— As boomers retire, knowledge transfer is key – Rex Huppke  (DIERSEN: Who wastes/wasted your knowledge?  My Democrat GAO superiors wasted the knowledge that I gained a) earning a job-related bachelor’s degree from NIU in 1970, b) earning a job-related masters degree from Loyola in 1976, passing the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, working for IRS 1971-1980, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 level (currently $77,899-$88,286), earning a job related master’s degree from DePaul in 1980, passing the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, earning a job-related master’s degree from IIT in 1997, working for GAO at the GS-9 Step 10 – GS-12 Step 5 level (currently $69,827-$88,286) 1980-1986, working for GAO at the GS-13 level (currently $92,632-$120,427) 1986-1997, and serving on the Association of Government Accountants 1983-1996.  My Democrat GAO superiors would not have wasted the aforesaid knowledge, wasted my GAO career, or forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, or a veteran.  Further, since 1997, Democrat plant, Libertarian plant, Green plant, and RINO activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois have wasted the aforesaid knowledge and all the knowledge that I have gained serving as your GOPUSA Illinois Editor since 2000, serving as the TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman 2005-2012, etc.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/careers/ijustworkhere/ct-huppke-work-advice-knowledge-transfer-0731-biz-20160728-column.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As members of the baby-boom generation continue to selfishly retire, waltzing off to engage in ridiculous activities like “enjoying life” and “relaxing,” the rest of us are left with the drudgery of work and, in many cases, a notable lack of institutional knowledge. According to the Pew Research Center, 10,000 baby boomers are reaching age 65 each day. While it’s been on the horizon for years, the reality of the boomer brain drain is still catching companies off guard, making “knowledge transfer” the buzzword du jour. Before veteran workers depart, it’s crucial they pass along not just a rough outline of how they do their jobs or a filing cabinet stuffed with old manuals and reports but some of the deeper knowledge gained from years of experience. It’s something Dorothy Leonard, a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School and co-founder of the consulting firm Leonard-Barton Group, calls “tacit knowledge.”)

— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Anti-Trumps promote Clinton.
http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2016-07-31/tom-kacich-hillary-made-news-even-when-she-was-22.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: By the time she was 22 years old Hillary Rodham had been elected student body president at Wellesley College, had given the first-ever student commencement speech at the Massachusetts college that is still exclusively for women, had been featured in an issue of Life magazine, had been accused on the front page of the Boston Globe of upstaging a U.S. senator and had been denounced in an editorial by her hometown newspaper, the Chicago Tribune. Even 900 miles away at the University of Illinois, Rodham was mentioned by Illinois Gov. Richard Ogilvie in a commencement address as representative of the student idealism of that time. All of that attention 47 or more years ago undoubtedly prepared Rodham — the future Hillary Clinton — for a lifetime in the public eye, including a historic run for president. The one-time “Goldwater Girl” from Park Ridge shed her conservative values while at Wellesley and within four years had moved 180 degrees politically, backing anti-war Democrat Sen. Eugene McCarthy for president in 1968. She became a student leader, ran for president of the student government and on May 31, 1969, gave the commencement speech that attracted so much attention. Ruth Adams, the president of Wellesley, introduced Rodham as “cheerful, good humored, good company and a good friend to all of us.” In her prepared remarks Rodham talked mostly of her classes’ time at Wellesley, of protests and demonstrations, and shared power and responsibility, and of the value of education.)

HERALD & REVIEW
— Legislators: Big pay for a part-time job – Editorial  (DIERSEN: Who hints/implies/argues/shouts that you are/were overpaid?  The following hint/imply/argue/shout that the federal government overpaid me: those who are anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors. Many millions have not and will not seek a job with the federal government a) because the pay and benefits are terrible, b) because the advancement opportunities are terrible, c) because they lack required education, work experience, professional certifications, and/or professional licenses, d) because they cannot pass a background investigation, e) because they cannot pass a physical examination, f) because they cannot take the demonization, denigration, and condemnation that comes with being a federal employee or federal retiree, and/or g) because they are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and they know that the federal government discriminates against its employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)
http://herald-review.com/news/opinion/editorial/our-views-legislators-big-pay-for-a-part-time-job/article_71420318-3ec2-5619-bfdd-7df98703e9c2.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Most folks would say that a salary of $100,000 for a full-time job is a pretty good gig. A six-figure salary for a part-time job is the stuff of fantasy. Except for the Illinois General Assembly, where the majority of members pull down more than $100,000 a year for what is a part-time job. For taxpayers, the news gets worse. When other costs such as pension, mileage, per diem payments and insurance are figured in, taxpayers pay about $32 million a year to the 177 legislators, according to a new report by the Illinois Policy Institute. Illinois legislators are the highest paid in the Midwest and fifth-highest in the nation. It should be noted that this group of 177 legislators have combined to turn Illinois into the worst-run state in the nation. Pay for performance isn’t part of the formula.)

My outstanding parents provided me with room and board during my first 2 years at UIC 1966-1968, weekends during my first semester at NIU in 1969, and the summer of 1969.  That enabled me to work, to earn, and to save enough money to a) buy a new 1968 Oldsmobile in 1967, b) buy a new 1969 Dodge Charger SE in 1968, and c) graduate debt-free from NIU in August of 1970 owning the aforesaid 1969 Dodge Charger SE.)

http://wgntv.com/2016/07/28/chicago-area-college-student-pushing-for-better-life-after-dnc/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: We report all too often on the gun violence that cuts short the lives of young people in our city.  But one Chicago-area college student is trying to re-write that script, and the Democratic National Convention could end up being her ticket to a better life. At first glance, Christine Williams, 19, looks like every other volunteer working at the Wells Fargo Center. She checks DNC credentials and shows people to their seats. But, this Aurora University sophomore is so much more. Williams is from Chicago’s Austin neighborhood, a high crime area, prone to gun violence.  She even knows people who have been shot. But she wants something different for herself and her 2-year-old daughter. “I have goals, I have dreams, I have big dreams,” Christine says. She’s among a handful of college students from across the country picked by the Washington Center, a DC based nonprofit organization, to work at the Democratic National Convention.  With a nearly 3.8 GPA, the political science and business administration major, who’s also minoring in accounting and international studies, hopes this experience will lead to bigger and better things. The trip to Philly was Williams’ first plane ride ever. She admits she wasn’t really into the political process – at first – but now she one day hopes to run for political office, maybe congress or even president, thanks to Hillary Clinton. She knows most people don’t expect someone like her, a teenage mother from the West Side of Chicago, to end up successful. But that’s only pushing her to do more. “It allows me to give my community a voice, and how that just because you’re from a certain part, certain area, doesn’t mean that you can’t become something in life,” she said. Well said, Christine.)

— Trump says Democrats ignore terrorism, crime and illegal immigration – Michael Finnegan
http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-trump-response-democrats-20160728-snap-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump responded Thursday to scorching attacks by President Obama and others at the Democratic convention by saying they were “not talking about the real world” of Islamic terrorism, unchecked illegal immigration, rampant crime, a depleted military and U.S. jobs “pouring into Mexico.” “Boy, am I getting hit,” the Republican presidential nominee complained to supporters at a rally in Davenport, Iowa. Trump denied accusations that he’d outlined a dark vision of America last week at the GOP convention in Cleveland, saying he had offered a “very optimistic” prescription for overcoming the nation’s troubles. The normally unbridled New York businessman was relatively subdued at the first of two Iowa campaign stops. He said he’d resisted the temptation to respond “viciously” to those attacking him at the Democratic gathering this week in Philadelphia. “I was going to hit one guy in particular — a very little guy,” he said in an apparent reference to Michael R. Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor and political independent who branded Trump a “con” in a speech to Democratic delegates on Wednesday. “I was going to hit this guy so hard, his head would spin. He wouldn’t know what the hell happened.” Trump said he was heeding an unnamed governor’s advice to stay focused on attacking Hillary Clinton. “I was going to hit a number of those speakers so hard, their heads would spin,” he said. “They’d never recover. That’s why I still don’t have certain people endorsing me. They still haven’t recovered.” Trump’s restraint came a day after he sparked controversy by inviting Russian cyberhackers to unearth more than 30,000 deleted emails from when Clinton was secretary of State. Critics accused him of borderline treason for encouraging a foreign adversary to intrude illegally into a former Cabinet member’s email. Trump told Fox News on Thursday that his challenge to Russia was meant to be sarcastic. Undaunted by charges that he was too friendly toward President Vladimir Putin, Trump told the crowd in Davenport that the U.S. needed to improve relations with Russia. “Wouldn’t it be nice if we actually got along with Russia?” he said. Trump bemoaned the U.S. fighting “politically correct wars,” but the only one he specified was the Iraq war. “We shouldn’t have been in Iraq in the first place,” Trump said. “I was totally against being in Iraq, right from the beginning.” That statement is incorrect. In a radio interview on Sept. 11, 2002, six months before the war started, Howard Stern asked Trump whether he supported an invasion of Iraq. “Yeah, I guess so,” Trump answered. “I wish the first time it was done correctly.” Trump also told the crowd that the United States was “one of the highest-taxed nation in the world.” But the CIA’s World Factbook ranks the United States 171st out of 219 countries in the percentage of gross domestic product spent on taxes.)

— Donald Trump’s Florida clubs are hiring — but the jobs will go to foreign workers – Meg Wagner
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/donald-trump-florida-clubs-hiring-foreign-workers-article-1.2729433
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump wants to bring jobs back to America — and some foreign workers to fill them. Trump is looking to hire 78 servers, housekeepers, and cooks for his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach and the nearby Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, according to Federal labor records. As he has for years, the Republican presidential nominee filed this month to import foreign workers for the jobs instead of hiring Americans, Buzzfeed News first reported Wednesday. Department of Labor records show Trump has sought H-2 visas for hundreds of foreigners to fill temporary positions at the two properties in recent years. The visas are issued through a legal program that allows employers to temporarily hire foreign workers when there are no Americans available to do the work. But hundreds of U.S. applicants either applied or were referred for the jobs, but only a handful were hired, the New York Times reported in February.  Since 2010, nearly 300 U.S. residents applied or were referred for jobs as waiters, waitresses, cooks and housekeepers there, but only 17 were hired, according to The Times. Over the same time period, 500 visas for foreign workers were filed at Mar-a-Lago. Laurel Baker, the executive director of the Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce, said the practice was common at seasonal seaside properties. “That’s something that appears to happen at all of the hotels or resorts,” Baker said. “The argument is that there are few locals available to do the work. This is more of a resort community.” Trump’s two properties are looking to hire 37 waiters and waitresses, who will be paid $11.13 an hour, and 26 cooks, who will earn $12.74 an hour. Additionally, Mar-a-Lago needs 15 $10.17-an-hour housekeepers.)

http://www.autoomobile.com/news/new-version-ford-mustang-costs-less-than-honda-civic-for-first-buyers/40032725/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: So why is it cheaper for first time buyers to insure a Ford Mustang than it is the Honda Civic? The Civic offers up plenty of safety features and it isn’t as fast as the Mustang, so you would have thought it would have been the other way around. In fact there is a data pool which shows which age groups and cars are more prone to having accidents and making a claim. This means that the model of the vehicle actually goes towards how much insurance you are going to have to pay. So, first time buyers are able to buy a Ford Mustang and get it for cheaper insurance than they would the Honda Civic.)

— Duckworth: Kirk running from record as Republican – Tina Sfondeles  (DIERSEN: How many will vote for Kirk because of the votes that he has cast against the Republican Party platform?  If I attended the Democrat convention as a member of the news media today like when I attended her rally with Michael J. Fox in Wheaton’s Arrowhead Golf Club in 2006, would she have her thugs throw me out again like she did then?  In retrospect, with benefit of hindsight, I should not have let her thugs throw me out.)
http://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/duckworth-kirk-running-from-record-republican/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “I don’t think there’s a closer friend to Gov. Rauner than Mark Kirk,” Duckworth said. “In fact, much of Mark Kirk’s machine is running Rauner’s machine,” Duckworth said before criticizing Kirk for his voting record on trade deals and calling him someone willing to shift jobs overseas. Jabs at Rauner have become commonplace at the morning breakfasts, where union leaders and elected officials have collectively criticized the freshman governor. “I’m running to help Mark Kirk retire so he can go and do other things,” Duckworth said. “But really I’m running to make sure that families like me, families like yours, families like all of the ones across Illinois get a fair chance.” . . . Responding to Duckworth’s attacks, Kirk campaign spokesman Kevin Artl said: “Whether it was defending Rod Blagojevich or supporting Mike Madigan, Tammy Duckworth always puts her political ambitions ahead of what’s best for Illinois. While Rep. Duckworth votes with Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid nearly 94% of the time, Senator Mark Kirk remains a thoughtful, independent leader who always puts Illinois first.”)

DAILY HERALD
— Women reject settlement in Duckworth workplace retaliation lawsuit – Kerry Lester  (DIERSEN: In 1998, in Diersen v. Ford Motor Company and Packey Webb Ford, just before the trial was to start, I accepted the defendants’ settlement offer to a) fix the defects in my 1996 Thunderbird LX, b) give me $6,000, and c) give my attorney $6,000.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160727/news/160729088/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The day before congresswoman Tammy Duckworth is scheduled to deliver a major speech on the main stage at the Democratic National Convention, two women who filed a workplace retaliation suit against her have announced they’re refusing to accept a settlement offer that seemed a done deal just weeks ago. Now, a trial set to begin Aug. 15 in downstate Jonesboro could serve as an obstacle at an inopportune time for Duckworth as she enters the home stretch of her campaign to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk in a nationally-watched race. Plaintiffs Denise Goins and Christine Butler told the Daily Herald Wednesday that they were insulted by the Duckworth campaign’s June 24 response to the settlement, with deputy campaign manager Matt McGrath releasing a statement describing the suit as “a frivolous workplace case” that dragged on for more than eight years. “Within an hour of leaving the courthouse, her campaign decided to swing us through the mud again,” Butler said. “So we emailed our attorney to let him know we want to proceed to trial.” The women say they received no pressure from the Kirk campaign to reject the settlement offer.)
— Here’s what Bill Clinton said about Park Ridge Tuesday – Mike Riopell
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160727/news/160729087/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “I actually drove her home to Park Ridge, Illinois, to meet her family and see the town where she grew up, a perfect example of post-World War II middle-class America. Street after street of nice houses, great schools, good parks, a big public swimming pool,” he said. “And almost all white.”  He called her father a “crusty conservative” and her mother “more liberal” and said that “knowing her was one of the greatest gifts Hillary ever gave me.” “All extolling the virtues of rooting for the Bears and the Cubs,” Bill Clinton said. “And for the people from Illinois here, they even told me what waiting for next year meant. Could be next year, guys.” Clinton talked about Hillary’s Methodist minister Don Jones taking her to Chicago to see Martin Luther King Jr. speak, and much later in the speech noted that longtime Hillary Clinton friend Betsy Ebeling of Arlington Heights cast the Illinois delegation’s votes for the nominee.)

http://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/madigan-democrats-not-involved-ron-sandack-cyberattacks/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: He’s known for his political brinksmanship, but House Speaker Mike Madigan said Wednesday he has no idea why Republican state Rep. Ronald L. Sandack — a top ally of Madigan’s nemesis, Gov. Bruce Rauner — abruptly resigned over the weekend. Asked Wednesday morning at a Democratic National Convention breakfast whether Democrats had any role in the cyber attacks that Sandack had cited in resigning, the Southwest Side Democrat replied “No. . . . I’ll let Sandack speak to what his problem is. I don’t know anything about it.” Sandack had been facing a challenge from Democrat Greg Hose in the November election — a race that might now be more winnable for Democrats with the much better-known Sandack off the ballot. “Again, I’d leave it up to Sandack to explain his problems,” Madigan said. Sandack issued a statement to the Capitol Fax political blog on Sunday saying that “cyber security issues” forced him to re-evaluate his “continued public service” and that he was resigning immediately. . .After declining to comment about Sandack on Monday, Rauner said Tuesday that he had no advance warning that Sandack had planned to resign. The governor’s statement only raised more intrigue about Sandack’s decision, as Sandack was one of Rauner’s most vocal advocates in the Legislature. “I really can’t comment much on Mr. Sandack’s situation,” Rauner told reporters after an event in downstate Auburn. “I heard about it yesterday morning, the same time I think most of you did. I’m not sure what all is going on there.”)

Koppie is running under the Constitution Party banner while Conklin filed as an independent. (FROM THE ARTICLE: “We just put the biggest crack in that glass ceiling yet,” a smiling Clinton declared as she made a surprise appearance on video at night’s end, to the roar of delegates. “This is really your victory,” she said, predicting that many more women will be nominated for president — and elected. Clinton’s long political resume – secretary of state, senator, first lady – has sometimes obscured the historic nature of her candidacy. Her supporters noted that Clinton’s achievement came nearly a century after women gained the right to vote in 1920. Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski nominated Clinton, saying she was acting on behalf of “all women who have broken down barriers for others.” Mikulski was the first Democratic woman to be elected to the Senate in her own right.)

http://www.post-gazette.com/opinion/letters/2016/07/27/Liberals-should-practice-the-tolerance-they-preach/stories/201607270118
(FROM THE LETTER: I never realized that as a conservative Republican, Christian, white male and veteran what a horrible hate-filled racist, xenophobic, misogynist and all-around horrible person I am. Thanks to Rob Rogers’ July 21 cartoon and Oren Spiegler’s July 21 letter (“Republicans Should Regret Their Nominee Choice”), I now know that Republicans are racists, bigots and intolerant. I now realize how tolerant liberals are. I could definitely feel the love. To a liberal, compassion is when the government forcibly takes someone’s hard-earned money to give to someone else who didn’t earn it so that the government can create a culture of dependency and rob people of the joy of being self-reliant and free to determine their own future — thus stealing that person’s dignity. And that is what a liberal calls compassion? To a conservative, compassion is giving of one’s self, time, heart and money to help our fellow man. Gentlemen, please don’t pretend to know what is in my heart. I wonder if they have ever really been exposed to the disaster created by liberal government social programs. Please don’t try to clear your conscience by diminishing others who hold a different opinion and experience than yours. Practice tolerance!)

TORANTO SUN
— Democrats playing race card – again – CRYSTAL WRIGHT
http://www.torontosun.com/2016/07/26/democrats-playing-race-card—again
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democrats promised that their coronation, I mean convention nomination, of Hillary Clinton was going to be an uplifting affair. Yet watching the first night of the Democrat National Convention felt like it was 1964 all over again. While Michelle Obama declared in her speech “when they aim low, we aim high,” Democrats pulled the entire deck of ugly race cards all night long. Then like now, Democrats stoked racial division to win votes and political power in America over the last half century. The only difference was then there was a white Democrat president. In 2016, we have a black Democrat president. Listening to Sen. Cory Booker yell that it was time for Americans “to rise up,” one wouldn’t think we had elected a black leader almost eight years ago. The night’s theme was how racially divided America has become — curiously, under the first black president. Between the boos yelled by Bernie Sanders supporters, it felt like riots might erupt at any minute on the convention floor as Sen. Elizabeth Warren ranted that Donald Trump was campaigning to divide America based on race, religion and gender. “But ask yourself this. When white workers in Ohio are pitted against black workers in North Carolina, or Latino workers in Florida, who really benefits?” Warren said. Democrats benefit from identity politics, not Republicans. It’s the classic playbook that Barack Obama used. In 2008 and 2012, Obama played the race card and won with historic levels of black voter turnout. And he’s used race throughout his entire presidency as a political weapon. So there’s no surprise that according to the Washington Post, more than 6 in 10 adults say race relations in the U.S. are bad. That’s 63% compared with 48% earlier this year. It’s probably not helpful when you have the first Black president of America praising black lives and blasting blue (police officer) and white lives. But blacks who voted for Obama at rates approaching nearly 100% have been left with nothing but higher unemployment, crime and less prosperity than whites. So, it was no surprise that Michelle Obama gave a fantastic speech Monday at the DNC in Philadelphia, stoking the rage of racial division that swept her husband into office. “I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves. And I watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent, black young women, playing with their dogs on the White House lawn. And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters — and all our sons and daughters — now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States.” Curiously, Michelle didn’t mention that while her black daughters were on the White House lawn playing, her husband was inside plotting ways to exploit race to win battles. He blamed his inability to negotiate and cut deals with a GOP Congress on his race and rushed to defend black men killed by cops before the facts were in. In addition to making amends with Hillary in Philadelphia, Michelle should have praised her husband for being an example to her daughters and kids everywhere that blacks are truly equal. But talk of equality does drive Democrats to the polls today. White president Lyndon B. Johnson and black president Obama are both Democrats who capitalized on race to win. And to borrow from Michelle’s words, “that is the kind of president that Hillary Clinton will be.”)

http://www.govexec.com/management/2016/07/another-chance-feds-say-how-they-really-feel-about-how-they-are-being-treated/130228/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Merit Systems Protection Board on Tuesday announced that it is inviting federal employees and managers to begin completing the latest of its surveys on issues such as whether workers are being treated fairly, and recruitment and retention. The Web-based Merit Principles Survey will go out to 25 major agencies and departments, and 120,000 employees will be invited to complete it over the next four weeks. It is narrower in scope, smaller in sampling size and less frequent than the Office of Personnel Management’s annual Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey. Voluntary and confidential, the MSPB questionnaire focuses on merit system principles and human resources policy and practice, the MSPB said in a release. The 2016 version of the statutorily required survey will inquire about “employee engagement, fair treatment and nondiscrimination, recruitment and retention, sexual and non-sexual harassment, HR services and addressing poor performance,” the board said. MSPB asked employee unions to encourage participation. To minimize burdens, MSPB will administer three versions of the questionnaire, each focused on a portion of the larger topics. Results and subsequent recommendations will go to “the president, Congress, and other federal decision-makers to promote merit-based and effective human resources policies and practices,” the board announced. A 2013 version of the survey found that more than a quarter of federal employees believed their supervisors demonstrated favoritism.)

ABC7
— The Sandack mystery continues – Chuck Goudie, Barb Markoff and Ross Weidner
http://abc7chicago.com/politics/rep-sandack-quits-top-gop-post-over-internet-scam/1444005/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a heavily blacked-out police report provided to the I-Team by Downers Grove police, Republican state Rep. Ronald L. Sandack made an allegation on July 14 of “an Internet scam.” Ten days later Sandack announced he was resigning from his elected position, claiming he was suffering the effects of “cyber security issues.” Neither Sandack at the time he quit, nor the suburban police report obtained Tuesday afternoon, offer any clarity as to what actually happened-or why it was serious enough to warrant resignation. Sandack has not responded to our numerous requests for information. A person who answered the front door at his home today said that the ex-legislator was at work. He is a partner at a downtown Chicago law firm and has not been available there. Sandack said in a cryptic statement on Sunday that he was forced to re-evaluate his “continued public service” due to the threat. The mostly-redacted police report does put the date of the “Internet scam” as July 7, a full week before Sandack actually reported whatever it was to police. There is no explanation why it took one week to report something serious enough to eventually cause his resignation. Oddly, Mr. Sandack was a voracious social media communicator until the cyber threat occurred-said to have been fake accounts set-up in his name (or his family members.) Currently, his Facebook and Twitter pages are down and there is no trace of whatever bogus accounts may have been established. Downers Grove police have apparently assigned at detectives to look into the allegation, according to the report. However, police officials have offered no additional details, clarity or assistance to help the public understand what may have occurred, whether there is any kind of public threat or the status of the investigation.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— GOP State Rep. Ron Sandack reported ‘Internet scam’ to cops – Chris Fusco
http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/gop-state-rep-ron-sandack-reported-internet-scam-to-cops/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican state Rep. Ronald L. Sandack, a top of ally of Gov. Bruce Rauner, went to the police department in his hometown to report an “Internet scam” earlier this month — but a report about the incident reveals little about what led Sandack to abruptly resign his seat from the Illinois House over the weekend. Sandack issued a statement to the political blog Capitol Fax on Sunday saying that “cyber security issues” forced him to re-evaluate his “continued public service.” But the police report released Tuesday afternoon by the Downers Grove Police Department offers no details about what might have happened to Sandack as virtually the entire narrative is blacked out. Sandack didn’t immediately return a telephone call seeking comment. More to come on this developing story.)

DAILY HERALD
— Decision on Sandack’s replacement still days away – Robert Sanchez
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160726/news/160729247/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: DuPage GOP leaders will have the biggest say in choosing his replacement, but the Will County Republican Central Committee must be consulted because a small number of precincts in the 81st District are in that county. Krajewski said he’s scheduled to meet Saturday morning with Havel. In the meantime, he’s asking other Republicans interested in the position to send him their resume. “We’ve got to see who the candidates are,” Krajewski said. Depending on the number of applicants, a decision could come Saturday or Sunday, he said. On Monday, Krajewski said David S. Olsen is the leading candidate to replace Sandack. Olsen, 27, of Downers Grove, serves as vice chairman of the College of DuPage board of trustees, as a Downers Grove village commissioner and as vice chairman of the Downers Grove Township Republican Organization. He has expressed interest in the House seat in the past. . .If he’s chosen as Sandack’s successor, one decision Olsen needs to make is whether he will resign from the Downers Grove village council or from COD board. “That’s something that has to be discussed with my mayor, Mayor (Martin) Tully, and with (COD board) Chairman Deanne Mazzochi, and with Brian Krajewski and others,” Olsen said. “I think it’s premature to speculate on what I would do.” He said his main goal is to do “the right thing” for residents in Downers Grove, COD’s district and the 81st District.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/zorn/ct-ron-sandack-illinois-republican-resigns-perspec-zorn-0727-jm-20160726-column.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Something doesn’t quite add up in the “official” story of why Illinois House Republican floor leader Ron Sandack abruptly resigned over the weekend. The scrappy Downers Grove pol said in a brief statement that “cybersecurity issues” prompted him to “re-evaluate” his political career and immediately step down in order to (stop me if you’ve heard this before) spend more time with his family. Reportedly, the cybersecurity issue in question was that spoofers had created fake Facebook and Twitter accounts in his name, thus threatening to damage his reputation. That’s certainly an unpleasant development if true. And the claim is plausible. Social media have yet to solve the impostor problem, as I was reminded just the other day when I got a Facebook friend request that appeared to be from another Chicago newspaper columnist with whom I was already connected. The request not only used his name but also a photo of him swiped from his real page. Online impostors don’t target just pols, pundits and other well-known figures. I routinely get Facebook friend requests from those who have either assumed others’ identities or simply invented personas, often of scantily clad women, in what seems to be a desperate and feeble attempt to peddle cheap sunglasses or other consumer goods.)

(FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT: DuPage County GOP Chairman Brian Krajewski and Will County GOP Chairman Kathy Havel put out an official notice of meeting to formally declare vacancies for the official office as well as the GOP nomination in Illinois House District 81. Chairmen Krajewski and Havel plan to meet this weekend to fill the vacancies. “We were all surprised by State Rep. Sandack’s resignation, but we will act both swiftly and thoroughly to name a replacement,” Krajewski said. “We hope to name someone by the end of this weekend so that our new Representative can get up and running as soon as possible.”)

ALTON DAILY NEWS
— Search Begins for Sandack Replacement – Cole Lauterbach
http://www.altondailynews.com/news/details.cfm?clientid=17&id=219714#.V5bf2BF9XHk
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Suburban Chicago GOP political leaders are looking for a replacement for a prominent state representative who abruptly resigned Sunday. Suburban Chicago State Rep. Ron Sandack (R-Dist. 81) resigned from his seat in the Illinois General Assembly on Sunday, citing a series of malicious cyber attacks in which his online profiles were cloned numerous times. Sandack said in a statement that he would work with the GOP to ensure that his replacement is elected in November. Sandack’s replacement will be appointed by DuPage County Republican Chairman Brian Krajewski, who said the resignation was very unexpected. “I hadn’t heard anything about what was transpiring, so it came as a big surprise that he was resigning immediately,” Krajewski said. Among the candidates for Sandack’s replacement, Krajewski said some names stand out, but stressed that the appointee will have to be politically electable. Two whom Krajewski mentioned are Downers Grove Commissioner David Olsen, who is likely the favorite, and Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully. The appointed GOP representative will face Democrat Greg Hose in November. Downers Grove State Rep. Ron Sandack (R-Dist. 81) announced his immediate resignation from his seat on Sunday. The abrupt resignation comes while Sandack has been battling a malicious social media campaign. “…After some cyber security issues arose, I began to re-evaluate my continued public service,” Sandack said in a statement. “I have always recognized there is no greater privilege than being a father and husband. My duties in Springfield have meant missing a lot of events in the lives of my children. I am no longer willing to miss important family events.” House Republican Minority Leader Jim Durkin (R-Dist. 81) released a statement. “Ron Sandack is a dedicated and caring public servant,” Durkin said. “I want to thank him for his service to his constituents and the entire State of Illinois. I wish him well in his future endeavors.”)

— Durkin on Sandack cyber attack: ‘I don’t think it is’ politically motivated – Natasha Korecki
http://www.politico.com/states/illinois/story/2016/07/durkin-on-sandack-cyber-attack-i-dont-think-it-is-politically-motivated-104169
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republican Leader Jim Durkin said on Monday he does not believe the alleged cyber attacks that prompted GOP leader Ron Sandack’s abrupt resignation were politically motivated. In an interview Monday with POLITICO Illinois, Durkin, who is a close personal colleague and friend of Sandack, was asked whether he believed the motive was political. “I don’t think it is. I don’t believe that’s the case,” said Durkin. Asked about the possibility of an underlying scandal, he said, “I am not aware of anything else, no.” “I spoke with Rep. Sandack yesterday and he explained to me the decision he made was personal, was family-related. And I will never second-guess anyone’s decision for that reason. I wish him and his family well,” Durkin said. “Ron is not only a trusted colleague but he’s a personal friend. He leaves a void within our caucus but one that we’ll be able to in time fill. His contribution to the state and Republican Party is immeasurable, we wish him well in the next stage of his life.” On Sunday evening, Sandack said in a text that his resignation was effective Monday and that the cybersecurity issues gave him pause over his legislative life: “my family welfare is paramount.” He did not respond when asked whether that meant he feared for his family’s safety. Sandack would not talk by phone. Last week, Sandack, who was prolific on social media, took down his Facebook and Twitter accounts. His official legislative web site is still up. Sandack was the target of robocalls recently that accused him of accosting the chief legal counsel for Democrats on the House floor following a heated vote on the budget. Video at the time showed Sandack touching her arm while asking why voting was closed before a roll call was made. In 2014, Sandack was targeted by conservatives because of his vote in support of a new same-sex marriage law. Already, there’s talk of appointing Sandack’s successor and replacing him on the November ballot. One top candidate widely mentioned is David Olsen, a member of the Downers Grove City Council. Sandack leaves with nearly $130,000 in his campaign account, according to the most recent election filing.)

— TOP-RANKING GOP ILLINOIS STATE LAWMAKER RON SANDACK RESIGNS – Chuck Goudie
http://abc7chicago.com/politics/gop-state-lawmaker-ron-sandack-resigns/1441639/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Rep. Ron Sandack, one of Illinois’ top Republicans, has mysteriously and suddenly resigned without explanation, only saying that it’s due to “cyber-security issues.”  The I-Team has learned that there is a police investigation underway in his west suburban home district of Downers Grove. However, neither police nor Sandack are talking about the nature of the investigation. . .FBI, Illinois State Police and DuPage County officials said they are not investigating the alleged intrusion on Sandack’s accounts, but that Downers Grove police are handling the case. Police have not yet made the paperwork public, despite an open records request today by the I-Team. Sandack is a partner in a Chicago law firm and was running for re-election to the General Assembly in November. Now the Republican Party has a month to tap someone to finish his term and slate a replacement on the ballot.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-ron-sandack-resigns-illinois-house-20160725-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A suburban Republican lawmaker known for throwing plenty of verbal jabs during the 18-month stalemate at the Capitol said Monday that he abruptly resigned because politics is getting “too ugly.” Rep. Ron Sandack, of Downers Grove, said he made his decision to step down from the Illinois House after several fraudulent social media accounts were set up in his name in recent weeks. He also cited recent automated telephone calls accusing him of accosting a Democratic staff member. “I wasn’t looking forward to an ugly general election as it were, this additional stuff added undue pressure,” said Sandack, who was up for re-election this November. “It made my family uneasy and made me re-evaluate my priorities. Politics has gotten too ugly. I don’t need it, and my family doesn’t deserve it.” Sandack would not say if he believed the social media shenanigans was politically motivated, but said he filed a report with the Downers Grove Police Department. Downers Grove police did not immediately say whether they had any police reports involving Sandack, instead suggesting the Chicago Tribune file an open-records request. The Tribune did so, but police have five days to respond. The six-year lawmaker was an outspoken defender of Gov. Bruce Rauner, serving as his House floor leader. Sandack’s desire to debate also bled into his online presence, and he frequently took to Facebook and Twitter to let his viewpoints be known. Last week, Sandack suddenly deleted his Facebook and Twitter accounts. Asked Monday if any compromising information was accessed before he deleted his social media accounts, Sandack said “no.” The former lawmaker said he is looking forward to life as a “private citizen” and will continue his work at a Chicago law firm. Late last month, Sandack appeared in a segment on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” where he said Democrats are to blame for Illinois’ budget impasse. More recently, he’s been the subject of automated attack phone calls accusing him of accosting a Democratic staff member. That stems from a heated debate at the end of the spring session. House Republicans were furious when Democrats quickly adjourned after House Speaker Michael Madigan muscled through a budget bill that ultimately stalled in the Senate. Republicans asked for a double check that required each lawmaker voting for the measure to be verified as in their seat. But that didn’t happen. Incredulous, Sandack went to the front of the chamber to ask Madigan’s chief legal counsel why the verified roll call was never held and touched her on the arm. Democrats later accused Sandack of accosting her, which Sandack denied. “I did not grab her. I did get in her face and talk to her,” Sandack said at the time. Sandack first joined the legislature in 2010, when he was appointed to fill the Senate seat of Dan Cronin, who stepped down to serve as DuPage County Board chairman. Sandack moved to the House in 2013 and was up for re-election Nov. 8 against Democratic attorney Greg Hose, also of Downers Grove. Republican leaders have 30 days to name Sandack’s replacement. The Daily Herald reported Monday that a leading contender is David Olsen, a Downers Grove village commissioner and vice chairman of the Downers Grove Township Republican Organization. House Republican leader Jim Durkin said Sandack was “a dedicated and caring public servant.” “I spoke with Ron yesterday and he indicated that his decision was personal and for the benefit of his family,” Durkin told the Tribune via text message. “I respect his decision.)

— College of DuPage, Downers Grove leader Olsen front-runner to fill Sandack’s seat – Marie Wilson
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160725/news/160729384/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A rising star in the DuPage County Republican Party, David S. Olsen, appears to be the leading candidate to replace 81st District state Rep. Ron Sandack of Downers Grove, who has resigned his seat citing “cyber security issues.”  Olsen, 27, of Downers Grove, already serves as vice chairman of the College of DuPage board of trustees, as a Downers Grove village commissioner and as vice chairman of the Downers Grove Township Republican Organization. He has expressed interest in seeking the 81st House seat in the past and Downers Grove Township and DuPage County GOP leaders say he’s the “front-runner” to fill the remainder of Sandack’s term and likely be listed on the Nov. 8 ballot against Downers Grove Democrat Greg Hose. “Right now it sounds like David Olsen is at the top of everyone’s wish list,” said Bob Grogan, Downers Grove Township Republican Organization chairman. “He’s a well-liked young man.”  Olsen, who works as an ethics and compliance analyst for BP Corp. North America Inc., did not immediately return calls seeking comment. But Republican leaders say he likely will retain his College of DuPage seat but resign from the Downers Grove village council if he’s chosen as Sandack’s successor. “He was looking at this (state) seat in the primary a year ago,” Brian Krajewski, DuPage County Republican chairman, said. The 81st District includes all or parts of Darien, Downers Grove, Lisle, Naperville, Westmont and Woodridge in DuPage and Will counties. “Clearly he’s performed tremendously in his role as commissioner in Downers Grove, was elevated to mayor pro tem and was recently tapped to help clean up the mess at COD,” Krajewski said. Olsen was appointed to the College of DuPage board in February to replace former Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, who resigned in December. His selection — which was supported by Gov. Bruce Rauner — was significant because it broke a 3-3 tie among trustees that plagued the college and stalled business for months following Hamilton’s unexpected departure. COD board Chairwoman Deanne Mazzochi did not immediately return calls seeking comment. Krajewski said Olsen likely will remain on the college panel until the spring election to prevent another stalemate. Olsen already has said he does not intend to seek a full term on the COD board in the spring election. “He helps bring people together,” Krajewski said. “I know his intentions there were never to rerun in April anyway for that position.” Olsen — or whoever is picked to run in Sandack’s place in the Nov. 8 election — will need time to devote to running a campaign, Krajewski and Grogan said. That campaign would pit the chosen candidate against Hose, an attorney and Downers Grove village commissioner who is the Democrat seeking the 81st seat. With his opponent unknown, Hose said he’ll keep his focus on the issues — largely the state’s unpaid bills, economic issues and rising property taxes. “I think that’s the best way to do it. This race doesn’t need to be about personality,” Hose said. “I’m just going to keep focusing on what’s important to the people of the 81st District and making the world a little better for my children and everyone else’s children.” Officials expect the decision on Sandack’s replacement will be made relatively quickly. The Republican party has 30 days from Sandack’s resignation effective Monday to fill his seat and officials have until Aug. 25 to fill the vacancy on the November ballot. Krajewski said the person chosen by DuPage Republican leaders will get the seat and the ballot slot, but the Will County Republican Central Committee also will have a say because a small number of precincts in the 81st District are within Will County’s borders. Will County Republican Chairwoman Kathy Havel did not immediately return a call seeking comment.)
— Republican leader Jim Durkin: Ron Sandack will be missed – Mike Riopell
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160725/news/160729391/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Illinois House Republican leader said Monday that Ron Sandack, the suburban lawmaker who resigned abruptly citing “cyber security issues,” will be missed. The sudden resignation of former state Rep. Sandack, a Downers Grove Republican, became effective Monday, according to a letter received by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office and other leaders. “Ron Sandack is a dedicated and caring public servant. I want to thank him for his service to his constituents and the entire State of Illinois,” House Republican Leader Jim Durkin of Western Springs said in a statement. “I wish him well in his future endeavors,” “I spoke with Ron yesterday afternoon and respect his decision to resign,” a separate message to lawmakers said. “I am grateful for the work he has done collectively on behalf of our caucus and for his constituents. He will be missed.” Sandack had become a vocal supporter of Gov. Bruce Rauner and a key member of the House Republicans, acting as a floor leader at the Capitol during hours of legislative debates. “It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve the people of the 81st district for the past four years in Springfield,” Sandack said in a statement over the weekend. “But after some cyber security issues arose, I began to re-evaluate my continued public service.” Sandack, a second-term member of the Illinois House, hasn’t responded to requests for comment and hasn’t elaborated further. “I have always recognized there is no greater privilege than being a father and husband,” his statement said. “My duties in Springfield has meant missing a lot of events in the lives of my children. I am no longer willing to miss important family events.” His resignation was a particular surprise because his profile has risen quickly among Illinois Republicans, becoming a prominent member of Durkin’s team in Springfield. His prolific tweeting raised his profile, too, so the disappearance of his Twitter accounts last week were a cause for questions that led to his resignation announcement over the weekend. Last month, he appeared on a segment of the Daily Show about the Illinois budget war. “Ron Sandack is an integral part of our leadership team,” said state Rep. Ed Sullivan, a Mundelein Republican. Sullivan decided not to run for re-election, at least partly because of actions of protesters at his home, and said Sandack made a personal decision to leave the House. Local Republican officials will get to pick Sandack’s replacement in the coming days.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to PEW, most of the biggest counties have become more presidentially Democratic over the past four decades. For example, Illinois’ DuPage County, a longtime GOP stronghold, went for Gerald Ford by more than 40 percentage points in 1976 (68.8% to 28.3%). But it went for Obama twice, by nearly 11 percentage points in 2008 and by 1.1 percentage points in 2012. . .In recent decades Americans have increasingly sorted themselves politically. A 2014 Pew Research Center report on political polarization found that liberals are about twice as likely as conservatives to live in urban areas, while conservatives are more concentrated in rural areas.)

http://www.investors.com/etfs-and-funds/retirement/7-expenses-that-will-fall-once-you-retire/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Are you worried about being able to afford the retirement lifestyle you want? Well, you can relax a little bit. That’s because your spending is likely to fall once you retire. In fact, odds are it will decline in a whopping 7 of 8 key categories, according to the latest data from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). That means you will probably need less money than you thought. That should make your overall retirement planning a little easier. The less you need, the easier it is to reach that goal. After retirement, the average 65- to 79-year-old’s household spending falls to $41,904 a year. That’s just 77% of what it was before retirement from age 50 to age 64: $54,356. Even if your income and spending are much higher than the average household’s, you should expect your spending to shift into a lower gear once you retire. The 25% of Americans who are the most affluent — their annual income range starts at about $102,000 and goes into the millions — spend about $104,000 a year on average from age 50 to 54, their peak consumption years. But by ages 65 to 69, their annual spending falls to about $82,000. Already making do with less, low-income households tend to see a smaller decline in spending after retirement. For the average retiree household, the biggest decline in spending is for insurance and pensions. Spending in this category for the average 65- to 79-year-old retiree household plunges to just 40% of what it was pre-retirement from ages 50 to 64. That category includes contributions to retirement accounts and pensions. The decline makes perfect sense since retirees are far more likely to be taking withdrawals from retirement accounts than stuffing money into them. The only category where spending increases is health care. Spending averages $3,935 a year for pre-retirees. It climbs to 126% of that, $4,959, for 65- to 79-year-old retiree households. The other six categories where average annual spending declines are housing, transportation, food, entertainment, apparel and “other,” which includes spending for things like reading, tobacco, alcoholic beverages, education and personal care.)
