(FROM THE ARTICLE: A California Republican lawmaker introduced two bills on Tuesday that aim to ban discrimination over a person’s political views, characterizing the package as an effort to fight ‘cancel culture.’ “Cancel culture and the efforts to silence differing opinions and voices should be a growing concern for all of us,” said Sen. Melissa Melendez, R-Lake Elsinore. “A climate of intolerance has been established and has stifled healthy and normal debate. Anyone who values their own freedom of speech should be concerned.” Senate Bill 238, also known as the Diversity of Thought Act, seeks to add political affiliation as a protected class under the Fair Employment and Housing Act. That law currently bars employment and housing discrimination based on someone’s race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, sexual orientation, familial status, marital status, disability, nationality and source of income. The other bill, Senate Bill 249, would amend California’s education code to prohibit discrimination, harassment intimidation and bullying in schools based on an individual’s political affiliation. Cancel culture, or ‘canceling,’ is the act of ostracizing a public figure or private citizen online or in public for behavior considered questionable or controversial. The terms have joined the cultural lexicon in recent years. The terms are commonly used in conservative media in the context of the entertainment industry, social media or mainstream news media, with right-leaning activists alleging bias against their views. For instance, former President Donald Trump’s supporters claimed he was a victim of “cancel culture” when Twitter and Facebook stripped him of his social media platforms when the companies concluded his campaign to retain power after losing the 2020 election risked inciting violence. Mike Madrid, a California-based Republican political strategist, said he’s not surprised that a Republican is seeking to make political affiliation a protected class. “It’s really symbolic of the Republican Party embracing the politics of victimization and grievance,” he said, adding that both Republicans and Democrats participate in cancel culture. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Now, new legislation from Senator Mark Warner will make changes to the bill. Democrat Warner introduced the Safe Tech Act to the Senate on February 5. This bill would essentially update the protections that social media corporations would have enjoyed under section 230 and hold them more accountable for the content that is posted on their platforms and expose them to many more lawsuits. What lies at the heart of this though, is the voices of the users of social media platforms. They would need to be a lot more rules put in place and a lot more moderators working around the clock to make sure that these rules are being adhered to. In a tweet, Warner said that “The SAFE TECH Act doesn’t interfere with free speech – it’s about allowing these platforms to finally be held accountable for harmful, often criminal, behaviour enabled by their platforms to which they have turned a blind eye for too long.” Should this bill be successful, it will certainly be a game-changer for the way social media companies are run if they don’t want to be caught on the wrong side of the law.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois congressman Adam Kinzinger may be gaining nationwide attention because of his impeachment vote and newly announced Country First movement, but some Republicans back home say this latest round of rhetoric may be causing local GOPs more harm than good. State Rep. Andrew Chesney, R-Freeport, took to Facebook Thursday to call Kinzinger “a political embarrassment,” adding that the Republican congressman’s newly formed political action committee Country First should be called “Adam First.” “I don’t think he’s in touch with what mainstream Republicans are really saying,” Chesney said. “The area that I take greatest exception to is that while he’s been on his media blitz trying to talk about conservatism, the congressman is always the last one to attend the Lincoln Day dinner and the first one to leave. “He’s listening to a D.C. crowd rather than listening to what Republicans are saying.” On a Tuesday media call, Kinzinger said he created his Country First video and website about a week ago as a way to express what he felt was happening — “kind of my mourning for the Republican Party” — and give people a place to take action if they agreed with him. “The outpouring of support has been incredible,” Kinzinger said. Kinzinger wouldn’t say how much money has been raised thus far. He said raising money wasn’t the goal. “It’s about building a movement, and my goodness it’s shown that there is a real desire out there for something different.” Rockford Republicans state Sen. Dave Syverson and state Rep. Joe Sosnowski also said that the congressman’s Country First message, which says that the “Republican party has lost its way,” doesn’t ring true with them or the Republicans they work with in Boone and Winnebago counties. “I don’t think splitting up the party is the answer,” Syverson said. “Who doesn’t want country first? That sounds almost like ‘Make America Great Again.’” Kinzinger’s actions and statements of late are actually the cause of some of the dissension in the today’s Republican party, Syverson said. Syverson said he heard from many Rock River Valley Republicans in recent weeks who are concerned over Kinzinger’s stance on the impeachment. He said he tells those voters to call Kinzinger’s office. “If you feel you disagree with him on something, let him know,” he said. Sosnowski said Kizinger’s message of focusing on what’s best for the country and de-escalating the rhetoric and political in-fighting are admirable and valuable goals. “I disagree with his approach,” Sosnowski said. “It’s a conflicting message. He’s talking about de-escalating the rhetoric yet he’s attacking fellow Republicans. … It seems contradictory.” Sosnowski also said the local Republican platform — pro-business, pro-family, less government — remains strong and stable. “I think our principles are still very much there,” he said. “They haven’t disappeared.” Back in his state house district, Chesney said he believes Kinzinger is in “a super minority” of Republicans, and that Kinzinger’s message of lack of leadership and forgotten values isn’t what Stephenson County Republicans are talking about in carpool lanes and coffee shops. “I don’t believe that’s anywhere close to reflective of where we’re at as a party,” said Chesney, who also serves as Stephenson County’s GOP chair. “I think there’s certainly an autopsy to discuss what worked and what didn’t work in Trump’s presidency, but that’s not what he’s doing. “He’s trying to implode the entire party.” Also during Tuesday’s press call, Kinzinger readily denied rumors that he might be using the impeachment as a catapult to statewide office. “People that speculate that don’t know me,” he said. “I don’t have any plans for anything higher in Illinois. … As always, I’ll put the caveat that I’m not going to rule anything out because Jan. 5 and Jan. 7 are two very different days in this world.”)

The other set of candidates was selected the same night in the parking lot outside the Naperville Township offices on Water Street in Naperville. They include Lynda Segneri for supervisor, Barbara Lukoff for clerk, Gary Vician for assessor, and Thomas Laz, Gabby Serna and Bill Breyne for the three open trustee seats. That slate was not certified by the township clerk nor forwarded to the county clerk so the candidates filed a lawsuit to have their names listed on the ballot. Attorney Keri-Lyn Krafthefer, who represents the plaintiffs, said 17 Republican voters showed up at the Naperville Township offices Dec. 1 for the caucus. When they were denied in-person access to the meeting, they caucused outside in the parking lot, Krafthefer said. Their lawsuit contends there is no provision in state law that permits a caucus election to be conducted electronically. Vician said a caucus is essentially a primary election, and elections are held in person, not virtually. Caucusing in person allows everyone to have a voice and speak freely, he said. “You really can’t do that on a Zoom call,” Vician said. “In a Zoom meeting, you can be silenced (through muting or ignoring someone who raises their hand).” Rather than decide which slate of candidates should be on the April 6 ballot, DuPage Judge James McCluskey ruled everyone would be listed for the consolidated election. In a written ruling explanation issued Friday, McCluskey said the Zoom caucus was “not properly conducted in a fair and honest manner.” The judge said he agreed with the plaintiffs’ argument that the Zoom caucus was held “in blatant contravention to the Township Code and the Governor’s Executive Order 2020-73 which exempts Township Caucuses from electronic means.” Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s Nov. 18 coronavirus mitigation order to which the judge referred was interpreted differently by the two sides. Krafthefer said the governor’s executive order “does not apply to the December 2020 township caucuses,” which means caucuses can be held in person as required by state law. But Ruhl said the Republican organization was following the governor’s directive. The same order a few sentences later says, “Nothing in this Executive Order prohibits caucuses from being held virtually, and caucus organizers are encouraged to facilitate virtual attendance, to convene outdoors, and must adhere to all Social Distancing Requirements.” Ruhl said he’s not sure when the appellate court will rule, though he expects a decision will be made before April 6 when votes are counted.)
