On Aug. 20, journalist Brian Karem, the White House correspondent for Playboy, filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump and White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham asking the federal district court in Washington, D.C., to vacate the White House’s 30-day suspension of his hard pass and order that it be immediately restored. Today, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press filed a friend-of-the-court brief in support of Karem, arguing that the White House must provide meaningful due process before denying, suspending, or revoking a journalist’s security credentials, and failure to do so in this case violates settled law in the D.C. Circuit and constitutional protections guaranteeing the flow of information to the public. “The White House cannot suspend or revoke journalists’ credentials without due process, based on vague standards that have never been publicly articulated,” said Bruce Brown, executive director of the Reporters Committee. “Under clear legal precedent, Mr. Karem’s credentials must be restored.” Before the White House had made its final determination to suspend Karem’s hard pass on Aug. 16, the Reporters Committee issued a statement expressing its concern over the “preliminary decision” to suspend his hard pass and reiterated its commitment to ensuring that journalists have the access needed to do their jobs effectively. (FROM THE ARTICLE: The village of Bolingbrook Board of Trustees voted Tuesday night to prohibit cannabis business establishments within its boundaries. The trustees voted 5-1 in favor of the prohibition. Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar said he was in favor of prohibiting cannabis businesses in the village and decried how the state government passed the legislation to legalize it. “I philosophically have a real problem with governments which have turned to drugs and gambling to balance their budgets,” he said. “That’s what the state’s come to.” The village’s ordinance cited the state’s Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, which allows municipalities to prohibit adult-use cannabis business establishments. Ken Teppel, the village’s public safety director, spoke about the Bolingbrook Police Department’s opposition to allowing cannabis businesses in town. He also talked about the challenges posed to police departments in other states that have already legalized recreational cannabis use, like Colorado. For example, Teppel said cannabis businesses have been targets for theft because they deal solely in cash to be in compliance with federal banking laws. He added that, for police, it’s more difficult to investigate such crimes without a paper trail. He also talked about other problems like black markets developing around legal dispensaries, the high potency of the drug nowadays, potential dangers with flammable materials used to grow the plant, and trying to develop a test for impaired drivers who have used the drug. During public comments, the opinions among the handful of residents who spoke were mixed. Trustee Bob Jaskiewicz was the only “no” vote. He said it was a mistake to not have a public hearing before holding a vote on the prohibition. “I want us to consider other points as to why a dispensary would be a good thing,” Jaskiewicz said. Claar told Jaskiewicz to take up the issue with state legislators because, unlike other states, which held a referendum, Illinois “chose to ignore the public” and didn’t ask voters. Claar said lawmakers were already discussing a possible trailer bill to clarify and fix issues with the initial law that passed. The mayor also made sure to emphasize that the ordinance was only prohibiting commercial businesses selling cannabis and not recreational use of the drug. Trustee Mary Alexander Basta made the point that the ordinance could be revised in the future. Recreational cannabis use and possession will be legal in Illinois starting Jan. 1, 2020.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Nearly all college experiences begin with a series of orientation sessions. Most start with the assumption that you are the cursed offspring of a flawed society. You come to college not to be educated but to be reeducated. You have imbibed of racism, sexism, and homophobia. And for some outrageous amount of tuition that will send many of you into perpetual debt, the modern-day Gletkins of academia will purge you of these impure thoughts. The brainwashing will begin in orientation but will not end there. If you live in a dormitory, there will be required sensitivity sessions run by minions from the office of residence life. These generally are graduate students who are shouldering the intellectual rigors of a degree in education administration. The aim of these sessions, which are reminiscent of those imposed on Soviet factory workers to remove their “mechanistic thinking,” is to reeducate you to rid yourself of the values your parents taught you. Many of you, irrespective of discipline, will be compelled to complete a multicultural requirement. These courses are compulsory because otherwise no rational person would sit through them. Your multicultural requirement might be taken in African-American studies where, being a white person, you will learn that only whites, by definition, can be racists and all whites are racists. The evils of slavery will be pounded into you, even though your ancestors probably not only didn’t own slaves, but they also came to these shores long after slavery was abolished. Nonetheless, your skin color makes you guilty. But invoke a stereotype about black people based on their high crime and recidivism rate, and you will be admonished that to brush all black people with a single brush — especially without context — is racist. To characterize all white people as racists, however, is not a stereotype but an intellectual incision. You will learn that there is such a thing as “true truth.” This is the shared reality of an “oppressed” group whose common belief makes something true. Or in the profound words of Alexandria Octavio-Cortez, you can have moral truth without factual truth — whatever that means. In these classes, you will never say that the trans-Atlantic slave trade was the product of Africans who shifted the trans-Saharan slave trade westward. You will never point out that two African potentates, King Tegesibu of Dahomey and King Alvare of the Congo, were among the wealthiest men in the known world, having gotten rich by selling slaves. Women are equal to men in every way, and biology is not destiny. All apparent biological differences are really a function of culture. After all, we live in a world where trans-women should be able to get abortions. All genders and races should be in all the professions in proportion to their distribution in the population is the current dogma. Any departure from that is a function of cultural oppression.
