August 14 Morning Edition

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— China’s crackdown on dissent is described as the harshest in decades – Julie Makinen (DIERSEN: Are you a Republican activist, candidate, elected official, party leader, major donor, political consultant, etc. in Illinois?  Have you joined with Pat Brady in shouting hatred against Trump and shouting hatred against Trump’s supporters?  If Trump loses on November 8, 2016, how fast and how harshly will the anti-Trumps crackdown in Illinois?  How fast will they dump the following if they do not shout hatred against Trump and shout hatred against Trump’s supporters: the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) Chairman, the IRP National Committeeman, the IRP National Committeewoman, the IRP State Central Committee members, the county party officers, the township and ward party officers, precinct committeemen and precinct captains, the governor, state senators, state representatives, county officials, township and ward officials, municipal officials, etc.  Will the anti-Trumps install Pat Brady as governor, as IRP Chairman, and/or as IRP National Committeeman?  Of course, needless-to-say, Democrats and Democrat plants, Libertarians and Libertarian plants, Greens and Green plants, and RINOs will take the lead in getting rid of those who do not shout hatred against Trump and who do not shout hatred against Trump’s supporters.)

— How many MBA grads stay in Chicago? – Ally Marotti  (DIERSEN: From what university did you earn your MBA, in what year, how old were you, and who paid for it?  I earned my MBA from Loyola in 1976 when I was 27 years old. I paid for it with money that I earned working for IRS’s Collection Division. Of course, needless-to-say, my Democrat IRS superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates hinted/implied/argued/shouted that the courses a) were not job-related, b) did not help me carry out my job duties, c) were taken by me to get a job in the private sector, and d) were a distraction.  To get promoted, instead of taking job-related courses, my Democrat IRS superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates focused on getting rid of IRS employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)

HERALD & REVIEW
— Davis’s support for Trump is troubling – Editorial  (DIERSEN: How much clout do the anti-Trumps have in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, in Illinois, in America, and in the world?  How fast are those anti-Trumps moving to a) first get rid of Trump supporters and b) then get rid of those who do not share their hatred of Trump and their hatred of Trump supporters?  Anti-Trumps are anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)

(FROM THE EDITORIAL: But Davis’ refusal to step away from his party and the Trump campaign is troubling. Davis can’t really believe that after nearly two years of a campaign that features name-calling and temper tantrums that Trump is going to change his ways in the next 100 days. By supporting Trump, even timidly, Davis is putting himself on the same side as the candidate the referred to Mexican immigrants as “rapists,” believes Muslim should be banned from entering the country and thinks it’s appropriate to criticize the mother and father of a son who made the ultimate sacrifice. We’ve often thought of Davis as a reasonable representative, but this decision calls that belief into question.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump Saturday threatened to revoke the credentials of The New York Times after the newspaper published a report detailing the “failing” effort by Republican Party operatives to “save Mr. Trump from himself.” “The newspaper’s going to hell,” Trump told a rally at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn. “They’ve got a couple of reporters in that newspaper who are so bad — I mean lack of talent. But it’s going to hell. “So, I think maybe what we’ll do, maybe we’ll start thinking about taking their press credentials away from them,” the Republican nominee added, drawing cheers from the crowd. “Maybe we’ll do that. I think so. I think so. “When they write dishonest stories, we should be a little bit tough, don’t we agree?” Many in the audience yelled “yeah.” The Times report, by Alexander Burns and Maggie Haberman, detailed efforts by staffers to keep Trump on script, focus more on policy and tone down his inflammatory rhetoric and combative style. It was based on interviews with 20 Republicans, many of whom insisted on anonymity to avoid clashing with him,” according to the Times. The article also described a meeting Trump had with GOP political consultant Karl Rove and casino magnate Steve Wynn during primaries — from which Rove emerged “stunned” that the nominee knew little about campaign basics. Trump slammed the Times for using anonymous sources, saying “I don’t think they have any names.” In an overall attack on the press, Trump that it was his biggest competitor in this campaign, not Hillary Clinton. “I’m not running against crooked Hillary,” he said. “I’m running against the crooked media. “That’s what I’m running against, I’m not running against crooked Hillary.” Trump has revoked the press credentials of several media outlets, including Politico, The Washington Post and The Huffington Post. “I’m no fan of the Washington Post, although they have been much nicer lately, I must say,” Trump said Saturday. “Maybe I’ll let them back in. they’ve been much better.” He also ripped CNN for its coverage of him saying that President Barack Obama was the “founder” of the Islamic State — a remark he later said was sarcastic, “but not that sarcastic.” “CNN is so disgusting,” Trump said. “Their ratings are going down big league. “You know why? Because I refuse to be interviewed. And I get high ratings, what can I say? “These people are so dishonest.” He later praised an article from The New York Post, which detailed his contributions as a developer to New York City. Trump slammed the Times report on Twitter:)

— What makes marijuana users different from everyone else – Christopher Ingraham  (DIERSEN: If you use pot, you shout that you want to harm yourself, that is, that you are mentally ill.  Individuals, organizations, companies, governments, and countries that push pot in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, in Illinois, and in America shout that THEY WANT TO DESTROY THOSE WHO ARE in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, in Illinois, and in America.)
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/08/14/what-makes-marijuana-users-different-from-everyone-else/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A massive study published this month in the Journal of Drug Issues found that the proportion of marijuana users who smoke daily has rapidly grown, and that many of those frequent users are poor and lack a high-school diploma. Examining a decade of federal surveys of drug use conducted between 2002 and 2013, study authors Steven Davenport and Jonathan Caulkins paint one of the clearest pictures yet of the demographics of current marijuana use in the U.S.  They found that the profile of marijuana users is much closer to cigarette smokers than alcohol drinkers, and that a handful of users consume much of the marijuana used in the U.S. “In the early 1990s only one in nine past-month [marijuana] users reported using daily or near-daily,” Davenport and Caulkins write. “Now it is fully one in three. Daily or near-daily users now account for over two-thirds of self-reported days of use (68%).” These usage patterns are similar to what’s seen among tobacco users. “What’s going on here is that over the last 20 years marijuana went from being used like alcohol to being used more like tobacco, in the sense of lots of people using it every day,” Caulkins said in an email. Adults with less than a high school education accounted for 19 percent of all marijuana use in 2012 and 2013 (compared to 13 percent of the total adult population), according to the survey. This is similar to their 20 percent share of all cigarette use, but considerably higher than their 8 percent share of all alcohol use. Similarly, Americans of all ages with a household income of less than $20,000 accounted for 29 percent of all marijuana use and 27 percent of all cigarette use, compared to only 13 percent of all alcohol use and 19 percent of the total adult population. The concentration of use among poorer households means that many marijuana users are spending a high proportion of their income on their marijuana habit. Users who spend fully one quarter of their income on weed account for 15 percent of all marijuana use. One interesting finding is that over the past 10 years as many states have liberalized their marijuana policies, marijuana arrests are down while marijuana purchases are up. This means that the risk of getting arrested for marijuana use has fallen sharply since 2002. That year, there was one marijuana arrest for every 550 marijuana purchases, according to Davenport and Caulkins. By 2013, there was one marijuana arrest for every 1,090 purchases. “The criminal risk per marijuana transaction has fallen by half,” they conclude. Much of that risk is still born by non-white marijuana users. Davenport and Caulkins stress that since the study was conducted over a period preceding the opening of recreational marijuana markets in Colorado and Washington, it doesn’t offer any evidence on the merits or lack thereof of legalization. “Our results can in no way be interpreted as evidence toward the successes or failures of marijuana legalization or even medical marijuana laws,” they write. However, they say their research presents a number of things to consider as states like California, Arizona and Maine vote on marijuana legalization this fall. “Most people who have used marijuana in the past year are in full control of their use, and are generally happy with that use,” Caulkins said in an email. But, “consumption is highly concentrated among the smaller number of daily & near-daily users, and they tend to be less educated, less affluent, and less in control of their use.” The median marijuana user, in other words, may be someone who indulges periodically but generally doesn’t consume a lot of it. However, most of the marijuana consumed in the U.S. isn’t consumed by the median marijuana user, but rather by the very heavy users who smoke daily or more. “There is a sharp contrast between what policy is best for the typical user versus what is best for the people who consume most of the marijuana,” Caulkins said. Legalization may not change much in the life of the typical marijuana user. But heavy users who overindulge may find it even easier to do so when marijuana is legal and cheaper to buy. The findings support the argument for legalization measures to be accompanied by public health protections — like treatment programs and public awareness campaigns educating people about the risks of overuse.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: There are many demographic fault lines emerging in this year’s presidential campaign, but few are deeper than the division among likely voters based on educational attainment. Those with the least number of years of education are far more likely to support Donald Trump, while those who have had the most schooling are much more likely to back Hillary Clinton, according to a Bloomberg Politics national poll released this week. “The presence or absence of a college degree is more predictive of the vote in this election than we’ve seen in past elections,” said pollster J. Ann Selzer, who oversees many political surveys for Bloomberg Politics. Another trend may also be developing in the campaign that could pose a threat to Clinton: apathy among potential voters under age 35.)

— WARNING ISSUED OVER COMPUTER HACKS THAT CAN INJURE MOTORISTS  Activists urge resurrection of California case about ‘connected’ cars – BOB UNRUH
http://www.wnd.com/2016/08/warning-issued-over-computer-hacks-that-can-injure-motorists/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A team of privacy experts is urging a California appeals court to resurrect a case spotlighting the hacking of computers in cars, warning breaches could result not only in stolen identity but physical injury. “‘Connected vehicles’ expose American drivers to the risks of data breach, auto theft, and physical injury,” the Electronic Privacy Information Center asserted in a friend-of-the-court brief to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. They, and others, are asking that a lawsuit out of San Francisco be restored. The case, Helene Cahen v. Toyota, focuses on the electronic monitoring and Internet connectivity built into cars. A trial judge dismissed the case for lack of standing, but the brief contends the ruling should be reversed. And it’s no longer just about privacy, it’s about public safety, too, the brief argues. “The internal computer systems for these vehicles are subject to hacking, unbounded data collection, and broad-scale cyber attack,” the brief explains. “Despite this extraordinary risk, car manufacturers are expanding the reach of networked vehicles that enable third party access to driver data and vehicle operational systems. “The plaintiffs in this case seek the opportunity to present legal claims stemming from the defendants’ sale of vehicles that place them at risk. That should be allowed to proceed.” WND reported a year ago when two U.S. senators proposed the SPY Car Act of 2015 to create privacy standards for computer systems that control today’s generation of electronics-heavy vehicles. The proposal came just as a Wired.com contributor reported hackers who set him up in a new vehicle were able to take over its controls while he was driving at 70 mph. “As the two hackers remotely toyed with the air-conditioning, radio and windshield wipers, I mentally congratulated myself on my courage under pressure,” wrote Andy Greenberg at Wired in an article headlined “Hackers remotely kill a Jeep on the highway.” In the 2015 article, he reported, suddenly his vehicle slowed to a crawl, an 18-wheeler =approached from behind and “the experiment had ceased to be fun,” he wrote. Privacy advocates have warned since 2011 about in-car tracking and other computer devices. Marc Rotenberg of the Electronic Privacy Information Center wrote then that data from embedded “black boxes” in vehicles could provide unwanted information to state agencies. Later, the systems were upgraded, connecting vehicles to the Internet. Greenberg explained that the industry’s Uconnect is prompting questions. It’s an Internet-connected computer feature in hundreds of thousands of Fiat Chrysler cars, SUVs and trucks that controls the vehicles’ entertainment and navigation, enables phone calls and provides a Wi-Fi hot spot. Greenberg noted the cell connection also “lets anyone who knows the car’s IP address gain access from anywhere in the country.” The hackers with whom he was working, he said, have “only tested their full set of physical hacks, including targeting transmission and braking systems, on a Jeep Cherokee, though they believe that most of their attacks could be tweaked to work on any Chrysler vehicle with the vulnerable Uconnect head unit.” EPIC already has written extensively about the “Internet of Things,” explaining how various technologies communicate with each other through systems such as IPv6, RFID, Wi-Fi and GPS in appliances, smartphones, wearable computers and other devices. “The ubiquity of connected devices would enable [the] collection of data about sensitive behavior patterns, which could be used in unauthorized ways or by unauthorized individuals,” EPIC said. With “340 trillion” Internet Protocol addresses available, there’s no problem with assigning each vehicle one, the article explained. The new brief argues that some of these issues need to be adjudicated so that American consumers know what they’re getting into. In dismissing the case, the court “underestimated the substantial risk to public safety of connected cars and misconstrued the plaintiffs’ invasion of privacy claim. Whether or not the court ultimately agrees with the allegations presented, they are clearly sufficient to establish Article III standing,” the brief argues. Additionally, the “court’s conclusion is also wrong because it fundamentally misunderstands the security vulnerabilities created by connected cars,” EPIC writes. “Cars today are dependent on extraordinarily complex onboard computer systems. According to the Government Accountability Office, the typical modern high-end car contains over 100 million lines of code – substantially more than a Boeing 787 passenger airline[r], which contains 6.5 million lines of code, or an F-22 U.S. Air Force jet fighter, which contains 1.7 million lines. … As these vehicles have become more complex, the potential for software errors and related vulnerabilities correspondingly rise.” However, the brief notes, “car manufacturers have failed to take adequate steps to address these vulnerabilities.” Since first appearing in the 1970s, “electronic control units” in cars “have grown in complexity, replacing or controlling many mechanical functions. The typical modern vehicle now relies on computerization for almost everything from ‘engine management to steering, braking, climate control, navigation, [and] infotainment,’” the brief says. By now, everything, “engine management system, brake controller, airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, door locks, gauge cluster, sound system, seat controls, communications systems and telematics units are all interconnected.” In short, that means “window switches have a potential path of communication to the brake controller, the entertainment system has a channel to communicate through to the vehicle’s airbags, and so on.” There also is no “authentication” system, “allowing anyone with access to the system, authorized or not, to control vehicle components,” it explains, with access available through Bluetooth or GPS. As a result, millions of cars on the road ‘are vulnerable and pose a serious security risk to their occupants and to others.” The warning followed: “Wide-scale malicious automobile hacking is no longer theoretical. The lower court failed to appreciate the nature and immediacy of the problem when it concluded that the threat is ‘speculative.’ Although a full-scale remote car hijacking is certainly a serious risk to car owners and others …. Hijacking is not the only risk… Connected cars leave consumers open to car theft, data theft, and other forms of attack as well. These attacks are not speculative; many customers have already suffered due to vulnerable car systems.” Ransomware attacks and electronic disabling are just a few of the problems that already have been reported.“Connected vehicles raise significant public safety concerns that the courts cannot ignore. One company has already recalled 1.4 million vehicles because of the risk of remote hacking,” the brief says. And some 20 states regulate the collection and use of driver data. “But wide scale malicious automobile hacking is certainly imminent, if not already occurring,” EPIC says. Earlier this year, WND columnist Craige McMillan warned: “Let’s face it: Hacking these vehicles isn’t a possibility; it’s a certainty. It might be a kid spoofing you, trying to make you crash. Maybe a gang that’s going to reprogram your destination and part out both you and your vehicle. Heck, they could even operate from overseas via your onboard Internet. “Professional criminal gangs already orchestrate crashes on freeways and busy streets to bilk insurance companies; why wouldn’t they turn to hacking as well? A skilled team of such experts could probably hack you right up into a semi tractor trailer, bolt the door and take you and the vehicle anywhere they wanted.” His concern was for the fully computerized, self-driving vehicles. “Somehow, self-driving cars just don’t seem very well thought out to me. The penalty for not thinking this out before we do it is going to be very large, indeed.”)

— Fake Newspapers Misleading Will, DuPage County Residents: State Senator  Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant is asking all candidates to sever communications with the papers. – Scott Viau  (DIERSEN: When will Scott Viau write an article about newspapers, television stations, radio stations, websites, etc. that deny that they are arms of Democrat Party but act like they are arms of the Democrat Party?)
http://patch.com/illinois/joliet/fake-newspapers-misleading-will-dupage-county-residents-state-senator
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Newspapers distributed recently in Will and DuPage counties are actually political mailings funded by radio show host Dan Proft and Gov. Bruce Rauner. According to 49th District State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, who issued a news release warning residents, Proft and Rauner fund the papers through the Liberty Principles PAC. Proft is chairman and treasurer of the Illinois Liberty Principles PAC. Proft, who hosts a radio show on AM 560 with Amy Jacobson, has long been a behind-the-scenes guy in Republican politics, working on Senate campaigns for Jack Ryan and Alan Keyes, gubernatorial campaigns for Patrick O’Malley and Steven Rauschenberger, and for several Republican municipal officials. Proft ran for governor himself in the 2010 GOP primary. The papers, as listed by the Illinois Press Association, are Chambana Sun, DuPage Policy Journal, East Central Reporter, Kankakee Times, Lake County Gazette, McHenry Times, Metro East Sun, North Cook News, Rock Island Today, Sangamon Sun, SW Illinois News, West Central Reporter and West Cook News. Not included in the IPA’s list is the Will County Gazette, but its website is nearly identical in layout and design to the other papers’ websites. It also lists the same publisher, Locality Labs. The IPA issued a statement saying the papers are not members of the association, nor are they eligible for inclusion: Obviously, the IPA respects the First Amendment protections of freedom of speech and freedom of the press which allows each of us the right to speak freely, and publish newspapers or newsletters if we wish. While imitation is the highest form of flattery, the IPA cautions readers to become as news literate as possible; that is, to try to determine the source behind the news and information they receive and to question the legitimacy, integrity and intent of both the source and the message. “I echo the IPA’s warning that everyone who receives these publications seriously question their integrity,” said Bertino-Tarrant in a news release. “This is not about the First Amendment, this is about a super PAC going to extreme lengths to mislead people in order to push a political agenda.” The network of fake papers were found by the Illinois State Board of Elections to be in violation of the Campaign Disclosure Act for not including “paid for” attributions and in violation of Illinois law that prohibits Independent Expenditure PACs from colluding with candidates for the newspapers’ interviews with single-party candidates, Bertino-Tarrant said. “Despite the Board’s rulings, the fake papers continue to conduct interviews with candidates and multiple print editions of the papers, including The Will County Gazette and DuPage Policy Journal, fail to list a ‘paid for,’” she said. Locality Labs is reportedly run by Brian Timpone, who did not return a phone message seeking information on the newspapers. Emails sent to the Will County Gazette and the DuPage Policy Journal were not returned. The websites do not list a phone number. Timpone previously ran Journatic, which was fired by the Chicago Tribune for plagiarism and using fake bylines, according to Crain’s Chicago Business. Will County Republican State Senate Candidate Michelle Smith has appeared in the Will County Gazette and the DuPage Policy Journal numerous times, according to Bertino-Tarrant. Smith’s campaign spokesman, Jack DeMeulenaere, said it’s important to reach out directly to voters. “Which is why our campaign conducts interviews with a variety of news organizations and citizens groups, in compliance with election laws,” he said in an email to Patch. Bertino-Tarrant is asking all candidates to sever any communications with the papers. “Voters deserve integrity with their news, not political propaganda masquerading as news,” she said in a news release.)

— Journalism’s double standard  Major media go rogue in siding with Clinton against Trump – Joseph A. Morris
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/aug/11/journalisms-double-standard-covering-hillary-clint/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Every time a David Duke or some other marginal Klan-connected or neo-Nazi lowlife crawls out from under a rock and gratuitously endorses Donald Trump (or anyone else, particularly a Republican or a conservative), the mainstream media call breathless attention to the news. They further demand that Mr. Trump or the other endorsee renounce the unsolicited and unwanted endorsement.  It’s a brilliant stratagem by the media. There is an inexhaustible supply of otherwise ignored extremists who rise to the bait: Endorsing Donald Trump or a respectable Republican or conservative is the one sure way for a bigot or an extremist to get a minute’s worth of air time and six inches of ink. It also has the effect of tainting the supposedly supported candidate by association and advances the meme that Mr. Trump, the Republican Party or the conservative movement somehow makes it safe for racists, anti-Semites and bigots of all stripes to strut their stuff among decent people. But when the father of the homosexual-hating jihadi who killed 49 people at a nightclub in Orlando showed up at a Clinton rally, applauded the Democratic presidential nominee and her campaign, the media played it quite differently. Hillary Clinton responded to questions not by repudiating the endorsement or the father’s suggestion that it was actually unnecessary for his son to kill the gays he targeted because Allah himself would have taken care of them in due time, but by saying merely that the campaign neither invited him nor knew he would be at the rally. Somehow, that was deemed an adequate response. And now, a left-wing David Duke of the most extreme variety has endorsed Mrs. Clinton. Yet it has neither raised the hackles of the media nor resulted in demands that her campaign explain or denounce the endorsement. Her endorser is no less a figure than the chairman of the Communist Party of the United States.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— CPS layoffs have hundreds of teachers looking for work – Andy Grimm  (DIERSEN: Social studies teacher Robert DiPrima was shocked at being cut.  My critics/opponents would hint/imply/argue/shout that I should have anticipated that my Democrat GAO Superiors were going to succeed in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” that expired on September 30, 1997. They had always ranked me in the lower half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, they had not promoted me since 1986, they had kept me off audits of IRS 1980-1985 and since 1988, they had forced me to take an $18,459 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980, etc.  Further, in August and September of 1997, they acted like one of my Democrat subordinates who was a minority had threatened to leave GAO unless GAO got rid of me and gave him my job and gave him my preferred corner office.  Of course, needless-to-say, my critics/opponents side with my Democrat GAO superiors and my Democrat GAO subordinate.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Social studies teacher Robert DiPrima carried a sheaf of resumes — and a heavy heart — to a CPS job fair at International Union of Operating Engineers Local 399 in the South Loop on Thursday. People acted like their heads were going to explode just because 18-year-old future Harvard student was twerking at the concert and skipped out on the Democratic National Convention in the first place. And now, in a celebrity gossip website Radar Online that seems to be owned and operated by the Kardashian family, they posted Tuesday showing Malia Obama allegedly smoking something at the same concert. Radar claims it was marijuana. Social media brushed away the so-called episode as frivolous, trivial and not worthy of coverage and blasted Radar and other outlets for trying to shame an 18-year-old acting like she was … well … 18.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Members of the movement to free the delegates from presidential candidate Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention failed, but their efforts haven’t completely subsided. In email and phone calls to supporters of the anti-Trump movement, the group Free the Delegates has its sights set on another way to replace Trump as the party’s nominee — by invoking Republican National Committee rules that would allow members to replace the nominee aside from just “death, declination or otherwise” beginning with a written petition that includes signatures of at least 16 RNC members from 16 states. The group’s executive director, Regina Thompson, said that the effort was still “a work in progress like anything else of this nature is.” “This is the only avenue left within the RNC rules,” Thompson said in an interview with TheBlaze. “We’re committed to working within the Republican Party process and this is the next step — and only step — left within the rules to change the nominee.” The free-the-delegates movement has placed emphasis on the RNC rules that allow for it to fill “vacancies which may occur by reason of death, declination, or otherwise” — with the “otherwise” clause serving as their catalyst. And in order to try to recall and replace Trump, they must get the RNC to hold a meeting by submitting a written petition with at least 16 committee members’ signatures from at least 16 states. Thompson told TheBlaze that the group’s request and petition have been emailed to almost every RNC member and that the group is now in the process of following up with those members. Free the Delegates has sent emails to supporters to request volunteers for help in contacting members.)

http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2016/08/11/facebook-news-feed-informative-posts-more-weight/88563800/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Facebook is altering the formula that determines what its 1.71 billion users see when they log into the social network to give priority to posts that make them feel informed, the Silicon Valley tech giant said Thursday. It’s the latest in a series of changes to guide Facebook users to compelling content — be it status updates from friends, news articles about current events or the latest about their favorite celebrity —  that sucks them in longer and keeps them coming back. Facebook says its goal is to put the updates that are most important and relevant to each individual user highest in their News Feed, yet Facebook users often complain that News Feed, coming up on its 10th anniversary, doesn’t know what they want to see at the top of their News Feed. News Feed is critical to Facebook’s success. The more time users spend in it, the more ads Facebook can show them. Last week, Facebook said it was weeding out junk by cracking down on “clickbait,” articles with misleading or vague headlines that lure people into clicking on them. In June, Facebook said it would give preference to posts from friends and family over content from public figures and publishers.)

GOPUSA
— Pandering to illegals
http://www.gopusa.com/?p=13622
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a bid to continue the ineffectual immigration legacy of President Obama, if not a pander for Hispanic votes, Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton vows to, if elected, introduce comprehensive immigration “reform” within her first 100 days in office. Already that’s “luring (immigrant) families to the U.S. and wrecking innocent lives,” according to a statement from the National Border Patrol Council. The labor union representing 16,500 workers says what Mrs. Clinton proposes would be worse than Mr. Obama’s “disastrous” amnesty. More executive actions would add chaos at the southern border, providing cover for drug cartels and Islamic extremists to gain entry, according to the Border Patrol council, which backs GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump. “We are already seeing a massive influx of activity on our southern border,” according to the council. As it is, Obama’s pockmarked “pathway to citizenship” led to state lawsuits, a federal judge’s injunction and finally a deadlocked Supreme Court. Now Clinton vows to expand Obama’s executive actions on immigration, USA Today reports. Any comprehensive “reform” begins with Congress — not with empty campaign promises from either candidate. And until the people’s representatives determine what those reforms should be, it is the president’s sworn duty to uphold this nation’s immigration laws.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Top Illinois GOP donor William Kunkler: Hopes Trump is ‘humiliated’ on Election Day – Rick Pearson  (DIERSEN: Anti-Trumps are counting on Trump to lose big time in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, in Illinois, and in America.  Of course, anti-Trumps are already making plans to a) first get rid of Trump supporters in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, in Illinois, and in America and b) then get rid of all those in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, in Illinois, and in America who do not share their hatred of Trump.  If you are a member any of the following groups and you are not shouting your hated of Trump, the anti-Trumps will get rid of you: Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, and/or your whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.  If you are of German national origin and/or if you are a draft dodger, you are in especially big trouble.  Anti-Trumps are moral relativists who believe that their end justifies their means.  Anti-Trumps are disciples of Saul Alinsky. If/when the anti-Trumps come to destroy you, what will you do?)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-donald-trump-illinois-donor-humiliated-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A veteran Republican campaign donor who’s pushing for immigration reform says he hopes “Trump and his supporters are humiliated” on Election Day. William Kunkler, a private equity executive who backed Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s unsuccessful bid for the Republican presidential nomination, said he wasn’t voting for the GOP nominee and expected Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton would become president and move quickly to push immigration changes. “Republicans will be licking their wounds after the effects of Trump leading the ticket and should be willing to deal with (Clinton) on sensible reform,” Kunkler, co-chair of the Illinois Business Immigration Council, said at a panel hosted by the group and FWD.us, the immigration advocacy organization founded by Facebook Chairman Mark Zuckerberg. Kunkler — who backed and helped bundle campaign cash for previous GOP nominees including Arizona Sen. John McCain and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney — was one of the few speakers to openly mention Trump by name to an audience at the tech incubator TechNexus in the Lyric Opera building. From the launch of his campaign in June of last year, Trump has vowed to build a wall on the Mexican border, called some immigrants from Mexico “criminals” and “rapists,” proposed to ban Muslims from immigrating and later expanded his plan to include immigrants from counties engaged in supporting terrorism. Calling Trump’s rhetoric “ugly and hateful,” Kunkler noted “the number of Latinos registered to vote has increased substantially (from 2012), and the turnout of this group is expected to be much higher to fight back against Trump. I support that fight and hope Trump and his supporters are humiliated at the polls.” John Rowe, former chairman of Exelon Corp. and another co-chair of the business council, said he found this election season “especially challenging for those of us who generally vote Republican.” Along with belief in “moderate taxes (and) individual responsibility,” Rowe said like-minded Republicans “also believe in people.” “We have an opportunity as a country to continue to make this melting pot work. It’s a challenge. We have no alternative but to make it work,” he said. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, who represents the Miami area, appeared on a panel with Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk, North Shore Rep. Robert Dold and state Senate GOP leader Christine Radogno. The Florida congressman said he was optimistic a comprehensive reform plan that addressed border security and people in this country illegally could be accomplished. Kirk and Dold have said they do not support Trump, while Diaz-Balart has said he will vote for the GOP nominee. “Eventually the (critical) noise has to settle, the window of opportunity will open — it doesn’t have to open much — and it requires the extremes to kind of just shut the hell up,” Diaz-Balart said. “I’m convinced that noise, which is a lot of noise, is a small part of our country.” Radogno said the “red meat” being fed low-information voters about immigrants and immigration needs to be replaced with education. “I think that one of the worst things that we can do, and we see that going on right now and we see it in both parties, is making immigration a political issue, and what we do is feed people’s lack of information, the misinformation that they have. I think if people are educated, they understand … that immigration makes sense from an economic perspective, from a business perspective.”)
— Who’s financing the fight against fair legislative maps? – Editorial  (DIERSEN: Who are your critics/opponents?  How much religious, government, political, and/or financial clout do they have? How much money and other things of value do they promise/give their operatives and their dupes to destroy you?  Operatives and dupes for my critics/opponents talk and act like they been promised lots of money, a new home, a new car, a sweetheart job, a sweetheart contract, favorable legislation, and lots more if they succeed in destroying me.)

— SNEED: Malia’s timing? Hmmm. The web was burning up with a RadarOnline report Wednesday first daughter Malia Obama, 18, was snapped smoking what looked like pot while twerking away at Lollapalooza in Chicago on Sunday, July 31. But hang on. Here’s a timeline: Longtime pal/attorney Brendan O’Connor left Sneed a phone message that Sunday to report he had just spotted Malia and her girlfriends at Lollapalooza at 4 p.m.; observed them for about 45 minutes; noted the retinue of Secret Service agents; and was stunned by Malia’s impressive composure. “Let me tell you, the Obamas would be very proud of the classy way Malia was handling herself,” O’Connor’s phone message stated. “I did not engage with them, but I was only 20 feet away,” O’Connor told Sneed on Wednesday, shortly after the alleged pot story broke. “Malia was sitting on the lawn with six girlfriends like normal kids, no VIP treatment. No guys in tow. All very respectful, and all behaving better than the average idiots attending the concerts. The Secret Service had a perimeter around her. And no one appeared to be drinking or smoking. They had walked around to see the group Years & Years and the singer Halsey.” Less than an hour later, RadarOnline claimed, Malia was tagged by a witness inhaling what smelled like pot passed to her by some guy while watching the Bryson Tiller concert. “I’d be very surprised,” said O’Connor. “The Secret Service may have been wearing casual shirts and summer shorts, but they were out in full force.” Well, hey.

MONEY MAGAZINE
— Donald Trump Says He’s OK With Losing the Election – Alexandra Mondalek  (DIERSEN: Of course, needless-to-say, if/when Trump loses, anti-Trumps will first destroy Trump’s supporters and then they will destroy those who do not hate Trump.)
http://time.com/money/4448134/donald-trump-ok-losing-election/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On Thursday while calling in to CNBC’s “Squawk Box” morning show, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said he’s “ok” with losing the election. “All I do is tell the truth, and if at the end of 90 days I’ve fallen short because I’m somewhat politically correct, even though I’m supposed to be the smart one, and even though I’m supposed to have a lot of good ideas, it’s ok, you know, I go back to a, a very good way of life. It’s not what I’m looking to do I think we’re going to have a victory, but we’ll see.” The most recent Real Clear Politics poll shows Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton ahead of Trump by almost eight points, echoing Trump’s implication: He may very well lose. Of course, the poll numbers follow a series of gaffes the GOP nominee has made in the last few weeks, including making off-kilter comments on sexual harassment and insulting a Gold Star military family. Consistent with his past behavior, Trump hasn’t apologized for the political missteps, either. So, what would Trump do after the election? He could go back to managing his real estate business, though he’s not hurting for work (even though Trump-branded businesses have suffered.) He’s currently worth about $4.5 billion — or $10 billion, according to him.)

DAILY HERALD
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD WITH COLOR PHOTO OF GRIFFIN: Wide range of rules on what teacher classes taxpayers cover – Jake Griffin  (DIERSEN: Officially, the federal government encourages its employees to take job-related courses.  However, while I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, the agencies that I worked for either had no tuition reimbursement program or one that provided only token reimbursement. Nevertheless, while I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, spent lots of my own time and money taking courses to earn a job-related bachelor’s degree, three job-related master’s degrees, and two job-related professional certifications. However, my Democrat superiors, Democrat supervisors, Democrat coworkers, and Democrat subordinates in the federal government always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that the courses that I took a) were not job-related, b) did not help me carry out my job duties, c) were taken by me to get a job in the private sector, and/or d) were a distraction.  They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, or a veteran.  To keep their jobs or to get promoted, my Democrat superiors, Democrat supervisors, Democrat coworkers, and Democrat subordinates in the federal government focused on wasting the careers of and getting rid of federal employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160810/news/160808971/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Daily Herald analysis of 92 suburban school district teacher contracts showed 70 with some type of tuition reimbursement program for educators. As in District 41, a vetting process of the coursework is nearly ubiquitous in all the contracts, but that process varies widely. Most contracts allow teachers to be reimbursed only for classes that count toward an advanced degree or have practical applications to the classes they teach or could teach in the future. District 41’s University of La Verne courses aren’t part of an advanced degree program. Critics of tuition reimbursement programs said school boards and administrators should pay closer attention to these policies, since teachers’ education levels are directly tied to their salary and pension costs. “When you are tying compensation to the number of classes taken and completed, that seems to be the wrong measurement,” said David From, Illinois state director for Americans for Prosperity, a national tax policy reform organization. “It should be tied to how good you are. It’s doing our kids a disservice and it’s certainly doing taxpayers a disservice.” Teachers union officials argue everyone, including taxpayers, benefits from increased education for a school district’s teachers, particularly when those classes are germane to what they teach.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2016/08/10/dont-forget-civil-servants-during-the-presidential-transition/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the heat of a bizarre presidential campaign, the horse race makes it easy to forget that the point of politics is governing. And when we think of the next administration, we often focus on who will get the top political appointments. But to govern effectively, any administration needs to consider civil servants, particularly during the transition, when they will play an enhanced role until new political appointees are in place. Max Stier, president and chief executive of the good-government Partnership for Public Service, calls career federal employees the “vital engine” that keeps government going. “The reality is the career workforce is the continuous thread across administrations,” he said. “They’re the people who know how it works and how things get done.” Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump should not forget them. The Presidential Transitions Improvements Act, signed by President Obama in March, recognizes their importance and calls for each agency to appoint a senior career employee to oversee and implement transition activities.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The mainstream media have gone to great lengths to avoid reporting on controversies with the potential to damage President Obama’s reputation or legacy. The endeavor to politicize the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) became an article of impeachment against Richard Nixon in 1974. But the actual politicization of the IRS under Barack Obama is treated as a phony scandal ginned up by Fox News, talk radio and the tea party movement. So it’s no surprise that recent news stories about the IRS scandal have been met with nearly complete silence from the mainstream media. The goal is clear: if the media ignore this scandal long enough, it will be treated and dismissed as old news.)

MONEY MAGAZINE
— Why Trump and Clinton Need to Join the Conversation on Retirement Security – Dan Kadlec
http://time.com/money/4445086/trump-clinton-retirement-security/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Imagine if the candidates harped on the savings and retirement crisis. Even though 20% of Americans have no retirement savings, only 8% list retirement security as a top concern, the survey found. The Government Accountability Office has found that about half of all households near retirement age have zero retirement savings and no pension other than Social Security. So where is this conversation among our would-be leaders? The public is more than ready. Some 68% of American workers complained last fall that presidential hopefuls were not talking enough about retirement issues, according to a poll from the Financial Services Roundtable. In a major speech on the economy this week, Republican nominee Trump didn’t utter a single word about retirement, longevity or aging. Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s forthcoming speech on the economy isn’t likely to raise the issue either. Her website talks about retirement almost exclusively in terms of Social Security, which she vows to expand by raising taxes on the wealthy. This at least acknowledges the savings crisis. But it also suggests a woeful misunderstanding of how to fix it.)
