GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Wheaton’s City Council has narrowed the field of its 10 applicants for its West District vacancy to 3, and I am not one of them. The Council will interview those 3 finalists in the coming weeks. Critics of the Roosevelt Road corridor study by Camiros, Ltd. and Valerie Kretchmer & Associates (https://www.wheaton.il.us/930/Roosevelt-Road) have called for the Council to halt all action on the study until it fills its West District vacancy. It appears, sadly, like before, when the Council filled its North District vacancy, that it will not disclose who the 3 finalists are. I hope that the 3 finalists will get together, issue a joint press release, and call for a candidate forum to be held. Residents of Wheaton’s West District, including me, should have the opportunity to urge the Council to select one of those 3 finalists. Obviously, one could determine who the 3 finalist are if all 7 of the unsuccessful candidates got together and issued a press release. – Dave Diersen

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A conservative think tank in Wisconsin is suing the state’s governor, Tony Evers, amid allegations that his administration has denied journalists working for the group’s new service access to a budget press briefing and refused to add its reporters to the governor’s press list. The Maclver Institute, a right-leaning public policy shop that runs the Maclver News Service, filed suit earlier this week against Evers for purportedly excluding its reporters from press briefings and failing to provide them with media materials given to other journalists. The lawsuit claims that the Evers’ administration is violating the journalists’ constitutional rights to free speech, freedom of the press and equal access. “Our reporters have the same constitutional rights as every other journalist in Wisconsin, and we have a duty to keep the public informed about what’s happening in state government,” Brett Healy, the president of the MacIver Institute, said in a statement. “While we hoped Gov. Evers would do the right thing and treat our journalists they (sic) way they treat others, the administration has refused. We now have no option but to sue.” The Maclver News Service covers Wisconsin’s legislature, governor’s office and other political affairs from a conservative viewpoint. (FROM THE ARTICLE: The village of Bolingbrook Board of Trustees voted Tuesday night to prohibit cannabis business establishments within its boundaries. The trustees voted 5-1 in favor of the prohibition. Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar said he was in favor of prohibiting cannabis businesses in the village and decried how the state government passed the legislation to legalize it. “I philosophically have a real problem with governments which have turned to drugs and gambling to balance their budgets,” he said. “That’s what the state’s come to.” The village’s ordinance cited the state’s Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, which allows municipalities to prohibit adult-use cannabis business establishments. Ken Teppel, the village’s public safety director, spoke about the Bolingbrook Police Department’s opposition to allowing cannabis businesses in town. He also talked about the challenges posed to police departments in other states that have already legalized recreational cannabis use, like Colorado. For example, Teppel said cannabis businesses have been targets for theft because they deal solely in cash to be in compliance with federal banking laws. He added that, for police, it’s more difficult to investigate such crimes without a paper trail. He also talked about other problems like black markets developing around legal dispensaries, the high potency of the drug nowadays, potential dangers with flammable materials used to grow the plant, and trying to develop a test for impaired drivers who have used the drug. During public comments, the opinions among the handful of residents who spoke were mixed. Trustee Bob Jaskiewicz was the only “no” vote. He said it was a mistake to not have a public hearing before holding a vote on the prohibition. “I want us to consider other points as to why a dispensary would be a good thing,” Jaskiewicz said. Claar told Jaskiewicz to take up the issue with state legislators because, unlike other states, which held a referendum, Illinois “chose to ignore the public” and didn’t ask voters. Claar said lawmakers were already discussing a possible trailer bill to clarify and fix issues with the initial law that passed.
