If I had not been taking graduate business courses, IRS might not have promoted me in 1972, 1973, or 1974. If I had not had an MBA, if I had not been taking graduate accounting courses, and c) I had not passed the CPA examination on my first attempt, GAO would not have offered me a job in 1980. If had not had a master’s degree in accounting, if I had not passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, and if I had not become a licensed CPA in 1981, GAO would not have promoted me in 1986. January 29 Morning Edition

DAILY HERALD
— Lawmaker’s outrageous slur is no way to foster discussion of race – Editorial (DIERSEN: Are you a Trump supporter? Soon, Trump-haters will call you a White supremacist, Nazi, KKK member, hater, racist, sexist, bigot, and even worse things. What are you doing to prepare for that? Suggestions include always wearing a body camera when you leave your home and keeping it turned on. From what I see, Trump-haters are most likely to attack their Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captain. If your Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain was attacked by Trump-haters, how strongly would the following come to your Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain’s defense: a) the officers of your Republican township, ward, and county party organizations, b) your representative on the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee, c) the IRP officers, d) the IRP National Committeeman, and e) the IRP National Committeewoman? I should write a book about the aforesaid in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who despise if not hate Trump and would NOT come to my defense if I was attacked by Trump-haters.)
https://www.dailyherald.com/discuss/20190128/editorial-lawmakers-outrageous-slur-is-no-way-to-foster-discussion-of-race
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: The unfortunate thing about state Rep. Anne Stava-Murray’s description of her hometown as “white supremacist” is less how wrong and irresponsible the characterization is than how destructive it is to a conversation that needs to continue. In an interview last week with the Daily Herald’s Marie Wilson, the Naperville Democrat doubled down on a Facebook post that attracted broad criticism, insisting that long-dead policies and practices in “the whole Chicago region” justify claiming that today we see “white supremacy in an unclad kind of way, without its hood on” in contemporary policies and attitudes. Her comments, let us state flatly, are patently offensive and outrageously exaggerated. Whatever racial inequities and prejudices exist in Naperville or any other Chicago suburb, they cannot remotely be compared to the openly hostile and vile actions and behaviors of a misguided subset of white Americans who espouse ignorant claims of racial superiority and urge separation from and subjugation of other races. That she does not recognize the insult in her remark and believes “starting a conversation” justifies it is a bitter reflection on the quality of her own judgment and a worrisome suggestion about her own ability to operate effectively as a leader in her community.)

She worked for the U.S. League of Savings Institutions (https://www.investopedia.com/terms/u/u-s-league-of-savings-institutions.asp) which had quarterly meetings at luxury destinations across America which she attended as its Corporate Secretary. I routinely accompanied her on those trips. Often, after the meetings were over, we visited nearby national parks. Needless-to-say, my envy-filled IRS and GAO Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were beyond furious. Overwhelmingly, their spouses had little or no income. Further, I went on vacations with a coworker to Hawaii, Mexico, Bahamas, and Jamaica while I worked for IRS 1973-1976.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democratic lawmakers are proposing to prohibit employers from inquiring about the dates of a job applicant’s birth and graduation. A group of 25 House Democrats is sponsoring the legislation with the stated aim of reducing age discrimination in job hiring. “This bill will make a real difference for seniors who are being unfairly vetted based on their age,” said Rep. Derek Slap, D-West Hartford, a lead sponsor. The Labor and Public Employees Committee is scheduled to vote this afternoon to set a hearing date for House Bill 6113 and five other bills. A state law enacted last year bars Connecticut employers from asking job applicants about how much previous jobs paid them without a job offer being made that includes wages. It took effect this month.)

While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, because I am Republican, White, male, and non-veteran, my Democrat superiors did everything that they could to not hire me, to not retain me, to not promote me, and to get rid of me. My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take a $19,203 (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

If you are a federal employee who is Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran, the federal government gets rid of you if you do not make GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40.)
http://www.chicagonow.com/windy-city-legal-geek/2019/01/why-arent-progressives-more-outspoken-against-age-discrimination/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I can be forgiven if I’m a little pissed off right now. The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals decided a few days ago that it’s okay for employers to discriminate against me. As I explained in my June 9 blog post, a man named Dale Kleber sued CareFusion Corp. for discriminatory hiring practices in violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA). A three-judge panel of the Seventh Circuit found that CareFusion violated the Act when it published a job description seeking an in-house attorney “with no more than 7 years’ relevant legal experience.” Kleber claimed that was really code for younger candidates, in light of the fact the company hired a 29-year-old instead of him.)

NEW YORK TIMES
— Trump Meets With Hard-Right Group Led by Ginni Thomas – Maggie Haberman and Annie Karni (DIERSEN: How “hard right” are you? I oppose government doing anything that promotes a) welfare, b) dependency on government, c) dependency on charity, d) LGBTQ activity, e) abortion, f) mass/illegal immigration, g) diminishment of First and Second Amendment rights, h) booze, gambling, pot, and other vices, i) patronage, j) political affiliation discrimination, k) reverse discrimination, and l) age discrimination.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/26/us/politics/trump-ginni-thomas-meeting.html

(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Trump met last week with a delegation of hard-right activists led by Ginni Thomas, the wife of Justice Clarence Thomas, listening quietly as members of the group denounced transgender people and women serving in the military, according to three people with direct knowledge of the events. For 60 minutes Mr. Trump sat, saying little but appearing taken aback, the three people said, as the group also accused White House aides of blocking Trump supporters from getting jobs in the administration. It is unusual for the spouse of a sitting Supreme Court justice to have such a meeting with a president, and some close to Mr. Trump said it was inappropriate for Ms. Thomas to have asked to meet with the head of a different branch of government. A vocal conservative, Ms. Thomas has long been close to what had been the Republican Party’s fringes, and extremely outspoken against Democrats. Her activism has raised concerns of conflicts of interest for her husband, who is perhaps the most conservative member of the Supreme Court.)
— Hospitals Are Asking Their Own Patients to Donate Money – Phil Galewitz (DIERSEN: Do political parties do “wealth screenings?”)
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/24/business/hospitals-asking-patients-donate-money.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Many hospitals conduct nightly wealth screenings — using software that culls public data such as property records, contributions to political campaigns and other charities — to gauge which patients are most likely to be the source of large donations. Those who seem promising targets for fund-raising may receive a visit from a hospital executive in their rooms, as well as extra amenities like a bathrobe or a nicer waiting area for their families. Some hospitals train doctors and nurses to identify patients who have expressed gratitude for their care, and then put the patients in touch with staff fund-raisers. These various tactics, part of a strategy known as “grateful patient programs,” make some people uncomfortable. “Wealth screenings strike me as unseemly but not illegal or unethical,” said Arthur Caplan, a bioethicist at the New York University School of Medicine.)

Before that, I worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which, at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880/year. Further, it looks like none of them are CPAs, Certified Internal Auditors (CIA), licensed CPAs, Certified Fraud Examiners (CFE), Certified Government Financial Managers (CGFM), Certified Financial Service Auditors CFSA), or Forensic Accountants (FA). I became a CPA in 1979, a CIA in 1981, a licensed CPA in 1981, a CFE in 1990, a CGFM in 1994, a CFSA in 1996, and a FA in 1997.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/26/us/government-shutdown-over.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: CHICAGO — On Day 1 of what would become the longest government shutdown in the country’s history, Mary Kelly had a typically American view of the situation: She was optimistic. As an employee of the Internal Revenue Service, she had been through shutdowns before. This one would not last long, she figured. On Day 24, weeks into her mandatory furlough, she applied for unemployment benefits. Ten days after that, she left her home in the Chicago suburbs, rode a train downtown and joined demonstrators on a windswept Federal Plaza, her cheeks mottled pink from the cold. “I was never scared during shutdowns in the past,” Ms. Kelly, a union officer, said during the protest on Thursday, wearing woolen gloves and clutching a sign. “But now who knows what’s going to happen?” And then on Day 35, with no resolution seemingly in sight, she had her answer in news leaked from Washington: The shutdown was finally coming to an end.)

MIAMI HERALD
— Could you live on your retirement savings for 23 years? – DAYANA YOCHIM (DIERSEN: The lower a retiree’s standard of living, the longer before that retiree’s savings runs out. Last year, my 88-year-old aunt’s expenses were $93,501 including $87,116 for assisted living, $2,532 for income taxes, $1,715 for medications, and $1,572 for Medicare. Her income was $33,691 and she withdrew $72,831 from her retirement savings. That resulted in her retirement savings decreasing by $56,136 or from $497,958 down to $441,823. Simplistically, $56,136 divided by $441,823 is 8, her retirement savings will be exhausted in less than 8 years.)
https://www.miamiherald.com/news/article225007550.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The average budget for a retiree, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data, provides even more color on what to expect when you’re expecting to retire. Older households, defined as ones headed by someone 65 or older, spend $46,000 annually, versus the $57,000 average spent by all U.S. households combined. The top three monthly expenses for those 65 and older are housing ($1,322), health care ($500) and food ($484). On average, about half of a retired household’s income comes from Social Security and private and government pensions, according to the BLS, with personal savings and investment and rental income providing 6.9 percent.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— OUTSTANDING: Councilman Kevin Coyne may seek formal rebuke of state rep’s claim that Naperville has ‘white supremacist’ policies – Erin Hegarty (DIERSEN: QUESTION: When a municipality is slandered or libeled by a public figure, who should respond? ANSWER: All the elected officials who represent/represented all or part of that municipality, all the past and present officers of the political parties that represent all or part of that municipality, and all past and present officers of other organizations that represent all or part of that municipality.)
https://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/news/ct-nvs-stava-murray-white-supremacist-rebuke-comments-st-0127-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The councilman said he personally is so angered that he will not refer to Stava-Murray as a state representative because “she doesn’t deserve that title.” “She has made vile comments against the very people that she was just elected to represent,” Coyne said in a statement. “Her actions are the most disgusting that I have ever seen from an elected official. I’m strongly considering motioning to have our great city censure Stava-Murray for her self-serving and outrageous political posturing. Clearly she puts scoring political points with the fringe left above her job as a representative for Naperville. I’m not inclined to let that pass.” Coyne said he’s not sure what he might introduce at the next council meeting, possibly a proclamation or position with which members could agree. “I think we need to make some kind of a statement to address her conduct and what’s she’s been saying about the community she was elected to represent,” he said. “We can’t let our own elected officials ruin the reputation of our city because of a self-serving agenda,” Coyne said. “This is not a partisan issue. There’s across the board outrage with what she’s said and doing.”)

https://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/opinion/ct-nvs-naperville-letters-st-0127-story.html
(FROM THE LETTER: The dissatisfaction voiced by state Rep. Anne Stava-Murray about the “white supremacist policies” of the city of Naperville is based on someone else’s complaints. I am of Mexican-American descent and have lived quite happily in Naperville for over 31 years. I participate in local activities, volunteer in places of need and worship without conflict. I am sure ethnic comments may have been uttered out of my earshot or ignorant individuals made comments to my children, unaware of their ancestry, but overall I believe Naperville has presented itself as a wholesome, kind and generous town. It is unfortunate when a person feels bullied and picked on, but we have to turn the other cheek and not retaliate in kind, as you, Ms. Stava-Murray, seem to do. I suggest you start looking for real estate in Oak Park. It is probably a better fit for you!)
— White supremacy in Naperville ‘ridiculous’ – Bill Voda, Warrenville
https://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/opinion/ct-nvs-naperville-letters-st-0127-story.html
(FROM THE LETTER: State Rep. Anne Stava-Murray appears to be confused by what a “white supremacist” philosophy is. Naperville may be smug, snobbish, even elitist, but “white supremacist? Ridiculous. Perhaps Rep. Stava-Murray defines “white supremacist” as a successful Caucasian who takes responsibility for their actions and doesn’t blame others for their failures? Or the fact that Naperville schools graduate more successful minorities than the Chicago Public Schools while spending LESS per pupil. Unlike the failed policies of businesses and educational systems that are popular, Naperville focuses on developing and hiring people that have excellent skills, knowledge and abilities rather than on their cultural heritage. Those are attributes that actually lead to success in life.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Anywhere from 11 million to 22 million illegal aliens reside in the United States today. The most recent research suggests that the higher number is closest to the correct figure. In and of itself, that is a crisis. New arrivals—legal and illegal—come to America all the time. Two-thirds of these, Steven W. Mosher writes, use food stamps and other forms of state-administered assistance, such as public housing, not long after they arrive in the country, leaving Americans with a $116 billion annual tab. Moreover, much of the savings these new arrivals manage to accumulate are sent out of the country as remittances, about $25 billion of which ends up in Mexico. More people today speak a single non-English language—Spanish—than ever before in American history. For the first time, too, the middle class has registered as a minority in our country—an issue no doubt exacerbated by the importation of droves impoverished foreigners.)

https://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/jb-pritzker-campaign-spending-democrats-illinois-republicans-dire-financial-straits/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Democratic Party of Illinois ended the year with about $1.4 million in the bank. The Illinois Republican Party finished with $313,000. The IL GOP is going to have to be frugal for a while until they can raise some dough. Rauner has been the state GOP’s most reliable donor. The former governor contributed $36.9 million to the state party since June 13th of 2014. The party raised another $20 million or so on top of that since that same date, but a large chunk of that money was pass-through cash from the two legislative caucuses for direct mail costs. The unofficial leader of the Republican Party’s wealthy Chicago-area “donor class” was Ron Gidwitz. He helped raise a ton of money for his party over the years. But Gidwitz is now the US Ambassador to Belgium, so he can’t do them any good. Bottom line: The Republican Party in this state is in very dire straits.)

— Wheaton Bowl owner Sal Falbo says he was targeted by Council candidate Bray-Parker – Glenn Minnis (DIERSEN: In 2002, I succeeded in getting the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) to hold its monthly meetings in the Wheaton Bowl Banquet Hall and the MTRCC has held its monthly meetings there ever since.)
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511739295-wheaton-bowl-owner-says-he-was-targeted-by-council-candidate-bray-parker
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sal Falbo thinks Erica Bray-Parker could use a new lesson plan. “I don’t think her actions were the right thing to be teaching her students,” Falbo told the DuPage Policy Journal as rumors of Bray-Parker’s attempting to bully him and other business owners in Wheaton into removing signs from their properties that were for political candidates she doesn’t agree with continue to swirl. “We all have a right to freedom of speech, and as a teacher you would think she would know and understand that,” he added. According to local business owner Jane Shaw, all the drama began when Bray-Parker, who teaches at Glenbard North and is an instructor at the Civics Club, penned a letter to Falbo and other local business owners demanding that they remove posters of former state Rep. Jeanne Ives, a Republican of Wheaton, from in front of their businesses, vowing never to return to their establishments if they failed to comply. Bray-Parker, who is running for Wheaton City Council in District 4, is also accused of using her students as part of her “bullying” campaign, Shaw added. “I don’t live in Wheaton but if I did there’s no way I would vote for her,” said Faldo, part owner of Wheaton Bowl. “She’s obviously an activist, but part of the responsibility in that is understanding that everyone has the same free speech rights that you do. On top of that, the signs she was complaining about weren’t even on my property; they were in front. She’s really made an issue out of a nonissue.” Meanwhile, Ives, who relinquished her seat in Springfield with the start of the legislative session, has been adamant in expressing her opinion that she doesn’t think what she calls Bray-Parker’s brand of politics is right for Wheaton. “Erica Bray-Parker should not be elected; make sure she isn’t,” she told the DuPage Policy Journal. “She is unfit to represent business owners and the respectful, hard-working taxpayers of Wheaton. She is a civics teacher who is not civil.” Bray-Parker also raised eyebrows in May 2018, when she penned a letter in the Daily Herald assailing Peter Breen, a Republican of Lombard who was a state representative at the time, over what she perceived to be his inadequate stance on the issue of gun control.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— McGlasson discouraged by lack of response to meeting request – W.J. Kennedy (DIERSEN: What do the following have to say about this: your Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain, the officers of your Republican township, ward, and/or county party organizations, your representative on the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee, the IRP officers, the IRP National Committeeman, and the IRP National Committeewoman?)
https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511740588-mcglasson-discouraged-by-lack-of-response-to-meeting-request
(FROM THE ARTICLE: All that Republican Committeeman John McGlasson says he is likely to get out of his call for a special meeting of the state GOP after the shellacking the party took in November is a chance to speak his mind at the party’s regularly scheduled meeting on Feb. 9 in Bolingbrook. If he can make his way onto the agenda. “Never heard back from anyone,” McGlasson, referring to his request for a special meeting, told Prairie State Wire. “I’m completely discouraged. I’ll try to give my viewpoints at the regular party meeting, if I get a chance.” The conservative McGlasson, committeeman from the 16th Congressional District, seconded fellow Committeeman’s Sean Morrison’s call for a special meeting after the embarrassing revelation in mid-December that Bruce Rauner sought someone to take his place on the ballot soon after his near loss to former State Rep. Jeanne Ives, a Republican of Wheaton, in the March primary. Again, he heard nothing. “We should be out looking hard for someone to challenge (U.S. Senator Dick) Durbin in 2020,” he said. “A good, enthusiastic candidate will help other candidates in down-ticket races. Maybe we could take a few of the House seats back. But they seem to be content with the way things are.” McGlasson needs five of the 18 Republican Central Committee members to call a special meeting of the party. He says with Bob Winchester’s legal claim for his Committee spot in the 15th Congressional District still in legal limbo, he doesn’t have them. “It is my opinion that the party needs to return to its roots as expressed in our party platform,” he said. “And we need to search for a leader that will lead us back to the basics of conservatism.” McGlasson said that a move is on to have Ives speak in Bolingbrook, but she told the Prairie State Wire that she has yet to receive an invitation. “I would tell them that they are disorganized and rudderless,” Ives said. “We need a fiscal contract with Illinoisans and a strategy to carry it out.” “We need new leadership,” she added, “after that bloodbath in November, and (the) revelation about Rauner. They (party leaders) can’t claim ignorance about that. He’s been funding the party for years.”)

— There was chatter at last week’s inauguration that Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s management and media style can be compared to another governor—Republican Jim Thompson. “Thompson would walk down in the press room and have a few beers with us and try to get to know us casually,” recalled Thom Serafin, a public affairs strategist who worked as a reporter back in the day. “He was good at dealing with people. A lot like Bill Clinton. He’d look you in the eye. You’d feel like he’s really interested in what you have to say. That’s a gift Jim Thompson had, and I see it in J.B.” Pritzker so far seems willing to keep an open line of communication with media. We’ll have to wait and see if he’s ready to have a beer with us. Big Jim Thompson, as he was known, attended Pritzker’s swearing in. He had a knack for giving people responsibility “and then letting them do their jobs,” said James Prescott, a public affairs consultant who worked for Thompson from 1981-88 as a press aide. He attended the inauguration gala and brought along a commemorative coin from Thompson’s 1977 inauguration—the first of four. – Shia Kapos (DIERSEN: I should write a book about the nastiest, rudest, and meanest politicians, their operatives, and their dupes in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois.)

Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) will propose a new annual “wealth tax” on Americans with more than $50 million in assets, according to an economist advising her on the plan, as Democratic leaders vie for increasingly aggressive solutions to the nation’s soaring wealth inequality. Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman, two left-leaning economists at the University of California, Berkeley, have been advising Warren on a proposal to levy a 2 percent wealth tax on Americans with assets above $50 million, as well as a 3 percent wealth tax on those who have more than $1 billion, according to Saez.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mistake # 3 Left The College Graduation Year Off Or Fudged It Some job hunters removed the graduation date thinking employers can figure out their age. Omitting your year of college graduation was a concern for Lizzie Rahm, HR Senior Manager and Recruiter, Clark Nuber PS who noted that employers may wonder if you had ever finished your degree if they saw no graduation date. Another worry is that a third of all job applicants lie about their education (see the Career Builder study), and when I mention this to Ms. Rahm, she quickly stated that her organization does a background check on every single person they make a job offer to. So if you are lying about the year you earned a degree to appear younger, it will come out. And if you claimed to have a degree that you don’t, that will be in the background report too. The result of lying to this employer is they will terminate your job offer. “There are so many background check companies out there now,” cautions Rahm “that many employers are doing thorough background checks on new hires, so job hunters definitely need to use integrity in creating their resume.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The current government shutdown is the longest in American history, surpassing the previous three-week shutdown in late 1995 and early 1996. Before 2019, the federal government experienced more than a dozen shutdowns and funding gaps of varying lengths and with varying impacts. While the federal government went more than a decade without a shutdown in the early 2000s, they happened almost annually during the Carter presidency, and there were six during Reagan’s presidency. In the early 1980s, opinions by then-Attorney General Benjamin Civiletti altered the impact of lawmakers’ failure to pass new spending bills. Prior to that, shutdowns did not always entail an actual stop to government functioning, according to the Associated Press, and they were “simply funding gaps with little real-world effect.” Here’s a look back at shutdowns since 1990:)

— Ives charges Bray-Parker with bullying – Glenn Minnis
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511739013-ives-charges-bray-parker-with-bullying
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Former state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton says Erica Bray-Parker does not deserve to represent that city. “Erica Bray-Parker should not be elected; make sure she isn’t,” Ives told the DuPage Policy Journal of the Glenbard North teacher and Civics Club instructor now running for Wheaton City Council in District 4. “She is unfit to represent business owners and the respectful, hard-working taxpayers of Wheaton. She is a civics teacher who is not civil.” Indeed, Bray-Parker’s campaign has recently been dogged by controversy, with local business owner Jane Shaw telling the DuPage Policy Journal of rumors she heard about Bray-Parker bullying local business owners into taking down the signs of candidates she doesn’t support. The veteran educator is also accused of having manipulated her students into aiding her and her campaign. Ives argues Bray-Parker is all about special interests, warning voters that if she is elected they face additional taxes, being told what to do with their property and some form of censorship. “Churches beware too, as she has opinions, apparently, about which views of Christianity are best,” Ives added. “When your church wants to expand, would she allow a zoning change or block it with her vote?” Finally, Ives charges Bray-Parker is more than willing to run roughshod over “our Constitutional and God-given natural rights,” adding she thinks Bray-Parker has not shown herself to be inclusive in the least. “Fortunately, the business owner at Wheaton Bowl (one of the owners Bray-Parker is accused of trying to strong-arm) refused to be bullied by her,” she added. “Other businesses, I am told, cowered to her demands—which is why everyone should frequent Wheaton Bowl and tell them you appreciate their common sense and decency.” Ives urged voters to take to the polls in April to reject what she called Bray-Parker’s brand of politics. “There are two seats up for Wheaton City Council at-large,” she said. “Running against ((Bray-)Parker are Suzanne Fitch and Ron Almiron. They have my support and will receive my vote.)
