Randy Hultgren has fired a top aide after the staffer was found in a car last fall with a 17-year-old boy and no shirt on, according to multiple sources and a police report. Nick Provenzano, 56, was dismissed by Hultgren over the weekend, the sources said. Hultgren’s office declined to comment on the details of Provenzano’s firing. “Nick Provenzano is no longer with the office,” said a Hultgren spokesperson. The Hultgren spokesperson said the office only find out about the incident “late Wednesday and immediately placed him on leave before his eventual termination.” But through a Freedom of Information Act request, POLITICO obtained an Oct. 21, 2017, incident report from the city of McHenry Police Department in Illinois. That report shows police investigated Provenzano for public indecency and other potential criminal acts following the episode, but no charges were ever filed. The name of the teenager is redacted in the report. The report states that a homeowner became suspicious when she saw two men sitting in an SUV on a dead-end street with the lights off and called the police. After a police officer arrived, he approached the car and saw that Provenzano had no shirt on, although the other passenger was fully clothed. When Provenzano was questioned by the police about why he had removed his shirt, he said it was “hot.” Provenzano told the officer the two were “hanging out” and “talking about life.” Provenzano later told the officer that he “did not want to admit to anything, but stated that contact between him and [the teenager] was consensual in nature, that nobody was forced or coerced each other to engage in any acts they did not want to, and that he believed [the teenager] was eighteen (18) years old.” The teenager later told police he had met Provenzano on the gay dating site Grindr. The teenager said he was only 17, but the website changed his age to 18. The teenager said police interrupted them during the middle of their sexual encounter, according to the partially redacted report. Provenzano had removed most of his clothes at one point, the report states. After questioning by police, Provenzano was released without charges. He later hired a lawyer to respond to police inquiries, but Provenzano refused to be interviewed again. State prosecutors decided no criminal case would be filed against him. Provenzano was hired as Hultgren’s deputy district director in August 2016. Provenzano had earlier served as Hultgren’s field director during the 2012 and 2014 campaigns. Provenzano is a graduate of DeVry University with “training in electronics, computer technology and business management,” according to his candidate bio. He was paid more than $80,000 as Hultgren’s deputy district director last year, according to House disbursement records. He also earned another $28,000-plus from Hultgren’s reelection committee during 2017, according to records on file with the Federal Election Commission. Provenzano served as a McHenry County board member for 13 years. He was also the campaign manager for former Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) in 2010, according to his LinkedIn biography. Hultgren was first elected to the House in 2010. He was once an aide to former Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), who went to federal prison over secret payments to a man he allegedly sexually abused as a teenager. Hultgren, a lawyer, served in the Illinois Legislature for a dozen years before he was elected to Congress.)

Diana Rauner’s Italy remark was a response to a question she received about Illinois’ stunning rate of outmigration. An attendee noted that several of her neighbors had left the state, asking Diana Rauner what her husband planned to do to encourage people to stay. “She made a vague comment about stopping Madigan and then said that, if Bruce lost and they couldn’t stop Madigan, they were moving to Italy,” the source told DuPage Policy Journal. “It was awkward.” In addition to employing his wife, Durkin and his campaign chief, David Walsh, are a longtime backers of Mayor Chirico, a moderate Republican who supports Rauner but actively opposed President Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election. Those voters — younger, people of color and women — are likely more progressive, strategists tell me. Far fewer Republicans vote in Illinois primaries, so a candidate with a committed, animated base — that would be Ives — has an advantage. Rauner is wobbly on Trump. He’s loath to associate with Trump for fear of alienating Democratic and crossover GOP voters he will need in November. That is, should he be renominated since pro-Trump Ives, a state representative from Wheaton, has mustered a strong challenge from the right. The Democratic Governor’s Association is trying to throw the primary to Ives because she will be easier to beat in November. The DGA is running an ad praising her for being in “lockstep” with Trump — a pitch, wicked as it is from Democrats, to appeal to Trump primary voters turned off by Rauner.)

But Facebook is hardly alone in this regard. Another big player in the war on independent media is Google. This one has had a more dramatically negative impact on WND. You might not know it, but back in the day when Google gave preference to the most viewed breaking news stories on the internet, WND fared very well. But Google changed its algorithms, too. Today, the Google News page, which regularly featured WND content years ago, is devoid of any. In fact, WND is not even viewed as a legitimate news content provider. Why? It might have something to do with the gatekeepers Google has partnered with to define news. One of them is the Southern Poverty Law Center, a far left-wing money machine that is not southern, doesn’t fight poverty but increases it, scarcely practices law and doesn’t respect it, and an outfit about which the word “center” should never be associated in any way. The SPLC considers me a racist and a hate-monger in its annual reports and regards WND, my creation, no more charitably. When I launched WND, then known as WorldNetDaily, more than 20 years ago, the idea was to use this new level playing field with a low barrier to entry to reinvigorate the American press by returning it to what it was intended to be – an important check on government power and overreach, waste, fraud, abuse and corruption in high places. It worked initially. WND was propelled by audiences to become one of the very top-ranked news sites in the world. That was before Google took over pre-eminence among search engines. Since then, Google has made it a mission to ensure any search traffic that goes our way is an accident. I’m not exaggerating. Google news alerts typically don’t even recognize WND stories until 24 hours after they break. The point here is simple. Is the world better off with more diversity of opinion, more reporting from different viewpoints? Facebook doesn’t think so. Google doesn’t think so. And this Digital Cartel has made part of its mission the stamping out of all meaningful ideological diversity in online media.)

Students across the country were holding a walkout on Wednesday to protest gun violence and to call for gun control measures on the one-month anniversary of the Parkland school shooting that left 17 people dead. The GOP chairman said the school district seemed to be coercing students to take part in the demonstrations. “It’s appalling that 10 to 14 year old kids would be coerced, by their teachers, to participate in a political demonstration,” Cleveland wrote in a statement. “A 10-year-old kid isn’t going to have an informed opinion on these political matters, and shouldn’t be expected to have the fortitude to hold a different opinion from everyone else in his or her classroom. This is political indoctrination, pure and simple.” CPS Inspector General Nicholas Schuler told Fox News the district received the complaint and is evaluating it. The Chicago Public Schools and the CEO’s office have not returned calls from Fox News seeking comment. Last year, more than 650 people were murdered in Chicago. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Pamella Gronemeyer, who is running for the low-profile position of Democratic state central committeewoman in the 13th Congressional District, hasn’t promised to try to unseat longtime Democratic Party Chairman Michael Madigan. But one of Madigan’s campaign committees, Friends of Michael J. Madigan, has paid for robocalls by Sen. Dick Durbin and AFL-CIO President Mike Carrigan that endorse Gronemeyer’s opponent, Jayne Mazzotti of Taylorville. And Madigan spent thousands of dollars on mail pieces against two other state central committee members endorsed by Our Revolution, a group of Bernie Sanders supporters like Gronemeyer who want to reform the Democratic Party of Illinois. That might include toppling Madigan, who has headed the party since 1998. “I think it’s been a very tough fight with him and Rauner. Certainly, I’m opposed to Rauner,” said Gronemeyer, a pathologist who lives in Glen Carbon and owns SEMC Pathology in Highland. “But I think that maybe it might be time to contemplate a change. I think (Madigan) should want to embrace some of the people who are running on the slate with me. “We are good Democrats. We went to the convention. We supported things. We got out the vote. I think he should embrace us rather than run ads against us. Or come and talk to us even.” Our Revolution includes 13 candidates from around the state running for either state central committeeman or committeewoman. Even if all were elected next Tuesday, they probably couldn’t transform the 36-member state central committee. But Gronemeyer said she “would like to make the party more progressive. The idea is that it’s sort of staid. We had a lot of progressive activity during the Bernie campaign, and we’d just like to expand the progressive part of it. “The party doesn’t reach everybody. There are a lot of young people and other people who sort of feel left out. I think the Illinois Democratic Party could use some new blood, not that I’m new, but I think I’m a young 65.” Gronemeyer said she doesn’t know why the head of the Democratic Party is using robocalls against her or mailers against some of her colleagues. “I don’t know why Madigan would be afraid of us. We don’t want to throw everything away. Gosh darn it, I supported a tax increase because we have to do something with our budget,” she said of the state income tax increase last year. “They shouldn’t be afraid of us. They should want people to be involved, and that’s what our goal is. “Do I want to declare war on him? No, I want to see if we can work together. I want to see how we can work. I don’t think that declaring war is necessarily a good tactic. But I’m not saying I wouldn’t like to see someone else in there either. We need to see who is available and what they offer.” Madigan spokesman Steve Brown said the robocalls for Mazzotti are simply “in support of incumbent members of the committee who have been longtime Democratic activists.” He said that recorded calls from U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth also have been used on behalf of incumbent state central committee members. “I don’t think anyone is afraid of them,” Brown said. “But you run campaigns to win, and in the case of Sen. Durbin’s calls and the Carrigan calls and the Duckworth calls we made, it is to support party activists who are running to win. We’re not afraid of anybody.” Mazzotti declined to return messages seeking a comment.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Accusations of harassment from a campaign worker against her supervisor and close aide to Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, Kevin Quinn, led to Quinn’s firing last month. Madigan is still struggling with the ripple effects from Alaina Hampton’s claims, with some observers predicting this could be the downfall for the powerful politician. Hampton’s story has also brought attention to how political campaigns deal with sexual harassment. Organizers with a national movement to unionize campaign workers say with the high-pressure and temporary nature of campaign work, there’s often a push to ignore problems like harassment. “We think that (campaigns) are important and working really hard to elect the candidates is something that can change the future of our state,” said Emma LaBounty, an Illinois-based organizer with the Campaign Workers Guild. “But, it’s also something where a lot of times employers will use that as a reason why people should just put their head, work really hard and just not allow themselves to worry about anything else. . . until after election day.” Four Chicago House Democrats recently held a meeting with the Campaign Workers Guild. Campaign workers were invited to talk about their experiences and what they wanted to see change in the workplace. Meanwhile, one of the legislative groups tasked with addressing sexual harassment in Illinois government is looking to change the state election code and Human Rights Act to add protections for campaign workers. A panel appointed by Madigan in the wake of the Hampton’s allegations – U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, Comptroller Susana Mendoza and state Rep. Carol Ammons – will examine the issue as well. The panel won’t handle any investigations, but plans to talk with those who have spoken out about sexual misconduct within the Democratic Party, according to a letter from the three officials released last month. All funding and work for the panel will be independent from the Democratic Party. “This is a long-standing problem,” said state Rep. Kelly Cassidy, a Chicago Democrat and one of the lawmakers who met with LaBounty. “This is something that is endemic to this industry. We are the most nontraditional of nontraditional workplaces.” In an environment that requires considerable work in an often tight time span, it’s common to encounter unclear expectations and confusion about where employees go to report a problem such as sexual harassment, LaBounty said. Often one person is assigned the human resources role in addition to their campaign duties, and that person rarely has training or experience, LaBounty said. In large campaigns, a more formal HR department is more common, but its existence does not remedy the concerns of campaign workers. “Those are the sorts of situations where, while having adequate processes and adequate HR is certainly something that might be a little bit helpful for stabilizing the situation. . . the HR people still work for and are accountable to the employer at the end of the day,” she said. The guild is working in Illinois and several other states to get contracts for campaign workers that include specific clauses protecting them from harassment and requiring each campaign to have a person to file complaints with and a process to move the claim forward to an impartial third-party investigation. So far, the union group has only been contacted by Democratic campaigns, but if a Republican campaign staffer were to approach the group with an interest in unionizing, they would help, LaBounty said. Leaders of the House Task Force on Sexual Harassment are looking to strengthen the complaint reporting process as well. Their proposal includes changes in the state election code that would mandate all political committees maintain discrimination and harassment policies. Additionally, training in sexual harassment and discrimination would be required. “They would have to have some of the things that we require of ourselves in government,” said state Rep. Sara Wojcicki Jimenez, a Republican from Leland Grove. She and Democratic Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie co-chair the task force. By expanding the definition of an employee to include some campaign workers and the definition of employer to include the political committees that run campaigns in the Human Rights Act, Jimenez is hoping the committee will be able to tackle the issue of the campaign misconduct reporting structure. “A lot of what we’re doing right now is diving into our current law to see where we need to make some adjustments to include places for folks not only to get training if they work on a campaign, and if something were to happen, how they could report that up through the process and get a due process situation to hear their complaint,” Jimenez said. The task force has set up an email account, sdhtaskforce@ilga.gov, for the general public to submit suggestions and tips for amending the law to better tackle the nationwide issue of sexual harassment and discrimination.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Through the House Republican Organization (HRO), the Republican machine in Springfield is dumping hundreds of thousands of dollars into primary campaigns of their handpicked candidates. One of HRO’s toughest, more expensive campaigns is in the 53rd District against Mt. Prospect’s Katie Miller. The HRO’s candidate there is 29-year-old Eddie Corrigan. HRO has given over $150,000 to his campaign just since late February, according to Illinois State Board of Elections records. Corrigan lives with his father in Arlington Heights and has a colorful party history on full display on Facebook. The 39-year-old Miller is a registered nurse and married mother of three who pays nearly $10,000 a year in property taxes. In TV commercials and mailers, Corrigan’s HRO-funded campaign — just as with other HRO smears targeting those running against their handpicked candidates — is saying that Miller is a Democrat at heart and has ties to Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan. Miller, a self-described “across-the-board conservative,” calls the ads “outright lies.” “I was carrying posters for Republican candidates ever since I was 4,” Miller said. “I have never even met Madigan.” The Corrigan campaign has also criticized Miller for appealing her property taxes, describing the process as “shady.” Millions of homeowners in Cook County appeal their taxes each year, standard practice in a state with the highest property taxes in the nation. Corrigan doesn’t pay property taxes. After the hit ads against Miler, the Liberty Principles PAC financed mailers containing Facebook photos that show Corrigan in full party mode: one shows his head back chugging from a beer bottle, and another shows his tongue out and beer can in hand during a St. Patrick’s Day celebration; in others, he’s making an obscene gesture. A caption with the photos reads: “These are worth at least 1,000 words. But here are ten: We Have Enough Children In Springfield. Don’t Send Any More.” Corrigan refers to himself as a conservative, but in a debate with Miller he waffled on the issues, especially social ones. In the U.S. that has included women, Africans, Indians, Irish, Italians, Catholics, Jews and Chinese. More recently, but harder to identify, are the LBGT adherents. (If your favorite was left out, my apologies) In a nutshell, these groups have no choice about their identity, so laws about discriminating against them are understandable. But what is a Democrat or Republican or a Libertarian that one can complain they have a right to equal representation at the ballot box? Were they born that way? Is it a religious belief, or a demographic affliction which requires protections under the law? No, they are no different than a sports team, which one chooses, for various reasons, as the team they support. Can you tell the difference between a Democrat or Republican or a Constitutionalist by looking at them? Only if they’re working for their team near an election. Like Panther’s fans, they proudly show their affiliation. But that affiliation can easily change. Democrats become Republicans or independents and vice versa. On what then, do Democrats base their challenges to a gerrymandered district? They say they want an equal chance to win and the districting the legislatures have done, which appears legal under the Constitution, doesn’t give them those chances.)
