(FROM THE ARTICLE: If Illinois’ political journalists were the only ones voting on Tuesday, J.B. Pritzker, Mike Madigan and the rest of the state’s Democrats would win in a landslide. Chicago City Wire analysis of the primary voting records of 100 leading Illinois political journalists found that 93 percent of the primary votes they’ve collectively cast have been for Democrats, versus just seven percent for Republicans. All told, out of 424 total primary votes recorded by the Illinois State Board of Elections (ISBE), 395 of them were for Democrats. In the March 2018 primary, 57 of the 100 journalists reviewed voted in the Democrat primary. One, Fox 32 Political Editor Mike Flannery, voted in the Republican one. Of the 100 journalist voting records analyzed, 79 had cast more Democrat ballots than Republican ones and 18 recorded no primary votes. One journalist cast an equal number of Democrat and Republican ballots, and two cast more ballots for Republicans than Democrats. Those two are Capitol Fax’s Rich Miller (5 GOP / 4 DEM) and Doug Finke, a veteran reporter of the Springfield State Journal-Register (1/0). Miller, who founded the popular Capitol Fax newsletter in 1993, voted in Democrat primaries in 1994, 1996 and 1998, then Republican ones in 2000, 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016 before pulling a Democrat primary ballot again this past March. Finke has cast one primary ballot since 1992, in a four-way 2006 Republican primary that included State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, Jim Oberweis, Bill Brady and Ron Gidwitz. (FROM THE ARTICLE: To calculate the size of the Republican base, just look at the president’s job-approval number. Find that loyal Trump supporter, goes the logic, and you’re looking at a voter who will stick with Republican candidates through hell or high water. That number, according to a recent poll, is about 39% of statewide likely voters. The nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California found that this core group of GOP voters is centered among the ranks of white male voters. Many live near San Diego or in the Central Valley. Most are registered Republicans, though some are unaffiliated “independent” voters. Many attended college but didn’t leave with a degree. Given the animus of the state’s elected officials toward Trump’s policies, 39% support for the president among likely California voters is a reasonably strong showing. Conservative and moderate Republicans loved it. But not long after Rauner took office, the right revolted. When it was time to seek reelection, he drew a primary challenge from State Rep. Jeanne Ives. “You know I started to lose hope that he was really going to be on the track fiscally as soon as he entered office,” Ives said. “And it had to do with him expanding massively pre-school in a state where we couldn’t afford it. We were going to try to grab on to $20 million per year on a federal grant. But we were going to have to phony up $400 million just to get that money.” It’s not just finances. Ives’ anger exploded when Rauner approved a law protecting undocumented immigrants and then later signed a measure expanding taxpayer-subsidized abortions. “I’m a social conservative and we’ve taken it on the chin, even under a Republican governor, we’ve not gotten what we wanted. The promises were not kept,” Ives said. Rauner defeated Ives by a razor thin margin, about 20,000 votes. After the primary, party leaders emphasized the need for unity. But Rauner and Ives did not do that. When asked if she did everything she could to help him win, Ives said: “That was never my job. I was very upfront with people.” Ives predicts Rauner will lose, but she says she will vote for him. . .McSweeney has been harsh critic of Governor Rauner, but he’s sticking with him in the race. “Our best hope is to reelect Rauner because he’s not going to opening promote tax increases. But I’d be a hypocrite if I said positive things about the first term. It’s been a fiasco across the board,” McSweeney said. Like Ives, the McSweeney fears Rauner could be doomed. (FROM THE ARTICLE: As the election approaches, Wheaton political science faculty have taken particular interest in the Roskam vs. Casten race. Dr. Amy Black noted that the race has changed from “too close to call” to “leans Democratic” in recent articles and polls. “The momentum seems to be moving in Casten’s favor,” Black said. She predicts that many late voters will choose to vote against the incumbent. “Since voters typically know the person currently in office, those who are still ambivalent at the end are likely showing a tendency to choose the new alternative.” Dr. Bryan McGraw voiced his view that the midterm election was still too close to call: “I honestly don’t know,” he said. “I suspect it will come down to a relatively small number of votes, maybe less than 500, and it’s impossible to tell at that small of a margin.” While McGraw still sees the race as too close to call, he agrees that this race marks a change in Wheaton’s congressional district. “Regardless of who wins, it’s clear that the district is trending more centrist, which will have a constraining effect on the representative. And which means we will probably see competitive elections here for the foreseeable future.” Some Wheaton students, like senior political science major Emma Wen, will be voting for the first time in this year’s midterm election. “I believe strongly in fulfilling one’s civic duty to vote — it is a privilege and right which should not be taken lightly,” she said. Bruce Rauner, who must reclaim the GOP base to win re-election, showed up in the audience at President Donald Trump’s southern Illinois rally on Saturday, though Trump never mentioned the governor in his remarks nor invited him to the stage. If it was a deliberate snub, it was a remarkable rebuff — a Republican president ignoring a GOP governor who is struggling to win a second term against Democrat J.B. Pritzker. Or Rauner’s team may have said it’s OK to ignore him as he continues to try to have it both ways when it comes to Trump. While avoiding Rauner, Trump did give a big boost to three of the four Republican Illinois House members facing tough re-election races: Reps. Mike Bost, Rodney Davis and, in a big surprise, Randy Hultgren. Hultgren traveled more than 300 miles from his Chicago area district to Murphysboro to plant his flag with the president in the unannounced appearance. I heard that Rauner’s team was trying to arrange a last minute private meeting with Trump, a move calculated to try to appease the GOP base he has alienated so much that he barely won re-nomination in the March Illinois GOP primary. I’m not sure that private meeting ever took place. I did see Rauner pictured in the crowd standing next to Republican National Committee Finance Chair Todd Ricketts, who did visit with Trump at the rally. It’s hard to see how this fence straddling will work well for Rauner. While he avoided being caught in the same camera frame as Trump — which would depress his support among the independents and moderate Republicans he needs — he still was not embraced by Trump. Trump is very popular with the segments of the Republican base Rauner knows he needs. Rauner on Saturday was trying to catch a ride on Trump’s coat tails without paying much of a price. The rally was billed as a boost for Bost. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Ill., in a fight with Democratic nominee Seat Casten in the 6th district, was the only one of the four GOP targets who did not attend the Trump rally, which made sense since his re-election depends on wooing voters who are turned off by Trump’s divisive politics and scorched rhetoric. Hultgren is in a tight race with Democratic nominee Lauren Underwood in the 14th congressional district, in prior years safe GOP turf. Hultgren needs Trump’s help to turn out Republicans who otherwise sit out mid-terms. (FROM THE ARTICLE: BARTLETT, Ill. — The Republican Party is on the ropes in America’s upscale suburbs, usually friendly territory that is poised to rebuke President Trump and deliver the House majority to the Democrats, in the final days of a volatile fall campaign. In suburban Chicago, Rep. Peter Roskam is battling to survive amid political headwinds Republicans last experienced in the late 2000s with dual blue waves that booted the GOP from power in Congress and elevated Illinois Democrat Barack Obama to the White House. Roskam always beat the odds, overcoming challenges more daunting than his Democratic opponent this year, businessman Sean Casten. None of these hurdles were Trump. In galvanizing a loyal coalition of conservative populists that won an unlikely 2016 victory simultaneously drove moderate Republican women and independents in the suburbs into the arms of the Democrats, putting the House in play and the GOP majority in serious jeopardy. In Roskam’s district, Democrat Hillary Clinton defeated Trump by 7 points; similar results played out in nearly two-dozen traditionally Republican seats. “I’ve said early on in this presidency that the president should stop tweeting; just throw the Twitter feed away and there’s really nothing good I’ve seen that has happened as a result,” Roskam said Wednesday in an interview with the Washington Examiner, after a campaign swing through the 6th Congressional District. “When it’s been appropriate for me to stand up to the administration, I’ve done that, and I’ve been vocal.” Putting an “independent check” on Trump is a big theme of the Casten campaign. This is “something that Peter Roskam has failed to do as he’s voted with Trump 94 percent of the time,” Casten spokesman Greg Bales said. Casten declined a request for an interview. The Trump revolt in suburbia is fueling the Democratic Party just down the road in the neighboring 14th Congressional District, a roughly half-rural, half-suburban seat drawn to protect Republican incumbents and that voted for the president over Clinton by nearly 4 points. Republican Rep. Randy Hultgren is in measurably better shape than Roskam, according to the available polling data and the analysis of party insiders on both sides of the aisle. But the congressman’s dynamic Democratic challenger, Obama administration veteran Lauren Underwood, an African-American woman, is forcing Hultgren to fight for a fifth term. The rise of quality Democratic candidates in usually sleepy GOP districts like the 14th is a key component of what House Republicans are spread so thin as they labor to defend their 23-seat majority. Early Thursday morning, more than two-dozen Underwood supporters packed a meeting room at a local community college for a round table on climate change and the environment. This sort of fresh energy in GOP districts on the margins of competitiveness is boosting Democratic prospects, putting even more pressure on Republican incumbents in battleground districts that are on the frontlines of the Democrats’ assault. “You are finding a lot of women, in particular, that are motivated and angry and upset and are actually taking that next step to actually get involved, not only through traditional routes in terms of the county party structures or the county parties, but also just kind of forming their own pop-up groups,” said Kristina Zahorik, chairwoman of the Democratic Party in McHenry County, in the 14th District. “In previous cycles, we didn’t see that,” Zahorik added. Democrats less than two weeks before Election Day are maintaining a generic ballot lead of between 7 and 8 points, just enough for them to win the House but not enough to guarantee victory. Some Republicans, though still in danger, have seen their numbers improve as GOP enthusiasm has ticked up in the aftermath of the explosive confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Roskam, hard-working and battle-tested, is beginning to feel a change in the tide that the sixth-term congressman said reminds him of past hard-fought finishes in tough environments. On Wednesday, a relaxed Roskam accepted the endorsement of a local chamber of commerce before assembled dignitaries and employees at an automotive repair shop in Crystal Lake, a leafy community of 40,000 in his district, as he talked up tax reform and its impact on the economy. The $1.3 trillion tax overhaul has been a tough sell in affluent blue-state suburbs, as voters calculate the loss of the federal deduction for state and local taxes. Roskam, as member of the House tax-writing committee, has come under fire for the legislation in some quarters. But signs of pressure were nonexistent as he traversed the district, asking voters to talk about how the law improved their finances. The Roskam campaign is hitting Casten for supporting a hike in the gas tax, an issue that could offset blowback for his support of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Backng a gas tax is a curious position in an area where voters are so dependent on their automobiles for transportation. Roskam said his opposition is “common sense,” an approach that he believes has helped him weather past storms, and will do so again. “I love campaigns like this — because campaigns like this are about worldview.
