective not only in a general election against a Democrat, but in a primary against Ives. Sure, doing so would provoke some conservative voters who might not come home in November. But I suspect most of them already are mad over Rauner’s actions on abortion and so-called sanctuary cities. The question this fall: Would they rather have a liberal—or very liberal—Democrat in office? “I think Rauner’s folks are making a mistake. They need to take her straight on,” says one top party insider, who asks not to be named. In this predominantly blue state, that insider adds, the message ought to be: “A vote for Jeanne Ives is a vote for (Illinois House Speaker) Mike Madigan to draw the new legislative map that will be in place until 2031.” That source is right. You want to keep your job, Governor? It’s time to start acting like you mean it.)

The state rule, which went into effect Jan. 1, requires a condo association to provide a list of contact information—including mailing address, phone number and email address—on all unit owners to any owner who requests it. — Bill to evade President Trump’s tax overhaul gets watered down – LIAM DILLON
https://www.latimes.com/politics/essential/la-pol-ca-essential-politics-updates-legislation-to-help-californians-evade-1517344326-htmlstory.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A bid to help Californians dodge the effects of President Trump’s tax plan has gotten a little less generous. State Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) has changed his bill allowing those who donate to a new state-run nonprofit to receive relief on both their state and federal taxes. In the new version of the bill, those who give to the nonprofit will reduce their state income taxes by 85% of the donation plus receive a federal charitable deduction. Previously, De León was aiming to provide a dollar-for-dollar reduction in state taxes for those who donated. But tax law experts working on the bill with De León worried that amount could cause the federal Internal Revenue Service to crack down on the plan, and advised that a lower percentage was more legally defensible. “The proposed 85% tax credit … will give Californians the opportunity to fund programs they care deeply about while at the same time shielding them from some of the most egregious elements of Trump’s tax reform plan,” De León said in a statement. De León, who also is running for U.S. Senate, introduced his bill after Trump and the GOP-led Congress passed a federal tax overhaul that capped state and local tax deductions at $10,000, an amount that disproportionately affects high-tax states like California. De León’s measure aims to allow Californians who previously used the state and local tax deduction — primarily single- and joint-filers reporting annual incomes of $100,000 or more — to instead take advantage of the charitable deduction.)

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— QUESTION: If you are a Republican in Illinois, are the following legitimate reasons to NOT support a Republican candidate in a primary election? – Dave Diersen
https://gopillinois.com
— The candidate lacks education, experience, professional certifications, etc. needed for the office sought
— The candidate’s opponent(s) is doing better in the polls
— The candidate’s opponent(s) has more money
— You believe the candidate’s opponent(s) has a better chance of winning in the general election
— You believe that the candidate has little or no chance of winning in the general election
— The candidate rejects planks in the Republican Party platform and/or the Illinois Republican Party platform
— The candidate has said and/or done things that hint/imply/argue/shout that the candidate does not want your support
— Those who the candidate support and/or those who support the candidate have said and/or done things that hint/imply/argue/shout that the candidate does not want your support
— The candidate, those who the candidate supports, and/or those who the support the candidate hint/imply/argue/shout that they have a low opinion of you and/or those who share your demographics, values, priorities, etc.
— The candidate, those who the candidate supports, and/or those who the support the candidate demonize, denigrate, and condemn you and others who they cannot manipulate/dominate
— The candidate, those who the candidate supports, and/or those who the support the candidate have threatened you if you support the candidate’s opponent(s)

My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that any Republican candidate who I might support in contested Republican primary election is “too conservative” to win in the general election, and therefore, no Republican candidate should seek or accept my support in a contested Republican primary election.

BREITBART
— Conservative Jeanne Ives Gets Massive Fundraising Boost in Illinois Governor’s Race – JOEL B. POLLAK
http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/01/30/conservative-jeanne-ives-gets-massive-fundraising-boost-illinois-governors-race/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Conservative State Representative Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) received a massive donation on Monday from Lake Forest businessman Richard Uihlein, who formerly backed incumbent Republican Governor Bruce Rauner. Crain’s Chicago Business reports that Uihlein wrote Ives’s insurgent campaign a $500,000 check, giving it a boost even as Rauner attempts to look past the March 20 primary and towards likely Democratic nominee J.B. Pritzker. Uihlen’s defection from Rauner may also be a sign of things to come among conservative voters, who may be attracted to a strong alternative. Rauner won in 2014 on an agenda of reform, but has failed to deliver. He vetoed a tax increase by was overridden by the state’s Democrat-dominated legislature. Worse, from a conservative point of view, he broke a key pledge and signed a law expanding state funding of abortions. He also signed legislation making Illinois a “sanctuary state.” Ives is a solid conservative who graduated from West Point and served overseas in the U.S. Army. Her only political weakness is her lack of name recognition outside of her district in the western suburbs of Chicago. She trails Rauner by a wide margin in early polls. However, as Crain’s notes, having a sizable campaign war chest will help her advertise. Recently, Ives told Breitbart News: “Any time conservative voters know that there’s an opponent to Bruce Rauner, they’re motivated to come to the polls and work for me and vote for me. And that’s because my record is one of conservatism, and they are very upset at sanctuary policies, taxpayer funding of abortion, junk science on transgender issues, [and] bailing out Chicago schools with our school money.” Pritzker, like Rauner, is a billionaire with little prior formal political experience, although he has close ties to the state’s Democratic Party establishment.)

DAILY HERALD
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD WITH COLOR PHOTOS OF IVES AND RAUNER: How the suburbs could decide the Rauner, Ives primary – Marni Pyke (DIERSEN: According to this article, DuPage County leaders who support Rauner over Ives said “I suspect there are some single-issue Republicans that will (endorse Ives) as well, but mainstream Republicans are behind Rauner all the way” and “the talk on the street is he’ll beat Jeanne and Jeanne will pick up that hard-core base.” Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can/will defend/advance their platform. In Illinois, if you state that you are Republican, but you fail/refuse to defend/advance the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform, you are not a Republican, you are a RINO, a Democrat plant, a Libertarian plant, or a Green plant. You should not seek or hold any kind of government or political office in Illinois as a Republican. Those who can/will defend/advance the IRP platform endorse Ives. Those who state that they are Republican, but fail/refuse to defend/advance the IRP platform endorse Rauner. I served on the 2008 IRP Platform and Resolutions Committee. The IRP’s 2012 and 2016 platforms are little changed from IRP’s 2008 platform. Needless-to-say, I want to serve on IRP’s 2020 Platform and Resolutions Committee. If Rauner wins the primary election, to win the general election, he will have to stress the planks in the IRP platform that he rejects, that is, he will have to destroy the IRP. Most commonly, RINOs, Democrat plants, Libertarian plants, and Green plants reject the traditional family, right to life, and immigration planks. Most commonly, they promote dependency on government, dependency on charity, LGBTQ activity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, booze, gambling, pot, and other vices, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, abolition of the First and Second Amendments, and even worse things. Most commonly, they are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-draft avoiders, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180130/how-the-suburbs-could-decide-the-rauner-ives-primary
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Rep. Jeanne Ives’ candidacy continues to roil Republicans as many in the GOP establishment embrace Gov. Bruce Rauner as their best hope in the general election, while conservatives dig in for the challenger in the March 20 primary. And if recent events are any indication, much of the battle will be fought in the suburbs. At a Rauner pep rally with DuPage County GOP leaders a week ago, some Republicans admitted to angst over how Ives, a social conservative from Wheaton, is splitting the party, although Rauner didn’t even mention her name. Instead, he said the real threat will come from Democrats in the November general election. “We can’t have Mike Madigan and J.B. Pritzker in total control,” Rauner said, referring to Illinois’ powerful House speaker and the Hyatt hotel heir who is one of six Democratic contenders for governor. Meanwhile, an undeterred Ives took the podium at Chicago’s Union League Club last week with her own posse of seven elected officials who back her candidacy. “It is unprecedented to have legislators in open revolt against the governor of their own party,” Ives said. The endorsement throwdown ramped up at Rauner’s event in Naperville, where DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin told party members in a private meeting “we’ve got to stick together” to re-elect the governor. “Nobody likes a primary,” Cronin said later. “We can ill afford to fight among ourselves.” Backing Rauner were 14 local mayors, countywide elected officials and four state senators and representatives. But not everyone’s on that bandwagon. While Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico hosted Rauner last week, two days later Naperville Township Assessor Warren Dixon was among those backing Ives. Likewise, state lawmakers Patti Bellock and (Peter) Breen represent neighboring districts in eastern DuPage County. She came out for Rauner and he for Ives. Said Chirico: “I suspect there are some single-issue Republicans that will (endorse Ives) as well, but mainstream Republicans are behind Rauner all the way. In my view, Gov. Rauner has the only realistic chance of winning as a Republican in the general election.” Breen, a Lombard state representative, said “our country was founded on a tradition of vigorous public debate. For these reasons, I’d respectfully contend that the greater good is best served by an open, robust contest for the Republican nomination for governor.” Ives has made some headway in Cook County with an endorsement by the Republicans of Wheeling Township organization. Rather than seeing Ives as a quixotic choice, Wheeling Township Committeeman Ruth O’Connell thinks Rauner “hasn’t accomplished anything” and Ives “has the better chance.” Ives’ opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage won’t sit well with the majority of Republicans in Cook and DuPage counties who are “strong fiscal conservatives and social moderates,” countered Aaron Del Mar, Cook County Republican Central Committee deputy chairman. Ives’ opposition to sanctuary cities also means Hispanic Republicans are with the incumbent, Northfield banker and Republican Joseph Gomez predicted. On the fiscal side, “there’s no doubt the Republican business community will be with Rauner,” Gomez said. The Cook County Central Committee votes on endorsements Feb. 5. “We’re the battleground,” Del Mar said. “I think (Ives will) do well in conservative areas and downstate. It will be uphill in Cook and DuPage.” Cook County lawmaker Tom Morrison of Palatine disagrees. “Consider the numbers of Republican congressmen and General Assembly members who are staying on the fence or actively speaking up for Rep. Ives,” he said. “By his own policy decisions, Bruce Rauner is a man without the base of support he needs to win in a general election.” Just-retired Addison Township Republican Chairman Pat Durante was shaken by Rauner’s signing a bill allowing for Medicaid to be used for abortions. But the veteran political observer said “the talk on the street is he’ll beat Jeanne and Jeanne will pick up that hard-core base.” Could Ives beat the odds? “Sure,” Durante said, “but she’ll need more money and the base needs to work for her.”)

Civil Service protections discouraged my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government from openly criticizing me because I am Republican, conservative, Protestant, White, male, old (born in 1948), non-poor, gun owner, 100% German American, my ancestors have been in America since the 1840s, etc. So instead, they criticized my job performance, my intelligence, my judgment, my motives, my accomplishments, my etc. They were especially furious when I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979 and when I passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981.)

http://www.truth-out.org/opinion/item/43348-when-it-comes-to-elections-there-are-more-options-than-endorsing-a-candidate

(FROM THE ARTICLE: To beat these incumbents took a variety of tactics, and the victories are in no way ours alone to claim. In both races, multiple local efforts formed sometimes intersecting and sometimes divergent forces aimed at taking down the incumbents. In Chicago, some groups focused on traditional phone and door-knocking outreach tactics on behalf of Alvarez’s challenger Kim Foxx. In Arizona, an organization received funding to send mailers targeting Republican voters to convince them that challenger Paul Penzone would do a better job at keeping them safer than his opponent. In contrast, each of us put our energies into grassroots campaigns that did not endorse anyone in the race. Instead, the #ByeAnita and #BaztaArpaio campaigns framed the races as watermark moments and motivated voters to set an example by taking down the incumbents for their racist behaviors. In these times, voters — especially voters of color — are cynical. (More eligible voters sat out the 2016 election, despite the stakes, than cast a ballot.) We would attribute this low turnout not only to extensive voter suppression efforts by the GOP, but also to decades of promises from Democrats who either fail to fulfill those promises, or campaign with the assumption that voters of color are a captive base. It’s created a broad disenchantment that any challenger has a hard time overcoming. Some candidates address this by continuing to count out or ignore segments of voters who are seen as notoriously hard to mobilize. Instead, they focus their efforts to tilt the turnout needle in their direction, aiming their messaging strictly at “high efficacy” or “reliable” voters. (Ironically, these “reliable” constituents are narrowly defined as people who have a history of turning out to vote in presidential and midterm elections. It isn’t defined as the Black women who reliably vote for Democrats at a much higher margin than any other demographic.) Others set up town halls and forums to get to know the candidates, particularly when they are lesser known than the incumbents.)

(FROM THE LETTER: U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois recent labeled President Donald Trump a draft dodger and implied that not serving in the military renders one incapable of insight on budgetary matters related to the Defense Department. Yes, Trump was deferred from military service when we had a draft, as were erstwhile President Bill Clinton and Vice President Dick Cheney. Our immediate past president, also from the Land of Lincoln, chose not to serve. Does Duckworth believe then that we should amend the Constitution so that only presidents who have worn the uniform can bear the commander-in-chief title? Animus directed at the orange-maned man in the Oval Office has reached manic proportions when senators can make ad hominem statements in lieu of addressing the issue of the moment. Duckworth may curry favor with other sufferers of Trump Distemper with her intemperate and illogical insults, but she leaves this disabled military veteran who did not vote for Trump displeased.)

http://nprillinois.org/post/state-federal-workforce-low#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The past year has been a tough one for the federal workforce. There was a hiring freeze at many agencies. For three days earlier this month, there was a government shutdown, leaving many workers to wonder when their next paycheck would arrive. Now, as President Trump prepares his first State of the Union address, one issue he is expected to take up, if not there then in his soon-to-follow proposed budget for fiscal year 2019, is reorganizing the federal bureaucracy. It’s a prospect that many in the federal workforce are dreading. Already, the state of the federal workforce is described as low. Morale “is the lowest that I have ever seen it in my just shy of 40 years” being a federal employee and working with federal employees, said J.David Cox Sr., president of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents some 700,000 federal workers. Agencies, he says, are already short-staffed, with vacancies unfilled, and Cox worries pay will be frozen. “We are concerned,” Cox says, “because reorganization means let’s figure out a way to cut or do more with less and do away with services that the American people want.”)

Well, it turns out that what makes male journalists the happiest is a pay cut, at least at the BBC. Among those receiving pay cuts are the presenters Jeremy Vine, Huw Edwards and John Humphrys. Mr. Vine described his decision to take a wage cut as a “no-brainer.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The next step is to determine what net annual income will be necessary upon retirement. The easiest method I have seen is simply to review a current pay stub and use the “net income” on the pay stub as a good starting point to know how much money is needed in retirement to maintain your lifestyle. I recommend this because some expenses may go up in retirement and some may go down. Many clients might not want to change their lifestyle in retirement, i.e., they want to live off the same income pre- and post-retirement. It’s all part of the discovery process, but I err on the side of overestimating these needs initially.)

— FROM THE ARTICLE: The Conference Committee adopted the seven-bracket approach of the Senate bill and adopted rates ranging from 10% on taxable income not over $9,525 for individuals ($19,050 for married couples filing jointly (MFJ) to a maximum of 37% for taxable income over $500,000 for individuals ($600,000 for MFJ). The Conference Committee bill therefore imposes a marriage penalty on married couples filing jointly. (DIERSEN: My wife and I have been paying the marriage penalty big time since we got married in 1978.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “I failed my first driving test,” Hannah told Chicago Inc., repeating a story that she acknowledges she told the packed room of her mother’s staff Jan. 11. “My mom said, ‘You’re not going to fail it again!’ ” “She put on a disguise of a fake nose and sunglasses and went to the DMV and followed someone taking the driving portion of the test so that she could learn the route, and then we practiced it,” Hannah continued. “I didn’t fail the second time!” Stepp’s daughter said she took the test when she was 16, about seven years ago, which would place the time of the test to around the time Stepp was appointed to lead the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources by Gov. Scott Walker. Hannah said she did not know where her mother got the false nose but that she “always has it with her.” The speech went down well, Hannah thought. Not everyone in the room agreed. Though two EPA staffers Inc. spoke with both praised Hannah’s “poise” they were taken aback by the driving test story.)

DAILY HERALD
— Roskam: Tax bill law modernizes rules, promotes growth – Marie Wilson (DIERSEN: Government should encourage home ownership. According to this article, “Critics say the tax law discourages homeownership and could decrease charitable giving because the higher standard deduction will lead fewer filers to itemize. To both of these, Roskam says the answer is economic growth, which he says the tax law will provide. The more the economy grows, the more money people have, they more likely they are to buy houses, he says. And the more money that people make, the more that they have to give.” But what about those, including retired people like the Diersens, who do not benefit from “economic growth?” It seems that the tax law encourages lower interest rates because it reduces the incentive to borrow money to buy/build a home. Young people, who typically are borrowers, benefit from low interest rates, while older people, who typically are savers, suffer from low interest rates.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180126/roskam-tax-bill-law-modernizes-rules-promotes-growth
(FROM THE ARTICLE: One immediate effect of the tax law sparked a flurry of suburban residents prepaying property taxes, in hopes the payments can be deducted under old rules. New rules cap the amount of state and local taxes that can be deducted at $10,000, and many in the 6th District pay more than that in property taxes alone. “The new law was silent as to the ability to prepay property taxes,” Roskam said, but he said he is working closely with the Internal Revenue Service and the House Ways and Means Committee to try to ensure people will see the advantage of early payment. Still, he said analyzing the whole array of changes, including a standard deduction increased to $24,000 for couples and a child tax credit doubled to $2,000, the law will produce positive results. He said a sample family in the 6th District — with a median income of $135,000 a year for a husband, wife and two children — is predicted to receive a $4,000 tax cut. “When you evaluate all of these things,” Roskam said, “even if the deductions go down, the way the rates are structured, it offers tax relief.” Critics say the tax law discourages homeownership and could decrease charitable giving because the higher standard deduction will lead fewer filers to itemize. To both of these, Roskam says the answer is economic growth, which he says the tax law will provide. The more the economy grows, the more money people have, they more likely they are to buy houses, he says. And the more money people make, the more they have to give. “We’re a generous country,” he said. “We celebrate this. We want a big civil society because we, as a country, have made a cultural decision as Americans that we highly value the nonprofit sector.”)

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said there were “very strong” arguments that the bill violates states’ rights as well as the Equal Protection clause in the U.S. Constitution. “The top 12 states that get hurt (by the bill) coincidentally all happen to be Democratic states,” Cuomo said, adding he had spoken with California Governor Jerry Brown about potential actions against the bill. The sweeping Republican tax bill signed into law by U.S. President Donald Trump introduced a $10,000 cap on deductions of state and local income and property taxes, known as SALT.
