— If you haven’t had health insurance … – Editorial (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes are beyond furious that my wife and I get an $18,000/year health, dental, and vision insurance subsidy because I am a federal retiree. We pay only $6,000/year for $24,000/year worth of coverage. In our defense, I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years — almost 3 for the Post Office 1966-1969, almost 9 for IRS 1971-1980, and almost 18 for GAO. Working for the federal government is extremely unpleasant, stressful, and depressing. Virtually everyone viciously demonizes, viciously denigrates, and viciously condemns federal employees and federal retirees as being lazy, stupid, grossly overpaid, and even worse things. Many millions have not and will not seek a job with the federal government a) because the pay and benefits are terrible, b) because the advancement opportunities are terrible, c) because they lack required education, work experience, professional certifications, and/or professional licenses, d) because they cannot pass an employment examination, e) because they cannot pass a background investigation, f) because they cannot pass a physical examination, g) because they cannot take the demonization, denigration, and condemnation that comes with being a federal employee or federal retiree, and/or h) because they are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and they know that the federal government discriminates against the aforesaid.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Its a nearly-new fuel pump from a 2003 Harley Davidson with just 11,000 miles on it. How could that much corrosion happen on a motorcycle before it’s third oil change? According to my mechanic it’s ethanol in our gasoline. To understand how this happens you need to know how ethanol affects your fuel system. Ethanol itself is not particularly corrosive. When the oil companies first started blending ethanol in gas, it corroded some rubber and plastic gaskets on some cars and equipment. Manufacturers figured it out and substituted new materials. The unlucky consumers whose equipment was ruined or whose fuel systems had to be replaced just took it on the chin as per usual with most government programs. But that wasn’t the end of it. Ethanol attracts water. When the two get together, they create the perfect environment to grow a type of bacteria called acetobacter. After getting drunk on their EPA-sponsored kegger in your gas tank, the acetobacter excrete acetic acid. And acetic acid is very corrosive. If you’re refilling your gas tank every week or two, acetobacter don’t have time to grow a sufficient size colony to damage metal parts in your fuel system. But if your fuel sits for longer periods of time these microorganisms continue to multiply until your gas tank contains damaging levels of acetic acid.)
