November 9 Morning Edition

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— The House tax plan benefits everyone – PETER ROSKAM  (DIERSEN: How old are you? I am 69. Do you itemize your deductions? If so, how much were your itemized deductions last year? For the Diersens, they were $30,890 — $13,859 medical and dental expenses, $14,303 real estate and state income taxes, and $2,728 charitable contributions. Last year, my 87-year-old aunt’s medical deductions were $74,050. One should expect that every year that you are older, the higher that your medical expenses will be. What do you say to my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes who demonize, denigrate, and condemn a) old people like me and b) those like my wife and I who itemize our deductions?)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20171109/OPINION/171109872
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Some have said that this plan would eviscerate the state and local tax deduction. This is simply not true. For Americans who choose to itemize, mortgage interest, property tax deductions and charitable contribution deductions are still available to them. This bill maintains the property tax deduction (up to $10,000), the mortgage interest deduction (for a loan up to $500,000) and the charitable deduction.)
— A stark—and sickening—reminder of how far women still have to go – DESIREE VARGAS WRIGLEY (DIERSEN: Desiree Vargas Wrigley should consider working for the federal government. She would have to take a tremendous pay cut, but sexual harassment would be far less of a problem. All federal employees are required to take lots of sexual harassment training. All during the almost 30 years that I worked for the federal government 1966-1969 and 1971-1997, I saw absolutely no sexual harassment. In the federal government, women are a member of a protected class and they are given lots of preferential treatment. Unlike the federal government’s non-veteran White male employees, its female employees are not subject to its “up-or-out” policy. The federal government wastes the careers of and gets rid of its non-veteran White male employees who do not make GS-13 (currently $94,610) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $111,801) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $131,508) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $161,900) by age 40.)

Changes made to the House bill since it was released last week have largely benefited corporations at the expense of individuals.)
— ‘Race’ exhibition at Chicago History Museum challenges what we think we know – Steve Johnson (DIERSEN: Who should pay the price of Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion? My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted a) that instead of me, the Post Office should have hired a minority in 1966, b) that the Post Office should gotten rid of me much sooner than it did so that a minority could have my job, c) that instead of me, IRS should have hired a minority in 1971, d) that instead of me, IRS should have promoted minorities in 1972, 1973, and 1974, e) that instead of me, GAO should have hired a minority in 1980, f) that instead of me, GAO should have promoted a minority in 1986, and g) that GAO should have gotten rid of me much sooner than it did so that a minority could have my job and my preferred corner office.)

QUAD CITIES ONLINE
— In Washington, tale of Robin Hood in reverse – Mark W. Schwiebert (DIERSEN: Who wants a) people who itemize their deductions to pay more federal income tax and b) people who take the standard deduction to pay less federal income tax? I itemized my deductions 1972-1977 and my wife and I have itemized our deductions since 1978. My critics/opponents have always wanted my wife and I to pay more federal income tax. They hint/imply/argue/shout a) that my wife and I were born with silver spoons in our mouths, b) that we have always been privileged, c) that the federal government grossly overpaid me, and d) that my federal pension and health/dental/vision insurance subsidies are too generous. They stress that I avoided the draft and that we gave up trying to have children, we did not adopt, and we did not become foster parents.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Among deductions targeted by the GOP are those for state and local taxes – something pretty important to residents of Illinois and Iowa. Likewise, Republican leaders propose repealing deductions for medical expenses including nursing home costs: some of the very expenses likely to go up for working families due to cuts in Medicare and Medicaid.)

CHICAGO CITY WIRE
— ‘Do we have the courage to be reasonable, to be kind?’ Proft describes politics as drying Illinois like a desert – Glenn Minnis (DIERSEN: What would your critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes say about you to Proft? Mine would say a) that I paid only $70,932 into the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) but the CSRS has already paid me $1,025,596 in today’s dollars, b) that I avoided the draft, c) that the federal government grossly overpaid me, d) that I have been married since 1978, e) that my wife has always had a good job, f) that I have not given Proft any money, g) that some/many might not pay $50/year for his newspapers because they get GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails free each and every morning and evening and without any advertising, h) etc.)
https://chicagocitywire.com/stories/511260887-do-we-have-the-courage-to-be-reasonable-to-be-kind-proft-describes-politics-as-drying-illinois-like-a-desert
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Proft discussed how 85 percent of families in Illinois say the state is on the wrong track and how half of them readily admit they’d rather be somewhere else. “If you think we can have public-sector employees pay $140,000 into the pension system and get $2 million back; if you think we have a revenue problem and not a spending problem; and if you think 32 years of the last 34 of Mike Madigan’s speakership is not a sufficient probationary period, then this speech is for you,” he said. Proft said the inconsistencies in the world of Illinois politics are glaring. “Every politician in both parties says, ‘I’m going to Springfield to provide state services because that’s what a civilized society does,’ but how is it until recently we were 51st out of 50 states, behind the District of Columbia, in providing services to people with developmental, intellectual disabilities,” he said. Adding insult to injury, Proft said a sizable portion of the state’s more than $16 billion in unpaid debt is owed to social services providers. Proft argued that Madigan has been able to control everything as long as he has because Republicans haven’t always fought the way they need to. “The reason Madigan has enjoyed his run is not because he’s genius: It is because the Republican Party is feckless, weak and surrenders,” he said. State poltics has become so divisive that it is tearing apart families, Proft contended. “Millennials are leading the exodus from this state,” he said. “The problem is, for the biggest investment middle-income families make in their lives — their homes — it’s not possible to get a rate of return on. We talk about businesses leaving, people leaving; people are leaving to go to states that keep their promises to families that have a member with developmental disabilities.” To Proft, that’s a clear indication it’s time state leaders change their focus. “We should be having a conversation about keeping our promises,” he said. “Instead of only talking about being No. 1 in job creation, maybe we should focus on being No. 1 in providing services that are a mirror of our humanity. We have become an unkind state, a barbaric state.” Proft sees another jarring example of that in the way Ford Heights, one of the state’s poorest communities, now boasts some of the highest property taxes. “This state is becoming a home equity desert, and it’s forcing people to leave and breaking up families,” he said.)

http://caselaw.findlaw.com/us-7th-circuit/1385001.html) The lawsuit involved the FOA, DOT authority to grant exemptions from the FOA, and the sufficiency of material facts that would make a dealer suspicious of a car’s mileage. On September 16, 1996, I presented oral arguments to Chief Judge Posner and to Circuit Court Judges Coffey and Kanne. On March 31, 1997, the Appellate Court agreed with me and ruled that DOT lacked authority to grant exemptions to the FOA, and that therefore, its exemption for cars over 10 years old was invalid.)

— Repeal of medical deduction prompts tax bill pushback – AP
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20171107/news/311079891/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The medical expense deduction targeted for repeal by GOP tax writers has helped to offset costs including nursing home care and fertility treatments, laser eye surgery and travel out-of-state for a second opinion on a rare cancer. Several million people unlucky enough to face big medical bills not covered by their insurance would lose a valuable deduction under the House GOP bill. Groups representing older people and patients are trying to save it. “Anybody who is paying for the cost of nursing home care is paying a great deal of money, and they are going to lose that deduction, and their taxes are going to go up,” said Thomas DeCoursey, a retired lawyer from Kansas, in his 70s. He relies on the deduction to help offset costs associated with nursing home care for his wife, who has Alzheimer’s. Some of his own medical expenses also factor in. DeCoursey estimates that in a couple of years their annual costs will pass $100,000. “There are a lot of people in my shoes,” said DeCoursey, who lives in Leawood, a well-to-do Kansas City suburb that voted for President Donald Trump last year. About 9 million households – 6 percent of tax filers – claim the medical expense deduction, said Gordon Mermin, a senior researcher at the nonpartisan Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center. The annual cost to the U.S. Treasury is about $10 billion, which ranks it as a modest tax break. Those who benefit tend to be middle-income and upper-middle-income people. “For the people who claim it, it is not a trivial benefit,” said Mermin. The medical expense deduction is also versatile. In addition to nursing home care, not generally covered by medical insurance plans, it can be used for: -Transportation expenses to a top hospital, like a comprehensive cancer center. -Some long-term care insurance premiums. -Installing specialized medical equipment in a patient’s home or vehicle. -Dental procedures. -Bills from out-of-network doctors. “When you are faced with large medical costs and don’t have a lot of options, this is one that helps people,” said Barbara Collura, president of RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association. Most insurance plans do not cover fertility treatments, which can cost from $15,000 to $30,000. The deduction can offset some of that cost. Advocacy groups pushing back against repeal may get help from the Senate.)

http://dailysignal.com/2017/11/07/new-bill-make-easier-fire-federal-employees/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: This is good news for taxpayers and federal employees alike. For taxpayers, it will mean a more productive federal workforce that will translate into lower federal personnel costs. And for federal employees, it will help weed out the bad actors that have given federal employees as a whole a bad rap. Federal employees are unfortunately often characterized as lazy, unproductive, or even defiant—but that’s not true of the overwhelming majority of federal workers. By reducing this negative stigma, the federal government would become more competitive with the private sector and could attract more skilled and productive employees. Federal personnel and compensation policies are uncompetitive, and in many ways, counterproductive. The Heritage Foundation has proposed a comprehensive set of reforms to bring federal compensation and employment more in line with the private sector. Increasing the probationary period for new federal hires is one step in the right direction toward a more competitive and productive federal workforce.)

https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/11/07/think-mass-shootings-are-terrorism-careful-what-you-wish-for-215797
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When applied to a nation’s own people, a list of banned domestic terrorists strongly tends to becomes a tool of state control. It works to suppress speech, association, and political action because any idea advanced by a proscribed group becomes anathematized. In the middle of the 20th century the federal government published a list of subversive organizations as part of a Federal Employee Loyalty Program, ostensibly to keep communists out of government and socialist ideology by denying or terminating their employment. The desired effect was not only to protect the infiltration of government by soviet agents and Marxist revolutionaries, but to suppress throughout American society lawful and non-violent political speech and action in support of political goals influenced by communist and socialist ideas. The Federal Employee Loyalty Program did not reach as far as material support regimes do. The federal government did not attempt to make it a crime to support the proscribed organizations. It deprived those who did of employment in government or of security clearances requisite to work in certain government jobs. It also led to “blacklists” that deprived people of working in certain industries.)

— Woman fired for flipping off Trump’s motorcade (DIERSEN: Constructively, my Democrat GAO superiors fired me in 1997 when I was 49 years old a) because I had become an active member in a class action lawsuit in 1988 that charged GAO with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation, b) because I had always complained about patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation, and c) because they were under tremendous pressure from Democrat politicians to get rid of their employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran. Previously, they had always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.)

NEW YORK TIMES
— Republican Plan Would Raise Taxes on Millions – Ben Casselman and Jim Tankersley (DIERSEN: Who wants you to pay more federal income tax? Ever-increasingly, ever since I became an IRS employee in 1971 when I was 22 years old, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have wanted me to pay more federal income tax. They are ever-increasingly furious that I have paid less federal income tax every year since 1972 because I itemize.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/06/business/republican-plan-would-raise-taxes-on-millions.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Nearly half of all middle-class families would pay more in taxes in 2026 than they would under current rules if the proposed House tax bill became law, and about one-third would pay more in 2018, according to a New York Times analysis, a striking finding for a bill promoted as a middle-class tax cut. President Trump and congressional Republicans have pitched the plan unveiled last week as a tax cut for most Americans. But millions of middle-class families — particularly those with children — would see an immediate tax increase, averaging about $2,000. Among the hardest-hit under the plan would be some of the most vulnerable taxpayers: those with huge out-of-pocket medical expenses. By 2026, 45 percent of middle-class families would pay more than what they would under the existing tax system.)
— Republican Tax Rewrite Helps Some Millionaires but Hurts Others – Jim Tankersley
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/06/us/politics/republican-tax-plan-rich-millionaires-trump.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Republican tax bill picks winners and losers across the income scale, including among millionaires. It is good news for people like President Trump but bad news for professional athletes. The bill delivers large breaks to high-earning owners of certain businesses, known as pass-through entities, which comprise most of Mr. Trump’s business empire, and to heirs of large estates, such as Mr. Trump’s children. So-called passive owners of businesses like real estate partnerships and hedge funds or even a local landscaping service, the example that Republicans pointed to when unveiling the plan last week, would enjoy the largest tax cut of all individual taxpayers under the bill. In part, that’s because the legislative text includes a carve-out allowing these earners to maintain their state and local income tax deduction — a valuable benefit that all other individual taxpayers could lose under the bill. By contrast, millionaires who earn money solely from their high-salaried employment — such as professional athletes — would see their taxes go up if the bill becomes law, because of a steep increase in their personal tax rates.)

According to local Kentucky news station WNKY-TV, the FBI launched an investigation into the attack shortly after it happened. They believe the attack, which occurred Friday afternoon, was politically motivated. The Daily Caller revealed Saturday evening that the assailant, 59-year-old Rene Boucher, is a registered Democrat whose Facebook page was riddled with posts voicing his opposition to President Donald Trump and the GOP. What happened? Boucher allegedly assaulted Paul while he was mowing his lawn around 3:20 p.m. Friday afternoon. According to reports, the two are neighbors and have had an ongoing feud, though it’s not clear what the disagreement is.)

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— What do you say about Rich Miller’s poll? – Dave Diersen
(ACCORDING TO RICH MILLER: A Capitol Fax/We Ask America poll found that 61 percent of 1,064 likely Republican voters had a favorable impression of Gov. Rauner. Just 24 percent had an unfavorable opinion, despite the fact that he has been taking enormous heat from his right flank ever since he signed a publicly funded abortion on demand bill into law in late September. . .We didn’t test President Donald Trump in this poll, but nationally he’s been getting somewhere between 80 and 85 percent support from members of his own party. So while Rauner has some very real problems when compared with Trump, is the opposition stiff enough to actually take him out in the primary? The poll, conducted for my newsletter subscribers Oct. 25-29, found Gov. Rauner is leading Rep. Ives 64-19, with 16 percent undecided. The poll had a margin of error of +/-3 percent. . .According to the poll, 83 percent of Republican voters have never heard of Ives. . .According to the poll, 85 percent of Downstaters and suburban Cook voters have never heard of Ives, and neither has 78 percent of collar county suburbanites. Gov. Rauner’s Downstate lead over Rep. Ives is 65-17. It’s 67-16 in suburban Cook County and 65-22 in the collars. Among men, Rauner leads 69-21 with 10 percent undecided. Among women, it’s 60-17, with 23 percent undecided. Forty-seven percent of the respondents were mobile phone users. Her only “bright spot” is Chicago, where Rauner’s lead is 41-34. Even so, 76 percent of Chicagoans say they’ve never heard of her, meaning they chose her without knowing who she is. Chicago is the only region where Rauner’s favorability is upside down. Just 40 percent have a favorable opinion versus 49 percent who have an unfavorable view.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Lawyers for a Russian tech executive are asking a federal judge to force BuzzFeed to reveal its source for an unverified dossier about Donald Trump that it published in full earlier this year. Their argument: BuzzFeed isn’t a real news organization. In court papers filed Wednesday in Florida federal court, attorneys representing Aleksej Gubarev and his companies tried to prove that BuzzFeed does not qualify for the reporters’ privilege that would allow it to avoid naming its source because it is not “a newspaper, news journal, news agency, press association, wire service, radio or TV station, network, or news magazine.” As such, the plaintiffs argue, BuzzFeed does not qualify for the privilege under a 1998 Florida law. While the filings cite an arcane statute, the argument also has echoes of an era when BuzzFeed was thought of more as a supplier of listicles and cat videos and less about its reporting. It also goes back to a time when news websites and bloggers were often looked down upon by more traditional journalists.)

HEADLINE CLUB
— On the loss of DNAinfo and Chicagoist, and the gap they leave in our city (DIERSEN: QUESTION: Which individuals, organizations, companies, and governments would be heartbroken if GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails disappeared? ANSWER: Certainly NOT those that a) glorify and praise Capitol Fax, b) pander to Capitol Fax, c) serve as operatives or as dupes for Capitol Fax, d) give money to Capitol Fax, and/or e) give scoops to Capitol Fax.)
http://prod.headlineclub.org/2017/11/02/on-the-loss-of-dnainfo-and-chicagoist-and-the-gap-they-leave-in-our-city/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Chicago Headline Club is heartbroken to learn that DNAinfo Chicago and Chicagoist have shut down today. Their departure is terrible news for journalism, Chicago and democracy at large. The two publications — along with their sibling outlets in New York, Washington, San Francisco and Los Angeles — have been an incredibly valuable source of news and information, providing a vital look at the cities we live in. During DNAinfo’s five-year history in Chicago, its staff and reporters have won more than a dozen of the Headline Club’s Peter Lisagor Awards. Chicagoist’s pithy and incisive coverage of news and culture has captured the city’s collective id better than many other outlets in the city. Their disappearance leaves a huge hole in the local and national media fabric that will be hard to refill. The Headline Club stands ready to help the reporters affected. Our website, headlineclub.org, offers a Chicago-centric list of media jobs through JobFile. Our Watchdog Fund can also compensate journalists for costs related to the reporting of an investigative story. We’ll also waive registration fees for any employee of DNAinfo or Chicagoist who wants to attend any of our educational programs, like FOIAFest, through the end of 2018. Emailprogramming@headlineclub.org to sign up. Our hearts go out to the hard-working journalists and the readers who depended on them. Stay strong.)

GOVERNMENT EXECUTIVE
— House Panel Backs Two-Year ‘Cooling-Off Period’ for Appointees Looking to Burrow In – Eric Katz (DIERSEN: GAO audits IRS. When I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980, my Democrat GAO superiors acted like I needed a “cooling-off period” before I could be assigned to audits of IRS. They stressed that my Democrat IRS superiors had not promoted me beyond GS-12, had disallowed my education deductions in 1978, and had disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat GAO superiors used that pretext to keep me off audits of IRS 1980-1985 and 1989 until they succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old. While the GAO manager who hired me in 1980 finally succeeded in getting me assigned to audits of IRS in 1986, and finally succeeded in promoting me to GS-13 in 1986, my Democrat GAO superiors succeeded in getting rid of him in 1987. I worked for IRS’s Collection Division for almost 9 years 1971-1980, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $79,563-$90,173. But my Democrat GAO superiors succeeded in keeping me off audits of IRS’ Collection Division during the entire almost 18 years that I worked for IRS. My Democrat GAO superiors wasted my knowledge of IRS.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: I said above that I have no sympathy for those who think that they’re entitled to act like boorish clods. The reason I have no use for it is that I was brought up that way, I had parents who taught me that human nature is imperfectible and it was my job to resist the baser instincts to which we’re all subject. In that regard, Senator Steans is right, training won’t be enough. Nothing will be enough until human nature bends toward androgyny. But if my colleagues want me to sign on to this, they’re certainly not doing it the right way. I’m not saying I’m blameless, but I’m damned sure not going to allow myself to be painted with their broad brush, nor will I subject myself to whatever “training” is imposed. By implying that I’m part of the problem simply by occupying a seat on the House floor or through the accident of birth of having been born male, they’re giving me every reason to say “no”. I assume the culture extends beyond Ira Silvertein. If they want my support, then name names.)

— What 65.5 Million Non-English Speakers Means For America
http://www.gopusa.com/what-65-5-million-non-english-speakers-means-for-america/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The memories of those many hours I spent teaching rushed back to me as I read the Census Bureau report that in 2016 a record 65.5 million people age five or older speak a language other than English at home, a total that has increased six million since 2010, and more than 34 million since 1990. The largest increases from 2010 to 2016 were among Spanish speakers, up 3.5 million; Chinese, up 564,000; Arabic, up 366,000; Hindi, up 201,000; Telugu, up 143,000; Vietnamese, up 129,000; Tagalog, up 128,000; Haitian, up 109,000; Bengali, up 101,000; Tamil, up 89,000, and Urdu, up 86,000. Telugu and Tamil are spoken in India, and Tagalog is the national language of the Philippines; Bengali is spoken in India and is also the national language of Bangladesh. Huge increases in the non-English speaking population – now more than one in every five households converses in a language other than English – don’t surprise me. As I entered the second half of my teaching career, the special green card and refugee programs ended, and the school district replaced them with open enrollment sessions. Enrollment became more diverse – more immigrant students from different corners of the world. In the end and sadly, however, few students demonstrated a commitment to learning English. That is, when they left the classroom, they returned to their homes in ethnic enclaves, and resumed speaking their native language. In California, not speaking English was particularly easy since most every government and retail service is offered in multiple languages. Learning a new language is hard, and more challenging when there’s no pressing need to adapt linguistically. But one statistic in the Census data jumped out at me. Many of those who speak a foreign language at home aren’t immigrants, but rather are born in the United States – 44 percent, or 29 million, of the 65.5 million. The U.S. born citizens, then, grow up in a household where the heads of family don’t speak English. My final takeaway from two decades of English language instruction was that the experience was personally enriching, but with generous amounts of frustration included in the mix. I would tell my students that to fully take advantage of the American way, English is essential. Without English, newcomers are limited to an unsatisfying life of low-paying jobs or welfare dependency. To Congress, pause in the unsustainable policy of admitting one million legal immigrants annually. Maintaining the current immigration pace guarantees an increasingly fractured America.)

I worked for GAO for almost 18 years, the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $94,610-$122,991. http://www.govexec.com/oversight/2017/11/trump-officials-rebuff-gao-auditors/142185/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: GAO’s enabling legislation goes back to the 1921 Budget and Accounting Act and threads through updated audit-related laws in 1945, 1950, 1970, 1974, 1984, 1990 and 1994. It began with a broad role of investigating “all matters relating to the receipt, disbursement, and application of public funds” and to “make recommendations looking to greater economy or efficiency in public expenditures,” its website says. Such authority was later expanded to include audits of financial statements, program evaluation and contractor protests. “For the vast majority of agencies we deal with, we get very good cooperation and are able to access the data we need,” GAO spokesman Chuck Young told Government Executive, adding that “Like anything, there are some exceptions. In those instances where we hit a roadblock, we elevate the issue within that agency, and here at GAO, and typically can get issues resolved.” GAO’s tendency to try to negotiate agency resistance was confirmed by David Walker, who led GAO as comptroller general from 1998-2008. “We had a general process for accepting engagements and a review process,” he said in an interview. “After agreeing to accept [a project], we would have a meeting every week to talk about how the engagements progress was going and ask, ‘Are we having difficulty obtaining access to records or other challenges in executing GAO’s statutory responsibilities?’” Walker explained. “We rarely had access problems, and when we did, we’d try to work through them, and in most cases we were able to.” The notable exceptions, added Walker, who is now running for governor of Connecticut, required the agency to issue a “demand” letter to a non-cooperating agency.)

— Fast-growing millionaires club – Mike Causey
https://federalnewsradio.com/mike-causey-federal-report/2017/10/fast-growing-millionaires-club/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Between early 2016 and mid-2017 (January to August), the number of mostly self-made government worker millionaires jumped from 3,272 to 16,475. Given the rising stock market, more people are moving into the seven-figure retirement club every month. In August, there were 46,088 people with account balances between $750,000 and $999,000. That was up from only 18,846 in January 2016. So how did they do it? The early TSP millionaires were all political appointees. Either elected (members of the House or Senate) or appointed to top jobs. Many were successful lawyers who were named federal judges. They brought their outside accounts with them and into the TSP, which is probably the least expensive and most closely monitored investment option on earth. According to some sources, one-time government employee Albert Einstein once said that compounding is the eighth wonder of the world. Or words to that effect. Or not. But even if he didn’t, and if he were alive today, he probably would have kind things to say about what happens when people invest over a long period of time, keep calm in good times and bad, and stay the course. In the case of federal investors, it helps immensely to take advantage of the 5 percent match Uncle Sam offers employees. As TSP investor Emily in Washington points out, for a TSP investor making $100,000 per year, that government match translates into a tax-deferred pay raise. And as salary goes up, so does the value of the match. Every now and then, we hear from a self-made TSP millionaire. While they come from all agencies, jobs and income levels, they all have a couple of things in common: They’ve been investing for a long time, an average of 28 years. They have all or most of their money in the C and S funds. When the market tanks (as it did in 1997 and 2008), they continue to buy the stock funds, getting more shares because they consider them on sale. More bang for the buck.)

Officials have said Manafort and Gates’ alleged activities happened before the campaign, and has said Papadopoulos was not a part of the campaign’s inner workings. But during the campaign in March 2016, Trump had touted Papadopoulos, calling him an “excellent guy” who was an “energy and oil consultant” in an interview with The Washington Post. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders during her Monday briefing also tried to deride him as a mere volunteer because he was unpaid. The fact that Papadopoulos was unpaid puts him in line with many on Trump’s campaign and in no way gauges his stature in the operation. According to previous reporting, Manafort, Gates, Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner and senior strategist Steve Bannon were all unpaid “volunteers” while doing extensive, high-level work for the campaign.)

HUFFINGTON POST
— To Create a New Amazon Village, It Takes a Graduate Degree (or Two, or Three…) – Terry Connelly (DIERSEN: The federal government encourages its employees to earn job-related degrees, certifications, and licenses. I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A master’s-level education in IT Management would also be critical in terms of specifications for the fiber-optic network and related technology infrastructure required to meet Amazon’s standards and assure seamless and efficient communications between HQ2 and HQ1 — as well as a vast array of warehouses, logistical network, customers, suppliers. Finally, but crucially, linking all of these complex operations, a master’s degree level of expertise in Supply Chain Management would be essential to get the most value out of the new headquarters in terms of Amazon’s multifaceted connections to its suppliers, merchants and customers. By the time the new headquarters is fully operational, Amazon might well be operating its own cargo airline delivering food and pharmaceuticals as well as merchandise the company offers now. What an exciting opportunity for anyone who could in the next year begin pursuing any range of graduate degrees that are so integral to the success of Amazon’s headquarters project. You might even call it a “prime” opportunity!)
