THE HILL
— Senior Democrats tout achievements as party’s generational divide widens – SCOTT WONG (DIERSEN: All my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes support the federal government’s “up-or-out” policy for its employees who are non-veteran, White, and/or male. Will political parties impose “up-or-out” policies like the federal government has for its non-veteran White male employees? For example, you would be “out” if you do not make a) township/ward party chairman or municipal/township/ward elected office by age 25, b) county party chairman or county elected office by age 30, c) state central committee member or state representative by age 35, d) state party officer or state senator by age 40, e) state party chairman, statewide office, U.S. representative, or U.S. senator by age 45, and f) RNC/DNC chairman, state governor, or U.S. President by age 50.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— As Supreme Court ruling threatens labor, teacher union leader says it’s been adding members. . .SEIU-Healthcare Illinois wants higher minimum wage – Rick Pearson
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-morning-spin-monday-edition-20180629-story.html
— Impact of tax changes in 2018 – Elliot Raphaelson (DIERSEN: Government should encourage marriage and homeownership. Therefore, Roskam should increase the $10,000 SALT cap to $20,000 for married filing jointly.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/sns-201806192045–tms–savingsgctnzy-b20180619-20180619-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Other changes to the tax code will also impact taxpayer decisions. For example, starting in 2018, there will be a deduction cap of $10,000 on the amount of state and local income and property taxes, known as SALT. This limit is per-tax return, not per person. As a result, many couples who itemized in prior years will no longer have sufficient deductions to do so. For example, a couple that is eligible for the $10,000 deduction will need an additional $14,000 in deductions for charity, mortgage interest, medical expenses and so forth in order for itemizing to be worthwhile. The bottom line is that many couples will be using the standard deduction in 2018 who, in the past, would itemize.)
— The sorry history of journalists murdered in the U.S. for doing their job – Pat Morrison (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those who have done the most to stop me from putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-perspec-newsroom-journalists-murder-fake-news-trump-charlie-hebdo-0702-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Every day, and now more and more each year, newspaper reporters and radio, TV and online news reporters across this country get hate mail, hate email, even death threats. Some are preposterous; some are all too plausible. Within hours of Thursday’s murders, Buzzfeed writer Anne Helen Petersen tweeted, “I’ve had people email death threats, threaten to cut my dog’s throat, tell me I’d pay for my fake news.” We get these threats, but we never get used to them. A healthy tension between the press and politicians is as old as the country, and actually an important part of its governance. Once in a while, it gets dangerously, disastrously unhealthy. The second president of the United States, John Adams, threw newspapermen in prison under laws that, like English law, were broad enough to imprison people for almost any criticism of the government. Editors, publishers, a member of Congress and Benjamin Franklin’s publisher (who was also his grandson) were put behind bars, and countless other newspapermen were intimidated into silence, which is exactly what the targeting of journalists is meant to do: to shut them up. The election of Thomas Jefferson and the affirmation of the First Amendment soon put an end to this persecution. And today we have the sneering and insults from a presidential candidate who became the president of the United States. His “fake news” retorts try to diminish stories he doesn’t like, and the “scum” journalists who reported them. When he calls the press “the enemy of the people,” he is deploying the same term used by Nazi Germany and Stalin’s Soviet Union to demonize the leader’s own enemies.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Sen. Duckworth: Maternity leave over, will bring nursing baby to work with her – Lynn Sweet (DIERSEN: During the early 1990s, to help GAO a) hire, retain, and promote young women and b) to get rid of its employees who smoked (overwhelmingly old White men), GAO gutted the smoking room in its Chicago office and turned it into a lactation room.)
https://chicago.suntimes.com/columnists/sen-duckworth-maternity-leave-bring-nursing-baby-work/
— FBI: Man threatened July 4 attack at parade in Cleveland
https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/fbi-federal-bureau-of-investigation-cleveland-arrest-parade/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Federal authorities say they’ve arrested a man who talked about setting off a bomb at a Fourth of July parade in Cleveland and attacking people watching fireworks. Officials said Monday that the man who’s an American citizen often expressed his support for al-Qaida and said he wanted to kill members of the U.S. military. Authorities have charged Demetrius Pitts with attempted support of a terrorist organization. There are no court records listing an attorney for Pitts, who lives in the Cleveland area and was arrested Sunday. FBI Special Agent Stephen Anthony says Pitts scouted out locations this past week for a site to attack in downtown Cleveland. Anthony says it’s not clear how close Pitts was to carrying out his threats, but he says authorities couldn’t sit back and wait.)

— New perk in the HR arsenal: An on-site DePaul MBA – LYNNE MAREK (DIERSEN: I earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976, a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, and a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997. My Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates at IRS 1971-1980 and GAO 1980-1997 always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that the graduate courses that I took a) were not job-related, b) did not help me carry out my job duties, c) were taken by me to get a job in the private sector, and d) were a distraction. To keep their jobs and to get promoted, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government focused on getting rid of federal employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20180629/ISSUE01/180629833
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Chicago companies in cutthroat competition for employees are dangling another perk: on-site MBA programs, courtesy of DePaul University. Walgreens Boots Alliance, Northern Trust and the parent of Blue Cross & Blue Shield are among employers that have paired with DePaul to offer discounted graduate programs—minus the after-work rush to campus. This is a “carrot” that companies can offer, says Suzanne Depeder, associate vice president for enrollment, management and marketing at DePaul. “As the economy has heated up, so does the job market, so companies are looking at ways of attracting and retaining their talent,” she says. It’s a plus for universities, too, especially those like DePaul facing enrollment and revenue declines. While many schools have tried on-site executive education, DePaul’s Kellstadt Graduate School of Business has been more successful than most, attracting nearly 1,000 students and millions in company-subsidized tuition dollars since starting in 2013. Still, there’s a push-pull in such partnerships, and they don’t always survive. DePaul, the largest Catholic university in the U.S., with a total student headcount of nearly 23,000, saw its graduate schools gain students last year, even as its overall enrollment continued a six-year decline. DePaul cut 62 employees, or 3.5 percent of its nonfaculty staff, in June to “better position the university for the future,” it said. The Master of Business Administration is considered a must by many corporate climbers, and their employers often foot a portion of the cost. Eighty-five percent of U.S. employers plan to hire MBAs this year, down from 91 percent last year, according to survey results released in June by the Graduate Management Admission Council. The decline reflects more students seeking related, specialized master’s degrees in subjects like data science and computer engineering. Since DePaul launched its on-site Corporate Employer Outreach, or CEO, program, it has produced 421 graduates. An additional 374 are enrolled now, plus 155 coming this fall, Depeder says. An MBA from DePaul costs about $76,000, but the cost varies for on-site corporate cohorts, depending on the number of students, she says. Companies hosting DePaul’s program can tailor it to their business needs and knit together workers from disparate parts of their businesses. Employees miss out on networking with peers at other companies, but that might not be a bad thing in terms of retention.)

By then, I had worked for GAO for almost 9 years, I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years, I had become a licensed CPA in 1981, I had passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, I had earned a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, and I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976.)

BREITBART

https://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/07/01/federal-government-resources-used-promote-lgbt-pride/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Breitbart News tracked down some of LGBT Pride Month events across federal agencies, including National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Veterans Administration (VA), Library of Congress (LOC) and, the National Park Service (NPS): — The VA decided the best way to make sure veterans in the LGBT community feel comfortable seeking medical care was to put on a drag show, which traditionally is a parade of men dressing in women’s clothing and make-up. National Public Radio (NPR) reported the VA was taking a “particularly fabulous approach” for its Pride Month event, organized by the White River Junction VA Medical Center in Vermont. “Welcome to the gayest show on Earth,” the MC said to open the show in NPR’s report. “But first, I just have to say the VA is here for its queers, and we are proud to serve all veterans,” the MC said. — The CIA celebration was extensive and overseen in Washington, DC, by its new director, Gina Haspel, according to its website: During our keynote event held at CIA Headquarters the first week of June, Director Haspel introduced Major General (MG) Tammy Smith, the highest ranking and first openly gay general in US history. Director Haspel described MG Smith, saying, “She refused to give in to discrimination, stayed riveted on her goals, and proceeded to blaze a trail that will go down in the history books. Today, Major General Smith is widely recognized as a pioneer in helping LGBT men and women to fully contribute—and fully belong—to the Army family.” This event is one of several CIA activities celebrating Pride Month, including participation in the Capital DC Pride Festival and the 7th annual IC Pride Summit, of which CIA was a founder. — The LOC said its collection of works by and about the LGBT community makes it a year-round celebration but in June the library featured discussions with authors who wrote books about homosexual romance. “The library’s month-long celebration demonstrates how lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans have strengthened our country, by using their talent and creativity to help create awareness and goodwill,” the LOC website states. — NASA joined the San Francisco LGBT Pride Parade in June and also had a booth. A description of the event said: Please, stop by and say hello, take some funky photos using our infrared camera station. Learn about the autonomous helicopter that will soon be exploring the Red Planet, provided by our Aeromechanics division. Take a dive into a brilliant coral reef, brought to you by the Earth Science division. Get up close and personal with some flies and much more from our folks in the Biosciences division. Do not forget to grab a swag bag while supplies last. — The National Park Service has a striking photograph on its website of NPS employees — federal employees — marching with rainbow flags and celebrating the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City that was the scene of a violent clash between patrons and police in 1969 that is credited with starting the “gay rights movement” and was made a national historic monument during the Obama administration. This year NPS, according to a blog on its website, is already looking forward to next year’s Pride Month: June is Pride Month, and while Stonewall National Monument shares the unforgettable story of the 1969 riots year-round, this year kicks off a special countdown to World Pride in 2019. This annual event, which will be hosted by New York City in 2019, is the largest global Pride celebration. It will mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising and its pivotal role as the birthplace of the modern lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer civil rights movement.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A 60-year-old employee at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga auto plant has filed a class-action lawsuit in which he contends the company is using a rebranding effort to discriminate against workers once they turn 50. The law firm that filed the lawsuit Friday in U.S. District Court said the named plaintiff is Jonathan Manlove of Ooltewah, who is a former supervisor at the Chattanooga plant. Attorney Kevin Sharp said the company is trying to change its image to a “younger, sleeker company” after an emissions scandal that has rocked VW since 2015. The law firm said the company announced it was “becoming slimmer, leaner and younger” just before Manlove was demoted last year. The firm said he has sought other positions but has been rebuffed. Volkswagen spokesman Keith King said the company doesn’t comment on pending litigation.)

— Amazon Workers Facing Firing Can Appeal to a Jury of Their Co-Workers The hearing process has raised questions about fairness, according to workers and their attorneys. – Spencer Soper (DIERSEN: What would a jury of your co-workers be like? While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, virtually all of my co-workers disapproved of those who were conservative, Republican, draft avoiders, older, Protestant, and/or German American.)
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-06-25/amazon-workers-facing-firing-can-appeal-to-a-jury-of-their-co-workers
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Jane was working in Amazon.com Inc.’s Seattle headquarters when she was asked to a meeting with her manager and a human resources representative. They gave her a document outlining concerns about her work performance and spelled out three choices. She could quit and receive severance pay, spend the next several weeks trying to keep her job by meeting certain performance goals, or square off with her manager in a videoconference version of the Thunderdome, pleading her case with a panel of co-workers while her boss argued against her. Jane, who asked that her real name not be used to discuss a personal matter, chose the last one. The employee appeal process is Amazon’s latest experiment in managing its growing workforce of more than 500,000. When it announced the program last year, Amazon acknowledged it had been quick to fire people instead of trying to resolve problems in other ways. Executives recognized that poorly defined roles, dysfunctional teams, and peremptory managers were among the factors that often remained unexamined, according to a person familiar with the matter. Workers facing termination also lacked a forum to discuss such factors, the person says. Amazon is borrowing a page from union grievance processes that don’t apply to most corporate employees. But only about 30 percent of those who appeal their manager’s criticisms prevail, meaning they can keep their jobs or seek new ones within the company with different bosses, according to people familiar with the matter. Eighteen months after its debut, the hearing process has created resentment and raised questions about fairness, according to current and former workers as well as attorneys familiar with their situations. “It’s a kangaroo court,” says George Tamblyn, a Seattle employment lawyer who helped one former Amazon worker plan her appeal earlier this year. “My impression of the process is it’s totally unfair.”)

Who reads their articles? Who reads their emails?)
http://www.dailyherald.com/business/20180630/inside-facebook-and-twitters-secret-meetings-with-trump-aides-and-conservative-leaders
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Twitter and Facebook are scrambling to assuage conservative leaders who have sounded alarms — and sought to rile voters — with accusations that the country’s tech giants are censoring right-leaning posts, tweets and news. From secret dinners with conservative media elite to private meetings with the Republican National Committee, the new outreach reflects tech giants’ delicate task: satisfying a party in power while defending online platforms against attacks that threaten to undermine the public’s trust in the web. . . . To address the allegations, Dorsey has tried to break bread — quite literally — with his company’s critics. The Twitter executive convened a rare private dinner with Republican leaders and conservative commentators in Washington last week at Cafe Milano, a familiar Georgetown haunt for city power brokers, according to four people who participated in the dinner but requested anonymity because it was off the record. The gathering came weeks after Dorsey invoked conservatives’ ire by tweeting a story suggesting voters should elect Democrats in November — and after he made his first official visit to Congress. Among those attending the June 19 dinner were Mercedes Schlapp, a top communications adviser for Trump; Grover Norquist, the leader of Americans for Tax Reform; Greta Van Susteren, a right-leaning host on MSNBC; and Guy Benson, a Fox News commentator, according to the people in the room. Dorsey hoped to use the dinner as a way to build “trust” among conservatives who have long chastised the company, three of the people said. He defended Twitter against accusations that it targeted right-leaning users unfairly but still admitted that the company has room for improvement, according to the attendees. In response, the Twitter executive heard an earful from conservatives gathered at the table, who scoffed at the fact that Dorsey runs a platform that’s supposed to be neutral even though he’s tweeted about issues like immigration, gay rights and national politics. They also told Dorsey that the tech industry’s efforts to improve diversity — after years of criticism for maintaining a largely white, male workforce — should focus on hiring engineers with more diverse political viewpoints as well, according to those who dined with him in Washington. A spokesman for Twitter declined to comment on the dinner.)

CONSERVATIVE REVIEW
— Do border states have the power to repel illegal entry? – Daniel Horowitz (DIERSEN: Constructively, Mexico and its allies have declared war on America a) by their sending many millions of their citizens into America illegally, b) by their keeping many millions of their citizens in America illegally, and c) by their sending many mountains of illegal drugs into America illegally. By their words and by their actions, each and every one of my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have made it clear that they side with Mexico and its allies against America.)
https://www.conservativereview.com/news/do-border-states-have-the-power-to-repel-illegal-entry/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: During an era of ever-evolving and newly discovered rights, we forget that sovereignty, both federal and state, is an absolute right that is being ignored in the immigration debate. We have the right, both as residents of states, particularly at the border, and as citizens of this federal republic, to be governed by our consent and to admit people to this country only through the consent of our laws. We’ve already explained that it is a founding principle that a president has the power and the responsibility to repel a large-scale incursion into our country. A state has a similar responsibility when it is experiencing an invasion and the federal government refuses to act. The entire purpose of a federal government What if our own federal government is impotent in protecting our border states from violent drug cartels and the crime, social ills, and public cost drain of mass migration from across the border, while the federal courts are downright preventing the states from protecting themselves? The Constitution is clear as to the responsibilities of the federal government and why we have one in the first place. The federal government exists not to impose more regulations on the people, but to protect their rights and security where states are inherently incapable of doing so effectively — namely, in repelling an invasion. Ironically, it is the one act of war a president can pursue without the consent of Congress, yet the invasion at our border is the only one we refuse to address. Article IV, §4 of the Constitution tasks the federal government with guaranteeing states’ protection against invasion. That is because, in the words of Madison (Federalist #45), the “few and defined” powers of the federal government were to be applied “principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and foreign commerce.” State governments, on the other hand, deal with “the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State.” This is war But what if an outside force buttressed by the most dangerous paramilitary organizations in the world invades a border state and disrupts its internal order, improvement, and prosperity – and the federal government doesn’t stop it? Well, the Constitution is not a suicide pact. Article I, § 10, cl. 3 (the Compact Clause) states: “No State shall, without the Consent of Congress, lay any Duty of Tonnage, keep Troops, or Ships of War in time of Peace, enter into any Agreement or Compact with another State, or with a foreign Power, or engage in War, unless actually invaded, or in such imminent Danger as will not admit of delay.” The Constitution is clear that, all things equal, states shouldn’t engage in warfare with other countries. But all things are not equal in this case, and the Constitution made an exception for those times when states are invaded and in imminent danger. Well, is this really an invasion or imminent danger, you might ask? Andy McCarthy wrote an incisive column yesterday reminding us that we are looking at the immigration issue through the wrong lens. We view it as a legal problem, when in essence it’s a national security problem. Just consider the crime statistics in Texas alone since 2011: According to the DHS and the Texas Department of Public Safety, over 251,000 criminal aliens have been booked into local Texas jails between June 1, 2011, and April 30, 2018. They have been charged for a total of 663,000 offenses, including: . . . And those numbers only include those illegals verified by federal authorities through fingerprints. Roughly 50 percent, and often the most dangerous ones, are never interdicted by federal authorities before they commit murder and mayhem in Texas. Where is this coming from? It’s not a natural disaster. It’s coming from a concerted and organized massed migration completely orchestrated by the drug cartels, often with the help of the Mexican government. Click through to my tweetstorm quoting the Texas DPS explaining the results of the first Central American migration in 2014-2015: . . . As these quotes show, this is not some sort of legal problem with immigration loopholes, but our biggest current threat to our national security and homeland. These are often former Mexican military, in the case of the Zetas cartel, who now hold territory on Texas soil and use military tactics to divert the border patrol with bogus asylum seekers and bring in drugs, crime, and gangs. If this is not an invasion or an imminent danger, I’m not sure what is. I don’t think our Founders could have imagined such a colossal human and monetary toll from massive migration. Even without the military and drug cartel side of this, just the sheer wave of impoverished and often troubled migrants, of which over 90 percent turn out to be invalid asylum claims, should be enough to constitute an invasion. As Andy McCarthy rightfully observes, “If you look at federal asylum law, it addresses the individual migrant, not a systemic incursion. … It does not address what could happen if thousands of migrants simultaneously seek asylum.” States retain their sovereignty over violent incursions Amazingly, the political class questions even the president’s ability to repel the invasion without lawfare, but in reality, even a state, particularly Texas, should be able to do so. I’m not suggesting that the governor direct the Texas Air National Guard to drop bombs on the cartels, but the state would be well within its rights to start returning some of the migrants across the border. Joseph Story in his commentary on the Compact Clause writes that while the prohibition on states making war is obviously necessary, it was “wisely guarded by exceptions sufficient for the safety of the states, and not justly open to the objection of being dangerous to the Union.” Still, a state may be so situated, that it may become indispensable to possess military forces, to resist an expected invasion, or insurrection. The danger may be too imminent for delay; and under such circumstances, a state will have a right to raise troops for its own safety, even without the consent of Congress. Haven’t the border states (the ones that still care) waited long enough with too much delay? Some might suggest that this is not a declared war. But if you look at the original language of Article IV’s guarantee clause protecting states from invasion, Madison originally drafted its language to be read as protecting against “foreign violence.” It’s clear that this was not necessarily referring to formal warfare with a nation-state, but repelling violent incursions from Indian tribes. When the drug cartels use families and children to distract from the core of the invasion, the cartels are no different from Hamas using human shields at the Gaza-Israel border. Israel rightfully treats this as a military issue, and our government should too. If it fails to do so, the drug cartels should be on the receiving end of what happens when you mess with Texas. As Scalia asked: “Are the sovereign States at the mercy of the Federal Executive’s refusal to enforce the Nation’s immigration laws? A good way of answering that question is to ask: Would the States conceivably have entered into the Union if the Constitution itself contained the Court’s holding?”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “First, it’s morally wrong and I think it’s really harmful to the party. The guy’s a complete nutcase. He’s a Nazi,” said conservative GOP state Rep. David McSweeney. “This is an absolute political disaster.” . . . In the meantime, Republicans have one last chance to save face. They can mount a write-in challenge if that candidate notifies three counties in the district of their intent by Sept. 6. “They didn’t run anyone against him in the primary. They didn’t file an objection to him, they didn’t find a write-in candidate and they didn’t run an independent candidate,” McSweeney said. “We’ve missed four opportunities. We better not miss the fifth.”)

HARVARD BUSINESS WEEK
— APRIL 9, 2018 FLASHBACK: The Dark Side of Performance Bonuses – Sean Silverthorne (DIERSEN: While I worked for GAO 1980-1997, its top priority was getting rid of its employees who were Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran who had not made GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40. Consequently, GAO gave performance bonuses to its employees who were Democrat, minority, female, and/or veteran who made the aforesaid promotions.)
https://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/the-dark-side-of-performance-bonuses
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Companies continually test ways to incent employees to perform more effectively, often turning to worker-motivation tools such as bonuses, “up or out” employee ranking tournaments, and employee of the month rewards. Behavioral scientists warn that these programs, if not constructed carefully, can open a box full of unintended consequences that ultimately harm rather than help the organization. The financial crisis of 2008 was partially fueled by origination bonuses paid to bank loan officers who were incented to approve bad loans. Less well understood, but uncovered in HBS research several years ago, is that those bank bonuses also caused loan officers to perceive reality differently—they believed those loans would succeed. It’s not just financial incentives that are under study. Employers seek to change the behavior of workers in all manner of ways: to make more ethical decisions, to get flu shots, to lose weight, to be wiser about personal financial planning. Behavioral scientists are becoming the new HR superstars in some organizations. Research through the years at Harvard Business School has explored this good intentions-bad outcomes dilemma in many settings, from the glitzy world of Las Vegas to steamy laundry plants in Asia. The results these studies have uncovered are important to understand for org designers, compensation committees, and any function such as sales that depends on incentives to drive performance. Here is a sample of research from HBS into the dark side of employee motivation programs:)

— June 29th – Drive Your Corvette to Work Day (DIERSEN: Of course, I have never driven my 1972 Corvette to work. My Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates always used my owning a Corvette against me. On the last Friday in June, a) I worked for IRS in its Harvey office in 1972, in its 63rd & Halsted office in Chicago in 1973, in its Joliet office in 1974, and in its Loop office in Chicago 1975-1979 and b) I worked for GAO in its Loop office in Chicago 1980-1997. I stored the car in my mother’s garage in Crete 1971-1984 and then at 915 Cove Court in Wheaton since 1984. It has only 5,081 miles on it. I have not started it since November 4, 2009. I plan on getting it back up and running for its 50th model year anniversary in 2022. My owning a Corvette since 1971 is a direct result of my 1969 Dodge Charge SE being stolen while I worked for IRS in its Loop office in 1971.)

CHAMPAIGN/URBANA NEWS GAZETTE
— Sam’s a sham – Editorial
http://www.news-gazette.com/opinion/editorials/2018-06-27/editorial-sams-sham.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The only people happier that McCann to see him enter the contest between Republican incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrat J.B. Pritzker are Democrats who hope that McCann, a nominal Republican, will draw enough votes from Rauner to give Pritzker the win. The Democratic Governors Association issued a statement gloatingly predicting that McCann’s candidacy will draw hard-line conservatives from the GOP, further complicating Rauner’s efforts to unify the party behind him. “Just when he needs to turn to the general election, Bruce Rauner will have to keep refighting the battles of the primary,” said DGA Illinois communications director Sam Salustro. McCann, who is running as a representative of a new Conservative Party, indicated that he’s running as a proponent of gun rights and lower taxes. To hear him talk, he’s a proud conservative ideologue. But that’s just rhetoric. McCann is running — and he knows he’s running — to ensure the defeat of Rauner, with whom he has publicly crossed swords, and the election of Pritzker. . .Second, Rauner has alienated conservatives, particularly with his decision to sign legislation providing taxpayer-funded abortions. He barely won the primary against little-known state Rep. Jeanne Ives, who challenged Rauner from the right. Whether Rauner can get those conservatives back remains undetermined. He keeps reminding them that he’s all that stands between them and complete Democratic control of the state. But ideologues of both the right and left can’t bear any candidate who, in their view, double-crosses them on even a single issue. In that sense, McCann’s candidacy is a direct consequence of Gov. Rauner’s own actions, a hurdle that he unintentionally created and one that will be difficult to overcome.)

DECATUR DAILY
— Creating a compassionate and workable immigration policy – Franklin Johnson, Falkville (DIERSEN: All my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes want cheap labor.)

(FROM THE LETTER: I don’t know how you can do it. You continue to frame the immigration crisis as a struggle between persecuted families yearning for a better life opposed by hard-hearted white nativists determined to maintain racial purity. Right before your eyes, elements of both political parties are trying to impose slavery — not legal slavery, but economic and political slavery on a whole class of people. They talk humanity, but their purpose is profit and control: 1. Cheap labor from people who won’t or can’t complain; 2. A servant class who can be manipulated because of their lack of education and their dependence. You deny that you are in favor of open borders, yet you oppose any workable effort to stanch the flow: a wall, zero tolerance, moratoriums, and most of all, deportation for those who broke the law getting here as a deterrent. Your idea of immigration reform is amnesty for all who will take a token pledge. You appear not to be concerned about what happens to children who arrive here unescorted. They vanish from their foster homes, and you don’t consider what hells are being imposed on them as they’re scattered through the country. You refuse to say how many new immigrants is enough and you oppose setting standards for those we accept. You quote Emma Lazarus, but you don’t recognize that immigration was once a controlled process. You try to shame us for opposing this travesty while ignoring the results on the Americans impacted. Speak up. Line it out. What is your idea of a compassionate and workable immigration policy without the platitudes, histrionics, and tear-jerking?)

— Measure Introduced To Censure Maxine Waters, Ask Her To Resign – JAZZ SHAW (DIERSEN: QUESTION: Who unsuccessfully attempted to get the Illinois Center Right Coalition (ICRC) to censure me at its 2006 Annual Convention and succeeded in throwing me off the ICRC Steering Committee at its 2007 Annual Convention? ANSWER: Bill Brady supporters. QUESTION: What did those Bill Brady supporters use to justify their actions? ANSWER: I included a link in a GOPUSA ILLINOIS email to an article by Tom Roeser in the Chicago Sun-Times that called for Bill Brady to withdraw so that the conservative vote would not be split and Jim Oberweis could defeat Judy Baar Topinka in the 2006 Illinois Republican gubernatorial primary. Topinka got 38% of the vote in that primary, Oberweis got 32%, and Brady got 18%. Brady supporters have always a) painted me as being an operative or a dupe for Oberweis and b) blamed me for Brady’s past, present, and future problems.)
