https://www.wsj.com/articles/facebook-twitter-solicit-outside-groups-often-on-the-right-to-referee-political-speech-11546966779
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The world’s biggest social-media companies, under fire for failing to police content on their sites, have invited an array of outside groups to help them figure out who should be banned and what’s considered unacceptable. That solution is creating a new set of problems—public fights, complaints and legal battles. Silicon Valley giants Facebook Inc., Twitter Inc. and Google’s YouTube unit have made a concerted push to seek out input from hundreds of groups, a growing number of which lean to the right. The companies have become receptive to behind-the-scenes lobbying as well. Among the initiatives, Facebook has privately sought advice from the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian public-policy group, and its president Tony Perkins, according to people familiar with those meetings. Twitter’s Chief Executive Jack Dorsey recently hosted dinners with conservatives, including Grover Norquist, the founder and president of Americans for Tax Reform, which advocates for lower taxes. Advisers on the left include the Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil-rights group that keeps a list of hate groups. For users frustrated by the lack of clarity around how these companies make decisions, the added voices have made matters even murkier. Meetings between companies and their unofficial advisers are rarely publicized, and some outside groups and individuals have to sign nondisclosure agreements. And in many cases, posts that are hateful to one group are considered fair game—or even uncomfortable truths—to others on the opposite end of the spectrum, opening a whole new arena to continue the political and ideological fights that are often a staple of social media.)

DUPAGE POLICY JOURNAL
— Ives says state GOP should go back to basics – Glenn Minnis
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511717576-ives-says-state-gop-should-go-back-to-basics
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) thinks it is time Republican lawmakers have a meeting of the minds to have any chance of saving themselves from themselves. “Republican Party leadership should meet and openly discuss [outgoing Gov. Bruce] Rauner’s wholesale betrayal and ineptitude,” Ives, who narrowly lost to Rauner in the Republican primary, told the DuPage Policy Journal. “The result should be throwing out the current head of the Illinois GOP [IGLOP}, Tim Schneider.” With Illinois in dire straits and many voters desperate for change, Ives said, Republican leaders should consider it a personal insult that the party did as poorly as it did in November’s general election, when Democrats easily captured both chambers of the legislature in Springfield as well as the governorship. “The ILGOP’s massive inability to win campaigns in the worst-run state in the nation is embarrassing,” she said. “Every aspect of our campaigns should be reassessed.” According to the Illinois Review, Ives joined Sean Morrison, Cook County GOP chairman and Cook County commissioner, in calling for immediate action. The two have been publicly backed by John McGlasson, an Illinois GOP State Central Committee member. Ives said many of the party’s issues could be solved by Republicans simply electing to be real Republicans again. “We have a party platform,” she said. “If leaders and candidates would agree to uphold the well-thought-out tenets of the Republican Party platform, there would be no division.” Finally, Ives said, it is time that Republican lawmakers make sure voters are well aware of why the state is as bad off as it is right now. “Our minority status in the legislature gives us an opportunity to place the blame squarely where it belongs, on the Democrats who have run this state into a fiscal mess,” she said.)

— Rauner talks about the current state of the GOP and its future
https://capitolfax.com/2019/01/08/rauner-talks-about-the-current-state-of-the-gop-and-its-future/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Speaking of politics, Rauner refused to comment on who should run for governor next, but said he hoped “reform-minded leaders” would step forward, saying he would “encourage them” and perhaps help them. He appeared to wave off a direct return to politics for himself, but said it’s “yet to be determined” what he would do. “We live in such volatile times. I can’t predict yet what makes sense.” When asked about former Gov. Jim Edgar’s admonition that the party choose a moderate and Rep. Jeanne Ives’ warning that the party needs to choose someone who will adhere to the party’s conservative platform, Rauner said the two “are both right [and] they’re both partly wrong, and unfortunately I think they’re both part of the problem”… Republicans won’t win unless we’re moderate in many ways on many things. And I certainly consider myself a moderate on many things. If you look at my record, and the things I’ve advocated and the bills I’ve signed, most people would say I’m a moderate. That said, if you’re gonna be a moderate to win elections, but you’re not going to be a reformer and fix the problems, what’s the point of winning? And, in Illinois, Republicans have won, in the 80s and 90s, but then they did the same bad stuff that the Democrats did. Kick the can on pension payments, don’t reform the system, raise taxes with no reforms, over-regulate businesses. If you’re gonna moderate to win and then do the same thing that the guy or gal that you were running against would do, what’s the point? And I think Rep. Ives is correct that you got to have some principles, and you’ve got to be fiscally responsible/conservative… balance budgets. To me, I hope the Republican Party rallies around a unifying message of being pro-taxpayer and pro-job-creator. I think that can be a unifying message and that should define the party. The other things, we’re going to have some vehement disagreements on. Obviously, some of my fellow party members disagree with me on some of my more moderate views. OK, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t all be Republicans and push for responsible things for taxpayers and for job-creators. And he had a few words about the president… “I support most of the President’s policy goals … and I’m appalled by his personal behavior. Just appalled.” Specifically, Rauner says he agrees on ending “illegal” immigration, with a focus on the “illegal”)

https://www.forbes.com/sites/impactpartners/2019/01/07/financial-liquid-courageand-why-you-need-it/#4342529c9072
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Building a tax-efficient retirement strategy takes preparation, and keeping your tax-deferred accounts under a certain dollar amount is key to this preparation. Just when Uncle Sam forces a required minimum distribution (RMD) from that 401(k) or IRA at age 70 ½ and beyond, with the right plan, you can enjoy maximum tax-free benefits. In addition, maximizing the balance of your Roth accounts from annual contributions and Roth conversions may also give you a jump in these benefits. Consider scheduling an appointment with a CPA or licensed financial professional. Have them calculate your current gross income that you expect to receive from pensions, retirement plan withdrawals, income from taxable plans, the taxable portion of your Social Security, and any other deductions you are eligible for. You’ve worked hard for your money, so make your money work hard AND smarter for you! Make sure your retirement years are golden years, not yearning years, with some good ol’ “financial liquid courage.”)

https://www.chicagotribune.com/classified/automotive/sc-auto-cover-muscle-cars-20181225-story.html

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Retail sales of large passenger cars, a segment that includes the Nissan Maxima and Chevy Impala, is down 21 percent in 2018, according to J.D. Power. The Ford Mustang, the top-selling muscle car in America, was down a modest 3.6 percent through last month. . .Another factor contributing to the potential decline in muscle cars is an aging population. Most muscle cars are owned by Baby Boomers, the youngest of who are in their mid-50s, the Associated Press reported in September. As Boomers continue to age, it is likely they will have less money and less interest in muscle cars. The question is if a new generation of drivers raised on high-riding and numb driving crossovers will appreciate the muscle behind these cars.)

— It’s time to fix Social Security’s tax burden – LIZ WESTON
https://www.dailyherald.com/business/20181230/its-time-to-fix-social-securitys-tax-burden
(FROM THE ARTICLE: People on Social Security need a tax break. The rest of us need to make sure they get it — for everyone’s sake. When Congress made Social Security benefits taxable in 1983, lawmakers didn’t index the tax thresholds to inflation. They “forgot” inflation again when adding a second layer of taxation in 1993. That means the proportion of recipients who have to pay federal income taxes on their benefits keeps increasing. Initially, only 1 in 10 Social Security recipients had to pay any federal tax. Now, it’s over half. Not indexing to inflation is a sneaky way of boosting taxes. Lawmakers can count on growing federal revenue without the politically uncomfortable act of repeatedly voting for those increases. The taxes are based on combined income, which is a taxpayer’s adjusted gross income, plus any tax-exempt interest (such as interest on mutual bonds) and half of her Social Security benefit.)

http://kanecountyconnects.com/2019/01/hey-are-you-65-or-over-want-to-defer-up-to-5000-on-your-property-tax/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The program allows qualified senior citizens to defer all or part of their 2018 property taxes up to $5,000 on their personal residence. Applications must be filed with the Treasurer’s office by March 1, 2019, in order to defer 2018 taxes billed in 2019. To qualify, a person must be 65 or over by June 1, 2019, have a total household income of $55,000 or less, and have lived in the property for at least three years. In addition, there must be no delinquent taxes on the property. Also, if the property is subject to a mortgage then your mortgage company would also have to approve your participation in the program. Qualified taxpayers can defer taxes totaling up to 80 percent of the equity interest they have in the home. The program provides funding at a six percent simple interest rate which doesn’t require repayment until the taxpayer sells the property or until after the taxpayer’s death.)

AMERICAN THINKER
— Era of the Trumper Tantrum – William L. Gensert
https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2019/01/era_of_the_trumper_tantrum.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mothers and fathers drag their six and seven-year-old children 2,000 miles to the border of another country and scream, “Let me in!” And when those children die — one after the father refuses medical care — the media stand up, stamp their feet, and angrily scream the question, “How could you?” But their ire is directed at America, not at the criminally negligent parents, because it’s our country’s responsibility to honor and obey whatever a tantrum thrower insists is his right. Who can blame them? It worked in Europe, where hundreds of thousands of fighting-age young men escaping the internecine brutality endemic to the Religion of Peace have forced themselves upon what used to be independent nations (and in particular, their infidel women) with seemingly nothing but joy expressed by the political elite who applaud the entire “shebang” (pun intended). The forever angry and outraged Democrats, historically anti-illegal immigration when they thought aliens would provide cheap labor benefitting industry (can’t have profits unless they get to give the money to friends and family), are now pro-illegal alien who come here for benefits and are willing to vote illegally. They are merely disappointed in voters who allowed the Orange Man to steal Hillary’s presidency, and damn it, they are going to import a new electorate.)

And on Jan. 1, Labor began accepting applications for H-2Bs for summer 2019 on a first-come, first-serve basis. Employers are so eager for workers they submitted more than 97,800 requests in the first five minutes of 2019. That shattered last year’s record of 81,000. But Congress guarantees only 66,000 H-2Bs annually, divided between the summer and winter seasons, and there are already nearly three requests pending for each available visa for this summer. For the past two years Congress has also failed to reauthorize a returning worker program that allowed some past recipients of H-2B visas to work another season with the old boss without contributing to the cap number.)

https://www.adweek.com/digital/people-who-share-news-articles-trust-them-but-people-who-research-them-dont/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation teamed up with analytics firm Gallup on an experiment to examine the level of trust in news articles being shared over the internet, both from the people doing the sharing and the people receiving those links and looking into matters further. This study was conducted using Gallup’s experimental news aggregation website, which regularly collects news stories from seven major news outlets across the political spectrum: left-leaning (The New York Times, Vox, Media Matters), neutral (The Associated Press) and right-leaning (100PercentFedUp, Breitbart News, Fox News). . .The average trust rating for those 1,225 articles was a 4.0 out of 5.0—with 71 percent of those articles receiving trust ratings of 4.0 or higher—while the average trust rating for the 2,227 articles researched further in the group who wanted to learn more was just a 3.1. Overall, the average trust rate per user in the sharing group was a 3.9, dropping to a 3.2 in the group who wanted to learn more. The Knight Foundation and Gallup said that while both test groups came in slightly below the U.S. Census estimate that some 40 percent of Americans identified as Republican or leaning Republican as of July, the heavier Democratic presence was not a factor in determining the most frequently read news sources in the study. The AP was the source behind 49 percent of articles readers wanted to share and 40 percent that enticed readers to find out more. Meanwhile, the three right-leaning publications were the source of 29 percent of shared articles and 38 percent of readers who wanted to find out more, and those numbers were 23 percent and 23 percent, respectively, for the three left-leaning media sources.)

January 3 Morning Edition

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— How did you respond or how will you respond the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) survey questions (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LBGPSVC)? Initial questions concerning this survey include: Who is exactly paying for this survey? When did you first learn that this survey was going to be conducted and who did you learn that from? Who developed the survey? What input did you, your Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain, the officers of your Republican township/ward/county party organizations, your representative on the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee, the IRP officers, the IRP National Committeeman, and the IRP National Committeewoman have in the development of this survey? Where is the document that details the methodology used for this survey? What has been done to publicize this survey? Of course, anti-conservatives want liberals and moderates to respond to the survey and NOT conservatives. What about liberal and moderate responders who falsely claim to be conservative? I responded to the survey as follows:

1. How often do you work and/ or interact with the Illinois Republican Party? – Extremely Frequently (Daily)

  1. What role do you play in the Republican Party? – Precinct Committeemen

  1. How active would you consider yourself within your GOP organization? – Extremely active (Daily)

  1. Is there anything specific the Illinois Republican Party can help you and/ or your organization with? – Other (please specify) Promoting the IRP platform.

  1. What could the Illinois Republican Party do better to increase your activity and interest within your local regular Republican organization? – Promote the IRP platform.

  1. How active would you say your GOP organization(s) is/are? – They meet monthly and regularly are represented at community events.

  1. Please check the answer that best describes your political philosophy on fiscal policy matters: Conservative

  1. Please check the box that best describes your political philosophy on social policy matters: Conservative

  1. The most important public policy issues facing our state are: Pro-Life, Same-sex marriage (oppose), Second Amendment issues (oppose gun control), Other (please specify) Enforce immigration laws (support)

  1. The most important public policy issues facing our country are: Pro-Life, Illegal immigration (concerned about), Second Amendment issues (oppose gun control), Other (please specify) Traditional marriage (support)

  1. Who did you vote for in the 2018 Illinois gubernatorial Republican primary election? – Jeanne Ives / Rich Morthland

  1. What are the biggest challenges to unity in the Illinois Republican Party? – Stopping anti-conservative IRP leaders from driving conservatives out of the IRP

  1. With respect to the Illinois Republican Party platform, the Illinois Republican Party at its next quadrennial Convention in 2020 should: Adopt the platform of the national Republican Party as the platform of the Illinois Republican Party

  1. Why do Illinois Republicans lose elections? – Illinois Republican candidates are not conservative enough and do not energize enough of the Republican base. Illinois Democrat candidates typically have more campaign funds than Illinois Republican candidates. Districts are too gerrymandered for Illinois Republicans to be competitive in areas where they otherwise should be.

  1. What do you think are the most important things the Illinois Republican Party can do to promote unity? – Promote the IRP platform.

  1. If you were to define or message what it means to be a Republican to the voters of Illinois; what would that message be? – Promote traditional marriage and the traditional family. Promote the right to life. Enforce immigration laws. Promote Second Amendment rights.
  2. What is your first and last name? – David Diersen

  1. What is your email address? – diersen@aol.com

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— Outgoing Illinois state Sen. Kyle McCarter was (finally) confirmed Wednesday on voice vote to be U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Kenya, according to a tweet by the U.S. Senate Republican Cloakroom staff. McCarter was nominated March 28. Over his lifetime, McCarter has served as a missionary to Kenya. The Republican from Collinsville has held the 54th state Senate seat since 2009. He ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Congress in 2016. McCarter announced last year he wouldn’t seek re-election and was succeeded by Jason Plummer, also a Republican. State Rep. Dave McSweeney cheered his McCarter’s news on Twitter. “Senator Kyle McCarter is a great conservative leader in Illinois and will be a great Ambassador to Kenya!” – Shia Kapos

(FROM THE ARTICLE: To me, the explanation is that she’s from Naperville – which once was a part of the great DuPage County Republican organization that was among the strengths of the GOP nationwide. There once would have been a time when Stava-Murray would have been a Republican aspirant for political office – except that the Republicans have gone so far overboard to become the political party of rural America that I suspect if she had tried to run in the Republican primary last year, she’d have lost. They wouldn’t want her. She’s a Democrat by default! It may well be that Stava-Murray is showing off her political ignorance and doesn’t fully realize “which side” she’s on. For her sake, she’s going to have to figure things out and “pick a side,” or else it could turn into a bloody two years for her.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The HuffPost/YouGov poll consisted of 1,000 completed interviews conducted Dec. 28-30 among U.S. adults, using a sample selected from YouGov’s opt-in online panel to match the demographics and other characteristics of the adult U.S. population. HuffPost has teamed up with YouGov to conduct daily opinion polls. You can learn more about this project and take part in YouGov’s nationally representative opinion polling. More details on the polls’ methodology are available here (http://data.huffingtonpost.com/yougov/methodology). Most surveys report a margin of error that represents some, but not all, potential survey errors. YouGov’s reports include a model-based margin of error, which rests on a specific set of statistical assumptions about the selected sample rather than the standard methodology for random probability sampling. If these assumptions are wrong, the model-based margin of error may also be inaccurate. Click here for a more detailed explanation of the model-based margin of error. — Censoring China’s Internet, for Stability and Profit Thousands of low-wage workers in “censorship factories” trawl the online world for forbidden content, where even a photo of an empty chair could cause big trouble. – Li Yan (DIERSEN: Of course, I know exactly what articles my critics/opponents do NOT want me to include links to in GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails. Of course, I know exactly what comments my critics/opponents do NOT want me to make on those articles. My critics/opponents a) reject planks in the Republican Party platform and/or the Illinois Republican Party platform and work against those like me who support those planks, b) reject the Milton Township Republican Central Committee resolution against video gambling and work against those like me who support that resolution, c) focus on destroying those like me who they cannot manipulate/dominate, d) were defendants in lawsuits that I have filed, and/or e) are operatives or dupes for the aforesaid.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/02/business/china-internet-censor.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Li Chengzhi had a lot to learn when he first got a job as a professional censor. Like many young people in China, the 24-year-old recent college graduate knew little about the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown. He had never heard of China’s most famous dissident, Liu Xiaobo, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who died in custody two years ago. Now, after training, he knows what to look for — and what to block. He spends his hours scanning online content on behalf of Chinese media companies looking for anything that will provoke the government’s wrath. He knows how to spot code words that obliquely refer to Chinese leaders and scandals, or the memes that touch on subjects the Chinese government doesn’t want people to read about. Mr. Li, who still has traces of youthful acne on his face, takes his job seriously. “It helps cleanse the online environment,” he said. For Chinese companies, staying on the safe side of government censors is a matter of life and death. Adding to the burden, the authorities demand that companies censor themselves, spurring them to hire thousands of people to police content.)

MARKETING LAND
— Do brand politics impact consumer purchases? It’s complicated Multiple variables may affect how consumers react to brands that take a stand. – Greg Sterling (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, companies talk and act like they are operatives or dupes for the Democrat Party. Ever-increasingly, companies talk and act like they want to get rid of individuals, organizations, companies, governments, and countries that are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, draft avoiders, German American, and those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
https://marketingland.com/do-brand-politics-impact-consumer-purchases-its-complicated-252772
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A majority of consumers (63 percent), according to a new survey from SAP, say they prefer to purchase holiday gifts from brands that support specific social causes. This echoes earlier surveys that argue consumers increasingly want brands to take public social and political positions. The emerging consensus among marketers is that in the current climate brands are no longer able to “remain on the sidelines” and are compelled to stake out positions on controversial social issues. The most recent, high-profile example of this was Nike’s Just Do It anniversary campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick, which was controversial but actually helped Nike financially and with key audiences.)
